@@redfawn6229 nah it's not, he made a choice to keep his voice by taking vocal lessons and I don't think he regrets it. There can still be rasp in safe vocals it's called distortion for a reason. Almost anything that unsafe singers sing can be sung in a safe manner it just takes longer and more practice because ultimately unsafe singing is cutting corners for techniques that need to be fleshed out through safe singing. That's why a lot of unsafe singers lose range and their voices.
@@mikeandike2021 Yeah, I understand it may have took a toll on his voice. But there’s no denying the vocals were better back in the day. The power behind them was incredible. Of course nothing compared to Layne Staley but it was better imo.
You know what? I’ve watched this a few hundred times now, and I’ve finally concluded that James really didn’t sing all that badly. He’s of course no Layne Staley, but with that being said, he did have some great moments during this song, busting out that signature Hetfield growl a few times, which in my opinion added a great twist and depth to the song. Again, it wasn’t perfect, but I’ve finally concluded that he did a pretty decent job here-further props to James hyping up the crowd; “...It’s good to hear these guys again, ain’t it?”
He’s a solid front man, though extremely rough around the edges and not particularly a taste most prefer. However, as someone who has sung that song relentlessly, he was fantastic here. Not perfect, but solid beyond most expectations. AIC was doing well, but still rough around the edges as well. Funny note, the new singer of AIC is there chilling watching them perform. This was before he took over officially and jumped on that 2008 album.
Layne Staley was a real talent. He never struggled to sing even when he was very off, his voice was an instrument that was never failing. For sure once in a lifetime talent, his vocal range was unreachable. He will forever be missed. And James should have apologized for that stupid joke about a man who was struggling with an addiction that he even knew it would kill him soon.
James was pissed at Layne at that point in time. Layne apologized to all of Metallica after rehab, he regretted saying he would be fine for the summer tour. Metallica worked it out and found opening acts for the 94 summer tour. Not much money was lost when AIC pulled out.
I feel bad for Cantrell... Everytime he is playing he just can't forget it's not his brother's voice echoing out of the amplifiers, and will never be...
Nobody can sing this song better than Layne. The studio take of Would is possibly the best vocal performance in the genre. Untouchable soul in the 5 note single syllable words. James butchers it. Just embarrassing. And I love James. But this is like getting Maroon 5 to sing Stevie Wonder.
dude...there's no way he could have pulled off this song in 91, his range wasn't anywhere near what it's been post 2k, you're crazy, or you have memory problems...we are kinda getting older now, lol.
Fella Mabooshnik If James has a better vocal range now, why do they play in eb now? Just listen to Nothing Else Matters and tell me he doesn't have a good vocal range.
He would've done it easy in 91, maybe even better in 98-99. And honestly James sounded not so good between 04 and 09. But I think he did a pretty good job here, he did it his way.
James Hetfield Mocks Layne Staley Live Multiple Times For His Heroin Addiction and Not Staying On Tour With Them and Then is Forgiven By Alice In Chains Who Grants Him the Opportunity To Play/Sing With Them Live Years Later. That Is What Forgiveness Is All About! Good Job Hetfield for Attempting This Song. I Absolutely Adore Both of the Bands......
James and Lars also made terrible jokes about Kurt Cobain’s suicide too live on stage. Imagine if AIC or Nirvana members mocked Cliff’s death. They would be cancelled for life.
Well, gotta give Hetfield props for even having the balls to try and cover a Layne vocal, and it could've been a lot worse. I do like how you could tell he was going to end the song with a traditional Hetfield -YA sound but managed to hold back at the last second.
Anyone remember that one time Metallica made fun of layne during one of their old live shows by playing the beginning of man in the box and then started talking shit on layne??? I bet James totally regretted that after this

