Literally on a Dead End Hip Hop watching spree. So entertaining. Myke is the black version of me. Similar tastes in tunes and gets absolutely fired up when someone says some ignorant shit like that female rappers need to be sexy
Lauryn hill is fucking dope, regardless of looks. Also Kimya Dawson and Aesop fit together so well, they trade roles of singing and rapping so go check them out too.
As far as Rapsody, she's part of Kooley High, the 9th cosign definitely helped get her more noticed but a lot of people have heard of her from the group before 9th...
i know this video is old as hell and I haven't finished it yet but there are boy bands that rely solely on their image and sex appeal to sell music. some female "rappers" do the same thing and rely on their image to carry their career
Great Video. I gotta say that the best upcoming female mc i've heard is Snow da Product, she is a beast on the mic and has a mix of an incredible flow with good lyrics
Myke wasn't talking about the mainstream. I'm pretty sure he has a problem with female MCs not being accepted in the underground scene (which he holds to a higher standard).
Feefo is right. To be a mainstream female rapper, the expectation from ppl and to the labels is to be lyrically commercial, talented, rap raw and be sexy. But that wasn't the case with Missy because she was kinda chubby.
Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, and Whitney Houston came up in a time where women in the industry were mistreated and overlooked because of their skin color. Still, they made an impact and are some of the best singers of all time male or female. Today there is NO EXCUSE. Yes it's harder for females to make it but everyone needs a cosign (male or female). Jackson 5 had Diana Ross as a cosign. Prince had Little Richard and James Brown. No excuses.
I definitely agree. Rappers are artists but they are producers in the basic sense of the term: they make their living selling a product. Image is extremely important. In a male dominated environment like hip-hop's this image is most often associated to sexiness for women but ultimately it's about creating a trademark. Missy Elliot for ex. is not principally considered as "sexy" but she built an image of her own.
@LawlessEntertainment that's a good question. The only thing I can think of is that maybe women feel they receive their music based around their issues from accessible genre like R&B. Could be wrong though
It just occurred to me that Lauryn Hill had a 6x platinum (in the US alone) group album when her solo debut was released, and starred in a major motion picture alongside the legendary Whoopi Goldberg 2 years before that Fugees album. She also was a great singer. Nicki Minaj wasn't a major commercial actor in that way, but she went to LaGuardia, and she also sings as well as being on the winning team (Young Money after running with Gucci) and also following Lil Kim's formula. Lil Kim had the Biggie co-sign & writing. Foxy had the same from Jay-Z and others. Trina had Trick Daddy. Cardi followed their formula, and she was popular on TV before dropping her big single. Remy came up under Big Pun & Terror Squad, before being on TV. Missy did a lot of writing beforehand and was already known in the industry from running with Jodeci for years. ... I say all that to say, that a lot more went into our favor female rappers, and it's almost unfair to expect the same from Rapsody, Jean Grae, etc without some of that other brand assistance, or to blame the fans at large for not supporting who they haven't become as familiar with. Rapsody being on Roc Nation should be a major play, because of the touring emphasis with Live Nation & the streaming emphasis with TiDAL, as well as having such a successful team behind her. That will go a lot further than just the 9th Wonder association
I don't understand all the negativity towards Rapsody, if you ask me, I think she's pretty damn good. But, cause she rhymes on dope beats may have something to with it. But I think beat selection is just important as skills and lyrics.
Because we don't know how to time travel so, considering it's not out yet, there's no way for us to review it right now. But if you know anyone selling a Delorean, let us know.
I got to see a female MC live, in one of the opening acts for Slaughterhouse. She killed it! She had such a good, hard flow, and was keeping right up with the other MCs. Not only that, but she was beautiful. Yeah, it was almost love at first sight. I have no problem bumpin' a female as long as she does not assume that all of her fans are women.
We're you serious Missy, Rah Digga, Mc Lyte, Queen Latifah, Jean Grey, Heather B, Yo Yo, Da Brat, Lady Of Rage, Apani B Fly, Lady Luck??? All of them, ill female emcees...Queens if you will. Ladies with skill, class, and who never took off their clothes to try to sell a record.
