Niet Ali-A, Niet Ali-b maar Ali-c Hey, thanks for the heads up, these were just time stamps for people who might not have wanted to watch the complete video, and just wanted to get the gist of each of what John learned,I got the first one, but I noted the lesson down as he wrote it, not how he explained it.
OzzTonWentToSpace the terminology and meaning of school, high school and college of us and India are different. Can anyone please clarify if by school he meant grade 11 , 12 or college years at Harvard.
Guys, number 5 is KEY. You gotta surround yourself with success minded people. I am 32. Even though I knew this before, I didn’t take it to heart. Seriously, stop tolerating toxic and negative people, and make it a priority to connect with people who aspire to become the best version of themselves. If I could give some advice to my younger self, this would be it. John, great video. You got a lot of talent. Keep uploading and helping. You got a great purpose my friend. 🤟
Thanks for that! See I'm 16 in grade 11 in high school and its kinda hard to do that because I know many people, but ill definitely try and surround myself with more exceptional and inspirational people!
YES ABSOLUTELY. i have a staple group of 9 friends in which everyone helps each other to reach our dreams and be happy during the process. we're now college freshmen, and in a few weeks, all of us will be entering our new lives at our dream universities (which are members of like the ivy league in my country). and ofc, i'm very thankful for having found john fish.
Absolutely true. I'm 31 and I've spent most of my adult life working as a freelance graphic + web designer. I was so happy to just work from home on my own and interact with people as little as possible. In the past 2 years I've started making an effort to be among other positive business people and I've grown more than I ever thought possible. I now have very nice offices and 2 employees, and I plan on hiring another person before the end of the year. My whole life changed when I started surrounding myself with the right people.
Start hanging out with people who have your goal in mind. Notice how the kids who get straight As are all friends with each other...That's not a coincidence.
My problem is meeting these people. The only people I know that are self driven and inspirational are the people I work with and my wife. I'm in my early 20s and everyone at work is way order than I am so it's hard to establish a friendship outside of work. How do I meet people with the same goals in life as me? I'm a CAD Draftsmen or as they like to call us at work (engineer). Thanks.

This was actually really validating. Hearing a Harvard student feel the same way I do about balancing school and other things affirms my feelings about the value of school and how it fits into my time.
Found your channel when I was at an all-time low. I had just finished my freshman year at college with a 4.0 but felt deeply unsatisfied. I was pushing myself disproportionately hard when it came to school work and did not feel I was growing as a person. Your videos helped put things into perspective. Made me remember what I wanted most out of my uni experience - to learn. Ready to walk into Sophomore Year with a growth mindset. Thanks a lot :)
You are my most favourite youtuber. If I could give you one tip that would be to live your eyes some rest because you r not blinking. Also my cousin looks like you.
i definitely wish i learned that school doesn't matter that much when i was younger!! the 80/20 rule is a really smart thing to take away! spend more time doing the things that enrich you outside of the classroom and you'll be much happier and grow exponentially more as a person. wish I had your videos when I was in college, but lucky for all these younger people who can take in your advice. thanks for sharing, John!
If you get a chance to take a class in sociology or social work, please please do! I was a business major and the classes I felt were the most important to me were in those departments - one was on adolescent gang intervention in LA and another on gender studies. These classes helped me to understand how the privileges that we hold are systematic, not just based on luck, and I think it's so important that everyone learn this! I've gained so much perspective and it's changed the way I move through life and understand the world.
Your "school doesn't matter" advice is helping me a lot. I mean, I've realized that you are right. I've been caring so much about school for last year, but in the end I'm not improving as much as I am tryharding... The differece between my last year grades and this year doesn't represent the extra effort that I'm doing. And I think this is because I was happier last year because I did my hobbies much more often than this one. Thank you Jhon :) PD: Sorry for my awful english, I'm from Spain, and the english curses here are as awful as my english :D
I'm about to finish freshman year in a completely different country, and, obviously, at a completely different university, but it turns out the things that I figured out after the first year were extremely similar. Maybe it's something people in this age generally have to deal with. And that's why your videos are great. A lot of them are connected to your experience at Harvard, but the genuineness of it and breadth of your views must resonate with a much larger audience, as I see it.
You should try meditating. It’ll help a whole and as well give you a new perspective on life. Not to long ago I wasn’t the happiest, but through following your method and meditating, it’s helped a whole lot. I’m working on an upcoming brand and watching your videos and following your ways has truly helped me a lot.
Seriously, you're amazing!as a person,as a Harvard student,or as a youtuber, because you can balance everything, you're optimist, and most importantly, you change people's mind, you spread possitive messages, and teach people that things aren't how they seemed to be,that they are different ways to see the same thing, and you really motivate me so much, thank you!
