I think my issue is with Waters claiming DSOTM as 'his' album -10 tracks and Waters has 7 writing credits, Wright 5, Gilmour 4 and Mason 3 - it's very much a band album

Yep, he acts like he's the "architect" of Dark Side but Time opens with a rerecording of Syds clockwork room at end of Bike, then Waters copies Syds "scribbly black" term in it as well then Waters adopts Syds idea of bringing a female singer and saxophone player in for it as well though Waters said Syd wanting them brought in was a "crazy idea" and used it as the "final straw" excuse to have Syd thrown out of his own band then got super rich from Syds uncredited ideas.
Syd was responsible for all the stand out ideas on that album which made it such a big seller anyway but he didn't even get a posthumous joint credit for the clockwork room element of Time then Alan Parsons weirdly got the kudos instead, it all makes a mockery of Waters claiming to be it's creative driving force anyway and also makes a mockery of Waters claim to have been "Syds best friend".

You got this issue 100% right, it's different to the original which makes it essencal for me. It's not trying to better it, it's re imagination, it's like meeting an old friend you haven't seen for 30 odd years and finding out they have changed and getting to know them all over again.

When I was 15 years old, I heard the DSOTM for the first time and I still listen to it. I wouldn't say that I do it every week, but I'm sure that in these 50 years I haven't stopped listening to it at least once a month. I am counting the days until October 6th to hear the REDUX. Money is precious. I didn't expect anything more than a change - not with the guitar and sax of the original - but rather something really new and with a Roger Waters stamp. I thought it was fantastic! Although as I said, I will always continue listening to the original as soon as I have life left...

However, you make some really good points, especially the comparison to Mike Westbrook and jazz. Musicians should be re-defining and re-imagining their music, otherwise it does become boring. Matt! After listening to Roger Waters' redux of 'Money' I was very sceptical about the DSOTM Redux and I have been unsure on whether to buy the vinyl. However, after watching this video and your opinions on it I am just about to pre-order it because I feel that every point you made it perfect and is completely fair. I think Roger re-releasing DSOTM is exactly what we all needed and gives a different approach to a classic.
I also specifically like your point of jazz players constantly changing the material they perform and that Roger is doing the same thing however on a much larger scale. During his 'This Is Not A Drill' tour he constantly came in every day and changed the performance and the songs in some sort of way and he did the same with his recent 'The Wall', despite there being over 200 shows and no one complained!! That is sort of what he is doing with the redux. I am happy you were able to convince me to buy the record and hopefully show others that there should be no shame in shining different light on DSOTM, especially because it has been done before and hopefully this version will be better!!

Most of the criticism I've read about this are by people who simply hate Waters anyway. You know, the whole Waters/Gilmour divide. We've not heard it yet, so how can we know? Money is okay, but Dark Side is a whole, and picking at individual tracks has never truly been how to experience it. Like you, I want it to be "different". So I hope Roger stretched the concept a little. And if he can't have a redo, who can?!? Frankly, unlike some, I think it's a brave thing to do. The original is so sewn into the fabric of rock music, it's almost sacrosanct. Almost! But worry not, we'll still have the original in various formats.
ps: The whole, "it doesn't sound like the record" thing at gigs is so maddening I've stopped going to shows! No wonder so many top line acts are miming and using backing tracks these days, it's the easy way out. Whatever happened to gigs including new tracks to kick thing off, and laying into well known ones at various points? Those were the days.

Love the old school homely cassette rack!
Agree with you about The Division Bell. Elevator music to me. Pointless dirges without a single memorable moment.
    Disagree with everything else!
I get that after listening to the same clinically perfect music hundreds of times eventually different performances are welcome such as live/bootleg ones.
But different doesn’t necessarily mean better. Singing in a mock Leonard Cohen voice to disguise the fact that other than that hectoring screech of his he can’t actually sing. The laughably slow pace the goofy lyrics the amateur hour sound effects all point to this being a parody. Yes it’s humourous. But was Waters trying to make a comedy record? I really doubt it. It’s humourous but I was laughing AT it not with it.

However, as it stands right now, Waters has lost his perspective of what separates good music from bad.
      I attribute this to ego.
