    If you want to check out the book I'm reading, by Steven Pinker, I highly recommend it: amzn.to/2CZUJSs
    Also: don't have the idea in your mind that I'm a robot because I plan some days carefully. I explained this in a reply to another comment, but essentially the goal of planning like this is to reduce the background noise in my mind. If I'm able to make a plan that allows me to do everything that I need to do, then I can find time to do things like get coffee with friends and not have to worry about the fact that I'm "wasting time"... because I have a plan that I know will let me achieve what I want to achieve. This allows me to be more in the present and reduces stress for me.
    I also don't plan every day like this. I didn't plan anything formally today, like most Saturdays, I just went where the day took me and chilled out. Rest is super important.
    tl;dr: I plan meticulously so that when I'm on, I'm on, and when I'm off, I'm off.

      Thank you for your vlog. It was amazing! As a Student myself (and also someone who shares your mindset on planning) I find this refreshing. Sometimes we literally need to see someone else doing what we want to do to get back on track. Now I'm (hopefully) off to study! haha. Take care and keep the good work! :D

      I am so sorry, but I feel as If I should point this out for the 99% of us out there. This is NOT an accurate representation of how you should be as a college kid. This is an EXTREME case of a go-getter. Most college kids roll out of their bed at 10:30am just in time to make their 11am lecture. Most do not plan their day in a notebook by the hour and what time they will go to the bed. Harvard is filled with 1 percenter kids. It's an extremely toxic atmosphere from the testimonials I've heard and watched. There is TED talk out there and its a Harvard kid which dives deep into the ridiculous Harvard atmosphere.

Can't really rank "Harvard" parties super high as compared to BU, northeastern, or really any B school. You can find better parties at UMass Amherst.

    I'm a grad student across the river at BU (hello, neighbor!), but I still watch your videos for organizational tips haha.
    I read some comments suggesting that being so scheduled makes one's life too predictable/boring. I find it just the opposite. When I am properly scheduled, my life opens up. I can actually do MORE fun things because my core priorities are already taken care of. When it's noon and I've already done my workout, class work, and house chores, I can say yes to dinner out that night, or stay in and binge Netflix without worrying about still needing to do this or that. It's worth it to be so organized like yourself. You're obviously going to be (and already are) very successful in life because of it!

    John, the fact that you have such a structured life, doesn't ever affect your mental stability negatively? I'm genuinely curious. Doesn't this lack of spontaneity kind of cause suffocation? Like knowing everything in advance 24/7. I'm not talking about extreme procrastination and to be honest it's awesome that it doesn't affect you but I don't know, while I have some more vague schedule, structuring to such a detail simply makes me anxious. Doesn't this whole rush to get everything (because we're talking about a lot of things) in time, make you unable to relax in a therapeutic way (if that makes sense)?

    • @vorname4950
      @vorname4950 6 років тому +135

      Every one is different - what might not be ideal for you, is for John. I know that if I f.ex. doesn't have a detailed plan in mind/on paper about my day, I get this really uncomfortable feeling. It got nothing to do with "being a robot" (@Anand Arora), since I doubt that we (John/me) actually do more than you during the day. The only difference is, that we don't like feeling lost in space and time, and that we're more productive if we know exactly what's to do. Also, one can be spontaneous even with structurated day. Having this "plan" in the morning doesn't mean that you can't change it during the day, and, as @Paraquito stated, the plans are vague enough to leave open space and spontaneous ideas.

      The way I learned this system that it look like he’s doing is from Cal Newport, and in that book when he talks about this section, he actually says that your day will never perfectly be what you plan, and any changes should be welcomed. The main point of the scheduling is so that like you don’t have any point in the day where you DONT know what you should be doing

    Hey, John, I'm a recent subscriber and I'm loving it here! Anyways, I'm a Computer Science student, sophomore as well, although in Serbia.
    I was wondering, why don't you give us at least a bit of insight in what you're actually studying and working on, rather that where are you going all day? I am really curious about what do CS students in the US study, compared to Serbia.
    Have a good one!

      I am so sorry, but I feel as If I should point this out for the 99% of us out there. This is NOT an accurate representation of how you should be as a college kid. This is an EXTREME case of a go getter. Most college kids roll out of best at 10:30am just in time to make their 11am lecture. Most do not plan their day in a notebook by the hour and what time they will go the bed. Harvard is filled with 1 percenter kids. It's an extremely toxic atmosphere from the testimonials I've heard and watched. There is TED talk out there and its a Harvard kid which dives deep into the ridiculous Harvard atmosphere.

      @@HistoriaSuccess I'm smart. I'm just to lazy to put the effort to display it 100% of the time. I don't like using a planner because I find it ridiculous to give yourself a set timeframe to complete a task. Sometimes you have those days where you didn't put in enough effort into a task and a planner just Cascades this negativity into all the following tasks. Handle things one at a time

After watching your videos, I have been inspired to plan out my day, set goals, and reward myself when I achieve them. As well as making lists, tips and tricks for studying, and to stay in the right mind set. I look forward to more videos from you!
