    The first step for any bathroom floor is to assess the subfloor, e.g. plywood or concrete.
    In this example we had a wood subfloor and joists were 16" on-center.
    Strata Mat was used over the wood subfloor as the uncoupling membrane. That was waterproofed with Hydro Barrier.
    Our prior video tutorials share how to install and waterproof Strata Mat
    • How to Build a Curbles...
    Laticrete 4XLT thin-set mortar was used to bond Strata Mat to the wood subfloor and over top the mat, too.
    The biggest challenge with tiling bathroom floors outside curbless showers is ensuring tiles are square with the shower pan entry.
    Our video shares several tips for tiling bathroom floors and is helpful even if you're not building a curbless shower

    I like the wet sponge technique. Always something you can learn from others

    Great video! I'm in the process of doing this to my bathroom and these tutorials are a great help. I was wondering what if you use the same tile int he shower as on the floor? Do you still need to create that line separating the shower floor from the bathroom floor?

    All that waterproof.. just to send it down the vent if it ever floods.
    As always.. nice work.

      I was thinking the same thing. Silicone around the vent?

      Am sure they used an angle vent & sealed it to the floor

    What is the total grout thickness using your methodology, that I should plan for in my calculations?

    love the videos. I'm doing a curbless shower and want the bathroom floor tile to extend into the shower.all one seamless floor.. What considerations should I be aware of?

    Do you recommend always pre-cutting your tiles and laying them out then gluing them down later? Because I always want to make sure that my threshold area will look even and square because that is the most noticeable place that people will look.

    Is the floor completely level or is there a slope to the drain?

    Hi guys, great videos that are helping me with my first tile work. I have a few questions re the thickness of the thin-set. I'm tiling a bathroom floor and the entrance from the other room transitions from hardwood to the new tile. The hardwood leading into the bathroom is 3/4" thick. The depth from the top edge of the hardwood to the top edge of the subfloor in the bathroom is 3/4", with an extra 1/8" more depth at one point in the transition (center). I want the tile and hardwood to transition smoothly with a level surface. My porcelain (12' x 24") tile is 5/16" thick. Question: Will a 1/2" notched trowel leave me with 1/2" of thin-set beneath the tile? Assuming I will be notching the thin-set on the subfloor and back buttering the tiles. Question 2: Should I be back buttering the tiles with the notched part of the trowel or the smooth edge of the trowel? Any advice would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

      Great questions. The other variable should be your uncoupling membrane, eg Ditra or Ditra XL. Ditra XL is 5/16” and requires modified thin-set underneath it which might add another 1/8” at most. Back buttering the tile with the flat side of your trowel and using a 1/2” square notch trowel should get your tile flush with the 3/4” hardwood. Here’s a great tip by Schluter discussing your exact situation

    Awesome video as always! Question, my customer wants to transition from the tile in a (yet to be built) curbless shower to LVP that will cover the bathroom floor ... any suggestions on this transition?

    When putting in heated floor in the bathroom floor and shower floor, linear drain in the shower, and making it curb less all over 20 year old concrete that has never been covered, do I need to cut out where the shower pan and drain will be installed and remake the pan? Is there a video for this type of install?

    Watched some of his videos over the years, He's always mess. he can save a lot of clean up job if he clean right after tiling, it is that simple.

    Quick question, I am gutting my bathroom and removing door trim to go down to studs. Do you recommend putting trim back before doing tile work or if trim is removed, tile first and then put door trim back on? Thanks!

    If you’re serious about tile work the Montolit master p is a must have tool. Absolutely love mine. What is the advantage of using a euro trowel instead of a regular square notch trowel?

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  5 років тому

      We feel the trowel ridges collapse better and therefore provide a good bond

    Could you orient the floor direction differently so hat the long side of the 12x24 is against the shower tile?

      yes , it all depends the way you like it .. usually you like to go with the length of the room .

    Does that shower door have a silicone sweep on the bottom of it so water doesn’t leak out onto the bathroom floor?

    The biggest trick with a walk in shower seems to be getting the transition right when there is a linear drain running perpendicular to the transition (so the shower has 1/4”/ft pitch against the room tile.
    Any suggestions besides “don’t do that!” Lol
    Thanks!

    • @Leibt78
      @Leibt78 4 роки тому

      I've seen that configuration more lately and still can't understand why people insist on running the drain perpendicular to the door/entrance? It leaves such an awkward transition that I'll always move the linear drain to the wall furthest away from the entrance. If the H O balks at the extra cost, I'll walk away.

    How did the line turn out at the threshold

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  5 років тому +1

      It became slightly offset so we used snapped a straight line and cut that with the angle grinder, looks good

      Agreed, Curb-less showers are all the trend considering the idea is from Europe where most homes don't have HVAC systems like in North America hence the vent in the floor.

    Once the line is square at the shower entrance, could you just screw down a ledger board instead of having the tiles move every time the square is not being used?

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  4 роки тому

      unfortunately no, because that would ruin the waterproofing

      we don’t recommend it, KERDI-FIX is meant to be an adhesive and the KERDI-BAND is the waterproofing
