To this day I still say Lupe is one of, if not the greatest lyricist of the new millennium. But I went through a phase where I HATED him. And that was during the whole Lasers situation. Fans would jock him SO hard and literally worship him (until Kendrick Lamar cam and it switched up, which really shows how much of loyal fans they are). Lupe is seriously over-pretentious, and he is going through some harsh realities. He needs to humble himself. I will always love his classics though
as a FORMER devout lupe fan...i mean i was a freaking advocate for this guy..i started having suspicions..about him..but i'd blindly disregard them..50 billion people can say they don't like this or that without giving it a chance..but you all gave VALUABLE reasons for your dispositions..instead i was blindly running around with this shit JUST because it was lupe...i REALLY WANTED to like this..but after hearing you guys discuss it..i feel like my eyes have been opened! thanks..
I love Lupe Fiasco. F&L and The Cool are some of the best hip-hop albums of all time, in my opinion. That's why it sucks so hard to see him fucking around and not giving us awesome music.
I remember being in eighth grade when Food and Liquor was released and being so captivated and excited that their was a new rapper on the scene who seemed like an average guy who wasn't about all the POP and glamour, but instead concerned on content and dignity of the genre of hip hop. At this point, I'm unsure if I can remain a fan of his any longer.
C-Town nailed it with pretentious. Lupe is a good, smart MC, but that dude acts like he was sent from the fucking heavens of hip hop to bless us with his message.
Finally, been waiting on this! Im sharing thoughts with y'all..i don't listen to his music for the beats but for his lyrics. But then again, you have to remember this is a mixtape, we all should expect Lupe Fiasco to go back to his traditional production on Fruit & Liquor 2.
I can't hate too much because of his lyrical efforts. Bith Bad is one of my new fav songs. I loved Words I never said but didn't pick up lasers cause of some tracks that were off.
I think what Lupe is doing is saving all his real hip-hop tracks for Food & Liquor II, his next album. He already stated before that it would be more catered towards his core fanbase, so we can only imagine how it would be.
cant WAIT for F&L2 to come out so all yall backtrack on everything you said in this. also that high five after you said double burger with cheese was funny as hell lmao
It seems pretty clear Lupe's vision was to reach as many people as possible with his messages to help better the world, but unfortunately he became part of the status quo and watered down his ideology as a result. The revolutionaries who brought the most change are not remembered or known. Behind every revolutionary leader were the revolutionaries who died on the frontlines with no one to remember their names except those closest to them, but if not for their sacrifices, the movements wouldn't have been movements at all. This isn't to say people should give up their lives for a movement. It's the opposite extreme of the spectrum, and it's to say that trying to work through the system will only make you become part of it. You may change a few things here and there, but ultimately, you must sacrifice in order to change the system. Fred Hampton was assassinated at 21, but he and the rest of the Chicago chapter of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense was the reason why free-lunch became a nationwide program in the US. Their breakfast program is what started it, and many of them were killed by the feds. Most people don't even know the name Fred Hampton, let alone the Panthers who worked alongside him. He lived in poverty until his death, because every penny he had went towards the Party and the people.
Friend of the People, is the most underrated Lupe project ever.. My fav track was, "WWJD He'd Prolly LOL Like WTF!!!"... A song was about Black Friday, Apple, technology, smart vs. rich. So many layers to this mixtape.
This mixtape was a pure masterpiece, to me it took off after the third track, and it definitely had a classic feel to it that lasers didn't have. Lasers got played out to me, I mean I can't even play it anymore while this one got better with each listen. Definitely one of the greatest mixtapes ever to come out, I promise that.
Reezy Does It how do you know he’s a Stan? Even stans didn’t grow up with Lupe we became Stans because we enjoyed his music, so writing off a Stans statement as only biased is short minded, or a favorable statement as being Stan, every statement from any individual should be taken only as word value with a balance of understanding who’s making the statement, and the fact that he said Lasers was played out shows a willingness to not be biased
