How to Draw Boxes in 1-Point Perspective

  • This tutorial is an introduction to one-point perspective, which makes objects look 3-D. Start with the boxes in this video, then move up to other objects, like shapes, letters and buildings!
    In this video, I am using a Prismacolor Ebony drafting pencil, but you can use any kind of pencil - plain old HB pencils work great! Try to stay within the HB-2B range for general sketching. Too hard of a graphite (the higher the H, the harder the graphite) is really light and can indent the paper easily if you press too hard. The higher the B, the softer the graphite, which will create darker marks!
    *This video is also on my classroom channel, DGFMSArt

    Art teacher here: We had to close for smoke today and I was planning on presenting this concept in person. I didn't have time to make and edit my own video, so I searched for a video explaining this concept to my students. I found a gazillion. However yours was the first one that explained it how I would. Everyone else either takes FOREVER to get to the point and get started or draws all the converging lines FIRST which seems backwards to me. Thanks for your quick, concise and informative video!

    I get all of this until i try to draw a box directly above the vanishing point or close. Then it basically just doesn't look 3D or even like a box. It looks like a desktop computer on its side in 2D.
    Nowhere seems to cover how to make it look right from directly above or close to directly above. Are we just not meant to do that?

    • @jesciahopper
      @jesciahopper  7 років тому +1

      If the object is directly above the vanishing point, or on the horizon line and off to the side of the vanishing point, you will only see one side (or bottom) and the front face. It does sometimes start to look weird the closer it is to the vanishing point. I recommend looking at a box in real life and try to recreate it so you can see what happens when the box is slightly above eye level, or sitting directly at eye level!

    Hi,
    I know it might sound a bit silly but could you upload a video outlining and explaining the correct way to hold a pencil when drawing and for the different styles of shading. Also, the correct movement of motioning the hand/ arm/ wrist when drawing depending etc.
    It would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind regards.

    If I want my box to be a cube with all sides equal, then how can I know where to draw the line at 3:50? SInce the boxes are receding from view, I can't just use the ruler. So far, the videos I have watched basically say that you just "go with what looks right" but I was hoping for something mathematical. Same question at 4:47: if I want to imagine that that box has equal sides, am wondering how to know where that line ought to be

    • @schmetd6081
      @schmetd6081 3 роки тому

      It depends on the angle of your view, doesn't it? If you look at a cube irl it's often shorter/smaller/less long than the length of the sides.

    What's the difference between 1 and 2 vanishing points and when i can use them?..i think that i see someone who use 3 vanishing points.....i don't understand..... Thank you.

      Hi Med,
      Great questions. To give you a visual example, using one vanishing point, like in 1-point perspective, would give the appearance of all of the objects "disappearing" into one place, like a road or train tracks disappearing in the distance. If it is a shape, we would see the front of the shape as if we were standing right in front of it.
      If there are two vanishing points, we are using 2-point perspective, which would be like standing in the middle of an intersection and looking at the corner of a block. We would see the buildings and streets "disappearing" to our left and to our right.
      Things start to get more complicated when we talk about 3-point perspective (and 4- and 5- and 6-point!). An example of this would be if you were a bird or a worm (high in the sky or low to the ground). 3-point perspective makes things look like you are looking at a corner, as in 2-point, but also looking up or down at something, with the third vanishing point being high above or below the objects, making them also "disappear" in the sky or in the ground.
      An artist named Dick Termes makes a lot of helpful videos about all of the different kinds of perspective if you wanted to find him! I usually just stick with 1- and 2-point perspective, as that is what I am teaching my students!
