Here's an update on the algae covered Vanda! ua-cam.com/video/L84D9tovOBA/v-deo.html
Pro trick: you can watch series at Flixzone. Been using it for watching loads of movies during the lockdown.
@Bobby Zachary Yup, I've been using flixzone for years myself =)
I’ve learned so much from you. Even though I only have 1 orchid lol. I’m enjoying your videos. Thank you. I’m so glad I found you.☺️ I love your dove too.
Recently I have Algae covered orchids like this. I have been moving houses and I had to leave orchids on their own for several months, they received water through an automatic misting system, but some orchids that sit too close to the nozzle became thickly coated like that. For cleaning algae I use hydrogen Peroxide and magic eraser sponges (melamine sponge) they are really good at cleaning algae from aquarium plants, so now I use them everywhere that algae forms.
I am so sorry about your haul from orchid garden... but I have to say I have ordered 3 batches from them over the last three months and all mine have been very healthy plants. 8 Orchids in total and all are doing well.. they arrived dry though little dehydrated which is no surprise. takes ten days on average to get to me in the uk.
I hope we will see how these two orchids are doing in February-march
Wow I can't wait to see the "then and now" on this plant. We love an underdog!
Wow! I've never seen algae grow on the orchid leaves before.
Omg, @missorchidgirl I have ordered from Orchid Garden and received my order about 2 weeks before your unboxing video. I wish I never ordered from them, I had various issues with each of my 8 orchids, some of which were totally covered in algee. They were so unhelpful in the email they replied weeks later. Hopefully I have managed to save them (thanks to all your videos). I cleaned the algee using your DIY formula for spider mites! I afterwards sprayed with hydrogen peroxide and I think they'll be ok now
Oh my goodness, so much work! I must thank you for willing rolling up your sleeves and thinking to record the process. Sometimes you just need to get in there!
I sure hope they get better now.
Can you please use Sunny by Ikson again in your videos? It is so fitting for orchids! It is my absolute favourite and every time I listen to it, it makes me feel warm and happy (although I would consider me a happy person anyway😁).
I’m so impressed how determined you are to save those orchids. Please post an update.
I just want to say thank you Dani, I've struggled for some years now keeping orchids but, in my world for 2020 finding your channel has been the best year ever for my orchids as they're able to live! 👍
I love these videos-thank you!! It's really great to see how you tackle these really difficult situations. Also, I just ordered my Orchids at Heart sweatshirt:) It's my very first merch purchase from any channel and I'm so excited to get it! Thanks for all of your great content!
Happy Holidays!! I just wanted to comment how much I enjoy your videos, they have taught me soooo much, especially in understanding that everything ultimately must be “massaged” by one’s particular growing medium and climate, (temperature and humidity). Your information and relaxed presentation style is appreciated.
Thank you Dani. Very informative as usual! I am looking forward to seeing them in the next couple of weeks or so. Would love to see how they're doing.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Stay Safe ...
Merry Christmas Danny, hope you and your boyfriend have a well deserved peaceful day. Enjoy your presentations and absolute knowledge of your orchids. Pete from Canada
I know what you mean about loving your orchid that had such a poor start and wanting to improve its lot in life. It's an achievement when they thrive and your orchid was so much happier looking after your treatment. Well done. Happy New Year to you and your family Danni and thank you for your videos. 😊
Dani, you have more faith than I do - or maybe more years. LOL. I would have 'cut my losses' on that first one. I too hope that you are getting credit for the rest of your purchases from that orchid seller - at least get 1/2 of your money back. Anything else would be criminal. They knew where they were shipping to, and they should have taken that into account on the condition of the plants at time of packing. Happy Holidays!
Just received my orchids at heart sweatshirt for christmas and its so nice. Thank you and Merry Christmas!!
18:56. Right side of the video, on the table, between the tray and the moss container: little white critter running around and hiding!
I had to go back and take a look. I saw it too, and boy was he moving! Good eye svps169!