Pedro Dorantes You're probably not a drummer for asking .... Lars is just one of the most over-rated drummers, or he just took too much drugs or booz cause now he's terrible, can't even play a tight beat
Alice In Chains is one of the sickest and best bands in the world. Must’ve been an honor for Hetfield to perform with these guys. Singing the vocals of a singer who will never be matched. Alice, Layne, Jerry, Mike and Sean.. all top notch artists and talents.
Just discovered this today. After all the history from the '90s, it's good to see James and Alice in Chains performing together and seemingly so amicable. Alcohol is a hell of a thing, it'll make you do some really dumb stuff under its power. Hetfield getting sober has to have a lot to do with his new persona, and I'm sure that went a long way toward making this performance possible. He's certainly not Layne Staley, but no one is. He did his best, and for that I'm grateful, because this exists.
Sure...but same is from the opposite point of view. I mean Layne Staley is not James Hetfield as well. Try to imagine Layne properly singing songs by Metallica...I can't really, doesn't work. So different vocalists, both unique in their own ways.
LOL classic! James making fun of Layne due to AIC not touring because of rehab and someone chucks a shoe at James. I love both bands, but James earned and deserved that shoe!
Based on what I've heard posted on MetallicaTV channel, since 2012 forward he could have easily topped this performance - even in 2020. Everything between 2000-2011 was hit and miss.
Definitely. His presence, confidence and personality lift the band. Look how carefree Jerry is - he knows Hetfield is in complete control. His vocal may have been a little up & down - it's a tough song to sing but the man is frontman gold.
William just there, letting James have the moment to shine. Top class. William was the best singer they could have. Seen him live and he fits the band without any prejudice to Layne's legacy. AIC!🤘
I was there !! It was an awesome surprise, I am a huge Metallica fan. I remember it clearly. Metallica played the whole Master of Puppets album, I remember I went nuts when James said “ And for you, the whole album”
Considering the fact he insulted him for using heroin live, that's a huge tribute to Staley. He grew smarter through the years, realised he was not in a much better shape actually, and giving himself to therapy and rehab. That's the place he was in this performance, a place of compassion and forgiveness. But hey, Staley still laughing from the sky telling him: You are a great singer, James, but not when you tried this song. Only I doing justice to this song 😉
What people are failing to realize is that though both James and Layne are extremely talented, their voices are definitely unique. So of course James' vocals are not going to sound a little off on an Alice in Chains song. With that being said, Layne's voice would also sound a bit off on a Metallica song. However, both are very talented singers, so I am not taking anything away from both musicians. Rest in peace Layne.
Amen to that! Some good sense here, people. Too many people bashing the vocals and missing the point entirely...it's a tribute, just to agree to come up on stage and sing the song at all, whether good or bad. Hetfield showed up and performed. That means something to me anyway and he gets kudos for that
They are friends. Jerry and Sean have guested with Metallica before...James simply did the same for them, it's not uncommon among musicians. Whether or not he performed the song to a good enough standard is irrelevant, it's not to be taken seriously
@@redbloodedamericanmancould Layne play Creeping Death live at 200 bpm and sing at the same time? So, hope you understand that there are different types of talent

Which Layne and Jerry wrote about Andrew Wood, who died of an addiction, before Metallica decided to mock him for his. Wrong on so many levels.
Honestly, I genuinely think James did about as well as you could possibly expect here. Replicating such an irreplaceable voice is impossible. If you listen to this and expect to hear the second coming of Layne, you’re going to be disappointed. But for someone who typically sings in a much lower register, this was pretty damn impressive.
Whole lotta haters. Layne was one in a million. James did his best and boy did he do a fine tribute to one of the greats! Cant top it though, but never the less a great try! Love AIC and James Het.

It may be, but try singing it while playing in front of Jerry Cantrell and thousands of people you elitists
I'm no guitarist, but I'm pretty confident I can sing this this song better than James Hetfield. >_> This isn't exactly the hardest song in the world to sing. Honestly this is my favorite post-Layne version of the song. Hetfield brings his own vocal style to the song, and it actually works. Would is one of my top 5 songs ever, and I can't imagine anything topping Layne's world-ending performance of the final verse, but I like this version more than the one with Phil, the one with Opeth, and even the one with Corey Taylor, and he's my favorite frontman of all. :o
Steven Hernandez...ohh how stupid you really are...boy layne has different technique and hetfield has a different technique and both are from different genres...hetfield cannot be layne and neither layne can be hetfield if layne would be singing metallica he would be the one getting hate here...this does not means that he do not have talent...