@Pomaori I didn't say he "sold out." That was the other guys. Feel free to bring that up to them, because I don't necessarily agree with that statement either. If he wants to do house music because he likes it, then it's not selling out. It's doing what he likes. Far as the Kick Push thing, I see your point. Just don't agree with it, but don't really care to go back and forth about it. Later.
Lupe shines with his lyricism & His content is what drew me to his music & is pretty much going to keep me listening to him. For me..Lasers was 25/75 for me..its only a few songs that I liked and the others just wasnt doin it for me. I do think that Atlantic did somethin to Lasers to steer it cuz songs did get taken off that he used on stepping Lasers tour. FOTP, ya he spit over a dub beat but for me, he lyricism saves his songs nowadays & thats what I focus on with him.
You guys just got a new fan. Thank @theneedledrop . Nice work on this review. Lupe is more worried about his Lamborghini collection. He saw that Lasers made money and he probably will never go back to F&L or The Cool until he's done making his paper.
You are correct, they were released on the deluxe copy of Lasers. Both songs were well received in hip hop circles as hip hop songs. Lupe said he liked the music for lasers, he didn't like the politics behind the songs. He was mad that the label forced The Show Goes On, on him. Most of that stuff is the direction he was going anyway. Let's not forget Solar Midnite.
I was thinking about this lately, and thought of this. Put yourself in Lupe's position. You want to get your message to the masses through your music, and the best way he could incorporate his message into his music AND reach the masses would be to commercialize his music. So, by making it more radio friendly, he's making more people hear his message in his lyrics. Not saying this is what Lupe meant to do, but it's something to think about.
I think sellout is the wrong word here, he still has alot of depth in his lyrics, but i do hate his new sound, but at least his lyrics mean something as opposed to certain artists. But I'd like him to get back to his old sound as well.
So glad you guys are taking Lupe to task. I really dig the dude, but I haven't bought anything past The Cool... and even that album with having "Superstar" as the single was a little sketchy... I'm cool vibing with his old stuff, though.
you know someone who tried a new sound and i'm feelin it... talib kweli. The new album him and res (i think is her name) did on idle warship really blew me away. Would like to see what you guys feel bout it.
Totally agree with you guys it is really frustrating because that Lupe from the work that made me like him is missing... But S/O to all you guys, just recently came across your videos and I am a fan of what y'all do
As far as the retirement issue, what about when he stated that contract issues wouldn't let him retire? And the "I'll stay in it for the fans" references in Beautiful Lasers
THANK YOU for bringing up the Bill O'Riley thing. When I saw that I was like wtf bacc up your statements. I don't think he's lying though.. I hope not, cuz he came down here at the occupy orlando. Didn't make it a big deal jus showed up. But to be honest if I'm listening to someone talk bout political shit Lupe really isn't even in the top 5 right now that I would go to. Killer Mike really gets my mind goin
yo please consider a DTMD - Makin Dollas review. seriously y'all should give those kids some shine, they doin something legitimate for hip hop (in my opinion of course) and the type of sound they puttin out for the age they are is something I know would make for a good review and discussion.
Lupe is still real, He is branching out, He even said he was getting into dubstep lately he admitted it, only a 1/3 of it is electronic rest is old Lupe - He is still imo one of the best lyricist this decade...Food and Liquor II is going to be a blend between FnL and The Cool. Also Original Lasers was recycled and thrown out - Real Lasers would've been stuff like Shining Down, What You Want and Im Beamin. I respect your review tho nice job as always!
1. Lupe's sound is probably his own choosing but it was Atlantic that made him do songs like I don't wanna care and out of my head. Not the sound, just the song itself. 2. He did/does skateboard avidly. There's an interview video with him ollying over a trashcan, and if I recall he does some skating in the Daydreamin' music video
All that they said here is proven wrong in 2020. Man this has aged bad to me but hindsight is 20/20. The idea of sound being a problem is what lead to rap being what it is here in 2020.
i think i speak for a lot of people when i say that there is slight difference between today's radio electro-pop and the beats that Lupe used on this mixtape. Artists such as Justice and M83, that were sampled on FOTP, might sound drastically different to the soulful instrumentals that were all over The Cool, but it doesn't mean they should be lumped in the same category as the shit on lasers.
