I too am a veteran, 76, and left with some mobility issues after a concussion a few years back. Spend a lot of time in bed looking for such interesting stories, when I can shuffle out to the bathroom, kitchen & back deck where I can still do some container gardening, celebrating tomatoes, cukes & green beans. It ain't much after an active life but it's what I got, so try to enjoy it, though chronic pain further impairs movement & a lot of discomfort. Always hoping for any level of improvement no matter how small or infrequent. : )
Same deal. Flat on back and bored stiff 😂 Eyes get too tired from watching videos and reading books. I’d be super happy to shuffle anywhere but I have high hopes this won’t be my life too long!
Joseph Merrick’s tragic tale never fails to make me feel such sorrow and empathy for the poor man. The way he was subjected to disgust and judgement is despicable. The person who stole his life savings and left him stranded, homeless and penniless in the lowlands of Europe was a heartless and cruel person. I can’t believe his bones still haven’t been laid to rest. Hearing that his skeleton is still on display at the Royal London Hospital makes me so angry. Can they not just make a mould of his bones and give him a respectful burial?
Reminds me of the part in the Lynch film when the nurse, Mothershead, yells at Treves that he’s just making a spectacle of him again, no different to how he was treated as a sideshow performer. She was right. Part of me is grateful that he was able to spend his last days with some small ounce of dignity and comfort in the hospital, but Treves’ motivations were purely out of personal benefit, not out of true concern for Joseph or his safety. He wanted to be remembered as the doctor that found the elephant man, he knew he was incurable and that he would be treated as a specimen, not a man.
I can remember a line from a television drama, where a member of the peerage recollects, "I remember having a picnic on the grounds with nanny and a well dressed handsome couple on horseback stopped and inquired about how I was. I replied politely and afterwards learned they were my parents."
Mr. Merricks life story breaks my heart. Why are some people seemingly born to suffer like this? To think of him trying to earn a wage, to think of him never being held or caressed after he lost his mom, and later thinking of him just trying to figure out a way to sleep and breathe at the same time. I wish I could go back in time and have him as a friend, and to offer support as well.
It really is heartbreaking when you think about Mr. Merrick's life. His suffering was so intense, yet he showed incredible resilience in the face of such hardship. It's a painful reality that many people, like him, are born into circumstances that are beyond their control. But do you think there's a way we can help shift this narrative, not just for individuals like him, but for anyone who feels trapped in a situation of suffering? Could we, as a society, do more to provide that kind of support he desperately needed?

When researching for your report, did you run across the description of the "bed" that was made for Mr. Merrick at the London? It was described as being a sofa-type article, contoured to fit his body, to better accommodate his need to sleep sitting up. It's a missing part of the story that would seem to disprove absolutely the "he tried to lie down to sleep like a normal person" theory about his final moments -- and lead more to the conclusion that his heavy head, the lumpy and painful soles of his feet, and the general and severe weakening of his body just culminated one day in an attempt to get out of "bed" where he lost his balance and toppled backwards.
I think a lot of people can relate (on a much smaller scale) to the feeling of being ostracized because of how we are perceived by those who don't have a clue who or what we are.

Thank you for relating a rarely related feature of the workhouse system. It was overwhelmingly a cruel institution, but there was the occurance of doctors donating time and services to inmates such as Merrick for interventions such as the operation on his mouth. Because those who were were so destitute were forced into these institutions, they were then brought to the attention of such medical people, who could then treat them. where they otherwise might never have received care. These compilations are so informative to watch as well as listen to how you describe them. I did find it a little amusing when you had difficulty with "Women's Boxing" though it was refreshing to hear your laughter. Thank you so much for continuing the content presented thus far 🙂
So nice to hear about Amy another Aviatrix living dangerously. No pun intended but the fame of Amelia Airhart (sp?) has been done to death. Thank you for your very precise history lessons with your excellent voice. I look forward to each new one.😊
I'd never heard of Amy. Glad to know her accomplishments.
Look up Bessie Coleman, the first American woman of color to earn a pilot's license.
Earhart wasn’t actually that skilled of a pilot. She was just famous. She wasn’t even familiar with the correct use of the radio and chose a radio operator who wasn’t great either. It’s what got her killed
Yes indeed! I wear a shirt with her image on it, flight hat on head and looking dignified and determined.
Just doing what she wanted to do; not asking for permission to set her own wings!!
Bessie Coleman!!
I Really enjoy your videos Paul, you deliver them so well, with respect, passion and humour (when needed) I look forward to all new material, I just love your lovely Scottish gentle voice, great for storytelling, hope you are well xxx 👏👍💜

I love the story of the women boxers. I practice karate and recently got into MMA. It's wonderful to hear stories of badass women blazing the trail for modern women like myself 🤘🏻
You are awesome, and I wish you great success in life!
Have fun - mimicking men (a.k.a. - "blazing the trail"):

An excellent compilation. I hope that you will show us more of these histories. I, too, appreciate there production values, while the lapses from poker-facedness into giggles were a welmex addition to the mix.

You tell all the stories love. I loved those big readers digest books
Amy Johnson truly was a daring Woman. I like the Statues.
I love the women's boxing portion. Shows how important it is to preserve these spaces and sports for women.
what are we preserving them from, in your opinion? i always wanna know how can i do better to support women’s spaces is one reason why i ask.
Hahaha you can support them by letting mediocre dudes claim to be women and then smash the competition funny how men don't need protection but women are equal 😂
A tiny good salvaged from a great evil.
Excellent!! So happy to have found this channel. Enjoy your stories! I love history
I have to say, I absolutely love your outtakes!
Love your historical accounts. Well done!
I love these bloopers. I laughed til I cried. Thank you
Where?! I don’t see any
Amy J, trailblazer extraordinaire and an undeniable National Hero. 💖
Blazed a trail - every time she crashed; and a hero to the hungry sea-life - who wanted nibbles.
@@dantelovesbeatrice a bit harsh don't you think? More so given there is some suggestion she died to friendly fire causing her to crash in the Thames Estuary.
Thanks
Thank you so much! ☺️
Really enjoying your compilation and narration. The vests are pretty cool 😎
A historical “Well I Never” compilation, proving that dreams DO come true.
Best thing to watch after just waking up! Hello to you Paul!
Hello! Happy Friday 😁
I am subscribed and really really enjoy you, your voice and your content but most of all your execution of it. Very cool...
