Actually it was not the first time Desi Jr. played password. Gary Morton, Lucille Ball, Lucy Arnaz, and Desi Arnaz Jr. were on when it was still black and white and Lucy and Desi Jr. were teens.
Barbara Mowrey Yeah, she was married to the original Password Host, Allen Ludden. This episode is in 1981, which is the same year Allen died. Even though he didn’t pass yet, he was in the hospital suffering from cancer, and you can even see that Betty is a little sad because she’s playing Password without her husband.
This show was aired on 2 March 1981, Allen Ludden was still alive, but very sick with stomach cancer. He died on June 9th 1981. There is a big difference between Betty White of 1980 and 1981, she looked tired and older, funny how much a difference of 6 months or a year can make, probably taking care of Ludden was bearing her down. Desi Arnaz Jr. was 27 year old in this show.
Thanks for that information. I was sad to see that Allen Ludden was not the host, knowing he died that year. Yes, I agree that Betty looked a bit stressed.
"I love this lady on my left. I just thought I'd announce that to America." - Betty, referring to Lucy An amazing statement! Two American legends, playing Password Plus with each other.
Lucy and Betty were close friends. They and their husbands used to go out to dinner frequently. There are a lot of fake and shallow people in Hollywood and Lucy had a problem with that, but Betty was and is the real deal, so they got along perfectly.
Betty White's humor in all of these Classic game shows reminds me of my Grandma on my Mum's side. She had the sweetest demeanor, but she could really work a family reunion if she wanted too! I'd like to think her wit rubbed off on me a bit.
Allen was still alive at the time of this episode. I think by this point she knew he wouldn't be coming back, so her appearances on _Password Plus_ became more infrequent after Allen's death. She also appeared in 12 weeks of _Super Password_ with Bert Convy, including the final week where she destroyed the Ca$hword Toaster.
@@HardRockMiner This was from the week commencing 2nd March 1981, episodes 560-564. As I don't know the episode number I can't give more exact details than that.
She always seems to be in good spirits and is the sole person I've seen Lucy howl at, let alone have to repeat what Betty was naughtily whispering to her. Very nice to see them in their element. If anything I think Betty was cheering Lucy up. Amazing to watch!
I used to watch the original show as a very young child, and loved this and the super password versions as well. All the hosts and contestants seemed to be having the best time. I remember the sweater Betty is wearing....seems like someone made a remark about it on one game show she was on.
Don’t know if people know this, but Betty White was never really into children, but she loves animals. All her charities have to do with animals. I love that. God bless her. May she rest in peace and all the people here and may they rest in peace
Wonder when this was done. I'm thinking Allen was still alive and Tom was filling in in hopes Allen could return. Because Betty seems happy. Sometime before June 9 1981.
Well, again, the attitude of Desi, Jr. could very well have been the cause of it. Other than that she seemed to like playing this game according to other accounts, including past appearances on Password.
Mr. Desi Arnaz Jr. handsome face and hair style resembles to Mr. Michael Douglas on "The Streets of San Francisco"! I guess, girls, must gone WILD with Desi's dark hair!
That wasn't the first time for Lucy's son. He played with his mother, sister and Lucy's new 2nd husband. He was probably 10 years old and he smoked the other side as a kid.
The way Lucy moved and sat was because of physical pain I believe. I have pain and mobility issues, back, arthritis, and fibromyalgia, I move just like she did. 😒
It was the right key. It was the key that the singer sang in. It was Betty's key. A songcan be sung in any key the singer needs. ( love from a multi professional musician family )😊
Poor Desi tries to be funny, but really just comes across as a wise ass...kind of see why his career as an actor/personality never amounted to much. At least he never needed the money...
bloodgrss Just because your mother is Lucille Ball doesn't mean you're going to be as talented as her. I think it speaks more to the type of mother she was(or wasn't) to him. There are plenty of children that have famous parents that turn out to be less talented or not as good as their parent in their parent's chosen career.
They actually have cards with the first letter of all of the clues to the alphabetics and show them to the contestant receiving. This way the contestant, in this case Betty, can always see what letter they're currently on. Therefore she just needed her glasses to keep track of what letter she was on in alphabetics.
Since it’s all celebrities and they are among friends, it would have been funnier to give them drinks. Lucy seems a little bored 😂 at times. But Lucy was 70 here and Betty was a spry young chick of 59!!
My beef with Lucy is that she had a habit of voicing her motherly disappointment in Desi Jr. in public. I'm actually surprised that Desi, having grown up with his domineering mother mercilessly chiding him in front of strangers, hasn't yet died an early death brought on by nothing more than a lack of the will to breathe. There's A Merv Griffin episode that used to be available on UA-cam (and may still be) where Lucy, Gary and Lucie were just piling on Desi. All Desi could do was sink into the chair looking helpless and hopeless. Having successful parents can be a blessing. But having Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Sr. as my parents is something that I would never choose.
I have that Merv Griffin episode you're referring to. The "piling on" was nothing but harmless teasing like families do. He was laughing along with them, not the least bit bothered by it.
I wonder if this is before or after Allen Ludden passed away. He was married to Betty White. He was diagnosed with cancer in 1980 and died sometime in 81.
I love how Lucy seems to genuinely like and finds Betty White funny... imagine her as Dorothy on the Golden Girls lol
I know she has that raspy voice yet silliness and snarkiness, LOL!
They'd been good friends for years and years before this show was taped!

YES, they have great chemistry together!
Funny I always thought there was. I’ve seen them on this show and assumed they had worked together.
Can’t imagine. Very different genres and actresses. Lucy was more slapstick, old-school comedy. Betty was much more about wit and sharp dialogue.
Not necessarily
Love 'em both. We need more Betty and Lucy's today.

Betty was so good at this game!
Her husband, Allen Ludden, was the host of the original Password. He passed away before this version.
He died June 1981...I think he was still alive when this was filmed.
Desi looks more like his father here than at any other time I've seen him.
"Do you know that lady over there?"
"Yes, I made some of her pilots."
Do you know what Lucy is referring to? I do.
+norelco pc Desilu studios made some t.v. shows with Betty and it was also a play on her comment about airline pilots.
+TeeBee Overdahl It was mainly referring to test shows that Desilu made for Betty.

I agree 👍💯
Lucy gave that face to everyone
Lucy looks like she wanted to slap him.
And notice Lucy's posture during Alphabetics, she sits with such authority.

How annoying was Desi Jr. I had to click off the episode. He acted like he was 12 years old.
Love them both! Lucy and Betty White!!!
I LUV YOU LUCY AND I MISS YOU A LOT
Lucy's son is very annoying. He has the attitude and acts like a spoiled brat.
I was thinking the same thing!
Lucy gave zero fucks about this game.
She actually loved the game. She was just an intense player; was focused on the game, not on pretending to be her TV character.
✨I love how its 1981 and they still in the 70's. Lol😜✨
Rip Tom, Betty, and Lucy. I also miss Allen doing the Password Plus. Rip as well!!
Betty White still looks a little sad - especially doing Password with Allen gone.

Lucy shut Desi down during his long-winded bio of Richard Keith. I think she was annoyed... perhaps sensing he was drunk or medicated.

she does not seem to happy to be there at least starting at halfway through
Well, again, the attitude of Desi, Jr. could very well have been the cause of it. Other than that she seemed to like playing this game according to other accounts, including past appearances on Password.
He was behaving like a loudmouthed jerk. I imagine she was feeling kind of embarrassed.
