Yes, there musta been a backlog of people wanting to be on this show, my only gripe is the contestants that lost didn't get the opportunity to play again
You have to realize that game show hosts often met the contestants before the show, and that the mini bio on camera was mostly for the benefit of the audience. So he may have already known beforehand she was married. On the other hand, some hosts either didn't know or pretended ignorance of their contestants. Groucho Marx was notorious for making fun of contestants on You Bet Your Life, partly to get laughs at their expense....and partly, I think, because he was bored and it amused him to make other people look stupid. He acted like he never met contestants beforehand, and probably didn't meet them.
Yes he asked about her husband, but to be fair, the question he asked the man was "are you married?" But yeah, Allen already knows the answers to these questions and is just working off the information he's been given. Of course it sounds sexist to our ears but that's just because we define ourselves and our lives differently today.
Mr. Ludden would generally introduce female contestants by saying, "You're married. What does your husband do?" I hope (perhaps in vain) that Mr. Ludden was cued to say something else if the contestant had a career of her own.
There seems to be a wide disparity between the talent of the (non-celebrity) players. Some so good and sophisticated and others play like they can barely put two words together. I don't mean to be harsh. I LOVE the game even when the players are not so good. It is just an observation.
To everyone who doesn't like it when Allen Ludden asked the woman contestant what her husband did for a living: don't be so naive!! The nuclear families were the norm back then. The husband worked and the wife stayed home and took care of her family. That's the way that it's suppose to be.
@@lovesmesomelilacs-ke5rzYou sure are ignorant about what the word "norm" means. It doesn't mean everyone. There were some families where both the husband and wife worked, but that was definitely extremely rare.
@@lovesmesomelilacs-ke5rz I'm not rude. I'm stating facts. You must be one of those extremely selfish feminists who ruined it for feminine women like me.
You can sometimes tell when they get the answer right before they do because of the print-through in the audio. You can hear a faint, "Yeah!" or excited shout. Example @ 3:40.
Times have sure changed. Allen asks the men their occupation and the women how many children they have. Allen had a working wife, but the stay at home mom was the norm. Women were supposed to take care of the home while the man made the money.
I ‘do’ appreciate that words are different now compared to back when this was made... but, gahAHHHHleeeee... that first round was inSANe! Where’d THOSE clues come from!!?! KaZOIKS!!!!!!!!

I think you're right. Dealing with Desi's infidelities and drinking would have made her tough, plus when she was running the studio in the early 60s, that certainly had its effect. She said once all she wanted to do was acting but she suddenly found herself being an executive, too. I've heard stories about how bossy she could be even with big-name stars, such as Jack Benny, Richard Burton. Certainly different from the lovable Lucy Ricardo, but she did give us so much pleasure and laughter, even though her later shows were not very good.
@@saltychips4866 Poor response, the gentleman had a terrific idea. The Ricardos versus the Mertzes would have been interesting, but I don't see William Frawley being that willing to play word games. Diss somebody for using less than perfect English/grammar? Do you feel better now?

When interviewing a female contestant Luden's only question for the female was "what does your husband do for a living?" That pretty much sums up the value of women at that time.
I'm getting sick and tired of people downgrading what Allen Ludden did. All of you obviously never read God's Holy Word the Bible. The real Christian home has the husband working and the wife staying home and taking care of her family. It wasn't the least bit insulting for Allen Ludden to ask the female contestants what their husbands did for a living.