Nitty Scott, MC looks like she is building a really strong following. All she needs is for you guys to support her. By you guys I mean everyone. She's hot now, she did a lot in last year and she's has an EP coming this year. She has 2 mixtapes out right now. She's worth your time.
even on the male side, Drake was a popular actor and a singer before paying his dues in rap and then joining the winning team. he already had built-in name (& face recognition) and his own fanbase
Yeah, my bad. I commented like 5 minutes into the video and I thought the main point they were talking about were the Female MCs who represented The Female MCs as a whole.
We as people lol and we as a world pay too much....way too much attention to image. It's always about the masses and unfortunately the masses aren't as willing to be flexible as you'd want to be majority of the time. Women and the Construct of beauty that blinds us.
I see Myke's point about women not being able to get notice without a male co-sign, but that holds true for all artist. This industry is dominated by males. Some of the more well known female MCs should start extending the olive branch to other female MCs.
She's easily one of my favorite MCs, but in the realm of commercial acceptance, that's probably not going to happen. She's far too deep. No one wants to hear a women speaking about real life issues. BTW I'm absolutely IN LOVE with her. Just saying.
Seriously, how do you forget about Missy Elliott? She's one of the first women MC's I think of off the top of my head. Glad to hear a quick mention of MC Lyte though.
That's a great point? So Missy, Rage, Khia, Rah Digga and Brat were all really attractive? Even if that was the point he was making that I was disagreeing with (which it wasn't) then it would be a bad point.
Emcees like Azealia Banks are the future of hip-hop for females. That shit is dope. Women can spit just as hard as men. Oh and back in the day, Salt N' Pepa was the shit.
i think the context of feefos statement was overlooked when the convo escalated. he prefixed it by saying he speaking about what a women would have to have "to be commercially accepted". whether its a sexist statement or not, its more less an accurate one. not necessarily pertinent to real hiphop, but still an expectation of the world today
(cont'd). If success = large audience + large recognition, then a female emcee can hardly get away with being plain, no matter how good she is, unless she manages to turn that fact into a highly recognizable trait. That is the harsh reality of this industry.
I've suggested dudes like Shad, The Roots, Common, and Atmosphere to some of my friends who are girls. They like it. Not all Hip-Hop is misogynistic, you have to know where to look.
To me it comes down to subject matter. Even though a woman can spit, what she's talkin about is mostly based on the female experience, and most never go outside of that box. So only women can appreciate that more than a man can. With that being said, why aren't female consumers buying more albums from female MC's?
There's a lotta sub-par gimmicky women rappin. Society + the media likes to determine they're rank based on their physique more so than their ability to make great songs. I do agree that Lauryn Hill might be 'safe' to an extent within the culture in terms of great female artists, but she was also a legitimate threat on the mic. Jean Grae and Lyte are some of my all time faves, but there's also Invincible, Qween Herawin (juggaknots), Boog Brown & even Ana Tijoux. Bars > gender.
yeah men can be kinda ugly but as long as they exude confidence then suddenly they are considered okay. I don't think a lady can look like Lil Wayne and get a ton of respect, just being honest.
I never once said men weren't shallow. But you should also listen to what Feefo actually said before Soul assisted. That is the comment that I have an issue with. And I stick by what I said. You shouldn't have to have any sex appeal whatsoever to be a popular female MC. I'm not saying that men don't think like that. I'm saying it's a problem.
My point exactly. It sounds like a bad version of Katy Perry. She keeps talkin about how much this album shows growth and maturity. Growth and maturity as far as improving upon your sound and lyrics is one thing. But changing up your style completely is another. I just dont think Nicki Minaj knows what shes doing anymore. Im not hatin but i'm just sayin as a person who has followed her from the beginning. Azealia Banks is the perfect example of someone who is doing it the right way.
I think the deeper issue with this topic is...Does society as a whole care about the thoughts of black women? I honestly don't think society cares. Not just the Hip Hop community.
