Arrogant Language Learners Will Always Struggle And This Is Why (Don't Be This Person Please)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 тра 2024
- Recently, I had a series of experiences that highlighted how some people approach the language learning process. Their perspective, in my opinion, is completely off, and it contributes to their lack of growth in their learning. In this video, I discuss why "arrogant" language learners will always struggle. The "know-it-all" mentality isn't how you should approach the language learning process. It doesn't work out well for you, and you'll discover why in this video. I hope you all enjoy it. If you disagree, please let me know why in the comments below.

Sometimes I don’t think it’s arrogance as much as it is low confidence. They take the correction as a personal attack because they can’t separate themselves from the learning process
This is so true and is probably why people respond this way more often than not.
Muchas personas no les gustan ser corregidos. No se importa la edad. He hablado español y portugués por más de 3 décadas y TODAVÍA yo acepto las correcciones, como tú dijiste. It is frustrating when dealing with the "arrogant" learner.
Asi es!
I have a correction for you. Hope you don't mind. Your first two sentences should be: "A* muchas personas no les gusta* ser corregidas*" y "No --se-- importa la edad". (Edited: what sounds even more natural: "A muchas personas no les gusta que las corrijan)
Pero cuál es tu idioma natal
Totally on point lesson here. Those with any wisdom and/or humility accept correction and know that correction is love. Those who care enough to correct you actually care.
"Those who care enough to correct you actually care" is one of the truest statements ever. This applies to language learning but life in general!
I've been learning Spanish for over 3 years. I feel I'm at a point that I can understand 90% (depending on the accent) of what's said to me. But sometimes I have trouble expressing my thoughts in words in Spanish. And when someone doesn't understand me I get frustrated and defensive...like "I understand you, why don't you understand me" type of reaction. I need to learn how to accept I'm making mistakes and when people correct me they are trying to teach me. You make very good points here
Thanks Zach, trust me, that humility and willingness to be corrected with allow you to see so much growth in your Spanish!
Hehe You remind me, sometimes I got the same struggles to find thoughts and expressions in English and worst sometimes I don’t know how create phrases hehe, I think the trick is listening a lot of, it’s frustrating when you don’t understand any word or anything but time after time you will realize that it’s working and don’t be afraid to talk, everyone has mistakes it’s normal, being humble and enjoy the language it’s the most important, además depende cual sea tu meta con el idioma, yo amo el inglés pero nací hablando español, comprender los dos es maravilloso ojalá pudiera comprender todos los idiomas pero tal vez pido demasiado.
I agree being open to being corrected is important, I also like when the the person I’m talking to gives me a couple seconds to self correct. A lot of the times I’ll know I made a speaking error because I’ve been learning spanish for half my life, but if they don’t even give me 1 or 2 seconds to self correct it can be a bit annoying… but if I make a mistake and don’t immediately correct it then i think correction is an important part of the learning process. Though sometimes natives will correct things in spanish that are not incorrect just a different dilect they’re not familiar with.
Very good point here Jeroni. It can be overkill if they don’t give you time to get your thought out or to simply finish without interrupting. It takes some tact for sure from their side but when done correctly it works wonders.
Proverbs 12:1 NLT
"To learn, you must love discipline;
it is stupid to hate correction."
Biblical wisdom for sure!
You're spot on!! I appreciate your insights as a teacher and a student. I quite enjoy your videos and have optimism in my language learning process, thanks to you. There's something to that idea of beginner mind, as in always open to the possibility of learning and to being corrected. I also think of Yoda, "Do or do not, there is no try," which gets to that same openness, but also thoroughness, as in not making half-hearted attempts. Thank you for your channel and videos!! I have learned so much from you!!
Thank you so much Kary and I’m glad these help!
Man, you've become so accustomed to Spanish over the years of your videos that you are truly an inspiration. Resistance to correction seems to me to be more a matter of insecurity and defensiveness than arrogance, but I can understand why it might come off to others that way, and be frustrating to teachers. It's hard to relax into the Spanish flow when you're being corrected. But I agree, one must have the humility to get it done.
Good point, it is most likely insecurity more than anything. I used arrogance because I’ve seen that in some people as well unfortunately. Hay que aceptar a la corrección porque nos ayuda bastante!
I love the message, humility is the most important trait anyone can have.
The world is so complex, it baffles me when folks act as if they know it all.
Agreed 100% Jordan!
I am a black man that goes to the Dominican on vacation twice a year. I found out that other men don't like to be corrected by another, read between the lines. I found it very weird and would get into a few disagreements. So if you want to speak wrong or bad so be it. I left any man alone to speak what he speaks. It is a weird pride thing. Mind you these are men I am sitting with that brag that they know spanish thinking I/ you do not to impress you. I knew differently when one said to a female "te gustas yo." The other said " tengo un dominicano amigo y me gusta mucho."
