Hetfield’s voice was on another planet back then.
Give me a time machine
Everyone likes to point to one year that was Metallica's prime but in my opinion it was a span of 2 albums: Justice through end of Black. They were at their peak in the studio as well as out of the studio playing live. Every show since Justice has been tighter and tighter which I think peaked around 93ish-94. So you basically have from 88-94 as their peak.....in my opinion of course. That's just how I rated it.
@@adamyahya4638 I agree, the whole band was unstoppable back then, literally everything was perfect, james's voice, the guitar tones, the drums, lars, and the energy.
You are so right
@@adamyahya4638 I am sory but about voice 93-94 was really weak. For example 91-92 there was excelent voice and also 96 and 99-00
Unforgiven is an emotional song on its own.
But when you listen to it when Metallica play it live it hits you differently, who else agrees ?
Metallica themselves hit different
Dude yes!
@@LordFarquaad967 have you ever taken a arrow to the knee
Totally agree
100% agree
You know you wrote a good solo when you never change it when you play it live. Perfection.
Actually it is changed live
And the cool thing is, he came up with that solo form the top of his head in the moment. Bob Rock pissed him off enough and he just belted it out and it was purely amazing.
@@jameshetfield3105 yet he never wrote it or played it. C'mon basic level knowledge
@@mmg2218 that makes no sense. The first comment said he never changes it, the first reply said he did change it and you said he never wrote it down or played it. Obviously he did play it if he never changes it.
@@garymaidman625 I was being facetious. I apologise.
No more fuckin' public service announcements, alright?
I don't get it
That was what James said, when the fan jumped on stage and talked into to mic.
Mindrex Ok
Jason's backup vocals on the chorus towards the end are just beautiful
Quite the opposite to backup vocals in songs such as Creeping Death, but both are great
Try hero of the day towards the end!!!! amazing

by far. cant get any better than this
Best Unforgiven performance was the one in Seattle 1989
Dao Yang Unforgiven was written in 91
Mantra Robinson
Its a joke. When I was a dumb kid I loved the live shit concert so much I looked up every Metallica song with "Seattle live 1989" after it.
I'm sure this is one of James favourite songs.
Given that they still play it live, I'd say yes... And the meaning behind it is basically about him ..
@@robonbass6864 what's the song about?
@@ohheylads it's mainly James writing about himself... How his parents forced the religion on him ... He couldn't be his own person.. And in the end of the song he says "That old man here is me"... Now he is getting older so it all makes more sense... 🤘
It is, he also said its the most personal one
@@robonbass6864 thats the god that failed, not unforgiven

Therion018 nah he just messin around😂
@@muhammadirsyazman8389 hmmm or maybe because theres always a risk of catching something from strangers
I mean they literally invited their fans to the record showing. A tradition that's only meant for producers and other record labels and managers.
@@Therion0184 I think he meant as a warning to the sound crew, that the mic was not turned on and someone (namelly himself) might fuck it up mid-song
Nobody's talking about that extra solo in the outro. What a superb improvisation. I believe Kirk played that instantaneously and it wasn't rehearsed.
Nope, it wasnt improvisation. You can literally see that before the outro solo James steps aside from his microphone and stops singing so he definitely knew what was going to happen
@@bes5164 They always reherse before they go onstage, Kirk must've tried this in the tuning room or something.
Kirk would always figure out what he would play for solos prior to the show, it wasn't improvised during the show itself but the solo was most likely conjured up in the tuning room right before the show. Still impressive no matter what
@@bes5164 you can adapt to things live you do realise ? What. Just because James stepped away doesn’t mean it’s not improvised. Some of the the licks Kirk might have written before but this definitely sounds like Kirk improvising if you’ve ever heard it . Because he still changes his own solos up these days lol
@@oldmatevb That was no improvisation. He changes his solos, but what? It does not mean they are being improvised.
4:12 this little change Jason made to the bassline gives me the chills
Never noticed that, god that's beautiful

Incredible song, incredible performance
Best live voice
Love. It the only band that made me pickup my. Drumsticks again.

My best friend and neighbor as a kid began playing guitar because we loved MetallicA so much. He had this Live Shit box set and obviously I made copies on cassette tape of this amazing Mexico City show. We knew all the quotes from James and Jason and would mimic it constantly. MetallicA is still a huge inspiration for me like 25 years later.
Amei tudo é todos com serteza
Jason’s backing vocals at the end are sublime
Best part
I love how Hetfield shuts his eyes while playing that intro. I've about got that riff down. It's a beautiful sound.
Where can I learn that lick ??
@@justnn5470 he is playing a minor c major g major but in a spanish or classical way he plays the same notes if you play a normal minor or major chord
He feels it the same way we do
i think James wanted to write more songs like this with slow melodic chord progressions. Timeless Masterpiece.
This and Fade To Black are monumental.
he have..mama said+low mans lyrik and more
Slower Metallica songs have a Hank Williams vibe to them.
Unforgiven 2 and 3 were good, but they didn't have the melody of the original. This is perfection.
@@stephenharrison7514yes best Metallica stuff right there
5:50 that part of the song always gives me chills.
I come back to this video from time to time to especially hear that uhhhh. ❤
The way the vocals (especially Jason's backing) just blends into James' switch from acoustic to electric strumming as well...seamless and ethereal!
bro i saw this comment right when that time hit and i got chills
Hetfield was at his best here. I really think the era from Justice through the Black Album were their best performances. They could do all the previous (awesome) material, but still stretch out and try things out of their comfort zone.
A partir de,este disco en adelante perdieron el rumbo inclusive en este disco se ve que en el disco que venía iba a ser un disco casi todo melodico porque esa era la tendencia que mostraban

Man, despite all of their success and recognition as a band, I still can't help but feel that James never quite got the accolades as one of rocks best song writer and lyricist.