I agree with Myke about hearing the first this is going to be so dope then it just didn't live up. Double Burger W/ Cheese had that Gotta Eat Part 2 feel though and it was nice.
@deadendhiphop Guys I strongly disagree! This mixtape is no LASERS 2, doesnt sound like LASERS to me. The fact that you guys wan't the old Lupe sound is just being unfair, You got to let a artist grow and change and to call him a sellout, lier, or to make a wild theory about him is just not right. Lupe Fiasco is #FOTP, and #FOTP is 100% hip hop. DEHH! Love the reviews and convos keep up the good work guys!
I like the mixtape I don't care. Lupe should be labeled as Experimental Hip Hop because doesn't use trendy beats and drums most of the time. The boy can rap that is too obvious but I like this. I understand why a lot of people dislike this mixtape. I don't have Food and liquor but I have that cool and I can listen to The Cool continuously over and over throughout the day and not get bored.
I felt the same way you guys do now when Kanye's bubble burst for me back in 2007. I had had suspicions about his "intelligence" when lyrically, Late Registration didn't hold up like College Dropout--it felt deprived of the wit, sarcasm, and self-awareness that made Kanye the 21st century hip-hop savior in the first place. In my heart of hearts, I had hoped that Kanye was a Lupe--driven to create endlessly complex lyrics and ideas, but I guess Lupe wasn't "Lupe" either.
@deadendhiphop Someone forward this video to Lupe, flood his timeline, e-mail his management, whatever, he needs to see this. Talent is a terrible thing to waste on his half baked pursuits. The passion you guys showed in this video might just affect him in some way... hopefully. Much love @mykectown; @kbinge; @feefo247; @beez430. Keep it up.
To me FOTP is a classic mixtape.Thee dubstep influences are needed because now in hip-hop artist keep hitting us with the same beats. Also to be honest most rappers can't rap on different beats but lupe can
fotp is good especially for a mixtape, lightwork, soundclash in vegas, love life and death are all amazing songs. it's different but thats the whole point
in replying to mikectown I just feel in the case of hip hop when a fan really connects with an Artist they almost want to A&R that artist career and how their music "should sound" and when that artist deviates from that "they selling out" no disrespect to DEHH for not liking the tape but yall taking x files conspiracy level cats like "I think he made Food and liquor to trick the hip hop audience" that's crazy and I think its reaching dude did what he felt at the time as a artist thats his job
Damn this was a good ass video. I'm a lupe fan but I never knew about what you guys were saying about him and his phoniness. I'll still bump Food and Liquor and The Cool but after finding this out, he's lost all the respect I had for him
I agree with everyone about the mixtape. I excepted that LASERS was corporate driven, but with a mixtape Lupe had complete creative control of it and he still put out a electro/techno sounding mixtape. I thought he was going back to that F&L and The Cool sound on this tape, but he didn't. I had no problem with the lyrics, it was just the sound that threw me off. I hope, Oh I hope F&L 2 doesn't sound like this. He said F&L 2 will be a "core lupe fan" album, let's hope he doesn't trick us again.
damn I love yalls channel but what's up with a DTMD review? I would love to hear yalls opinion on that album. those dudes are doin somethin different enough approach to hiphop that iam sure it would be a great review.
@Pomaori totally agreed. if Lupe comes under fire for not "keeping it real" in Kick Push, then half the rap game needs to come under fire too for being "gangbangers and gun busters".
I with everyone on this album. Lupe was my favorite rapper for a solid two years, lasers came out, i wasn't feelin it, and I thought this mixtape was garbage. Idk what inspired this whole sound shift hes going through but he obviously doesn't realize that hes best when he sticks to the type of sound he had on his first two albums. I honestly think he has become everything that he once preached against and I don't even think he cares. Lasers has 4 grammy noms hes happy.
Lupe been said he had other genres of music he was interested in so it shouldnt come as a surprise that the album sounded like somethin Tinie Tempah would do. I understand though cuz u guys seem to not really care for Rock Hop or dubstep rap but by him doing that, he's getting a larger audience to educate oppose to just having some of the black community rockin with u. Sometimes u gotta branch out & Lupe used his interest in dubstep to do so
