In the early 70s, I watched I Love Lucy reruns in the afternoons after my parents' divorce. Thrown into a new school, a not unfamiliar situation for many kids of the time, I found comfort in these reruns. These shows had a huge influence on my sense of humor. I remember watching I love lucy with my mom in the mid-50’s after my siblings were off to school. It would make my mom laugh so constantly and hilariously at times that I would laugh too- not really knowing what was so funny! Here I am-70 years of age- and still watching I love lucy, not just in memory of my mom but because I grew up loving this crazy red head that made us all laugh! Since I have so many favorite episodes it’s so hard to pick just one but I’ll go ahead and pick one of my many favorites - the Europe trip where Lucy’s skirt gets caught on a bike, misses her boat and has to take a helicopter-😱🤪😩 !! can’t wait to read what other viewers have to say about this iconic crazy television show!!
For the character she played and the character for Fred I always thought Fraley was too old….however I didn’t like how dumpy and poor that the Mertz’s were made to be….Vivian overcame or coped with her childhood upbringing.
I have always heard about Lucille and how treated Vivian. I heard about everything . Especially that Vivian and Lucy were Not Close at all. Lucille Ball was known as a B____ch!! I am not making this up!!!!
I never missed an episode of "I Love Lucy". I can still laugh at the shows today, even though I've seen them all a dozen times. My favorite show was the wine making episode, with Lucy stomping on the grapes.
Vivian was the perfect actress to play opposite Lucille Ball. She was as funny as Lucy. One of my favorite episodes was when Lucy bought a wig and tried to disguise herself to see if Ricky flirted with her. Then Lucy had an idea to meet with Ricky and continue with the charade. Ricky said he was bringing his friend with him to the restaurant and they knew it was Fred so Ethel decided to contact her friend to get a costume to wear and the only one her friend had was a Geisha, Eskimo, Indian costume.
I Love Lucy 1952 - 1955 only not thereafter was one of the greatest programs of all times!!!!! I've seen all the episode re-runs since I was a pre-teen in 1963 at least 2500 times on t.v.!!!!!! My favorite episode is Ricky asks for a raise where the gang(Ethel, Lucy, Fred dress up in various hilarious costumes as guests at the Copa Cabana club). Also Lucy is Ricky's agent in Hollywood, Too Many Crooks, Lucy demands a dress in Paris and goes on a phony hunger strike!!!!!! I can never get enough of this program except for a few very bad episodes!!!
I believe you missed something about Ball and Vance's working relationship. From the start; Lucy that Vivian Vance was too young to play the part. It was Desi and the other producer who helped to convince Ball. Some of the other reasons was hair color and Vance's size. Ball didn't want Vance to overshadow her, but Vance helped to convince Ball by changing her hair color, and telling Ball she would look a lot bigger on TV. It was all this; plus Vance's showbiz professionalism, that convinced Ball to allow her to take the role in the first place. It's also very well known; that Vance said out loud, that Frawley was too old, saying she didn't like working with "That Old Man'. Frawley overheard this, and the feud began.
Again another misunderstanding about Vance looking older and dowdier than Lucy was off - her character on I Love Lucy was being the wife of William Frawley - 22 years her senior. They were supposed to be lower income and a generation older than the Ricardos - if Vance dressed equally to Ball and acted as if she was the same age (she was only 2 years older) it would have thrown the dynamic off. I consider the two couples:The Fabulous Four making I Love Lucy a super hit from 1951 to date.
I completely understand Vivian's response to an abusive father for I had an insane mother and though I have had close women friends my romantic relationships have been a disaster. My favorite I Love Lucy is the one where Lucy is peddling the nutritional supplement with alcohol in it. One of the best bits ever on TV; right up there with Who is On First with Abbot and Costello.
Ricky put Lucy on an allowance. To cut back on expenses, she decided she would do her own hair-perms and make her own clothes. When she cut out the dress pattern on the floor, she cut the carpet as well. And her hair-perm looked like Little Orphan Annie. Lucy was/is so funny!
My grandmother and I used to watch I Love Lucy on Nick at Night when they would play 6 episodes back to back on Lucy Tuesdays.I love the show and even got the DVD sets when they came out. It's so hard to pick one episode as a favorite, but Lucy does a commercial, Deep Sea Fishing, and the whole arc with John Wayne's footprints are some of my faves.
My favorite I love Lucy is the episode where Harpo Marx comes to their California hotel room. His harp playing is magnificent, and the mirror bit is hilarious, and priceless. Second favorite is the candy shop.
My favorite episode was when Lucy was the vitametavegamine girl it so unrealistic but still so funny because in real life they wouldn't use the actual thing with alcohol and as a result of its alcoholic contents get drunk from having to do so many takes.
