I fell in love with Eddie Hodges, when I was 12 yrs old. That was in 1962. I heard that song on the radio, and rode my bike, up to the record shop, and bought that song, for .69 cents. I also remember seeing Eddie in a movie with Frank Sinatra. I was always a fan of Eddie's, even after the Beatles came along. There were some other songs, that Eddie recorded, but I did forget the titles. What a wonderful time in the 60's back then!
In Gothenburg, Sweden on the Oldsberg show in the early 1990's. My last live TV performance with a great band. That record was the first #1 song ever on Sweden's Top 100 records chart. Great people there! Thanks for posting this one. Eddie Hodges
Just watched Huckleberry Finn on the TV, and was thinking when I saw Eddie Hodges in the credits, "wasn't that the guys name who sang that song". I was just a kid last time I saw that movie, and used to dream about living the life of Huck on the big River. Must have been a lot of fun for you to do that movie. And everyone I knew back then could sing your song all the way through. Thanks for being a big part of my childhood memories. And yes, I too originally thought you were an African American girl, before I got an old copy of your single some time in the 90's. And now to explore some of your other songs.
This is from Swedish tv. The show was called "Oldsberg - för närvarande" and the host was Ingvar Oldsberg. The show aired from late 1980s to early or mid 1990s.
Happy Birthday, Eddie Hodges. I am nearly as old as Eddie, and Knock On Your Door was so infectious that I knew after hearing it in the radio of a parked car that I would always remember it. I still have that record.
I came here after seeing Eddie on The Dick Van Dyke Show. Eddie's character has a hopeless crush on Laura Petrie (Mary Tyler Moore - and every red-blooded male felt that way in real life). He even sings a brief song while playing guitar in the ep. So impressed by his realistic, relatable and sympathetic portrayal, I googled him. Knew nothing about him before and his LIVE performance with this EXCELLENT ensemble is first-rate! Such talent. Bravo from Pittsburgh, PA!!!
I remember when this came out Eddie. You had to have been about 14 and I was 11. I enjoy your version the most, even though I have the deepest respect for the Isley Brothers. I sometimes use your version when singing for the senior citizens homes I frequent. They're always rocking right along with me. Best of luck in the future.
Only just picked up on this. Great to see Eddie still singing this and obviously enjoying it so much. Great performance. One of the earliest singles I bought during my youth in Liverpool.
I recall viewing this performance on Swedish television when it took place. What's particular about is that as Mr Hodges sang his song, the microphone producing the sound to the television viewers did not work (but the studio audience could hear the song). The host, Mr Oldsberg, was notified of this after Mr Hodges had finished the song, so he was asked if he could do the song once more, thus making it possible also for the television viewers to hear the song. Mr Hodges said "sure" and sang the song once more, which impressed the host a lot. "The sign of a great artist", he said.
To Eddie (Samuel) Hodges----I just watched the UA-cam video of you on "What's My Line". What a great child performer you were!!! Thanks for all the joy you gave me in my youth.
I love this song. I heard it on the radio the other day. Eddie looked good back here in 2013. I also remember him from Summer Magic and his role as the delivery boy in the Elvis movie Live a Little Love a Little
Thanks to you, Bengt, and to dowopper51 and Capricosm. When this record was first played on the radio here, it was played also on R&B stations. They were surprised to find out that I was not a young, African-American girl. I took that as a great compliment. Numerous others also recorded this song after I did, but the Isley Bros. (Sp.!) were the first. God bless.
Love this song Eddie and you were only 14 when u recorded it. A massive hit in Australia and one of my all time favourites. Hope u are still in good shape mate..... all best from down-under
I have some great memories of this song ( and Bandit of My Dreams ). I loved Huckleberry Finn. The book and the movie. I wrote the great American fantasy "The River Girl" of a 15 year old girl riding down the Mississippi on a raft in the 1800 somethings... while she was listening to her transistor radio ( obviously a time travel fantasy haha! ).
Hey Eddie this is your cousin Alan Osborne. My mother was Carolyn Oliver daughter of James Harold Oliver. We used to have family reunions in Jackson Mississippi years ago and you would attend if you were available. I did get to spend some time with you in Harvey,Illinois at a cousins house and we had a blast just young adults hangin out. I haven't talked to him in years and the last I heard he was living in Biloxi,MS. I hope he sees this and I hear from him.
Stay great and fine, Eddie! Yes, back in the day when boys were boys and girls were girls, and there was no PC and no sexual harassment, and everyone knew how to handle themselves, especially the girls.
Adolescent j'avais ce 45 tours dont j,adorais la musicalité et le rythme. Ce n'est qu'avec l'arrivée d'internet que j'ai retrouver la musique, le titre et le nom du chanteur. Un souvenir magique.
Hi, I am from Ms to. I am about forty miles from Hattiesburg. I remember you from Macafrey's Show Time on wdam. Glad to know you are doing well. You are a credit to MS!
EXCELLENT FUN SONG AND RHYTHM !!! A VERY DETERMINED GUY ... INDEED !!! A COEUR VAILLANT, RIEN D'IMPOSSIBLE ! AT VALIANT HEART, NOTHING IMPOSSIBLE ! Prêt à réveiller et ameuter toute la ville ... pour gagner, coûte que coûte, le coeur de sa belle !!! Dec 15.
+damecouleur Now look for the same song by the same guy when he was YOUNGER !! Do you hear that the spirit is still strong but the flesh not so much !!
You were in a version of Huck Finn ...cannot name the year..it was THE best Huck Finn done by anyone..I have always wanted to see it again...why is it never shown?
Samuel Hodges I'm a huge music fan - wasn't born then, bit, everything from the early 60's - mid 90's, is in my area, especially the Gold Star Studios stuff, as well as Messers Phil Spector, and Jack Nietzsche's work (Mr. . Spector's an acquaintance of mine, as is the amazing Ms. Darlene Love, who you worked with on Seein' Is Believing' - I love that) - esp. her 'yeah, yeah, shouts' - 13 in a row!) I love your stuff, Mr. Hodges, because I get the feeling unlike a lot of the 'teen idols,' you REALLY liked GOOD music - I mean, not just to listen to, but, you didn't want to put out garbage, you wanted to put out stuff YOU would want to buy. Though I'm sure they'd say "Eddie, record this,' I think you had input, as well. I say this, because all your tracks have one thing in common: good hooks, and catchy, and that's not a fluke. I want to know what it was like working with Jack Nietzsche, and what's your favorite track? P.S>, A belated happy birthday.
U.N. Owen I agree about the music. Most artists have some good songs and some garbage. I’ve heard at least most of his songs. All but one were really good - and the one wasn’t that bad really. 📻🙂
I hope this reaches you also, Eddie or Samuel Hodges - Do you have lyrics and musical arrangement for a mixed quire for this song? I sing in a very good quire and we might like to take it up and sing for you, together with some other of our great stuff. At any time you find interesting. If it´s a good idea, answer to bengtigoteborg@hotmail.com
Still a very talented performer. To think this song went to #1 back in the summer of 1961.

I remember this performance when it was aired in the 90's. I really got hooked on this song and the original recording!

A good comparison with the original single. Nice to see a comment from Eddie himself.

Superb!
I loved this in the '60s and it's still a great song. Hard to believe that Eddie Hodges got this old as the song seems timeless.

Not bad. Even though it’s a more Country style, Eddie still carries the song very well.

He was a seemingly prepubescent kid when he first sang this song. His voice held out pretty well!