Jason's background vocals are so underrated 😢

I miss Jason. I have nothing against Robert, but Jason just had so much passion for metal.
Too bad cliff was too good to the point that when jason replace him, everybody hating bcos he couldnt match cliff. But he got passion
@@muhammadfarhan581 - Metallica messed up big
in not doing the right thing by Jason. He should
still be with Metallica. Seriously, nothing against Rob, but he, in my opinion, just is not a good fit with Metallica "at all" . And that ridiculous looking (think they call it the crab walk), that he does on stage, imo, that is SO "NOT" Metallica. Sorry, but Jason is the one that belongs on that stage with

James 'best vocal performance for Unforgiven.
I'd kill to hear the Unforgiven performed like this again. James sounding amazing and emotional, Lars actually keeping a steady tempo, and beautiful backing vocals.
Bring back the Chet Atkins classical and ditch the shitty line 6 acoustic. This song would sound glorious again.
Note by note, fill by fill, this was the perfect performance. Nowadays they sound like their own parody performing this song. They changed everything to the worse.

It's honestly a miracle that James is still singing considering how hard he was on his vocals like this. Freaking love it.....thanks for the awesome vocals and music Metallica
James and jason harmonized so good it's amazing! James voice was at its absolute best at that time.....time catches up to all singers...doesn't even sound the same.
He’s actually sounding incredible right now. I’d argue that he got a good chunk of his power and growl back around Hardwired. And I’ve heard him during the pandemic and he’s sounding even better with the time off. So I’m hoping their new album is a complete return to the early 90’s Hetfield. Of course we all age and the vocals deepen but that’s not a bad thing for James’ style...as long as the bark is there.
@@shauner8754 James sounds awesome because he is healthier. The 2nd rehab session was a major help ig
His vocals are a lot cleaner right now, he actually hits most of the difficult notes now better than ever, he's just not as raspy and his voice became naturally deeper
Yeah because now he sounds fucking awesome
You seem to forget he's approaching 60 if he sounded as he did 30 years ago I'd be a bit worried at least he can still sing
The Unforgiven's solo was the first time I had chills with a song when I was a little kid. Now I'm 26 and still got'em.
I am 30 man and have the same fealing.
Great bass tone, parts and backing vocals. Jason FTW!
Personally,I think this drum kit sounds better than lars current drum kit

it's not the kit, it's lars

Even if James’ image was a tough dude back then, you can tell he always had a big heart
3:18 ....James' signature sound that I wish so much he could bring back :(
clementz cliffclaven Me too. He can go to mellow to deep growls at a flick of a switch.
Is not really the age... Is that he actually hurted his voice a couple years before load, people want him to sing like this again claming that he doesnt do it because he is lazy, but he just cant, if i were him i wouldnt either, fucking my vocals just for some gigs...
Couldn't agree more, I think it was during long black album's tour where he hurt his voice, a non stop tour. His voice would never be the same anymore.
Freddy silvas zamudio agreed. im sure that after all these years he probably could do it but its a terrible risk with an obvious outcome. there are sometimes where he does the growl and im like live shit is that you? but he does it rarely and usually just uses the voice he uses now
he actually do it during live show , but just for few seconds, as the other says before he's not young anymore and also had some vocal problems due to black album tour .
nowadays he find a way to get a good voice without problems, tha's why he's so comfortable with hardwired songs .
5:48 the way James says "never me" damn so hot....
Desiré Cobain You got that right, sister! So damn sexy, indeed!
"Never meee(sexy moan)" Sex appeal+
I’m a straight male and I would have to agree.

I got to see them twice in 92 and I feel like that may be close to their peak as far as performing live.

I just love how much talent it takes to make a rock band and rock music. You don't just need a diva in the center with producers making beats on a computer and sound engineers fixing their voice on a computer like rappers or pop artists.
EXACTLY
Even modern "rock and roll" is a disgrace compared to this.
+Oscarntnz lmao why call out metalcore you just don't like bcs they have the " emo " tag with the genre when really some of the most talented musicians in their craft are metalcore musicians so stfu elitist thanks

I think you need to broaden your horizons, plenty of very talented artists in all genres of music.
Kirk with Fender? unexpected!
Heltflippad i was pretty amazed when i saw a strat in his hands..
It's an ESP Custom Model Strat-like guitar of K.H. He used it also in the music video of One. You can see the ESP logo on the video. In addition, if you watched making of death magnetic movie, he has a Telecaster-like ESP guitar, too (and it has humbuckers) :D