I've just watched The Lucy Show this past weekend, and my favorite show was with Lucy and Vivian and the kids at camp, losing their way back to camp but at the end, meeting up with 2 bears a tamed bear and a untamed bear. 😂😂 I love them all but this was my favorite show.
I love the episode where Lucy dances with Van Johnson. To me that episode represents her wish to finally be in a show. Not one of Ricky's nightclub acts, but a show non the less. On a side note, I always loved Ethel's dresses when they had to get dressed up. She carried herself so beautifully.
Two corrections: While preparing for the filming of each episode was difficult because Lucy demanded perfection (Because she expected it of herself, as well) but the overall shooting schedule was not hectic or overly stressful. They performed the taped episode on Thursday, which meant that they had a three day weekend each week. Second, Frawley and Vance did not BOTH reject the idea of a Fred and Ethel spin-off. Frawley was gung ho for the idea, but Vance flat out rejected it, because she did not want to work with him again. This further angered Frawley, and put an additional in the nail on the coffin that was their personal relationship

The episode where Ethel and Lucy catch a ride to Florida and change the flat tire on the car. Then they all think they are riding with hatchet murderer Evelyn Holmby!😂

I didn't know much about Vivian. I think her and Lucy were great together. I loved the show, but since it's been such a long time ago, I can't remember my favorite episodes.
You forgot to mention that Vivian Vance & Lucille Ball were best friends in real life. In fact, Lucille Ball & Vivian Vance were together for a while just prior to & at the time of Ms. Vance's death. I believe Ms. Vance died from cancer. I know this because once when Ms. Ball was a guest on the "Tonight Show" ( after the death of Vivian Vance), Ms. Ball herself stated she stayed with her "dear friend", Vivian Vance for a while just before Ms. Vance died. Thank you.
@@FactsVerse Id like to hear about Jack Lord. A friend of mine claimed he frequented his convenience store in Hawaii a few times a week and was usually in the company of young Philippine men
Some interesting facts and theories, for sure. Wondering if the inner turmoil Vance seemed to continuously face helped shorten her life, because of the mind-body connection. After Vance left the Lucy Show, I think that began to spell the long decline in the quality of Lucy's remaining tv seasons, although bringing Lucie to the new Here's Lucy helped bump it up for a while.BTW, my favorite episode of ILL, which I recently found on Paramount+, is The Mr. and Mrs. Breakfast TV show. Among its gems is Vance and Frawley singing the Phipps Department store jingle....twice! :-D
I feel like the time period was the period where women were married to older men. So I’m not sure why Fred would be worried about the age, however, I think the issue was not only his alcoholism, but that he didn’t find Vivian to be as attractive. As an adult watching I Love Lucy, which I still love to this day, I feel like Vivian should have shined way better, she was actually in my opinion just as beautiful, if not more beautiful than Lucy. And I am not surprised that she had a therapist, because they were so negative they always talked about her weight and just had her in a negative light, which is also a testament to Hollywood in that time period, because even Bea Arthur (Dorothy) (golden girls) has similar experiences as Vivian, she came to a point where she got fed up with being portrayed as less feminine and manly, and in a negative light, I’m glad that both the women were able to stand up for themselves and demand their respect that they both deserved, I wish that we would have seen more of Vivian’s work as well as B Arthur’s work before they passed, but I am grateful to see what I was able to see
I don't really have a favorite I Love Lucy episode but one of my favorites is The Operetta when Lucy is the treasurer of the womans club and she has to put a play together but had already spent the money in the treasury.
I think my fvorite moment of Vivian Vance was where the ladies allowances were discussed, and Lucy is very sad when Ricky gives her only a hundred dollars. however Vivian Vance killed me with her remark, "you're lucky Lucy, that's all Fred has spent on our whole marriage!" I laughed so hard I nearly pee'd myself. my other favorite episeode is of coarse the all time chocolate factory scene.
I never saw a tremendous contrast between the Ethel Mertz character and Vivian Bagley other than her dressing better and being allowed to be her age. Other than that, her chemistry and delivery with Lucille Ball was essentially the same. I did read that Vivian complained that much of her dialogue on I LOVE LUCY sounded a bit "butch," which may have been why she asked to have Vivian Bagley seem more "feminine."
Just my opinion of course, but I felt Vivian contributed a lot during the Lucy Show. The later seasons opening credits had a like 5 hours of just Lucy in different dress and then 3 seconds of Vivian. I can imagine working with someone like Lucy who was "all her all the time." I love them both, though.
Favorite was all 4 driving to Calif, got stuck in a horrendous motel & every time the train near the motel went by, all the furniture moved. And poor Ethel was brushing her teeth while a train went by & came out with toothpaste all over her face!
Also Frawley according to Desi was never late for work and did everything he was supposed to do.That was a promise he made to Desi when he was hired. This article got a long wrong. The Lucy fans on here know the real truth.