I like this. Im a truck driver, not a musician. But it is funny how the other ppl saying this sucks are probably AMATEUR musos....... Jerry Cantrell accepts James onto his stage but you are better right?
He sounds awesome! I think he seems like hes not used to singing in a grunge style. Which makes sense. But I think with what time he probably had to practice this he did really awesome.
I think why some people say this sucked must be because of that time James made fun of Layne at their concert in 94'. They played one of their songs and he made fun of Layne for being an addict despite James being an alchohlic himself and it was really sad thing to see and probably every aic fan that saw it probably felt pretty bad.
From 3:08 on James does great with the chorus I feel like he just found his comfort zone at this point, the first two choruses he comes in way too hard with the "into the flood again.." bit. I think he sounds fine, he's just not Layne Staley, imagine Layne singing Disposable Heroes, it would be good but James is the ultimate vocalist for Metallic just like Layne is for Alice in Chains.
Oh, where do I begin here? For some reason, I can picture any of Bruce Dickinson, Ian Gillan, Ozzy Osbourne, Corey Taylor, Mike Patton, Robert Plant, or if you wanted to hear a woman sing it, Floor Jansen or Simone Simons doing lead vocals on this.
In my opinion Lars is a good drummer, he has his specific style of drumming just like anybody else. If you think otherwise then fuck you, this style did, does and will suit Metallica the best.
What baffles me the most of reading comments on youtube about bands, is the amount of people that have no success in the music business and probably in life crtizicing musicians like Hetfield or Lars or whatever. James made fun of Lyne back in the 90s because he was an alcoholic, he didnt realize back then it was serious shit. James battled alcohol addiction in 2001 and after that he changed his mind. this tribute is not about pitching the high notes or the melody perfectly is about paying homage to someone.
Dude James stopped mid tour last fucking year 2019 to go to rehab again. Besides the Layne stuff Metallica dogged on grunge said stupid shit about grunge. Not only made fun laynes drug addiction ok ready for this made a joke about Kurt Cobain on stage right after his suicide. He said what color where Kurt's eyes? Idk lars what color. Blue one blew this way and other blew that way. So where the passion comes from is. 1. Lost cliff rip brush with death. Didn't matter. Bullied drug addicts like themselves to dog on grunge cuz it was taking over. Then sued Napster pissing and moaning about all the money they losing. I didn't even touch Dave mustaine situation cuz did they kick him out for being drunk. Lars and Jimmy need to sit down and be fucking humble. They been sell out get quick cash make radio songs. They forgot why we loved them with cliff. They were metal until they spoke.ok enough said
Damn, seeing this REALLY shows how talented Layne was as a vocalist. James is not a bad singer, I could never say that. I'm a huge Metallica fan. but this just didn't work at all. After that video where James bluntly calls Layne out for his addiction to heroin live on stage, and he promptly got a shoe to the head, and whined about walking off stage, I'm surprised he would feel comfortable singing one of Layne's songs now. Though it was a long time ago, and the bands don't have any hard feelings toward each other these days, I can't help but feel like Layne is getting the last laugh after this performance. Layne might have been a junkie. But he was a junkie that could out sing most male vocalist in the industry any day of the week, sober or high as a kite (MTV Unplugged for example). Just sucks to think of all the music we could have if he was still around. There will never be another Layne that's for sure. When it comes to all the AiC songs written with Layne, no one else's voice will ever sound good singing those songs. Those belong to Layne (and Jerry). Layne was a class of his own. I just hope wherever he is, he's in peace.
Layne Staley was pretty much of a one-of-a-kind singer- it's almost comical that AIC got booed off the stage when they played Ozzfest in '91 because they were not the 'right' kind of metal band. Layne grew a lot as a songwriter and even though most of his songs concerned addiction they were soulful and well written. Layne Staley was a tremendous singer and the music world was worse off for losing him. Still, Hetfield does a pretty good job here and he's much better than most of the guest singers Jerry Cantrell used. It's especially good considering it's not his song and I don't think they had a lot of rehersals- very professional job.
Like we say here in Brazil, "who am I at the breadline" to say anything about James? He is a legend! I think he peformed very well for someone that is singing out of his vocal range and style.
2019-2020 onwards James Hetfield now would be the best version of himself to sing covers like these, his voice is much more rounded off now. only down side to that is the heavier power songs suffer a little - he struggles with the barking styles they did on st angers frantic ... but like good liqiour everything evolves over time
crazy thing, back when Lane was alive, James made fun of Lane and his antics, glad to see that beef long gone and respect restored. James did a good job!
+Rickey Ryan Jerry Cantrell did all but a few of the compositions for AiC, but Layne wrote a lot of the lyrics. About half the lyrics on Facelift, again about half on Dirt, most of Jar Of Flies, and all but 2 or 3 songs on the self titled... Then let's not forget Layne was the driving force behind that incredible Mad Season album... To say he was "Just a singer" is massively disrespectful.
How cold they let him sing Layne's vocals??? Such a slap in the face to his memory. Metallica and James openly mocked Layne's addiction in front of thousands of people. It didn't seem like it got any better since Layne almost refused to play Unplugged when he saw Metallica in the front row. Perhaps that's why Layne stopped having any contact with them in the later years. But to let someone sing his vocals, that you know he openly disliked, seems like a real dick move to me. Especially when this song is about Andrew Wood who died of a fucking overdose before they mocked Layne for his addiction.