Bhaha that's my buddy spider man, he'll make an appearance in my next video too 🤣
Hoping for a great outcome for these poor orchids! Happy Holidays to you and yours!
Great video! I was just thinking about algae. I’ve had my phals potted in clear glass containers for almost two years, and just now started to get some algae on the roots of two of them. Thanks for sharing your experience, Danny. I’ll see what I can do with mine now too.
Wow that was quite a job trying to save those orchids. Thanks for sharing. Have a very merry Christmas 🎁🎄
Happy holidays to you as well! 🧡 Merry Christmas! 🧡
Merry Christmas Danny! I'm sure you'll be rewarded with the nicest Retusa- flowers soon! 💖💖
Happy holidays to you as well! 🧡
Yes, I have seen orchids covered in algae... From Orchid Garden too. A cattleya with the leaves totally covered on it and an oeceoclades spathullifera with the bulbs green too.
Super great learning video. You have a great New Year. Take care. Kiss the birds.
Wow! I've never seen anything like that before! It looked like green paint. Poor little thing! You did a great job cleaning her up! Happy Christmas🎄
Happy holidays to you as well! 🧡 thanks for all the support! 😘
Mine, I tried used toothbrush and sprayed hydrogen peroxide, and it works too
Looking forward to watching that update 🤞🏻
Hi Danny! My orchid from Orchid Garden arrived covered in algae too! I used an old (soft) piece of sponge dipped in distilled water to remove it! And then I sprayed the plant with hydrogen peroxide 3%!
FYI: Hydrogen peroxide kills algae. I’ve used in fish tank and it works great
Merry Christmas 🎄
Merry Christmas! 🧡
OH dear! I'm sorry about your disastrous haul. These things do happen. I experience issues with algae and too much moss in my garden especially in the area where I have an automatic watering system. I have to clean the orchids and the area with hydrogen peroxide, quatinary amonia, or dishwashing liquid during the winter to reduce the problem. Thanks for sharing.
Last orchid I ordered from OG also came totally covered in algae - leaves, bulbs and all. Took me over an hour scrub it all off with dish soap (and about a week to get rid of that mini zoo in the pot 😱). I hope your poor orchids will pull through. Merry Christmas!
Happy holidays to you as well! 🧡Merry Christmas! 🧡
Omg your beautiful bird!!
Merry Christmas Dani
Merry Christmas to you too! 🧡🧡
Very interesting Danny, the vanda seems impossible to revive, let us know one way or the other if it does or doesn’t survive. Good lesson learned about cleaning an orchid. Merry Christmas and stay home and safe.
Happy holidays to you as well! 🧡
Merry Christmas and a Happy 2021!🎁🎄🎉
Happy holidays to you as well! 🧡
Merry xmas & happy New Year from Australia
Happy holidays to you as well! 🧡 thanks for the wishes! 😘
Some of the orchid in my recent haul from Orchid Garden were also covered in algae... They were mostly young plants and small plants so I had to use a q-tip and peroxide. I didn't bother much with the roots cause they all had new root tips, and fortunately it didn't seem to affect the health of the plants so far. I'm planning a video update on those plants in a month or so, let's see how they hold up.
Merry Christmas!
Happy holidays to you as well! 🧡Merry Christmas! 🧡
Had to revisit this video. I got my hands on a severely dehydrated orchid with its roots *covered* in algae, about this bad overall, actually. And I kind of need it to be able to absorb properly to get the best chance of bouncing back. 😅
So... I am going to go acquire a sponge.
Great to see your face!
I had an Encyclia Cochleata (one of my favorite flowers) that almost died. I babied it for 8 mos. It was in spike. I was so happy. Then one of my dogs (AKA the Devil Dog) stole it and ripped it to shreds. She never bothered with any of my orchids before or after. I think she was jealous (LOL).
I rescued a phalaenopsis from a friends green waste bin, so you could say I'm somewhat of an orchid expert.
Great video as always. Hope the little orchid makes it. Do you have a bean leaf vanda falcata crossed with a Phalaenopsis? What do think of these hybrids? Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Thabk you! 😁 Happy holidays to you as well! 🧡Merry Christmas! 🧡 Oh I don't have a neo x phalaenopsis, I'll look into it!