My motto is, if I make a mistake and I am corrected I am better for it, but be correct when you correct me. I don’t want to be wrong when right. I don’t want to be right when wrong.
I just got back from the Dominican. My friend and I battle in cards. I taught this dominican woman an american card game that now she is good at. I said something and was corrected before I corrected myself. She pounces on me immediately that is how much she cares. I said "cuando jugamos de nuevo voy a ganar tu culo." The Dominican woman, my friend because she knows that I speak, pounced on me before I corrected myself because in real time I knew I said wrong but she did not give me a chance to say it again. She said no Ken it is "cuando juguemos" of course subjunctive. I knew it was (juguemos) the minute I said it wrong. But to be corrected is part of learning. Some are too prideful to want it. Especially on youtube.
If you would rather be wrong than right, then hold on to that foolish pride.
I am an anal gringo spanish speaker/learner. I do not want to speak incorrect, what is the reason to learn if you don't care.
Good stuff!
Pride is a lot of people's downfall in so many aspects of life and this is a perfect example of that. Some would rather be wrong then have their pride and ego impacted and I can't wrap my head around this mentality. As you said, getting corrected only helps us in the long run and IMO actually shows that the person that is correcting you cares about your improvement.
Dios te bendiga mi hermano sigue con el buen trabajo. Viva mexico, colombia y cuba. 🇲🇽🇨🇴🇨🇺🙌🙏
Muchísimas gracias Jorge!
I feel called out... Truthfully though the reason I don't like to be corrected is because I am embarrassed of my pronunciation! So im just hurting my self...
I empathize with this but as I mentioned as well as you did, it only hurts us when we respond poorly to correction.
As always, Mr. Ben providing some good tips!
Soy muy fan de tú canal y me inspirastes a empezar mi propio canal de YT... Ojalá que subir el primer video en Junio.
Gracias por los consejos!
Muchas gracias Tre y que avises cuando subas el primer video!
on the dot, but I laughed so hard when you said some words in spanish, they´re perfect yet I can´t pick the country where you learned your spanish. talvez puerto rico, cuba o dominicana, ¨pelao suena a caribe. I´m from Guatemala. However your focus point makes all the difference in between socking in knowledge in a 360 degree perspective or being left behind just because of plain stupidity and lack of manners. Chavo hablas bien el español abrazo fraternal para vos y a todos los que les guste el español.
Muchas gracias and I agree 100%. BTW, I learned those from Colombians lol
I definitely agree with you about know-it-alls. They know everything except when to give it a rest.
I stay away from them lol
Being a known it all is never a good thing. Great video Mike 😊
Absolutely! Gracias!
Another interesting and thought provoking video, Mike. I have a native Spanish speaking co-worker who gives me a lot of correction when we speak Spanish. I definitely appreciate it when I understand what she's trying to tell me, but it makes me a little nervous to speak because it feels critical. And I then feel frustrated. There's a fine line between helpful correction and over-correction, if you know what I mean. For sure when I take my italki class, I expect to be corrected, but it can throw me off sometimes too, if my teacher interrupts me when I'm speaking. I appreciate when the teacher allows me to finish my sentence and then corrects me. As I am typing this, I am realizing how sensitive I am being. Lol! It's normal to make mistakes when learning new languages. It's just part of the process. And correction is part of the process too. Your video has helped me see myself a little more clearly Mike! And I thank you.
I completely understand and there is some tact that people should have when they correct you but the corrections have been when I’ve seen the most improvement in my Spanish. I’m glad this video helped you reflect a bit, que sigamos aprendiendo!
@@MikeBen Thanks Mike!
If you have a spanish speaking co worker working with you, first and foremost you are lucky.
2nd you must be making a lot of mistakes to be corrected so much and again you are lucky to have a person that is native to the language correcting you. You should never be offended or nervous to have the best teacher, a native Spanish speaker.
Appreciate how lucky you are!
Good stuff!
@@kcorpora1Having a native speaker is great, but I don't think taking what they say as gospel just because they are native speakers is the answer. I work in a crew of 6 and i'm the only non-native Spanish speaker. If I had continued taking all of their corrections I would speak poorly. Using a lot of slang, curse words and incorrect grammar. Yes I'm very happy that I've had this experience of listening and learning how they speak, because it is very useful, but I choose not to module my speech after theirs.
@@jaigreehouse7504ok how do you know if they are wrong when they correct you if it is their language and you are learning? That confuses me. It is not your language, you are the learner, so how do you know when they are correcting you right or wrong, you have to explain that to me. If you already know then you are not a learner any more.
I don't know who your native speakers are but when I am in the Dominican my spanish speaking friends are postive, solid, and helpful. So the ones you know and are around I have no idea. I am talking about learning and correction from good nature people.