Come on, that's not true. He's played with Dave Lombardo.
I feel like this drummer was kinda dragging to be honest.
I think James has done an amazing job! Switching between his growly vocals to high pitched vocals. It was great for me! :)
Ausland too bad james sucks after 1993
@@Exotic_Tofu after 1999*
Props to James for being able to sing the higher parts of the song, even when he was just starting to get vocal training
Vocal training is what went wrong. Don’t get me wrong, Metallica is still good, the vocals just aren’t as gravely.
Of course nothing compared to Layne Staley but it was better imo.
nice pfp
This was before he took over officially and jumped on that 2008 album.
he did AMAZING. slightly more growly in the metallica fashion but he didn't do any discredit to AiC or Layne.
"If I would could yooouuuuooooaaahhh!"
That's so James Hetfield! 😂
Yeah what a fucking clown! And he did it twice...
IMO the band should have never played Would with this asshole, at least in justice for Layne
@@alvarobarrosso4169 besides, he sucks singing this song.
What did James say? I'm totally lost to this thing.
Fantastic effort from James, really is. A for effort. Lot of heart. Gotta say the drummer is the unsung hero, flawless.
I feel bad for Cantrell... Everytime he is playing he just can't forget it's not his brother's voice echoing out of the amplifiers, and will never be...
.... only layne
the only one he is
Nobody can sing this song better than Layne. The studio take of Would is possibly the best vocal performance in the genre. Untouchable soul in the 5 note single syllable words. James butchers it. Just embarrassing. And I love James. But this is like getting Maroon 5 to sing Stevie Wonder.
lol i so agree..
:( ya, neither can we
If it were James in 1991, he would've killed it, he did alright here though.
He did an admiral job
dude...there's no way he could have pulled off this song in 91, his range wasn't anywhere near what it's been post 2k, you're crazy, or you have memory problems...we are kinda getting older now, lol.
But I think he did a pretty good job here, he did it his way.
dude he killed it here.
I thought he would suck but he did it great with a lot of heart. Good
Never underate Metallica
He did great, just that Stanley had a very unique voice but James did great despite the hate he got for it.
It's James, he's always great.
@@coachjah4439 Hard to underrate them when they're one of the most overrated bands of all damn time.
Good to see i'm not the only one who took note of this.
James had his own struggles with the bottle.
0:39 James doing his best Canadian accent
Anyone remember that one time Metallica made fun of layne during one of their old live shows by playing the beginning of man in the box and then started talking shit on layne???
I bet James totally regretted that after this

They couldn’t have picked a better frontman to sing with them than James Hetfield!!! Thank you so much for posting this video!! 🤘

James reminds you how powerful Layne's singing was
Alice In Chains is one of the sickest and best bands in the world.
"Why did you throw that at me?"
"I have a question, why did you throw that at me?!"
Who was that
LOL classic! James making fun of Layne due to AIC not touring because of rehab and someone chucks a shoe at James. I love both bands, but James earned and deserved that shoe!
@@i4nix13 I loved how he then pretends like they were just throwing it to be rowdy instead of the obvious reason because he was disrespecting Layne.