I think C-Town misunderstood. Lupe had recorded a different album originally with different songs. The vocals WEREN'T pasted onto pop production, the songs on Lasers were new ones, after the label denied what he originally wanted to put out. If I'm not mistaken, "I'm Beamin'" and "Shining Down" were supposed to be on the album (I might be wrong there tho). But I agree that I think when Lupe saw the success of LASERS, it went to his head, and he decided to run with that sound.
To all the people stuck on the Kick Push comment (which wasn't even the meat of the convo) the point of the matter was I feel Lupe did that to jump on a topic area that was relatively untouched. Whether or not he skated was unimportant. The point was the song was MAD corny. It was a weak story about a kid skating that had absolutely no depth. And the fact that this was the first single was suspect. Why none of the other songs? It's because what other black MC at the time was making skate songs?
i feel like even when lupe drops bad projects like lasers and fotp(fotp wasn't as bad, but still), he at least will give you some songs that give you hope. all black everything was a fantastic song. and friend of the people had that san francisco song, double burger with cheese... i feel like there's still hope for food and liquor to be a return to form
Also, he wanted to be a drug dealer until it got real. Re-read that whole Chilly story. I don't know if I ever changed my opinion about an artist more than I did with him.
I was a fiend for F&L and TheCool.. Seen Lupe in concert like 8x during those 2 albums. He started to slowly switch up his shows with some weird ass beats/songs and after a while I just stopped going. I only fuck with 4 songs on Lasers. I listened to FOTP once (skipped on EVERY track) and deleted that bullshit.
Really generalized opinions, but logical. All-in-all I thought this was pretty on point, people who love these releases are going to love them because they're hipsters or something and didn't know lupe before, they just knew that he was good before because people who appreciate the music know its good, so they will come to you acting like this shit is hot when they probably only listened to a track or two.
MODEST MEDIA FOREVER
you suck, bitch. you don't know shit about music.
Bitchass sellout.
@@TheAceXSatan Which album do you love that he gave a negative review to?
Wtf was Beezy doing at 2:28-2:35 lmfaooo ?
To this day I still say Lupe is one of, if not the greatest lyricist of the new millennium. But I went through a phase where I HATED him. And that was during the whole Lasers situation. Fans would jock him SO hard and literally worship him (until Kendrick Lamar cam and it switched up, which really shows how much of loyal fans they are). Lupe is seriously over-pretentious, and he is going through some harsh realities. He needs to humble himself. I will always love his classics though
when Ken still had hair...
as a FORMER devout lupe fan...i mean i was a freaking advocate for this guy..i started having suspicions..about him..but i'd blindly disregard them..50 billion people can say they don't like this or that without giving it a chance..but you all gave VALUABLE reasons for your dispositions..instead i was blindly running around with this shit JUST because it was lupe...i REALLY WANTED to like this..but after hearing you guys discuss it..i feel like my eyes have been opened! thanks..
Lupe's lyrics are incredible. The way he structured "Just Might Be OK" still has me pulling it apart and finding new layers of meaning.
Fun fact: House music originated in Chicago
Drill did as well what is your point? I for sure would not like to hear Lupe on some drill beats.
At this point, I'm unsure if I can remain a fan of his any longer.
haha why am I just finding this video. they absolutely crucified Lupe.
Bruhman, 5th Floor n
This sounds like the same argument about Nas: Dope content, bad beats.
C-Town nailed it with pretentious. Lupe is a good, smart MC, but that dude acts like he was sent from the fucking heavens of hip hop to bless us with his message.
"Sneak that message to the masses you can call it chocolate rain"
Finally, been waiting on this! Im sharing thoughts with y'all..i don't listen to his music for the beats but for his lyrics. But then again, you have to remember this is a mixtape, we all should expect Lupe Fiasco to go back to his traditional production on Fruit & Liquor 2.
Myke hit the nail on the head when he said Lupe is delusional... He takes himself waayyy too serious these days! Great Review guys!
The only techno Hip hop fusion I EVER liked was "Stronger" by Kanye
Lupe did do a good job on O Reily tho?
It seems pretty clear Lupe's vision was to reach as many people as possible with his messages to help better the world, but unfortunately he became part of the status quo and watered down his ideology as a result.

