Hey, Trent. My granddaughter, Aliyah, is near the end of completing her "ground school" in Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada and then will be starting flying lessons. I shared this video with her - I'm sure she will enjoy it as much as I did. Thanks for this "year-end" treat.

Beginning about 14:07. Orland, CA holds a special place in the history of Wildland Firefighter tragedies and fire aviation. Orland was the home of the arsonist that set a number of wildland fires in the Mendocino National Forest in early July 1953. The set that would become history was named the Rattlesnake Fire. 14 Call When Needed (CWN) firefighters and one US Forest Service (USFS) firefighter would be overrun by the fire and perish.
This tragedy led the USFS to seriously explore thoughts and experiments in using aircraft for wildland fire suppression.
    The rest is history.

You guys are so lucky that you can go out and play like that at this time of year. Here in the UK we have storms, wind and rain. It's not even worth stepping outside the front door to do anything much. Thanks for the video, it was a pleasure to watch. PS Happy New Year

I'm amazed how far my Starlink modem sends out a wifi signal. One night while camping in the boonies of Arizona with buddies spread out over 100 yards of creek bed, my modem registered 13 different devices from our three trucks. Great video and day of flying Trent! Too bad for the damage to one of the planes. Thankful no one was injured. You mentioned Nervino as you were flying west. Is that also the BECKWOURTH-NERVINO AIRPORT? Have landed there many times in the Luscombe to visit one of my dad's long time friends, Herb and drive to Portola for lunch. Couldn't stay long so we could "beat the heat" on take-off heading back to Stead. 😆
I just drove through Orland this past September heading to RARA in Reno and visited a widow there who, with her husband, were dairy farmers for many years. My dad would occasionally land his T-Craft, back in the late 50's and early 60's, in the pasture behind their home outside of Orland to say hello. I helped on their dairy one summer, in 1966, and decided that I was not tough enough to be a dairyman.
    😄

Hi Trent. Happy New Year to you from the Victorian high country, Down-under. I love the way you guys fly the back country. Just a suggestion, seeing how you have your 3D printer, can you probably mount the StarLink further back behind you in your blind spot to free up the overhead vision. Could improve the safety factor when flying in the group situations. Keep up the great work, always enjoy your vids.

Thank you Trent for the awesome videos and for sharing your home life as well as the flying. I love the job you did on the hangar. I am a structural engineer and I like your style / approach - literally LoL. I am in the Harrison Mills area of BC, Canada. We have a nearby country club with a landing strip - perfect for STOL although many single engine planes use it. I’ve been watching for a couple years and I plan to go for my pilot license. One thing that is intriguing in our area and seemingly perfect for KitFox is gravel bar hopping in the Fraser River. Mike Patey flew over us on his way to Alaska in Draco. I wonder if we can persuade you to come check out our area, with your controls pointed “Great White North”. Thanks again, awesome vids.

Glad all is safe with your friend. This is by far my most favorite video you have put out. Lots of flying with good scenery which is what I love. What size of tires are the planes in this video? A guy in my hanger just bought a 2020 carbon cub with 35 inch mains and some big 8 or 10 inch tail tire. It seems like it is almost as big as my mains on my decathlon, which of course is not designed to do what you do with your plane. Look forward to more videos this coming year.

Why dont you mount that Starlink above the baggage hold? Might have to get creative with the 3D printer but it would get that thing clear out of your way. Tell your buddy not to be so hard on himself and as long as he learned from the incident and no one got hurt or the plane did not get dinged up to bad its all good. Cant tell you how many times I have done something stupid and my dad was always doing something stupid because he loved to show off when he should have been showing restraint!

Trent, why don't you just create a solid bar at the back side of the Starlink transmitter/receiver where the two brackets are flimsy? I can see while you are in flight that the transmitter vibrates a lot. It can run from left to right straight through and thus create a sturdy bar on which the transmitter can rest.Just a suggestion.

I’m glad your friend is ok. I understand why he didn’t want to share his experience however I wish he did for the learning aspect of it. I would like to know what went wrong, why, what the damage was and the process of determining that the airplane shouldn’t be flown after.
Obviously a ground loop but intentionally done to prevent a worse case or unintentional. As a student looking to get into back country flying It would be a good learning experience. Personally I would never criticize another pilot’s mistake because we are all subject to mistakes and I like to learn from any and all others mistakes to help make me a better pilot as well as know and understand the risks and what could happen. We don’t know what we don’t know.
If he ever changes his mind I’d love to know and understand what happened.
