    Thank you. This video gave a visual to a customer who wasn't understanding why I would have to lower the subfloor to install a curbless shower. Saved my bid and let them see that the other bidders were actually not going to solve the problem at hand.

    No idea if it's too late - having had an elderly parent live with me - as they get to a point where they need assistance in a shower, a hand-held shower head for the Carer to use on the patient, is key! I put both a fixed and 'head on a hose' with a diverter tap. So when she was having a good day she could do it herself and when she had a bad day the carer could shower her.

    The hardest part of the job is dealing with ungrateful people. They can't find anything to criticize because you do great work so by making themselves look better they have to find fault in a cigarette butt. Contractors should have a site where they can share information on customers. That way you can avoid those customers in the future. They can do do it themselves and really have a reason to complain when they screw it all up. Too much ego on their part. As a remodeling manager for many years I have seen it all. Definitely always best practice to remove damaged materials but On some applications the minwax penetration wood rot prevention is a option. Once it’s scraped out apply let dry and epoxy into area rot free if hard to reach areas - scab on a block to finish off -

    Awesome stuff! I like how you framed the recessed floor out, all great ideas. I’m sure those ledgers add some strength back after notching the joist out too.
    A tip from a non pro - ditch all the blades and get Diablo everything. They cut like butter and last forever. Even when you hit nails with that circular saw. Multi tool, saws, everything. They’re worth it.

    Love y'all and your real life job site encounters.
    My comment about "My Mom she needs it simple", is that seniors need hand held sprayers for hard to reach areas and it needs to be an uncomplicated "turn this, move that, step here" procedure. Ideally controls should be placed about the same general height as the mixing valve as they can get vertigo from looking up/down.

    Any reduction in strength of the floor joists by reducing their depth is more than compensated for by the members provided to each side to support the floor panels. Love the work you do.

    • @m.zehner7145
      @m.zehner7145 2 роки тому +2

      Is that true? I would think that the only added strength related to those members comes from the sheer strength of the screws holding those boards. If the screws break, the boards fall to the ground. Therefore the boards themselves provide no support to fight against gravity, no?

    WALK-IN-TUBS: Please do your homework as they have improved!
    Just like many, I too was worried about filling and draining issues. I took a chance and ended up getting one installed in my new modular home. If done correctly the issues aren't that bad. Most of these tubs have a hand held shower so you can use it while filling the tub to keep you warm (before getting in the tub, turn on hot water and shower the seat to warm it up or get heated seats).
    You could also install a heat lamp above it, which was recommended but I opted out with no regret.
    Make sure your hot water tank is big enough or install hot water on demand where you'll have unlimited hot water.
    FILLING UP my 70 gallon (Cdn) walk-in-tub took 8 MINUTES in November (probably a bit less in the Summer?) and about 10-11 minutes in Jan-Feb. The reason it takes longer is because the (municipal) water going to my hot water on demand system is colder in the Winter and the hot water on demand system slows down the flow to keep up, so make sure you have a fairly high BTU system. (mine is 180,000BTU)
    DRAINING the tub ONLY takes one and half MINUTES! Again, do your homework as they don't all drain that fast! I saw one that could drain in 10 seconds! I also noticed that I am not cold when draining as I like hot water therefore, when the water drains, it takes a while to feel the coolness (like coming out of a steam bath). One could also use the hand held shower to keep warm but it would take longer to drain or use the heat lamp. (don't forget that you can't turn on the heat lamp from inside the tub so you might want to figure out a way to turn it on remotely). Some tubs, like mine, have a safety latch so you can't accidentally bump the handle and open the door.
    THE PROBLEM with these tubs that are installed in hospitals and senior homes is that they are VERY large to accommodate everyone and as STUD PACK mentioned, it takes forever to fill. I have seen some tubs that actually store the water in a tank beside the tub and can fill the tub in one or two minutes.
    ME: I am a male in my 50s and I have a condition called Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) and am able to walk but not sure of my future so my new house is pretty much ADA compliant and yes I have a curbless shower too which I like much more than my walk-in shower as they have a curb.
    The tub I finally got was the OASIS by Safety Bath. So far I love it but I find it's missing some things like a power control for the jets/bubbles but I wanted it because the back is reclined AND the seat is angled (other tubs don't have an angled seat) but it can be harder to get out.
    --------------------------------------
    I don't know why I watch your videos as I can't do renos because of my condition but they are so well made and entertaining!
    KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GUYS!!!

    Thanks for mentioning the walk in tub filling/draining issues, as this is often overlooked. We looked into those tubs when we first ran into some health and mobility issues with my mom (and she’s only 70!); the dealer kept calling and trying to pressure us into buying one for over 2 years. We’re doing a completely off grid home so water and energy conservation is a key area, and we won’t even have city pressure levels. I’m looking at having to set up a dual system with on demand propane hot water for summer and a water jacket and tank system off a wood cook stove for winter.

    • @ppomm
      @ppomm 2 роки тому +1

      Agreed! the physics of just how much water those things use and how long it takes to fill is glossed over (or ignored) during sales pitches. This curbless shower is a MUCH better option! There's a big business ripping out those expensive walk-in tubs and replacing with regular showers.

    I'm in agreement with your thoughts on a giant tub. Years ago we considered a huge jet tub until my plumber (bless him) told us his observations, similar to yours, about giant tubs. We did a quick think and bought a standard sized tub and have never regretted the decision. A different thought, old people get cold easily and that is a large shower. Maybe you could address in a coming video heating the shower and bathroom?
