Big shout out & THANKS Trent for letting grandson Grayson & Papa Pilot Pat get a great photo op with our favorite UA-camr at KMAN🤙 Keep Flying low, slow and safe! (Thanks Ty Ferkin for Trent coming to Idaho’s backyard backcountry often)😎
Trent, @StuPierce77 pretty much summed up what I was thinking about posting. It was very decent of you to feature one of your flying buddy's aircraft on your channel. Toby was beaming from ear to ear regarding the recognition of his built aircraft! Toby's humble attitude but very informative commentary is what the GA flying community needs to keep promoting! The brother and sisterhood of Back Country Flying is an epic experience, I'm sure! I thoroughly enjoyed this video, showcasing other aircraft, and it is due in part to the humbleness of the recognized individual! Maybe a little more formation air to air and a wingman fly along, if possible, would be another awesome adventure! Thanks for sharing!
I got in touch with an out fit that does glass panel conversions. I got a complete set of gauges, radios incl 2x VORs, breaker panel EVERYTHING FOR $680. i already had an old Garmin Colorado GPS I use for hunting season so I use that for back up navigation and a Nav app on my phone as additional back ups
Had two pacers. 2438A and 1579A. Only issues were engine leakdown tests. Top overhauled both myself under A&P supervision. Flew the first one deep into Canada fishing trip after top OH. Never a problem. Second one was my buddies, subsequent recover. Owner was SCARED of it. Had no problem with it. Got used to squirrely-ness right away. Loved both the Pacers. Wished I had another. Flew C-180s never a problem. Flew PA-15s, PA-17 etc never an issue. Natural born tail dragger pilot. Flew Acrobatics in a Citabria, lots of fun.
DAAAAAMN. A 39' 7' wingspan is awesome. I thought my DA40 had a crazy span. Must be a similarly healthy wing load. Trying to find a hangar that wide is another story I imagine. For me it is.
Very cool build. Almost sounds like Toby built a ‘Bushmaster’ which is a common lengthen and widen mid done to the old Pacers when converted to experimental. Very capable and stable platform with the huge wingspan and extra effectiveness of the tail feathers.
I owned a Super Pacer. Fully stc’d. Mine was brought from Canada where Simpson aviation built it. ‘My’ a/c was then certified and stc’d for US use. Pre-bush wheel. Ran drag slicks on 15” centerline rims (also stc’d).
Pacer is a great bush plane. Just a hand full of mods, will make it preform better than a 180 in the stol world but not quite super Cub. Stretch it, put bigger wings on it and it will go toe to toe with a Cub.
Our son's SAE Aero Design team in college was having trouble with their design for competition. My husband may have tried to drop a hint about the tail being too short. The competition features RC airplanes that can lift heavy weight. But first, the plane must be able to fly. Bigger wings may lift more weight. Bigger wings also require a bigger tail. That year they never did create a plane they could control.
Hi Trent, another great video and it is great seeing differnet planes and hearing the thinking that is going on with the design. I don't know if you are going to be in Idaho on May 4th, but the Mountain Home airport U76, East of Boise, is going to have a fly-in in the morning. It would be fantastic if a bunch of bush planes dropped in for a visit. Thanks for your great content!
After I saw the opening shots I thought to myself, "the only thing Pacer about that is the cockpit." Then first thing he confirmed it. Impressive all the way around.
That's really cool!! Hats off to "fellow old guy" (I'm 72)!! I was always a little leery about the X-pacer's. I didn't think there was enough beam in the center of the wing, they always looked a little "floppy". 5 extra feet on each side, you can make it as "beefy" as you think it needs to be. I like the extra tail also, I would even go higher. You can make everything the way you want it!! I'd like another 50kph to the Vne, even though it would never see that!! 8) Peace --gary
I just landed @ KMAN and saw you pulling away from fueling up by the cafe on Friday about 1300,on 4-19. I was in my Cherokee 180, (5177W). This was the third time I just missed being able to get a close up look @FreedomFox😢 One day the stars will align or when I sell/trade 77W for a proper back country plane it will be more likely. 😂
Oh wow!, I didn’t know a person could take a certified and turn it experimental, I might have made different choices 3yrs ago .🤔😊 learning stuff everyday 🤗
@@tobesmith3832 The first time I saw them was on a B-52 in Air Force tech school and then on the aft part of the fuselage of the B-1B when I worked for Rockwell in testing.
Toby did to his Tri-Pacer what Milo a family friend developed into an STC in the 1970s. I don't remember exactly what it was called. But Super 22 and Super Pacer come to mind.
They do slow down the cruise speed, but the shorter takeoff and the low stall speed make up for it. You have to realize that they’re purpose built airplanes.
It's better than we know. I've been buried in soup and have watched a young kid drive the diminutive pacer through Colorado Rockies onto Alaska. Now he's a great attorney.
You know how you always got to Jeff’s house in the Idaho backcountry where is it what’s the name of the airstrip I want to fly there in my flight simulator
Not sure how he did this “de-registration.” Tried doing this with the Denver FSDO and they absolutely shut me down. The build was done off of the original Piper TCDS meaning it is a certified aircraft. I would love to know what FSDO he used that allowed him to make this fall under the “amateur built experimental” category.
I don’t remember exactly what her empty weight was, and I’m not anywhere near my logbooks right now, but I think it was around 1250. She came out a little heavier than I wanted. But then they always do.
Somebody needs to explain how this is still a certified aircraft? Is he an A&P/IA? Did he change the wing design? Did he change the engine size? Ect....?? I would like to know how he did this to keep it certified. Is everything he did an STC? Or DAR sign off?
Nevermind. It's in the Experimental category. The owner was miss leading when he said he could keep a major part and keep it certified. Still not sure what he meant by that tho?
Sorry, I’m old and misspoke. The plane is experimental amateur built. I was able to do that using a major component, the cockpit cabin. I still managed to build more than 51%.
Being experimental allows the freedom to choose avionics and other parts that are not pma’d. And with a repairman’s certificate it allows you to do your own condition inspection.
It doesn't matter what your building , whether it's a plane car motorcycle ,you will have to automatically double the cost of the total cost .builds are not cheap as most people would think.
About 1987, I had the opportunity to buy a Pacer (with current inspection, but tired engine), for $8,500. Fly it away!! Too much money for a high school teacher! Today, $20000 .... too much money for a retired high school teacher! :-(
@michaelsamson3276 I'm looking to go Experimental Exhibition. If I can't, I'll sell it and build a Bearhawk. It's a good airplane, but I want better STOL capabilities than it has stock.
I looked into that years ago and had the Blanton plans for the conversion. Local FISDO office was not too keen on the idea so I bought a Pacer and been adding all the good stuff over the years. Only way I would sell it is if I built a Bearhawk.
@scotthanson9302 I have heard they don't wanna do field approvals or allow certified aircraft to go Experimental if the mods the owners are looking to do have an STC or there is an option for an STC on a similar mod. Because there is a Bryant Producer STC, Super Pacer STC and others, they wanna see things like a completely different engine like automotive or something crazy, and plan to not only fly enough for proficiency, but show it off too.
Very desirable airplane. I never flew a Pacer but the one Tri-Pacer I flew was so slow it was painful. Cars on the highway below were going faster ("Great time builder!"). A cheap Tri-Pacer might make a good conversion to a tail dragger and wing and tail mod, although there are no longer any "cheap" aircraft.
To all who caught my error. I am old and misspoke, the plane is not certified, it is experimental amateur built.
Gorgeous thing you’ve built sir!
Thanks, I love flying her
Nice work that’s a beautiful plane.
My first 15 hours were in a Pacer, absolutely love this build.

