My favourite thing about the farting butt jokes (apart from an old fashioned juvenile laugh) is that in Tom’s vlogs leading up to that asdfmovie he repeatedly mentioned that the concept was silly and people would probably hate the jokes, and once the episode released the response was immediately overwhelmingly negative. He knew no one would like it, he very quickly regretted it, but the idea made him laugh once and he decided “fuck it” and put it in. Truly the farting butt is the ultimate symbol of artistic integrity.

I did like the effectively Committee built sketch, but each sketch loses something when watched in isolation. ADSF Movie works so well as it just keeps you riding the funny train all the way to the station

@@caps_lock decomposition doesnt always need oxygen. There is fermentation for example. There are also plenty anaerobic micro organisms that dont need oxygen reproduce or feed themselves. A lot of bacteria in our body dont fare well with an abundance of oxygen and would be more likely to cause damage when the aerobic micro-organisms would die.

@@caps_lock I dont know much about the human microflora, but while they could survive at -130C for a long time, some thermophilic bacteria actually thrive between 40 and 122 C now, the sun would probably destroy most of our body well before that happens though. The vacuum would indeed be an issue in the long run huh. I guess ill keep it at the body slowly disintegrating from high levels of radiation

Pie flavour was a standing joke in my school. "Die potato!" "Not today!" Was probably among the best in my opinion but it needed the context of the potato having died a couple of times already. Oh, and Desmond the moon bear of course.
I remember quoting the series a ton when I was little, I think I even got in light trouble once for quoting the one about brain cancer
I somehow acquired the phrase "die potato" from my friends before ever seeing the clip, and still to this day will use it whenever killing bugs or the like.

When I was in middle school my family didn't have Internet so I thought the (seemingly) random shit my friends often said was stuff they made up. Then I saw these sketches for the first time on my TikTok feed about a week ago and realized that all the "random" shit they were saying back then was actually mostly asdfmovie references. "Desmond the Moon Bear" is what unlocked that memory for me, since that was the most popular sketch at my school.
That revelation about Desmond and the Moon girl was a better plot twist than most stories can pull off today

I would definitely argue that what makes an asdf joke "good" is honestly how well it works itself in culturally. I think that both neatly explains why newer jokes didn't perform as well, but it also reflects the general lexicalisation of the popular jokes. A common element of them is that they're simple, short-hand phrases that work well when directly quoting or referencing the series as an in-joke with other people who've seen it, and i think that very strongly reflects the overall cultural place that asdfmovie has.

came back and re-watching this I can say that most of the reasons I think the top ten were so popular was because these were some of the most memorable jokes/lines like the terminators line "I'll be back" and even in comic form u can hear the voices if you have watched asdf movies before

Throughout his entire explanation of the different types of subversion of expectations, I kept wondering whether or not he was showing clips that gave examples, or he would allow the clip to play and then explain it. And I think that's a testament to what works about ASDF movies. It's a blend of several different subversions. Not just relying on one

My favourite sketch is probably the “You know who’s gay? Us.” It is unexpected in a certain way, has reoccurring characters and brings joy.
Though I have to say the perfect joke was also very good indeed.