John, thank you so much for your videos! I had this dream to study in a big university, which seems not to be possible, but it doesn't bother me anymore. I've learned, with you, that the most important thing is to be the better person and the better researcher I can be, and that this is what makes strong those studying in Havard or in other great places. I am really excited to work improving myself! Thank you so much!
Wow... your passion for knowledge is really admirable. It's as if listening to you share about what you're doing rn makes me want to also pursue the things that make me happy w/out restriction.. But that's just a personal issue of mine rn. This just shows how much love you've been putting to yourself in life, as well as the dedication in your priorities.
I'm learning a lot from you, even though I'm older. Not just how you prioritize or get the maximum out of your time, but the process by which how you do things and realize things. You're a smart man and your heart's in the right place on top of that.
Your rule number five is spot on. I have been to multiple universities and experienced others through children. My father always said that the difference between the elite school and the state school was that the state school had elite people but also a lot of regular, hard working kids too. It’s who you surround yourself with, how much you engage with professors and how much effort you put into it. It also depends on the area of study. Some very specific degrees are well done on universities that you don’t expect. Each school has a niche. I’ve definitely learned that admissions and happiness and then ultimate success at a school has a lot to do with the student fitting the school but also the school fitting the student. Sometimes people are so focused on the prestige of a place that they overlook the fit. Well done UA-cams! Keep it up, you are doing a terrific job.
Can I just say I LOVE your videos! Especially because I just finished my freshmen year of college at UNC and can closely relate to a lot your content. I loved my freshmen year but I know I could do better. So thank you for being an inspiration. I understand you are not perfect, but your efforts to be the best version of yourself are definitely inspiring others, like myself. Keep up the good work.
hey man, I'm from Brazil and I'm prety sure that I've seen all of your videos. Tbh you were the main youtuber that got me started on the strive for growth, self-development, reading, setting goals and time managemment, which has kind of been changing my life, so thank you!
Youre not just bringing good in people. Yours are beyond greatness. You put so much work and effort just to showcase how to deal and atleast live well with lyf. These contents that you make deserve a clap. Keep inspiring us!😊
URHO TM lol all student youtubers always say their college/university in some part of their videos while some in the thumbnail and others in the description. i think they’re doing that to gain views from the people outside their enviroment
You would think as the stereotypical Harvard student is cocky and smart and just a know it all. Based on that is what I based my opinion of him. That’s all ✌️
You're a very inspiring person. I find it kind of odd how mature you look given your age but it makes me look forward to read more, grow more, make more of an effort to get the life I want because I see how much you've accomplished with small daily actions.
This is the first video of yours that I have ever watched, and I can tell that you are a really kindhearted, genuine person and I'm going to be watching many more of your videos soon. Thank you
I have my undergrad in nursing but I'm an Extension student taking prerequisite courses for medical school. My jaw dropped when you said you were taking Swedish! I've been studying Swedish for about 18 months now with a tutor on Skype a few times a week. Even though I love Swedish, I've been struggling with how much time to devote to it since it's not one of my "serious" classes (or even a class at all really). This helped to give some perspective on that. Jag köpte en gamecube från Sverige och ett Harry Potter spel på svenska. De har varit så roliga och de har hjälpt mig att lära mig mer svenska. Vi ses!
Wow this channel has grown so much! I remember I was subscribed at 20,000 and now you’re at a quarter million! Keep up the great work John, your channel is inspiring the youth to become great people!
Hey dude , I live in the Netherlands and I really want to thank you. You have helped me planning my homework and gave me new perspectives on what’s behind things going on.🙏👍keep going on.
you're one of my favourite youtubers ever - your videos are so helpful and enjoyable and your 5th tip is so so true! I changed the people who I surround myself with this year and it literally changed my life
I'll definitely take your advice on those 5 lessons. Thank you for just being who you are, a very bright student, a very honest and genuine person who is open minded and willing to help others. Given your busy schedule I doubt you'll see this but thank you for investing your time to make videos like this. Keep doing what your doing.
The value and priority comparison is really inspiring. I went to my current high school because the vibe here is what I like. I still hold that opinion! Without them, my high school experiences won't be so great. Yeah, agree with the "average of the 5 people who are closest to you" theory.
HOLY MOLY did this feel just REALLY relatable, especially #3. Problem is, I got such a kick out of helping others that I was losing my drive to do well in school. John, how did you overcome this problem? How many hours did you spend in school vs. helping others? And how long should it take to improve my habits and just work more time efficiently? Also, on your last "lesson," I would agree with the point, but as a community college student who's looking to transfer to a 4-year uni., I would say there's a big difference in the sense that I have to make more of an effort to find those "exceptional and inspirational" people. Luckily, the energy boost I get from meeting these kinds of people vs. meeting someone who likes the same memes I do is VERY different and noticeable.
keep inspiring bro. Im currently in my first year of university of computer science too here in italy and im struggling a lot. But since i start to watch your video i start to be more organized and i start breaking more bad habit. Once again keep inspiring bro.