If the people you are around use a lot of slang as you say and curse as you say then ok they are not a good source. Then again if the cursing is correct spanish and the slang is correct, then that is a source as well. They are teaching you how to communicate back to them since you are around them. And I am sure they are not cursing 100 percent of the time.
So to be clear, anyone who works with, has a neighbor, or are around, a native Spanish speaker with good intentions is a plus.
Good stuff!
The good thing is that when those kids grow up and mature, they'll defenitely appreciate being corrected. They just don't know the value of corrections yet. So don't worry about it, you did your job well as a teacher correcting them.
Thank you and I think that they’ll be grateful for it as well. Mil gracias de Nuevo!
Very valid points, Mike. Thanks for making this video.
Glad it was helpful and thank you as well!
From my point of view when somebody corrects me I don't get mad on the contrary, I feel grateful because they're helping me to get better pronunciation, it'll be better our accent if we make mistakes to get a clear accent.
I'm the exact same way. I appreciate it so much, even now!
Excelente video y grandes puntos. ¡Siéntete mejor pronto!❤
Muchas gracias Nacole!
Mike anyone that would get offended when one is corrected saying a noun wrong, then there is something truly wrong. Hair is not horse and Horse is not hair. Ridiculous!
Matter of fact I say a video of a guy that has been living in that country for several years say to the waitress "me gusta tu caballo." I bet any amount of money if someone had corrected him outside of a native, he would have said "as long as she understood me."
One guy in the Dominican came to a fruit stand that I go to and said "puedo tener un sangre?" The Dominican looked puzzled yet knew he had to mean watermelon. I did not care about the "puedo tener" part, but I had to intervene. I told him it is "sandía, sangre is blood" He was so embarrassed yet grateful for the correction. I told him I have embarrassed myself plenty of times in the past. It is not your language, you are learning. Corrections are part of it. Sangre was just on your mind. But remember "sandía, not sangre lol" we both laughed hard with the Dominican. He was cool and we both got some watermelon and talked about spanish for about 30 minutes, brainstorming.
It depends on the person, the situation, etc. Or just leave it alone.
I am so tired of hearing guys say "la cuento por favor" lol.
Good Stuff!
Agreed 100! Que sigas aprendiendo! 🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴
Love this message and it sharpens me to take constructive criticism the correct way. Thank you! I'm about 6 months in and dude, I can totally use you as a tutor if you are open to it! Let me know!
I'm glad this helps! Taking correction well when it's given well has worked wonders for me. I would love to offer classes/tutoring in Spanish, I just don't have time in my schedule currently. I'm hoping when I finish grad school and slow down some with math tutoring that I'll be able to offer it here. Muchas gracias de todos modos y que sigamos aprendiendo hermano!
@@MikeBen I totally understand! Best of luck with grad school! I finished my doctorate a few years ago and told myself I was done with school...then immediately started learning Spanish! LOL
@@timisoutdoors Lol, that's what makes life fun and challenging in my opinion. Sigue adelante!
Great food for thought, thank you Mike
Very welcome
Hey Michael! As Always a Great Video bro, I really liked that your Spanish is being better and more native ( i know that you only talked a little bit in spanish in that video) saying "Pelao" - "Papi" and words like that, Congrats and keep working on that, See you on classes! :)
Thanks Andres and see you soon!
I think I definitely was that learner and I’m a bit better now but honestly I’m just hiding it 😅. There’s books that talk about how to learn and the first thing they say is to adopt a humble attitude. It’s paramount if you want to have an open mind and improve. Being arrogant or having a big ego can on one hand help motivate you work hard but it will get in the way of your ability to absorb information and change your habits, ideas etc. And if someone is taking their personal time to teach you of course they’ll stop instructing you because you’re being so negative.
Why was I arrogant or why am I still arrogant on the inside (I do my best to suppress any non humble thoughts whenever someone is giving me feedback or advice). #1 I’m sensitive. I’m trying my best and I want to praised not criticized. #2 especially with language learning I’m aware of a lot of my shortcomings. Having them pointed out can motivate me to work on them more but I already know about them. And improving things like pronunciation is really hard and some people even live in a foreign country for the majority of their lives and plateau and stop getting better. It might be that they don’t care or it might be that they simply can’t.
But I observe other students and when I see someone who seems really good at taking constructive criticism I’m always really impressed and think I need to try to be more like that wise you can tell they’re probably going to improve faster. And they just seem more polite and easier to get along with.
I definitely empathize with those two points Paul, they are very real feelings that many of us go through, as you mentioned though, often it’s best to suppress them lol. I’ve found that I’ve learned the most and stopped making so many errors because someone slightly pulled my coattails and said “Mike, eso no se dice”. It’s helped me tremendously!
I'm going to unsubscribed and resubscribe because I have the notification bell, the subscription, and still haven't received any upload notifications yet again 😢. Oh well at least I can binge.