No that’s not quite what he said. He said that the woman Christina described was not the same as the woman he had been married to. Joan adopted Christina years after she divorced Fairbanks who was remarried to another woman and not in the Crawford home. Other stars who knew Joan after the adoption stated that they had witnessed her abusive behavior. Lana Turner stated after Joan’s death that everyone in Hollywood knew but covered it up because Hollywood protected its own. Basically no one will ever know the truth about what went on in Joan’s life. I suspect the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Allen knew in advance if female contestants worked or not. So he'd say "Are you a working girl?" or ask about family & hobbies.
😀👏I'm enjoying it too!! ♥️
Douglas Fairbanks should have said "birthday" for "happy."
Douglas Fairbanks was married to Joan Crawford when he was very young.
Love how he asked the man about himself and the lady about her husband. 😏
Definitely a sign of the times.
Yes he asked about her husband, but to be fair, the question he asked the man was "are you married?"
But yeah, Allen already knows the answers to these questions and is just working off the information he's been given.
Of course it sounds sexist to our ears but that's just because we define ourselves and our lives differently today.
@@todddepue681 Yes, we were barely out of the days of a married woman being referred to by her husband’s name. Mrs. John Doe, rather than Jane Doe.
Mr. Ludden would generally introduce female contestants by saying, "You're married. What does your husband do?" I hope (perhaps in vain) that Mr. Ludden was cued to say something else if the contestant had a career of her own.
Lucy & Vivian as partners.
on a later episode they were
I can see Lucy saying "Yo, Viv, babe"! Just like in "Pretty Woman"...lolz! 😁
There seems to be a wide disparity between the talent of the (non-celebrity) players. Some so good and sophisticated and others play like they can barely put two words together.
I don't mean to be harsh. I LOVE the game even when the players are not so good. It is just an observation.
Such a fun game -- everyone is happy -- just two weeks before the Kennedy Assassination.
What an innocent time it all was.
Vivian had beautiful blonde hair.
She dyed her hair. 🙄
It was a beautiful dye job.
@@diedonner299 she was definitely not a natural blonde. 🤯
To everyone who doesn't like it when Allen Ludden asked the woman contestant what her husband did for a living: don't be so naive!! The nuclear families were the norm back then. The husband worked and the wife stayed home and took care of her family. That's the way that it's suppose to be.
Not in every family.
@@lovesmesomelilacs-ke5rzYou sure are ignorant about what the word "norm" means. It doesn't mean everyone. There were some families where both the husband and wife worked, but that was definitely extremely rare.
@@lynettepalecek3141 and you sure are rude
It's the "that's the way that it's suppose[d] to be" that's the offensive part of your statement.
@@lovesmesomelilacs-ke5rz I'm not rude. I'm stating facts. You must be one of those extremely selfish feminists who ruined it for feminine women like me.
My niece Cami is the sweetest and most beautiful young woman I know!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You can sometimes tell when they get the answer right before they do because of the print-through in the audio. You can hear a faint, "Yeah!" or excited shout. Example @ 3:40.
If you look at the date, in a few weeks, life would change in America.
What fun!
24:32 if you look at the p then go diagonally to the left, is
that betty?
Times have sure changed. Allen asks the men their occupation and the women how many children they have. Allen had a working wife, but the stay at home mom was the norm. Women were supposed to take care of the home while the man made the money.
I wish could have a modern version, however Ppl these days are as literate.
Unfortunately, people these days are not as literate...
Left with $50 😳
What happened to America now?
Trash! 😀
Dang "chin" was a rough start!
I ‘do’ appreciate that words are different now compared to back when this was made... but, gahAHHHHleeeee... that first round was inSANe! Where’d THOSE clues come from!!?! KaZOIKS!!!!!!!!
Don't forget them.
Vivian seemed much more pleasant then Lucy.
Exactly, I loved Lucy but every time I see her on these shows she always looks angry and miserable, EXCEPT when her kids were on.
She was,, Lucy could be a Bitch. She had a mouth like a Truck Driver.
I've just watched a clip of Carol Burnett talking about working with Lucy. She said after Desi and Lucy divorced, she had to do so much more about running things in the company, and that made her more aggressive.
@@sashineb.2114 Many had issues with working with Lucy,, Prior to any engagements with anything with Carol Burnett. Lucy was a tough Broad. At any rate,, May she RIP. There is good in all. I think??? I forgot it is now 2019,,,, LOL !!!
Lots of new partners.
Should of made an episode with the cast of I love lucy, the Ricardo vs the mertz
Mr. Sir
How do you "of"?
@@saltychips4866
Poor response, the gentleman had a terrific idea. I watched Celebrity Password episodes last night, if you haven't seen them they featured 4 celebrities playing in pairs...not necessarily husbands and wives, just friends.
The Ricardos versus the Mertzes would have been interesting, but I don't see William Frawley being that willing to play word games.
Diss somebody for using less than perfect English/grammar? Do you feel better now?
RICKY AND LUCY NOT GETTING ALONG. LATER Desi Jr, Lucie Lucy and Gary Moore played.
Funny. Uh, I Love Lucy.
Vivian Vance had a kind of spacey look, but she was very intelligent.
These early shows the players just don’t really understand the concept or strategies of the game that emerged over time, like using a rhyming word as a clue.
However they did know how to act like a Lady and a Gentleman,,, not as today's Screwballs!! These people were Class Acts. Would rather see this any day!

Some folks play differently than others, try word association with your friends, different folks will give different responses to the same words.
When interviewing a female contestant Luden's only question for the female was "what does your husband do for a living?" That pretty much sums up the value of women at that time.
Yes, I noticed that too,,,,,,,
Well sometimes he asks them if they are a working girl... 😬
Yes. It was interesting to see that changing toward the later part of the show.
@@lynettepalecek3141 you're right. We should definitely be more accepting and open minded about how people define the ideal family. 🙂
Mexican border didn't they have that back then ?😳🤣
Douglas Fairbanks Jr. does look better without the mustache.
BEET!
Didn't he marry Betty white?
?
every time he asks a woman what 'her husband does', I want to spit nails!
If you noticed, if a woman did have outside employment, Mr. Ludden DID ask what her job was.
@@saltychips4866
You don't suppose he was introduced to the contestants before the show? Or maybe noticed her wedding band? Even with the small screen of my tablet, I can see that the lady is wearing a ring on her left hand before she starts talking.
I love it when he says, "Are you a working girl"...!!!
Old Dougie there tried to pull a fast one on the word chin he put his index finger pointing from his chin directly up to his nose and the rest of his fingers supporting his chin. Even Dougie wasn't above a little hanky-panky.
Bethesda, Maryland, where he will be flown to in just fifteen more days...
Allen taking an hour to realize Dougs mustache was gone is worse than George Costanza taking an hour to make a candy line -up
"PASS..." (!)
Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Claimed that Christina Crawford's accusations about his first wife Joan Crawford's were false!

"me... Vangogh"
@Christopher Bingham Surnames are considered one word. Also, what Vivian said was "beguine." Mr Ludden pointed out that she was trying to get her partner to think of "Begin the Beguine."
Haha. Hello Barbara, what does your husband do? Lol
So? The nuclear families were the norm back then. The husband worked and the wife stayed home and took care of her family.
Woman need to work and always be in the workplace. That's how it always should be. Men always had to much of the burden back then, that's why they were on the sauce alot.
