As a "heavy rider" I can't tell you how much I appreciate a respectful and well thought out bike video that is applicable for me! I'm on my way down to being a lighter rider, but this makes me feel like I can get on a bike before I hit the 200lb mark.
I am 280 pounds and my back tire worries me sometimes but I just busted out 52 miles the other day and am on my way to my first century soon! 😁 I hope you got a bike!
As an aside, I've also learned more in this 20-minute video than I have by looking at multiple websites of manufacturers. Again, well done.

that is the best guide I have seen/read for us xxl+ people. Please note that the load weight for cargo type bikes is not necessarily indicative of rider weight capacity - e.g. Benno bikes are limited to 120kg for rider/seat load (not that heavy) but can accommodate plenty of extra weight front and rear.
You are really pioneering e bike information in this channel. Great job. I'm not a heavier rider but I get stopped by people who are and want information on ebikes. Now I have a place to send them! Another great video Chris! The topic is important to me as I weigh about 280lbs and am 5'11. Plus I have very strong legs so I can really put some pressure on the pedals, cranks, and drivetrain! I will be posting my own video on my channel about my bicycle/e-bike experiences soon!

Without judgement is a big factor. It’s matter of fact but more as an acknowledgement of human variation. Also - less active heavier riders might feel skittish about accessing equipment like this, worrying they won’t be welcomed in a space traditionally associated with more active individuals. HI from the UK,Just found this video by accident and what a great video it is. So glad someone has touched on the heavier rider. I class myself as a heavy rider 184lbs and inbetween 5ft 10...... 5ft.11. I have just gotten the cube touring hybrid step through. After 42yrs of not riding a bike its been a challenge getting back into riding. Great video look forward to more.

This has been so helpful. I really appreciate all the detail, especially the accessibility points. I had an accident that screwed with my left leg mobility a bit. Getting on and off bikes actually hurts my hip. So all this info has just been amazing. I took notes lol 💜
You can use a step through frame. They are great and not flexible if you pick a nice brand.
@@stamK. I actually ordered the Blix Packa and am waiting for it to get here. (Initially it was supposed to get here sometime in August but now they're saying first half of September so I'm kind of annoyed that I didn't just order the Red Wagon instead since the timing is the same.) It has a relatively low stepthrough and I'm 6ft tall. Here's hoping.
I had the rails of my Brooks saddle broken, when I crossed a rather big bump on an off road track. I am 197 cm and 125 kg (6feet 5 inch and 275 lbs.) Great video and thanks for the tips as I am about to buy another ebike this week.

Great information - thank you Chris. I am currently planning to get back into bike riding after years without proper excercise, which resulted in a good amount of weight gain.
Apart from Riese and Müller, a lot of bike manufacturers seem to omit the specs for the maximum combined weight for their bikes (weight of the bike plus rider, clothes and additional load), which makes the selection more difficult for heavier riders like me.
I would add the R+M Multicharger als another good option here. As a "light cargo" bike it is already heavy duty, and you can get high speed and even GX (off-road) options with all drive train combinations.
Tell you what. Having a hard time finding the right ebike for 6' 3" 350 lbs. One advice would be so a video specific to bike models. Sooo many videos that go on for an hour on get beefed up wheels. Weight rating on the bike. Etc. Obvious stuff.
Here's the real problem: most of these bikes are via mail order and I'm no geometry expert. And local shops don't stock many ebikes and if they do it's one brand or two.
So I desperately need a video review of bikes that will accomidate and fit my measurements well. From that perspective everything out on UA-cam right now is a patchwork of guessing. It makes it hard to put down $1 - $3k on something that won't easily be returnable.

Another superb video. The frame snapped on my Specialized eBike. I’ll never know for sure if it was weight related but they supplied an entire brand new replacement so credit were it was due. Would love an R&M bike if I could afford it. Good call on the cargo bikes too, never thought of that, plus lots of space for storage as standard.
I did hear of this issue with some Specialized bikes. I think it was a weakness in the motor node. Lots of force going into that. Happy riding!
As someone who is 6ft.5 and weighs a little over 330lbs I needed a bike that not only could go with my height but be able to put on extra weight because I use it for everything, riding, shopping and be able to take a beating on both pave and unpaved since I live in Arizona and I found that the Aventon Adventure bikes worked perfect. It's got everything you went over and it's pretty cheap for being such a good bike.
Really useful information and a great relaxed presentation. I'm a v heavy (340lb) back to cycling after a big break and the comments regarding tires, wheels, etc. plus Torque vs Watt very interesting.