1. This was interesting you all should do a part 2. 2. Jean Grae isn't the sexiest woman on the planet, but she's not ugly..in my opinion at least.. 3. Let's be real, most female MCs need to step it up music wise, that's half the problem in my opinion. Even the ones that aren't selling sex are usually DECENT at best. Hell most MEN in hip-hop are decent at best..so if you have 1000 male rappers and only one out of every 200 of them are good..then imagine how small that number will be for females.
I think mike took what fefo said a little in the wrong way. I don't like speaking for other people, but maybe he meant that the ability to be sexy in part of being of woman. Like having the potential to be sexy is a part of being a woman? Maybe? I don't know i'm just guessing.
Literally on a Dead End Hip Hop watching spree. So entertaining. Myke is the black version of me. Similar tastes in tunes and gets absolutely fired up when someone says some ignorant shit like that female rappers need to be sexy
I will forever respect and look up to Myke C-Town
@Mr. Noname wow. I wrote this when i was in my first year of college. Thanks for replying to it and reminding me that it exists.
9:40 I see exactly what Feefo was trying to say he just worded it horribly LMAO
Lauryn hill is fucking dope, regardless of looks. Also Kimya Dawson and Aesop fit together so well, they trade roles of singing and rapping so go check them out too.
Totally w Make on this one. (Also I live for the old Myke/Feefo arguments)
As far as Rapsody, she's part of Kooley High, the 9th cosign definitely helped get her more noticed but a lot of people have heard of her from the group before 9th...
rapsody dope best ever real hip-hop raw lyrical era
Damn Myke put Feefo on blast 😂😂
i know this video is old as hell and I haven't finished it yet but there are boy bands that rely solely on their image and sex appeal to sell music. some female "rappers" do the same thing and rely on their image to carry their career
Mc Lyte, Bahamadia, Jean Grae, Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliott, Rhapsody, Sa-Roc
Great Video. I gotta say that the best upcoming female mc i've heard is Snow da Product, she is a beast on the mic and has a mix of an incredible flow with good lyrics
Myke wasn't talking about the mainstream. I'm pretty sure he has a problem with female MCs not being accepted in the underground scene (which he holds to a higher standard).
missy elliott? she didn't come out sellin her sex, and she was a fuckin great rapper who grew with time
because she is fat, No disrespect to missy
K Flay is one of the best female emcees I've heard in a long time. Killer live show. Not enough people listen to her.
Feefo is right. To be a mainstream female rapper, the expectation from ppl and to the labels is to be lyrically commercial, talented, rap raw and be sexy. But that wasn't the case with Missy because she was kinda chubby.
+RealChristianSimon ehhh idk, I found Missy very attractive.
Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, and Whitney Houston came up in a time where women in the industry were mistreated and overlooked because of their skin color. What about Ladybug Mecca from Digable Planets?! She was so dope!
Seriously, Roman Reloaded? Do The Block Brochure, welcome to the soil, vol 1,2,&3 b4 that. Or the First Serve joint.
They're conversations get more interesting every episode...keep up the good work.
Seriously guys MIA is an awesome female emcee. Just listen to Paper Planes or Born Free etc
I definitely agree. Rappers are artists but they are producers in the basic sense of the term: they make their living selling a product. Image is extremely important. Please have Soul in more DEHH videos. It's great to have a smart woman's viewpoint.
They're uploading it tomorrow, it's in the description.
Because we don't know how to time travel so, considering it's not out yet, there's no way for us to review it right now. But if you know anyone selling a Delorean, let us know.
The only female MC that I can think of that wasn't directly ascociated with a male MC/Producer is Left Eye.
They didn't mention snow tha product
They are going to do a roman reloaded review? that should be interesting. But great webisode like always.
