    This is how true crime should be done: From a historical perspective, long after anyone directly affected has passed. Without taking that time, true crime is just exploitation - turning a horrific event into entertainment, even as families could still be grieving.. Thank you, Well, I Never, for taking that time. This channel proves over and over that there are plenty of fascinating stories that can be told without crossing that line.

      @@TomFromUA-cam Well, I have to applaud Mr Ballen for his success Tom, but I personally don't appreciate being taken for a mug with clickbait titles and stories I had heard but to which he had added his own version of events for dramatic effect. I unsubscribed after his Clint Eastwood vid nearly a year ago, entitled 'Someone You Know Was On This Plane!" The story was *totally* exaggerated and much nonsense was added. I had already heard Eastwood's version, which I took to be fact. Whilst Ballen's antics have worked for him financially and he has many adoring subscribers, I personally prefer honest channels/ storytellers. No hard feeling intended though. Each to his own ✌

    My great great grandfather (on my dads side) DC James Anderson was the detective who caught Amelia Dyer. When my grandparents passed away, my dad found the evidence (the parcel found in the river that you included at 30:27) in their attic - detectives could keep evidence back then - and took it to the Reading Police Museum.
    What’s also weird is that my mum’s great grandmother moved into Amelia Dyers house in Reading after her. Years later, my mum and dad met and ended up married.

      Because there's no hero. No happy ending. Nothing to leave the audience feeling good. She wasn't even a serial killer. Hell she easnt even the murderer. Everyone dies. No real reason. Without the forensic science that we have and the world being huge without the internet, people could commit a murder and move to another town or take a boat somewhere and that was the end of that case. Also you’re right, with laws like a servant killing their employer being the worst thing in the world, social standing was everything. Now it is just money not social standing, but it amounts to the same thing maybe.

    Some say that the world is at it's worst today, but looking back at history and it's vile events such as chronic plagues, famine and war where you were lucky to make it to 20- I'd say humanity has gotten better. The crimes were atrocious as well, and how they were handled is nothing short of a crime in itself. How in the hell did anyone deal with life sober back then? Probably why alcohol played a key role in humanity for centuries.

    This channel came up as a suggestion after watching another favourite true crime storyteller of mine. Why wasn't this suggested earlier??? Absolutely brilliant!!! Whoever you are Mr. Narrator, you have got this down to perfection. The atmosphere, the studio (if I may call it that), the fascinating stories, and even your attire, make it eerily feel like you are actually reporting these horrific crimes from the times they took place. A sort of "News At Ten" from the past. And the added illustrations and "live scene" shots complement the story telling. With the current trend for a return to some imaginary, rose tinted glorious past people need to take note of the reality of the past.
    While I studied for my History degree a fellow student and myself used one of our holidays to do some research into a subject we'd both run across in other academic modules. We looked into the instances of women taking their own lives due to finding themselves destitute, pregnant or generally crushed by the harsh and cruel attitudes of those who handled the levers of power in the class ridden Victorian society. We concluded that those who dwell on a return, for instance, to a society governed by such values are deluding themselves with their highly selective view of the past.
    Thank you for another fabulous piece of work Paul. I do hope you excellent videos help to educate and inform people who haven't been exposed to the harsher realities of our country.

I really appreciate the calm, factual, and respectful manner in which you present the details and information of a story or case, and the moments of wit, breaking expression, or occasional giggles are perfectly sprinkled in. Especially for the stories set in England, I love that you go to their present day locations to show them as well. Rambling now, but again, amazing work, and thank you for sharing it with us!

    A stellar job again, with entrancing narration! Thank you from across the pond for busting myths surrounding HH Holmes. He wasn't a serial killer. What I love about these Victorian true crime accounts is that they prove race has nothing to do with crime. Neither does gender. But poverty, usually due to classism and withholding opportunities will certainly motivate people to commit crime in various ways and the constant oppression of poverty will make you put empathy to the side and encourage exploitation amongst the higher classes.

    • @locklear7937
      @locklear7937 2 роки тому +12

      Yep, it's been proven that education, opportunities and financial stability halves crime. If people aren't desperate, why risk it all? Most prefer to live normal lives, with only the looney fringe being those who commit crimes.

      Really? And then we had the case of the two brothers who turned out totally differently. It's often like that. One member of the family going off the deep end and the rest look on in horror or never had a clue that was happening. We see that all the time. There used to be the phrase "poor but honest."

      @@653j521 I don't think either of the first 2 commenters were excusing anything, just stating facts. Like yeah it's wrong to commit crimes but the simple truth is, the more money is concentrated at the top, the more crime you're going to have. And it's interesting that you praise someone who is "poor but honest" as if dishonesty is the default character of poor people. There's pllllllenty of dishonest rich people, many of whom got rich BY BEING dishonest.

      Thats very manipulative thus typical. It proves it does but that one of each was manipulative enough throughout history to make their own and others overlook and look elsewhere. Its not that it has nothing... its all about positioning. Whatever one group hasn't done as much is often because they haven't had the same opportunities via positioning to do so

      Yes!! The number of very serious crimes that go unsolved today in Britain is truly shocking!
      The police don’t even have a suspect in over 30% of the women murdered in recent decades. Less than 2% of rapes reported to the police get to court!!
