Simple (unpopular) Tips For Low Income Homemaking: Free Yourself From The Cultures Pressures

- I'm Liyah, and I am a 54 year old wife and mother. I have been a homemaker for over 3 decades, living and building our lives with my husband of 30 plus years and our 4 sons ranging from ages 33 down to 10.
We currently live in a remote, offgrid cabin on which we are building our home board by board.
In this video I discuss ways to tune out the world's noise telling us how we as women and homemakers should be, and talk plain and simple truths to be the best homemaker we can be.
Yes and Amen! We are a dying breed sister. So glad to see another homemaker trying to bring family values back.
I needed this so badly. I'm the only low income person in my family. I constantly feel like a failure. Thank you for this video. It was so healing and validating for me.
Hi Lea, saw your video for the first time! I’m almost 74, Christian female and Homesteader. I grew up in an era where you didn’t go out of the house without your makeup on and your nice clothes. You also made sure your house was clean just in case somebody decided to drop by. I am so over that!!! I go to town without make up, if my hair is a mess I slap a hat on, and if my jeans are dirty from working in the garden… oh well! it is so freeing to not give a hoot what other people think! I decided I am just happy being me and messing around with my animals and my garden! Blessings to everyone🤗
I rarely wear makeup & like you if my hair is a mess, I just wear a hat.
I remembered your words when my husband asked me if I wanted to go and get some fuel for our farm today, I had my gardening clothes and gardening hat on and went as I was, your words put a smile in my heart as I jumped in the ute and went for a drive with him 🙏
Thank you for this video! I'm also 54 and met my husband in 1989. When my daughter was born in 1994 I stayed home but did not know many SAHMs my age. Definitely swimming upstream from the culture! We lived in apartments and had one car and it was so worth it!
I am 56 years old and a Cristian since 2002. I married my husband in 2003. I have always stayed home and homeschooled our girls. We are a one income household and it is worth it. They are 19 and 20 now. People tell me to get a part time job now that I am no longer a homeschooler and my girls have outgrown me (I mean outgrown in the best way). I like being a homemaker. The women at my church all work outside the home (under retirement age). I don't feel that calling and I do feel the pressure. I too went through the stage of having a case of the wants. I had to get rid of the emails from companies and the social media that bombarded me with buy this, this will make you happy, etc. Thank you for this video! God put you into my recommended for a reason. I needed this! I gave you like and subscribed!
I agree! When I am low on money, I avoid the magazines coming in the mail for clothes. Now, I am a licensed architect. I eat, sleep, and drink making the built world more refined, improved, and higher-end. This makes for a sticky contentment situation because the Lord has given me my 1968 home with previous homeowners' ill decisions. I live with those poor decisions every day. However, until the Lord provides more income through my work, I have to choose contentment over and over again. ...even when, through my work, I provide better for others.
I'm 38 and i don't fit the culture! My boomer parents are completely out of touch with all our realities. They're hell bent on spending everything on good times and vacations and new cars, etc. They gave a bunch to lawyers in their divorce after 33 years of marriage. Zero intention of assisting their kids and grand kids.
In third grade, my librarian held up a new black square piece of technology. I said I did not want to use it because a legal tablet, pencil, and eraser had worked well for me to that point. He said if I did not use the floppy disc he held in his hand because it was "the future," then I "could not go to fourth grade." I seriously considered opting out of 4th grade. That's been my life since 1985. My line in the sand has long since been crossed.
Same..my boomer parents were very irresponsible and very unhappy. I allows followed my grandparents and great grandparents way of life..less stress and a much healthier happier marriage
As you know we have lived in our 1910 farmhouse for close to 24 yrs. and we still have unfinished remodeling and restoring projects. We finally got the new railing built but have not has the time or funds to finish to woodwork going up the stairs, so it waits, I'm at a point in my life where I am very grateful for everything we have and find joy in figuring ways to reuse, or repurpose things, or even hand make things, rather than store bought items. Second hand is always good, but greater is they are free or bartered for. I also think doing things yourself or as a family it means so much more. Looking forward to seeing more videos, even sharing your journey there on your homestead. Good to see you, say hello to the family from all of us. God Bless all of you,
❤❤❤ I haven’t even watched this yet, and I am so excited to see your face again! Blessings to you and your sweet family and so good you’re back!💗💗💗
@thepioneerhomestead you are so sweet! So glad to see you are still here with us despite our long absence! Thank you and God bless!