One of my favorite episodes of I love Lucy was Ethel and Lucy sitting beside William Holden in a restaurant in Hollywood. Lucy was the consummate slapstick artist. The magic was lost in The Lucy Show and Here's Lucy in my opinion. I feel she aged out in the type of humor that worked so well in I love Lucy.
I think her being in the show helped make it what it was. All the actors in the show made it what it was.she was in another show with Lucy. I forget the name?
@@barbarafox437 i think there was two more shows after that. The one where Lucy was a secretary for Mr. Mooney. I think there was one more show she was in white her kids. I think people got a bit tired by then. You can only rehash old how’s.
I appreciated this video but as someone who has read practically every book about "I Love Lucy" I feel some clarifications are necessary. First, Lucille Ball strongly opposed Vivian Vance as Ethel Mertz, but Desi Arnaz firmly requested that Lucy give her a chance. Lucy gradually accepted her as Vivian proved her talent. With regard to Vivian Vance and her costar William Frawley, it was Vivian who initiated the bad relationship when Bill Frawley overheard her saying that no one would believe that she was married to that "old coot". Frawley replied with words that I shall not mention here! However, when the Fred and Ethel Mertz spinoff series was proposed, Frawley agreed because he would have received a lot of money. It was Vivian who vehemently opposed the idea and refused to participate. The two television icons never spoke to each other again.
From the episodes I've seen on re-runs and streaming platforms, I thought VF was a great actress. I liked her more than LB. Also liked the actor that played Fred Mertz more than Desi Arnaz, although DA was a very talented band leader. I know LB is considered a comedic genius as mentioned in this video. I did love LG's facial expressions and reactions. I remember the candy episode. Did not know about VF's marriages. Sad. Glad her last marriage was a happy one.
From everything I read about Lucy, she must have had some kind of problem with her looks. She insisted that Vivian not diet, wear frumpy clothes so she didn’t outshine Lucy. Think back of all the times they had to dress incognito to surprise the fellows! Remember how Vivian always had the worst outfits and Lucy had the glamorous clothes!!! I really don’t have a favorite show, they were all funny, until they moved to the suburbs and you could see the tension between her and Desi. Sorry if I hurt some feelings out there but, I call it as I see it. No badgering please!!!
The concept that Vivian Vance needed to be in therapy every morning in order to perform with Lucille Ball was not correct. At this time she was married to a man who was abusive and caused her to be depressed. Vance had a history emotional distress and had been hospitalized early in her life. Also, she had four husbands, the last marriage being the best, but this husband was a homosexual.
I got the impression that Lucy did not really like VV and insisted she be overweight for her role in an effort to make Lucy look better. Vivian could really sing well. Of course, my favorite episode was them working on that candy line. One beef about Desi-I think he was responsible for those irritating and insulting laugh tracks.
@@FactsVerse If there is one video subject that is sure to please everyone, it's one about Marilyn. Maybe get into the rivalry between her and Jayne. I admire Jayne for her very high IQ.
I recently watched a roast for Lucille Ball. She wasn’t well liked. Gale Gordon, her costar on the Lucy show, said that Vivian was a better actress. He said little else. Vivian herself said very little to Lucy. No love lost there. I had a friend that worked for American Airlines. Lucille was banned from flying with them. Got too buzzed and combative onboard. No thanks Red. Fly other unfriendly skies.
Yes, yes to your trite questions about Vivian Vance, but a big NO to the part that you have wrong. Lucille did not favor Vivian in the role of Ethel Mertz. She had initially desired the role to go to actress and friend Barbara Pepper but CBS rejected that suggestion in that Barbara was known to cause filming delays due to her drinking at the time.. Lucy secondarily desired actress Bea Bernadette to play the role. But Bea's contract to play Blanche opposite Gracie Allen on the Burns and Allen Show was Ironclad. I believe it was Jess Oppenheimer who pointed out Vivian Vance to Desi Arnaz while she was starring in an Off-Broadway production at the time. The two gentlemen journeyed out of New York City to see her perform and were so taken with her performance that Desi immediately offered her a contract. While Lucille had to approve and first right of refusal if the person hired to play Ethel were not to her liking. Desi convinced Vivian that would not be a problem. He would be able to convince Lucille that Vance was the perfect person. So it was he not Lucille who originally believed Vivian would be perfection in the role. However, after Lucille saw Vivian perform it was a rather easy task to convince her she was indeed the right person. But those are the ACTUAL facts.

Phipps is a great big bunch of gyps!
My favorite show.
My favorite was season 4 episode was called first stop so funny.😊
Vivian Vance is a beautiful name.