Harnoor Singh You're a Lupe stan though so people should be skeptical of your praise. No offense.
Reezy Does It how do you know he’s a Stan? Lupe is the truth and FOTP WAS AWESOME!!!!

Man I was the biggest Lupe fan until LASERS. . .Im about to shed a tear after watching this :'(. . it all makes sense now
I think yall need to go back n listen to this mixtape again….FOTP is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
You guys just got a new fan. Thank @theneedledrop . Nice work on this review. Lupe is more worried about his Lamborghini collection. He saw that Lasers made money and he probably will never go back to F&L or The Cool until he's done making his paper.

@theneedledrop LOL, appreciate that...now thats a certified stamp of approval right there.
Yea this mixtape was ok to me. I really loved "Lightwork" tho. I remember bumpin that one all the time when it came out
lyric wise lupe is one of my tops definitely. Listen to Say Something Freestyle or Go to sleep dude is a monster

I just listen to the lyrics and Lupe never fails in that department. Everything else falls in place.
@beezy430 do you know what's the song you guys used on this episode ? I went to check all the Pajozo beat vol.1 and I wasn't tripping it wasn't there.
yo please consider a DTMD - Makin Dollas review. seriously y'all should give those kids some shine, they doin something legitimate for hip hop (in my opinion of course) and the type of sound they puttin out for the age they are is something I know would make for a good review and discussion.

Randomly thought of this with house music seemingly making a mainstream comeback. “Kick Push” wasn’t about skateboarding either, Rob. 😂
COMPLETELY agree with all of you. Lupe needs to deflate his ego, he's not what he raps he is.
1. Lupe's sound is probably his own choosing but it was Atlantic that made him do songs like I don't wanna care and out of my head. Not the sound, just the song itself.

Lupe said he didnt dislike lasers production, he disliked the fact that he didnt have control, I also wanted to add that
Modest Media is right about the shows, I heard Lupe say that same thing in an interview or something like that.
I agree with Myke about hearing the first this is going to be so dope then it just didn't live up. Double Burger W/ Cheese had that Gotta Eat Part 2 feel though and it was nice.

if you threw SOLE or MC RIDE on orielly. that would be glorious. i would pay money to see that shit
Great and really entertaining review, totally agree on Food & Liquor and The Cool versus the new stuff.
i know it just came out but wondering how yall feel about the roots undun cause i think its great
o'reilly heavily edited the interveiw nuffsaid

He already SAID he listens to electronic WAY more than Hip Hop. He BLATANTLY said this already
fotp is good especially for a mixtape, lightwork, soundclash in vegas, love life and death are all amazing songs. it's different but thats the whole point
lupe is a lyrical mastermind
Not professionally but that was his hobby back in the day that what I saw on yt.

What is that song called from pajozo in the backgroud? That song sound tight.
lupe's my favorite rapper, and this review hurt, but i can at least understand all the points made here
Are you guys at Dead end, fans of Blue Scholars at all?
Damn this was a good ass video. I'm a lupe fan but I never knew about what you guys were saying about him and his phoniness. I'll still bump Food and Liquor and The Cool but after finding this out, he's lost all the respect I had for him
i still love kick, push tho lol
Good thoughts all around guys
I would love to hear yalls opinion on that album. those dudes are doin somethin different enough approach to hiphop that iam sure it would be a great review.
yo honestly i really liked FOTP. that electro sound works for him
I really liked a lot of the songs on this album except the ones were he rapped over straight up House music.
But I agree that I think when Lupe saw the success of LASERS, it went to his head, and he decided to run with that sound.
also i loved the Immortal technique reference..i could see him making a lupe diss track called "Nigga are you even Muslim!?"
@ModestMediaTube lol my bad. but i've been a lupe fan since his old mixtapes. i just can support him anymore
Did y'all review Lloyd Banks' Cold Corner 2 mixtape?
Man these comments came in fast! The official show after the show.
Good video. Almost as good as the goblin review.
@800mEric well that makes sense to me. I just didn't understand the correlation since he is Muslim! Thx for answering that.
i feel like even when lupe drops bad projects like lasers and fotp(fotp wasn't as bad, but still), he at least will give you some songs that give you hope. all black everything was a fantastic song. and friend of the people had that san francisco song, double burger with cheese... i feel like there's still hope for food and liquor to be a return to form
"it doesnt bump in feefo's whip"
Really generalized opinions, but logical. All-in-all I thought this was pretty on point, people who love these releases are going to love them because they're hipsters or something and didn't know lupe before, they just knew that he was good before because people who appreciate the music know its good, so they will come to you acting like this shit is hot when they probably only listened to a track or two.
These dudes have this video and are confused about why Lupe said they shouldn’t attack who the artist is and only the music 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@Malkdeeznutz13 That is a solid example on how FnL II is going 2 be and his FnL II intro