I got to see a female MC live, in one of the opening acts for Slaughterhouse. She killed it! She had such a good, hard flow, and was keeping right up with the other MCs. Nitty Scott, MC looks like she is building a really strong following. All she needs is for you guys to support her. By you guys I mean everyone. She's hot now, she did a lot in last year and she's has an EP coming this year. She has 2 mixtapes out right now. She's worth your time.
you think so? Kooley high was bearly known then, & know they got a little shine from Rapsody, I don't think "a lot" of people heard of them
even on the male side, Drake was a popular actor and a singer before paying his dues in rap and then joining the winning team. he already had built-in name (& face recognition) and his own fanbase
I'm surprised they didn't mention Missy
Yeah, my bad. I commented like 5 minutes into the video and I thought the main point they were talking about were the Female MCs who represented The Female MCs as a whole.
Totally loving Myke and Soul Wallace in this video.
omg.....Nitty scott MC....Tiye Pheonix....Jean Grae.....Eternia.....Dessa...those are the dopest females in my opinion
Shorty said A stripper that can rap! LMFAO
Most definitely.
We as people lol and we as a world pay too much....way too much attention to image. It's always about the masses and unfortunately the masses aren't as willing to be flexible as you'd want to be majority of the time. Women and the Construct of beauty that blinds us.
This lady had Feefo mesmerized lol... u can tell by what he said when he First opened his mouth.
dope discussion, but why wasn't Missy Elliott mentioned?
@hustler843 sure you did. I went to high school with Nas.
I see Myke's point about women not being able to get notice without a male co-sign, but that holds true for all artist. This industry is dominated by males. Some of the more well known female MCs should start extending the olive branch to other female MCs.
No mention of Missy?
Yall should review that "highlights 2" by SK4MC
Yeah, I saw it, but it was not in the context I prefer. They kind of just glossed over her name real quick.
She's easily one of my favorite MCs, but in the realm of commercial acceptance, that's probably not going to happen. She's far too deep. No one wants to hear a women speaking about real life issues. BTW I'm absolutely IN LOVE with her. Just saying.
Why yall overlooked Amanda Diva???????
They knew if they mentioned her the conversation would end. I mean missy is a BEAST
Seriously, how do you forget about Missy Elliott? She's one of the first women MC's I think of off the top of my head. Glad to hear a quick mention of MC Lyte though.
she's brought up in part 2
That's a great point? So Missy, Rage, Khia, Rah Digga and Brat were all really attractive? Even if that was the point he was making that I was disagreeing with (which it wasn't) then it would be a bad point.
Yall ain't get to review Macadelic! That shit too nice
We do need more female known. but its mostly about who you know. So for now find a away to work the system.
I was just joking, I don't even know you lol. All jokes aside i repect what you and the homies do i enjoy every episode!!!
Da Brat, and Eve weren't solely rhyming based off sex appeal?
Emcees like Azealia Banks are the future of hip-hop for females. That shit is dope. Women can spit just as hard as men.
Oh and back in the day, Salt N' Pepa was the shit.
Is Feefo in the national guard?
i think the context of feefos statement was overlooked when the convo escalated. he prefixed it by saying he speaking about what a women would have to have "to be commercially accepted". whether its a sexist statement or not, its more less an accurate one. not necessarily pertinent to real hiphop, but still an expectation of the world today
I asked this question thanks dehh
Eve was a good mesh of classy, sexy, and skilled.
(cont'd). If success = large audience + large recognition, then a female emcee can hardly get away with being plain, no matter how good she is, unless she manages to turn that fact into a highly recognizable trait. That is the harsh reality of this industry.

Precisely. Why is everyone trying to act like he didn't say that being sexy is part of being a women? Christ.
Feefo seemed terrified of C town at 10:00

Nitty Scott MC is a dope female emcee as well.
Huh? How?
Forget one of the greatest "female" rappers, Jean Grae is one of the greatest rappers period.
Not in Atlanta...
where is odd future vol 2 review
Coincidence, I paused Uh-Oh (Talib Kweli feat. Jean Grae) to watch this
I never once said men weren't shallow. But you should also listen to what Feefo actually said before Soul assisted. That is the comment that I have an issue with. And I stick by what I said.