So nice to see someone who cares about self and social growth, not just the accolades going to such a prestigious school will give you! Can't wait to grow together man. :)
I remember taking anthropological theories relating to supernatural beliefs and practices as an elective and it was so much fun! It was the only class I can remember throughout my time in college when I wasn't bored or procrastinated on studying or doing homework lol.
thank you for everything you do. you inspire me! i just went out and bought an hourly planner and I've been so productive. love the idea of the list with 5 values versus what you spend your time on! thanks a lot :)
Awesome purpose! Interesting argument that the community has a huge impact on your growth - and that applies even to places such as Harvard that people have mostly an external and uninvolved opinion about.
Great video john! I've been watching them for quite some time and I found your videos when I searched for a day in the life of college students and your computer science one came up and I've been hooked ever since. I have recently decided to create my own videos to help inspire people as you have done for me (along with other UA-camr's like Casey Neistat) and I'm doing it to help grow as a person and to share my experiences in college as I have just started this summer and I want people able to search for a day in the life of a computer engineer and actually find a video rather than just have videos over software engineering, electrical engineering, or computer science, because I feel like computer engineering is overlooked so I want to be able to help mend that gap in UA-cam and it is primarily because of you, so thank you and keep up the great work on the videos John!
I thoroughly appreciate your videos and the drive you have (and share) to be the best version of yourself, you can possibly be. Thank you for doing what you do!
I really like the way you keep track of your self growth and self awareness .. I totally agree with your last lesson:to cut our negative ppl !! Thanks for sharing your five lesson...
Don't worry. As soon as your CS classes ramp up you will see! Love your videos have fun in school next year! I live in Harvard Square and would love to grab a tea
Indeed, your video is already making good impact of me. I can learn from you of studying in different university ,different country and most important-your prospect!! And it’s also the people motivating me to study in medicine.
I'm currently just like this, taking weird classes as an computer science student. I'm taking gelogy and it had opened my mind to other finer things in life. I felt so relatable but of crouse, John is on a whole different level in terms of academic standard and other factors. I want to be happy like this but I suck as math lol.
It's encouraging to see how much you've developed, and at least for me, has motivated me to push further. Keep learning, keep trying, John. I look forward to your next video. Have you listened to Jordan Peterson? I've found that his input and research into psychology and meaning in life immensely valuable.

Hi John, your videos are incredibly inspiring. Just discovered your channel from my recommendations feed and I'm hooked.
keep inspiring bro.
After every video I watch I keep getting more and more hooked. They are amazing.
Wishing everyone the GREATEST day ever💜
You should make a podcast 😭 You’re so humble and you give such enriching and realistic advice..
Thanks for sharing this with us , that was helpful
I remember taking anthropological theories relating to supernatural beliefs and practices as an elective and it was so much fun! It was the only class I can remember throughout my time in college when I wasn't bored or procrastinated on studying or doing homework lol.
pheromonekid yeah anthropology is awesome! Studying it now, it's such a joy ❤️
Love what you are doing man, sharing your journey is helping so many people our age
'It's all about the people', I can relate to this so much! Great video John.
You’re videos are so insightful. I’ve learned a lot from what you’ve done.
These videos have benefited myself and others so much so you have definitely been doing heaps towards your helping others goal!
thank you for everything you do. you inspire me! i just went out and bought an hourly planner and I've been so productive. love the idea of the list with 5 values versus what you spend your time on! thanks a lot :)
What a great lesson you have just told me: Harvard isn’t great, but its people are. ✨ Really appreciate your sharing.
Wow Jonh! Your feedback is a gift. I would say, thank you to share with us this valuable words.
Awesome purpose! Interesting argument that the community has a huge impact on your growth - and that applies even to places such as Harvard that people have mostly an external and uninvolved opinion about.
Looking forward to seeing your updated reading list. It’s inspired me to try to keep up!
I think you’ve helped me so so much in school after ur videos n I’m so grateful that ur channel exist!!❤️
Thank you so very much for sharing the books that you read. Especially the inspirational talks you give to us viewers.
i also just finished my freshman year of college and i totally relate to all of these lessons!! thank you for creating great content as always :-)
You've been helping me buddy, in more ways that I can explain. Keep being you man!
You are the best John , I have followed you on UA-cam for more than a month and you have changed my life

what a cool background!!! and I loved how it changed throughout the video :)
I am reading a book a week because of you, and I love it!!
Great videos, just finished freshman year and can totally relate.
You are really one of a kind person, so inspiring and unique
It's encouraging to see how much you've developed, and at least for me, has motivated me to push further. Keep learning, keep trying, John. I look forward to your next video. Have you listened to Jordan Peterson? I've found that his input and research into psychology and meaning in life immensely valuable.
love your videos! They are quite inspiring and makes me really excited for college (I am a rising freshman)!
I am from Kazakhstan, your tips is so true. Especially, 5th
