That is a fine-looking marking gauge, and it has the advantage of being something you know you made yourself-better than one you could buy.

Hi its Neil just watched you make gauge scrap wood challenge 22 what a great gauge just a trick I use when gnarling a bolt for a bolt I place the threaded part in a hole of scrap of wood so the wood rides on the vice jaws when you hit the file thus keeping it straight..

    Greetings
I appreciate your videos - quality, demonstrated skill, innovation, creativity, and no background soundtrack. I will watch this a couple more times and make a similar marking gauge. I don't have access to thread making tools at this point, so will likely add some form of wedge lock.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom.

Outstanding work. I've needed a marking gauge for some time now. This one is easy enough. Bobby Fields answered the only question I had. By dropping the steel ball in first then the put the bolt in, to keep from making divots in the steel Ruler. Good idea Bobby.

That knurling was awesome! Some factory-made bolts are threaded the exact same way, except they slide the threading tool, not hitting with a mallet. But, it's still a good idea for those who don't have a lathe.

My favorite scrapwood challenges are ones like this, where you don't cut up the wood and glue it up into a big panel as the first step. I mean, they are all awesome, but these are my favorites, where it truly embraces being scrap wood. Like it would be possible to go to my firewood pile and grab one or two pieces and do the same thing as you (if I was less lazy and more practiced of course...)

      Dave,
When I lived in FNQ years ago it was considered a noxious weed and was removed at all costs. However, it does have some fantastic colours in the grain all the way from pinks through yellows to vivid green. I made some nice pieces with it as it is easy to carve and join and takes finish very well.
Neil perhaps your mate should ship a container down Melbourne way to get rid of it.
      Regards
      Mike