UA-cam culture! People like you make the platform worth it! I watch people both older and younger than myself, and channels about different situations. My goals are understanding and wisdom. Plus you all are good company!
Your voice is truly unique in youtube land Leah. It takes real courage to show/tell your unfinished small house (I have one too!) AND talk about what being grateful & content looks like. As homemakers we have a certain pride in wanting it all to look cute & perfect. There is so much of that on youtube already! So much more valuable (to me,anyway) to encourage each other to focus on what makes the home peaceful- what makes US peaceful. From another 54 year old homemaker- thanks for the reminder.
Hi Lea my beautiful sister in Christ. I’m 55 and you are really speaking my language. They do need more ppl in our age groups putting this kind of info out. The more it’s flooded with the worldly way it’s the more ppl will see that they have to live a certain way. I’m just trying to get the courage to start my channel lol. Thank you and have a blessed week ahead darlings 🙏🏽❤️
Oh I have so missed you!!!!! Glad you are back! With the world today I would love a video of how yall prepare your home for food storage and the how you use that storage
@glendabyford8074 You are so sweet! We are glad to be back and thanks for the vid suggestion!
Yes more please. So glad you are back. Blessings
So glad to see you back!
I would love a video showing the past to present of your home and the whole story. We’re in a similar situation right now, no walls, but I’m grateful for insulation. The good Lord has been faithful and continues to provide. After all, our only needs according to scripture is food and raiment. Anything else is a blessing from God. ❤
I'm new here. I would really appreciate a video showing your process and progress on your home!
@ireadnewton: thank you so much for joining us! We are glad you are here!
First time seeing your video. So refreshing to hear truth spoken. Keep up the good work. Good to hear something being said that is positive. I too am a follower of Christ
Lea, Skyler here. What a surprise! I have missed seeing you and your family. I thought maybe you're to busy with life and had left your channel. I'm responding before even watching this because I'm so excited to see you again. Did you know the little house books are on audio ? It's read by someone named Cherry Jones and it's wonderful. I listen nightly. I hope we'll see you more often. As I've said in the past, you have much to offer and so many peop le need that at this time. I'm still working on my off grid journey. I hope to see more of you and your family in the future.
Oh Skyler I can't tell you how glad I am to "see" you and see that you are still with us! We truly love and appreciate you! Actually, because we have the 4 boys I did know that Laura's books were on audio and we have loved listening to them over the years! Our favorites have always been Farmer Boy and The Long Winter. Do you have Audibles by chance? Thank you for your kind words and we are praying for you as you journey down life's road! God's richest blessings to you my friend!
Oh my stars. This was so needed and so important. I have been feeling the same thoughts about some of the “Trad wife” videos, accounts etc. I am sincerely grateful for you. This message is so needed. The best thing our family did for ourselves was shutting off all social media. The only thing we allow is UA-cam and that is very selective. Thank you so very much for this message. I am a homemaker, 42 years old. ❤
Never seen you befpre, but I have been praying for this this week. I appreciate so many things yiu said and even how you present yourself.
Hello, just found your channel and really enjoyed listening to you today, thank you, much of what you said the Lord has been putting on my heart of late too 🙏 such important reminders for us all and such a blessing to be real and encourage one another in this journey. We live on a cattle property in here in Australia and love what your husband suggested about the phrase "make do" too "make good" with what you have, Amen to that! Blessings from my home to yours xx
Glad to see you again and your family god bless to your family
I would very much like to see a video of your cozy home.
Me too! 😊
Me too!!
New to your channel here. Thank you for being a light to those of us who need more lights in the darkness.
I value your information and knowledge.
We are blessed.
Thank you for this. It’s exactly what I needed to hear today. 😊
Leah, thank you for the encouragement. Social media plays to our weakness as humans of comparing ourselves to others. God help us! My social media platform of choice is You Tube. I do fall into the temptation of being discontent with my life when I see a homemaking video of a woman, her family, her home, and her works and feel like I dont measure up and then wonder whats wrong with me. Thankfully the Lord helps me and I dont dwell in those foolish thoughts for too long....but I do, as a rule, limit the homemaking videos I watch/listen to.