And I am not surprised that she had a therapist, because they were so negative they always talked about her weight and just had her in a negative light, which is also a testament to Hollywood in that time period, because even Bea Arthur (Dorothy) (golden girls) has similar experiences as Vivian, she came to a point where she got fed up with being portrayed as less feminine and manly, and in a negative light, I’m glad that both the women were able to stand up for themselves and demand their respect that they both deserved, I wish that we would have seen more of Vivian’s work as well as B Arthur’s work before they passed, but I am grateful to see what I was able to see
I remember I Love Lucy favorite episode is when Lucy went to the Brown Derby restaurant or an Ethel call when she saw William Holden I was so funny
I don't really have a favorite I Love Lucy episode but one of my favorites is The Operetta when Lucy is the treasurer of the womans club and she has to put a play together but had already spent the money in the treasury.
"The Pleasant Peasant."
Bring back the I love Lucy Show to Hallmark Chanel !
One stands out was the cigar episode i love that one
Just my opinion of course, but I felt Vivian contributed a lot during the Lucy Show.
The later seasons opening credits had a like 5 hours of just Lucy in different dress and then 3 seconds of Vivian.
I can imagine working with someone like Lucy who was "all her all the time."
I love them both, though.
I love all I Love Lucy shows, but there are several that are just hilarious. One of them is when the husbands think Lucy is a cleptomaniac.
Why can't comedy be without drama?
Comedy with a story behind it. Hasn't changed to this day
human nature
One of my favorite episodes of I love Lucy was Ethel and Lucy sitting beside William Holden in a restaurant in Hollywood. Lucy was the consummate slapstick artist. The magic was lost in The Lucy Show and Here's Lucy in my opinion. I feel she aged out in the type of humor that worked so well in I love Lucy.
I think her being in the show helped make it what it was. All the actors in the show made it what it was.she was in another show with Lucy. I forget the name?
We're happy to know that you're a fan of the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
Here’s Lucy.
@@barbarafox437 i think there was two more shows after that. The one where Lucy was a secretary for Mr. Mooney. I think there was one more show she was in white her kids. I think people got a bit tired by then. You can only rehash old how’s.
Vivian Vance rest in peace
I saw a tabloid telling of how Lucy and Vivian had a gay relationship under wraps so anything's possible beyond many expectations.
Very intriguing! Thank you so much for sharing this info. Be safe and have a great evening 💗💗
Mamie little baby loves Ethel Mertz Ethel Mertz mamie's little baby loves Ethel Mertz(not shorten' bread)!!!!!!

Vance was gorgeous and talented and her character had to be downplayed because of Lucy. Also, I never thought she was well paired with Frawley.
she was great as vivian bagley too.
So true! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
Ethel didn't have to worry she outshone Lucy!!!!!!
Fu stuff, thanks for sharing your thoughts. We love Vivian's acting too and overall personality. Which episode of the show appealed to you the most?
Yes, definitely
From everything I read about Lucy, she must have had some kind of problem with her looks. She insisted that Vivian not diet, wear frumpy clothes so she didn’t outshine Lucy. Think back of all the times they had to dress incognito to surprise the fellows! Remember how Vivian always had the worst outfits and Lucy had the glamorous clothes!!! I really don’t have a favorite show, they were all funny, until they moved to the suburbs and you could see the tension between her and Desi. Sorry if I hurt some feelings out there but, I call it as I see it. No badgering please!!!
i loved fred mertz and William frawley
Us too! Which episode of the show appealed to you the most?
Lucy s Italian movie
Thxs
I like when Fred says you probably be one of the bunch
Nothing new As an I Love Lucy nut there was nothing that I already knew. Vivian was an incredible talent and a consumat professional.
Use to like her better on the show, she was PRETTY
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and enjoy the rest of your evening!
Well there were rumors of Vance had to be more heavy and not too pretty over Lucy ,,,
She also told the writers in The Lucy Show not to name her character Ethel. She hated that name, called it unfeminine.
Also, Lucy was extremely supportive of Vivian emotionally.
But you are showing I Love Lucy footage, not the Lucy show.
Oh Ethyl!
Thanks for watching! We're glad to know that you love our video. What other types of video would you like to see on Facts Verse?
I got the impression that Lucy did not really like VV and insisted she be overweight for her role in an effort to make Lucy look better. Vivian could really sing well. Of course, my favorite episode was them working on that candy line. One beef about Desi-I think he was responsible for those irritating and insulting laugh tracks.
The candy line is one of the best episodes for me too, so funny! 🤣😂🤣😂👍
SO true! Thank you so much for sharing our thoughts and favorite episode. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
@@FactsVerse If there is one video subject that is sure to please everyone, it's one about Marilyn. Maybe get into the rivalry between her and Jayne. I admire Jayne for her very high IQ.
Lucy thought Vivian was too pretty for the part.
Umm...those weren't laugh tracks....the show was shot on film before a live audience.
I don’t have any favorite thing about I love Lucy…allihaveeverseen is rerun’s of there show.
Their not there
Yes, yes to your trite questions about Vivian Vance, but a big NO to the part that you have wrong.