Being a larger bodied person, I really had to look at specs before I got my bike. I ended up with a scrambler style bike and it’s got dual motors, so it has the power to keep me going right along with traffic and cruising up steep hills. Hydraulic brakes are a must for anyone over 200lbs. I think my next bike will be either a Tern or a R&M. I really want a belt drive bike!!
In a few plus years my e bike now hauls 220 pound operator instead of the 290 pound rider I started out as. That said I still need all my stuff, drone tools and other stuff. The road always lead to the off road that then begins the next phase of the journey.

Where was this video a few weeks ago? I made up my mine with the bike I'm going with and it the Sondors fold SX. It's has a capacity of 300 LBS and I like that it can fold so when I take it to work I can put it in a corner out of the way. It's on the high side at $1699 which is more than I wanted to pay for an E-bike but with Covid-19 going on in NYC and me not wanting to get on the subway with a whole lot of people at this time. Damn all the bikes you listed is way out of my price line. For those prices I'll get and eletric Moped.

First off, let me say, Impressive video! Loved the content.
Sadly, I guess I’m on the bigger side of heavy coming at 390 at 6’3” ft tall. I’m a big guy and most bikes just can’t support me, for obvious reasons. I am aware there isn’t much in the market, if at all, that I can find. Is there anything out there for us guys that want to get into shape? Looking for something a bit tough for off road terrain, most trails in my area are great but turn to dirt or nothing eventually.

Spencer! Thanks for your comments! The closest thing for what you are looking for would be something like the below. It’s rated for 330lbs, but with some upgraded parts I would think it would be ok.

The weight of the rider is one factor but also how much cargo you plan to carry so this video is applicable for riders of all statures.

Very nicely done video, super informative. I am 115 kg but I ride with my dog who is another 10 kg. We manage on my Kona Jake the Snake cyclocross on roads and bumpy terrain but I'm seriously lusting after some of the bikes you feature. The cargo bikes look very practical.
im about 6 ft 340 with about 800$ budget maybe 900, anyone got suggestions. also thinking about buying a conversion kit and get a regular mountain bike
You might not want to, but you can always go the financing route and just call the financier to make a large first/second payment to pay it off faster. I wouldn't recommend paying that low amount at that weight. We don't have the flexibility lighter people have when it comes to cheaping out. Good luck to you either way!!!

As a big lad (20st +) i found the most important thing was to get a strong set of wheels made . I think i paid around £280 but the wheels are indestructible as well as my weight the also carry full panniers when do some touring .

I myself have lost about 20 to 23 pounds give or take since I started riding an ebike in 2017 so this video wasn't as applicable to me but still filled with good info and I enjoyed watching. Question for you, off topic, if I may. I've been eyeing the Specialized Turbo Vado SL for a few weeks now and it's really tempting as a replacement for the Rad Rover I've been riding but the price scares me. I come to you with this because I know you at Propel deal in higher end bikes. Any thoughts on the Vad SL?

Thanks for the info. Now here's my question. I'm 6'2" 280lbs, live in NYC (terrible roads!!) and on certain occasions, I need to travel up to 35 miles from home to work. I am looking for a bike where I DO NOT have to peddle the majority of that trip. I have looked at the Ariel Grizzly H8 with dual 1000W motors and 2 batteries. I am also looking at the Philodo ebike with dual motors and with an addon, dual batteries, but two controllers. I like the Grizzly because both batteries go to one controller. But I think the Philodo will fit my body type better. Thank you in advance for your opinion.

im a heavy rider myself....im 370(trying to get back to 340) right now and i rejoined bike riding at 495 pounds.....7 years ago.. I see most reviewers recommending bikes for people who might max at 245 or 270. Can you recommend any bikes for a guy 6ft tall....370 lbs...( usually go for rides 15-20 miles but also do an annual cancer ride here in buffalo ny.)..under or around 2000.00. I mostly am looking at ebikes for the heavy weigh capacity and for peddle assist on inclines since im an asthmatic. one person recommended hovsco alphs or aventon aventure 2? your thoughts?
First video for heavy riders I've ever seen, thanks! I'm 270 lbs and I carry groceries that can be as much as 60lbs. Are these weight ratings also including if you carry a load? You'd think they would. Also I hope to go on long worldly journeys with my bike but maybe side bags are not an option at my weight, right? I'd have to have a trailer... but maybe not, just wondering.