I cant lie i hate being corrected on pronunciation things that are more choice than right or wrong. I take the criticism but i will point out that people from x region pronounce it like that and i come from a place were native speakers of different areas intermix and pick up different sayings rhythms and pronunciations from each other. I understand that how i naturally learn will be scrutinized in ways that native speakers wont be but there are certain phrase and sounds that ive studied and know are regional so just tell me it inconsistent with whatever accent i seem to have rather than its right or wrong.
This I can understand, if they're being super critical because of a word choice that has to do with a regional dialect, then that is different, I'm more so referring to obvious grammar mistakes and pronunciation mistakes that make it hard for someone to be understood. Rejecting these is a bad idea in my opinion.
In the example you gave I don't think the child was arrogant just ignorant and he was convinced he was saying it right. 🙂It just was coming out his mouth wrong...
Agreed, that student definitely isn’t arrogant, I was just using that situation to springboard into other learners that take an arrogant or overly confident approach to learning. Él es buen estudiante y tan intelligente también! Sabe cómo pienso de él ✊🏾
Man i was just thinking abiut this. Inwas corrected by a natice speaker and i got excited because now i knew how to say it like a native. But ive also dealt with pwople like this who literally say "yeah yeah yeah..." as i try to make my point. Also, wxtra points for the PSG shirt after their recent league title. 😎
Thorpeland you and I are so similar. I’m thankful when I get corrected as well and I hate know it alls. I get away from them as soon as I detect it lol. Gracias también por lo del PSG, los campeones ⚽️⚽️⚽️
Mr Benjamin are you is me klivensleyjean I have miss you so much
Klivensley! I hope all is well, keep up with your English studies. I miss teaching you as well. Have a great summer and a great school year next year. Tell your brother and parents that I said hi.
Great advice. How can you be a learner if you already know it all????????
Exactly! Hay que ser humilde
If i can ever get good at Spanish
You can, hay que estudiar papi
Maybe he can't yet hear the difference between speak and sp**. So long as you let him know he may not be able to hear the difference you've done your job. I wouldn't have told him it's a bad word unless he used it in the context of the bad word. He was probably embarrassed you were accusing him of using a bad word when in reality he was not. He was merely pronouncing "speak" incorrectly. As a teacher of children you should teach correct pronunciation, but teaching slurs isn't necessary, as children learn those on their own. If it's an adult student it's ok to cover slurs because adults are supposed to be mature enough to know not to use them.
I see your point here, I never teach them the meaning of bad words but I do let them know that they are saying bad words if they say them. Reason being, often other kids try to get kids that are learning English to say bad words or racial slurs. Again, I don’t teach them to the students but if they say them, I do let them know that they’re bad words so that they don’t allow the other kids to mess with them. It defends them a bit if that makes sense. Trust me, I know from first hand experience. I had a student tell me that another student was having her say some terrible things in front of the class simply because she didn’t know what she was saying. Very embarrassing for her. Gracias por los consejos!

@@MikeBen when the street interactions video coming?
Hey mike what would you say the total overall study hours you have done so far with spanish up today? Thanks.
I don't know. This is a lowball estimate that you can do the math on. From January 1st of 2020 to now, I've spent at least an hour a day interacting with the Spanish language in some form; studying grammar, reading, listening, speaking, translating, writing, etc. This is a low estimate seeing that often it was more than an hour but either way. Jan 2020 - May 2024 = 53 months. 30 days in a month on average turns into 1590 days and one hour per day over that time period is of course 1,590 hours.
@@MikeBen got it. Thanks Mike. Keep going and keep racking up them hours!

Do you think self teaching is a mistake
Not at all, that along with the help of a language partner/tutor is great.
I had similar experiences with Spanish learners here on UA-cam. Whenever I try to correct their Spanish grammar they say I’m ignorant IN MY OWN LANGUAGE. I’m like, are you kidding me? Are you seriously trying to lecture me in the language I speak and have dominance over? Good luck with that, just know that my grades in school were no less than 94% in Spanish classes.
This baffles me as well, native English speakers telling Spanish speakers how the language should be spoken. Smh 🤦🏾♂️
Lol...I know what you say to be true...no tiene sentido!
I respectfully disagree , I'm currently learning Spanish , and yes I don't like to be corrected , but its for a reason , most of us learning Spanish in the beginner stage was exposed to grammar , but its not going to fully stick yet, so as long as you can understand what Im trying to say, I think you should let it go , knowing I know I'm currently speaking broken Spanish and only hearing it more will cement grammar , not correcting me , that won't help , just my opinion
I see your point, there is a balance when you're that early on. I do think that this mentality, if sustained, leads to "poorly spoken" Spanish over the long haul. Nothing wrong with us having a different opinion though. Please keep us updated on your Spanish as you continue to progress
