- Dave Kilminster was recently in Melbourne as guitarist for Roger Waters' Us + Them tour. Australian Musician's Greg Phillips sat down for a chat with Dave about his gear, solo career and touring with Roger Waters
Sounds like a great guy; down to earth. Will listen to his solo work ...
I met this guy when I went to England (friend of a friend).. He sat in with this jazz band and was great - he can play anything. Talked to him and took photos after -- very down to earth guy.
Great guitarist, fantastic teacher. I used to be one of his students at the ACM about 17yrs ago and there were a lot of ‘ah.....now I get it’ moments. One of the best.
This bloke was fucking awesome in Perth this week. I've been listening to Floyd for forty years, and he didn't miss a beat. Tone, perfection.
Thank you

As fascinating in person as on the business end of a guitar. Saw him three times with RW in Australia just now, he was immaculate and brilliant on each occasion. As a guitarist I felt his every note and noticed tiny differences each night which gave so much life to what he was doing. The band got on a very nice high when they saw how much they were appreciated. By Melbourne's last gig they were absolutely flying and Roger was ecstatic. Dave has achieved the almost impossible, replacing the almost irreplaceable David Gilmour. I missed DG for a short time in the first show, but by the last I was a confirmed Kilminster fan,....thanks Dave for those incredible moments of the most sublime tones, snaps and bends ever heard on guitar.
David Saint....spoken like a devout Pink Floyd fan, but one with the benefit of playing guitar himself. I savored your words...especially describing RW as ecstatic at the performance.
Dave is the best. Saw Us + Them in Dallas and he is so spot on for the music. Dan setting up his pedal board made such a difference in his sound. Just amazing and such a chill guy, he deserves all the praise he gets.
DAVE is the real deal.. so much talent ..
What a nice guy looking forward to seeing the show in Dublin 27th June
Very much a top bloke and very honest views. Saw him with SW on the HCE tour and he was great.
My son Ryan did a mind blowing jam with Dave @ the John Wetton Tribute show in london
It was amazing 🎶🎸❣️🤘🏻
I've seen Dave perform with RW on DSOTM, The Wall, and U&T. Four shows, four amazing performances. I almost can't imagine anyone other than (possibly) Gilmour himself wailing away from the top of the wall on the Comfortably Numb solo who could reach me as a fan and devotee of The Floyd the way DK did. Simply astounding.
So true man, he has the magic. Evident in this interview actually, so interesting and pleasant to listen to even talking. :)
"Possibly" Gilmour?? Definitely Gilmour
Definitely one of the best around.
Really enjoyed the insight on his gear and musical tastes, He is fantastic live. Rock! .I,,I
Awesome guitarist.
Top Bloke - saw him in Melbourne last weekend and he was stupendous - couldn't spot a fuck up and absolutely like you want to hear; the records played live.
Spent the first half of the gig wondering how satisfying can it be playing Gilmour's solo's note perfect night after night for a year? Spent the second half of the gig going 'wow' - he managed to play those oh-so famous solos note for note but with his own, full-on energy and heart!
Absolutely brilliant, and it wasn't jut him, the whole band played some of the best modern music ever recorded perfectly as a live band!
'Animals' was my favourite PF album as a kid and Roger Waters et al played the music as it should be heard, loud, visceral, note perfect but with anger and energy all topped off by a ridiculous light-show. So much better than Gilmour and that wishy-washy Momentary/Division Bell nonsense.
Sad to realise it's probably the last time the music will be played live with the appropriate visual & sound quality but so glad got to see it. Cheers Mr.Kilminster - dead impressed.
PS The only downer they didn't play what still remains my favourite track 'Sheep' - just a complete blinder, I suggest you play it full whack on a loud & decent system.
"Sad to realise it's probably the last time..." Properly stated tb303. I had the same thought during the U&T show. If the gods are gracious and he returns to ATL as he did with The Wall, I will see the show again. I appreciate his music and his art so deeply, the memories I take with me from each performance can hardly be quantified.
tb303 You took the words right out of my mouth! LOL
He played sheep in the "dark side of the moon" tour, 10 years ago... I saw and from that concert, sheep and have a cigar were my favorites. First tour kilminster played with him!
great!!!
Cool guy, really humble & laid back. He's the best guitarist Roger has had apart from Dave Gilmour and Jeff Beck. Looking forward to seeing him with Roger at Hyde Park in July. Top man...
Have fun! My cousin just went and LOVED it. I saw him 3 times.. Best concert of my life.
Un grande
"You can put on a Wah petal, and get away with murder, live. You really can. And some people DO....not mentioning ANY names, whatsoever..."
I'll put $100 on that he was thinking of Kirk Hammett, LOL
Or Zakk Wylde ...
I am guilty of drenching my tone in nice reverb to cover it up a bit....but it sounds really bloody good. I don't feel comfortable playing without nice reverb, distortion I can definitely live without but its cool.
He's a brilliant guitarist I wouldn't be at all surprised if he does something with this when Pink Floyd and their solo work is nothing more than a fond memory.
Polly Ann haha really and that’s going to be..........when lmao
see the guy who blows up the Pigs solo like a boss!
without reading anything, can I ask you is he familiar to Lemmy Kilminster?
It's Lemmy Kilmister
Lemmy....Lemmy...Lemmy...
Creating a good tone is something every musician has to work at constantly. It is the basic skill for any instrument.
Dave Stambaugh except maybe keys.

Weird dude. This guy didn’t even know who Pink Floyd was when he got the call from his manager telling him Roger Waters was looking for a guitar player for his tour. This guy said “who?” 🤦🏻♀️ He didn’t know who Roger Waters was, and this guy is/was a guitar teacher. How can anyone not know who Pink Floyd is, especially a guitar player and teacher? Pink Floyd is the greatest band of all times with so many hit singles! And The Wall?? Did he never hear of The Wall album and movie? I guess I just can’t comprehend someone not knowing Pink Floyd. Weird....
If that is true!!!! WOW !!!
Guy is a Dick !, maybe why Roger Waters asked him ?
Christ was he in nam those rattling dog tags drove me fucking nuts
Power of suggestion is pretty weird, I look at his last name and I think : " Is this Lemmy´s son ? Yeah , he must be , even the wart is there , he must be one of the kindergardenful of sons Lemmy has left everywhere around the globe . "
28:19 don't worry you won't be...
You did a good job, not as David Gilmour but better than Eric Lapton who can't play the Pink Floyd's Solo...
Awkward comment
His dogtags next to the lapel mic is a very distracting placement.
Yes it is. We miked him up, did a sound test and all was fine but then failed to monitor throughout. Things like that happen with a small team. We did learn from that one though
!!!???
He's meant to play Gilmour's staples. Every.Single.Fucking.note. No improvisation, no wrong notes, you know... who's next guys?
To sum it up: Dave doesn't care about anything.
he pissed me off
??
Looks like he turned in his Man card. Relax on the jewelry, Dude.
Overrated
Is he ?
Why ?
30th of June at the Hydro in Glasgow, can't wait to see you again, on my birthday x
troll
Funny :-). See you and the overrated guy in DK in august.
As opposed to who?