Based on what I've heard posted on MetallicaTV channel, since 2012 forward he could have easily topped this performance - even in 2020. Everything between 2000-2011 was hit and miss.
James ain't no Layne but he not only pays tribute but he makes it his own to a certain degree!! Love It!! God Bless Layne Staley!!
After Jerry’s solo James just OWNED the place 🤘🏻
Ehh
He nailed that long baaaack note 🤘🏻🤘🏻
AIC!🤘
James sings here with he's own unique style and it's awesome plus this song it's a tough one to sing he does pretty good job
Not the same voice, but the same energy.
Great job!
JAMES IN CHAINS
Better then expected. Nice job james.
I was there !! It was an awesome surprise, I am a huge Metallica fan. I remember it clearly. Metallica played the whole Master of Puppets album,
I remember I went nuts when James said “ And for you, the whole album”
That means something to me anyway and he gets kudos for that
James Blows....he is no where near Layne's talent level
Like i said before. ..that fucker should have stayed home that day
They are friends.

@@ScarletVoodoo guys, if the band allowed it, why are you guys even talking about how it shouldn't happen? Alice In Chains had James hetfield as guest, that's it.
@@FartSniffer1 Well then they're obviously dicks who clearly don't respect Layne as much as they let on. To have someone sing his vocals, someone he openly disliked who mocked him in front of thousands of people about his addiction. And to sing this song.

Has nothing to do with James voice. James was a prick to Layne . Jerry is such a douche for being buddies with this asshole!!
Becky Church he was only a prick because Layne was cancelling their tour dates. If Layne wasn’t addicted to Heroin James would probably have been nicer to him. Besides, you don’t know what went on behind closed doors, you shouldn’t judge.

exactly. lol.
He sounds awesome! I think he seems like hes not used to singing in a grunge style. Which makes sense. But I think with what time he probably had to practice this he did really awesome.
You don't have to be a musician to have an opinion...
I think why some people say this sucked must be because of that time James made fun of Layne at their concert in 94'. They played one of their songs and he made fun of Layne for being an addict despite James being an alchohlic himself and it was really sad thing to see and probably every aic fan that saw it probably felt pretty bad.
@love layne James can definitely sing, he's just not Layne and no one expects him to be
Hetfield just makes anything cool!! Love it
James was awesome here! I think he was a really good friend of AIC's guys.
In the chorus of the song, we can hear early 90s james there. And that makes me think, why doesn't james sing like this every time? he can...
And at the end of this show, Mr. James found out his guitar was disconnected from the amp...
From 3:08 on James does great with the chorus I feel like he just found his comfort zone at this point, the first two choruses he comes in way too hard with the "into the flood again.." bit.
I think he sounds fine, he's just not Layne Staley, imagine Layne singing Disposable Heroes, it would be good but James is the ultimate vocalist for Metallic just like Layne is for Alice in Chains.
jerry in the beginning when he introduced james sounded more like hetfield than hetfield sounded like hetfield
This song is so fn' good it works with every damn singer. Goosebumps.
(every singer great enough to try it) I am seriously impressed James manages a pretty great job on this one, hard ass song to sing.
Oh, where do I begin here? For some reason, I can picture any of Bruce Dickinson, Ian Gillan, Ozzy Osbourne, Corey Taylor, Mike Patton, Robert Plant, or if you wanted to hear a woman sing it, Floor Jansen or Simone Simons doing lead vocals on this.
no one can do it as good as layne but to say James ain't good at this song is foolish

Is everyone deaf or what? He sounds fine here... If you listen carefully you can actually hear black album era James in a few parts.
Maybe, but he was much more inconsistent
I disagree ! I thought it was AWESOME !
It's especially good considering it's not his song and I don't think they had a lot of rehersals- very professional job.
sadsadsa asadasd I disagree. Layne could sing anything.
Most definitely. Couldn't agree more.
Bravo! Very well said, Layne was definitely unique and a tremendous talent.
Like we say here in Brazil, "who am I at the breadline" to say anything about James? He is a legend! I think he peformed very well for someone that is singing out of his vocal range and style.

Respect to James. He did good job.
that wasn't half bad. I enjoyed it
Layne was a fucking prodigy
+Ken Davenport Jerry worte 95% of all AIC SONGS, lAYNE AS MUCH AS I LIKE HIS VOCIE WAS JUST A SINGER.
Just reinforces how good a singer Layne was.