Great meeting you guys!
Got a behind the scenes tour while Toby was getting that one together. Jealous was an understatement. He’s definitely fun talking short wings with.
Owned a ‘54 PA22/20 with a 160 hp climb prop. Also had VGs. Great value. Easy to fly. Thanks Trent for covering a great option to get into aviation.

That longer Pacer looks good!!
Nice work Toby!
Good morning from Minnesota! Great episode!
Love his build!
Cool Pacer and Cool Guy😎
Love the content, thank you!
Love "short wing" Pipers 👍
Nice job. The original Pacer seemed too short with two short of a wing.
Very nice rebuild Toby 😊
Rode in my neighbors piper pacer was the coolest little plane
More planes !!! I love it !!! Thanks !!!😊
Hey Trent I was wondering how I can find where someone can land a bush plane like is there a website or something else
wow, what a transformation
u guys are so lucky with the Experimental regulation in the US, we are so more restricted in the UK

I’m curious how the engine placement changed with the addition of 24” of fuselage out back and the new motor up front.
I used stock piper motor mounts without extending them. The extra weight of the 0360 Kept My center of gravity right at 25% of the wing chord.
I like this type of video. Thanks. 👍
Good show.
Nice vid Trent, keeping it honest off field. 😊

Sweet plane!
So, basically, he's converted it to be a four place Super Cub. Bravo. He should reprise the paint job. It looked great in the snow scene.
Are there vortex generators on top of his wings?
Yes, there are😊

123.45MHz?

So other than rudder authority, what do the extended wings do other than slow you down? What is the performance difference.

Need more video. the various option you could turn into a bush plane series
Great vid like usual!
But maybe keep the music volume a little lower.