This is my first time watching you. Great video! We are 58 & 67 and we have no desire to keep up with everyone else. In 2022 we purchased a new Manufactured home instead of a stick built. No way did we want or need a $400,000 home. We drive older cars, his is a 2005 and mine is a 2010. Simple is the only way to go.
Good to "see" you again! 😊
Your channel is one of the few I watch here on UA-cam. Great topic - Thank you for sharing! Such great tips for an aspiring homemaker. 😊 ❤
Wise counsel, keep going.
Seeing that you posted a new video is such a blessing!! So very nice to see you again. 😊
Good to see you. Would love to see the progression of your home 🏡. Also I say Amen to your message. Find what you like and roll with it. Who really needs a designer vacuum 🙄
And we have the horros that HGTV has leveld across the culture. . . Everything you have said is true. Especially changing from looking constantly at others and comparing one's life to theirs, whether it be in magazines, television, and most of all the insidious messages marketing and advertising pushes. This need to feel special, or that we deserve this or that comes increasingly from this. It only serves one very small percentage of the population by creating an over blown importance on individualism to the point that it has crossed into egoism and an outlandish selfish self-interest. So we buy buy buy, but we also work work work, produce produce produce, and the bulk of the rewards funnels to the top. But as long as we continue to do this, we will further increasing the power and control of the very thing that causes us the most pain and suffering.
I just came across your channel, I want to thank you, your video was so encouraging. Lots of love from South Africa. ❤
Long time viewer who is glad to see you again! Thanks for your continued inspiration. :)
@ncfarmchick: So glad you are still with us despite our long absence! We truly appreciate you!
I have seen women that stayed home and raised their children in a peaceful environment. I enjoyed spending time in their homes as a child. My home was not peaceful or organized. I was raised to work and make money as a primary goal. Now retired I realize I have no homemaking skills. I went out with friends for lunch. Those of us retired did not spend money on impulsive items and the girls still working were picking up candles and many unnecessary items because they said they deserve it. I was 1 of them at 1 time.
As a child my favorite times were berry picking with friends and farm related activities. I remember going to local swimming holes never expensive chlorine pools. We made do with what we had and accepted it.
You have some great valid points and have a wisdom beyond your years.
I'm 53 and have been married to my hubby 36 years. I needed to hear this today. I have been going through serious car envy. I work with people who drive huge trucks and all manor of sports / muscle cars. My Kia Soul just died and my husband is in the car business so he has cars that he could put me into but they for some reason don't seem to be good enough for me. I keep looking at cars I would have to take a loan out on and that's not the way we want to go. I don't understand why I'm having such an issue at this point in my life with this. I just feel like I should be able to afford a nicer car since I have to get up and go to work everyday. But in truth we are trying to pay off our debt - House and put up a nest egg to retire nicely on. When we were young and poorer, I never had this feeling. I would drive whatever ran and we owned outright. and it's not even just the additional car payment, it's higher insurance, it's possibly more gas then something economical. It would really take a big bite out of what we are able to save month to month. Maybe some of it is I have kids and 2 grandchildren (out of our 7 grandchildren) that drive better cars than me, because they do it with debt.
@kellybarrington9057 thank you for watching and I am so glad this was a blessing to you today! I believe what you are experiencing, your feeling of wanting something more than what is at our fingertips, happens to all of us at some point in our lives and for some it will happen many times. My husband always asks me when faced with a decision "is it beneficial for our family?" That is a good question for young, old, with or without children. What type of effect will have good and bad. What type of stress would debt from a new car bring? Debt is a dangerous thing especially when there are other ways around it. I pray you and your husband will be able to navigate the benefits and pitfalls in such an option and encourage each other in this. Thank you again for watching, Liyah
So happy that your back Lea. So refreshing to hear biblical guidance again.Thank you.

Welcome back Leah! I do love your videos for women and home making, prayer and just things related to biblical womanhood! They are encouraging to me as a married Christian woman who works full time no kids yet but it’s something I need to consider about home making and staying home once I do have kids one day
@Jesussaves89 thank you for our kind comment! You sound very wise to be considering these things ahead of time! God's richest blessings to you and thank you for the love "welcome back"!

Oh Dear…I guess as a Jewish woman this is not meant for me
@virginalangford6257 Hi Virginia and thank you for viewing. Do you mind me asking why you might say "I guess as a Jewish woman this is not meant for me"? I am sincerely curious. Thank you again for watching and also for considering my question. Liyah