what if you're tall, but not "heavy" what are the options there? I'm 6'8 ~250lbs. I like the cargo idea. It would be nice to carry couple of 3 year olds.
We should totally make a vide for tall riders. Most of our cargo bikes would accommodate you with a few modifications like a longer seatpost and perhaps a different stem/handlebar combination.
Thank you for explaining this. I'm currently trying to buy a good "fat tire" electric bike and I am a heavier gentleman.
I asked several cargo bike manufacturers, they almost all Limit the rider's weight to 110-130kg as saddle posts, pedals and weight distribution to the back wheel does not allow more, even when the total capacity is at 200kg/400lbs. For example the GSD. That said, what is the most catastrophic thing that may happen and is not foreseeable when rider is around 330-350lbs?
I totally agree with these points Horst. Really great feedback and comment. The concerns for catastrophic failure would be in more extreme or sporty riding from my perspective. Usually riders 300+ aren’t riding in extreme ways. We’ve seen issues with wheels, pedals, saddles and occasionally frames.

Any decent fat ebike will not only handle 300+ lbs, but the better ones also have some suspension which a heavier person may appreciate

look i have seen a lot of these Videos , great work i am glad to see that this is topic .I like many people started Riding for health or Situation i had medcation controlled Epilepsy for over 17 years then i Started having Seizures. Yes it suck mostly When you cant drive for 3 Months in Some State its 6, during one of these times i Road a Mt bike got in great Shape really miss it.I am interested in an E bike ,Can you give me Suggestion anyone. I would mostly use for Commute to work i have saw The Tern looks Awesome due to its load carry. Good talk mate, given this day and age with quite a few of us with that middle age spread, even if we are not all middle age or even just larger people,
the subject of heavier duty bikes or even other forms of better built personal transport does not get near enough coverage.
As a big dude myself , I would put a good emphasis on the gearing and power unit, because,
some are just not going to cut the mustard if you are heavy, for example a 250 watt hub motor may not have nearly enough torque.
Going back to pedals, I found the standard bike pedals inadequate for my size 14 feet, so after a bit of shopping around I found some Giant brand hd mountain bike down hill race pedals that had a nice low profile with a large flat area for a big hoof 😁,
and I think they also have replaceable bearings.
foot comfort should not be under valued, but those seeking budget pedals may want to look elsewhere.
Thanks! I appreciate it! I do think some motors rated at 250W are plenty for heavy riders. I put the Bosch Gen 4 CX motor against most 500W or 750W motors any day. Definitely a good call on the platform pedals as that’s what we recommend.

Some years ago i did what many others do buying a no name brand 250 hub motor kit from ebay , and fitting it to a cheap but fairly heavy ish mountain bike , and with my fairly large mass at the time (probably around 125 kg/275 pounds ) and big frame , and the added weight of the motor and battery ,
the hub motor barely had enough power to attain walking speed ...... eventually on its own on a flat road after some distance .
Basically the assistance level was almost utterly useless ,
And if you have a few years on your body with hard labor with burned out ankles , knees and hips and need a bit more assistance , not having enough power is just a major disappointment .
In my neck of the woods (australia ) we have the dreaded 250 watt power limit , clearly power to weight ratio was not even given a single thought when laws where passed ,

If you have a gross rating of 350lb. on some R&M wouldn't that limit rider weight to 280 Lb. if bike weighs 70 lbs. ?

That could work, I might look into getting a coil spring if the stock suspension can't handle the weight. We've done this before and it helps that you can swap spring weights.

The only reason why people are not environmentally friendly is because they don't find comfort and so called prestige when they could still with another option. All of my children can ride a bike and I have five. They help and provide time to be active and relax

I believe you’d find yourself disappointed at best. Get at least 500. One thing for certain is that you are not ever going to say I wish I had gotten a bike with less power. Even a 1000 is quite docile.
I also upgraded to the mag wheels.

Tern hsd s+ I believe. Great bike. Hope to buy one for my wife/kids (1m48cm smallest)/visitors/me going shopping (1m98cm). Its very versatile and super simple to ride with the enviolo automatiq.
