Perspective drawing takes time and practice in order to master. I had a lot of difficulty myself, mastering perspective when I was attending design school. Part of the problem was the simple fact that I didn’t commit enough time to mastering the craft. Without learning how to draw in perspective, your designs, whether it be for drawing cars, products, still life, figures, or any other subject, won’t achieve the realistic look and depth you are looking for.
Application of certain perspective techniques in something like drawing cars, can be challenging. There is a reason why private design schools exist. Learning some of these concepts and having the drive to master them on your own can prove to be a difficult and uphill battle...until now. I created this blog to provide you with the drive and motivation to pursue a craft that you have longed to master.
The reality is drawing in perspective is not too difficult to grasp...as long as you start with basics and try to master them. The only difficulty is trying to commit to doing the work and being consistent at it. Isn't that the same for...let's say being a great photographer? Sure...anyone can pick up a camera and start shooting pictures...but the skilled photographer masters the basics and builds upon them to create stunning images. So it's really about developing your own skills sets and INVESTING in yourself.
Truth be told that drawing, in general, helps to develop both your analytical and creative side of your brain. Ideating and sketching ideas out is a valuable part of visual thinking and creativity. So when you decide to pick up that pencil and start to delve into the world of sketching and drawing, you are doing much more that mastering the art of drawing. You are essentially improving the way you observe the world around you.
The positive by-product as an end result, is your ability to generate your own ideas, problem solve, AND become a pretty darn good artist as well. So the first step in all of this is to challenge your mind to start drawing very simple objects and rationalize those objects in 3D space.
The stronger your grasp in the basics and fundamentals of drawing, the easier it will be for you to build on these techniques and advance to future levels. Without these basics, it will be tough to advance to a new level.
So with that said, let's start off with discussing Perspective Drawing.
The key to drawing in perspective is to make sure that you take a step by step approach. Which means don’t try to learn too many concepts at one time but split your goal to smaller goals.
For instance, to learn to draw in two point perspective, you need to learn how to draw in one point perspective. The next question is WHAT do you draw?
Let’s start with One Point Perspective:
Start practicing the art of drawing horizontal lines on a blank sheet of paper. Draw the horizon line at the middle of the page
Add a vanishing point anywhere along the horizon line
Now start to draw lines that radiate from the vanishing point.
Drawing Boxes in One Point Perspective
Draw a rectangle on the front page from each corner of the rectangle, draw a line that intersects the vanishing point. Depending on how long you want the box, you can add the vertical lines a chosen distance away from the rectangular shape.
Now draw the Horizontal lines that connect to the vertical lines.
Remember when learning how to draw in perspective, understanding the basics is key to mastering the art of perspective drawing. Once you have the basics and fundamentals down, you can literally draw anything!