Hi Danny and Merry Christmas! I just received a gift of a phal at the beginning of bloom of it's many buds. I noticed it's roots and superficial and deeper medium is covered in thick green algae. Should I clean now as shown in your video or wait until the blooms are finished?
Un Joyeux Noel à toi, Dany!
Happy holidays to you as well! 🧡
I lost my Brassovola nodosa to black rhizome rot and i agree with you that it's not a normal issue. I contacted the seller that my plant was dying after 3 days of receipt and then they sent me a replacement but i think their batch was bad because that one took the same route in a few days... Or i might just not be a Brassovola person.
Now i just sit here without my favourite orchid.. maybe I'll try a different seller 🤷♂️😭the last ones were bushy too with 40+ leaves 😭
Hello, I have my first orchid! It seems to be doing well, but the roots outside of the pot keep drying out. I spray them because I don’t want them to break off and die, is there something else that I should be doing? The roots inside the pot look great
Hi Dani. I have a problematic orchid and i was hoping that you could give me advice.
I have a new vanda orchid. But her roots are very thin and dry. They are actually green. It's an old plant but it doesn't have big massive root system. Do you have any suggestion why they feel so dry and why are they thin? How can I help her?
P.S it had algie and i had used your methods and it worked ❤️
Retusa orchids are always like that for me….. they always come with some issue. A virus out broke in my collection due to a retusa var alba…. So far bought retusa three times and it never made it…..
Yesterday I saw an onsidium orchid in a grocery market!
Awesome! I don't even see them in plant nurseries here. 😌
I still am having a hard time seeing the disasterous haul you received. I hope the do right by you and either resend you the orchids lost or refund you. Unacceptable!!!! DANNY, HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS ⛄🎄. God bless you and your family.
Ah this one came too late for me. I bought a huge vanda from an old grower earlier this year. It was covered in algae and unfortunately all the advice I got was wrong and it very quickly diminished and died...
Hi miss orchid girl,
Where did you ordered your Vanda from.
Noticed you didn't flame scissors between each cut. I was trained to do that to avoid introducing pathogens into the succeeding cuts. Not necessary?
It's good practice to sterilize between cuts.
@@1FISH I believe it. Ty, for agreeing.
Hi Danny! I think I know (generally) what that mystery bug might be. It looks a lot like a beneficial predatory mite that eats actual pest bugs like spidermites and thrips. There are many different species, so I don't know exactly which one it is. You'll also have to confirm what it is by looking at images and seeing if those bugs look the same as the ones I think they are, since 100% identifying them over video is hard to do. One big thing that distinguishes them from thrips is that these do not jump, and they walk very fast compared to thrips, which generally don't move around that much unless they're provoked. Here's one site about one of the species, but definitely Google "beneficial orange mites" (or red) to see more photos. I also freaked out when I first saw these bugs, but after I learned what they are, I'm very happy to see them! laidbackgardener.blog/2016/01/31/dont-kill-those-red-mites/
Hi, no it didn't look anything like that, more like a combination of aphid and thrip.. kinda longish, but thicker and brown.. maybe it was a cockroach baby 😱🪳
@@MissOrchidGirl Oh! I have no idea then. Definitely better to be safe than sorry and get rid of them. I hope the orchid does well with your care!!
Hello Danny. Nice video!. I wanted to recommend two flower shops-sites that you could order orchids which are located in Greece. I found them very recently. All this time I was ordering orchids from many different orchid nurseries which most of them if not all of them were recommended by you
airplants.gr
greenmall.gr
I think that they ship to Cyprus.
you kept mentioning hydrogen peroxide spray in most of your videos.... May I ask: Is it 2 or 3% H202 straight from the bottle that I can buy from CVS or you mix it with water for spray? What is the mixing ratio of 2 or 3% H2O2 and water? thanks
@@sandsgrimstead9201 thanks you for the info...
I THOUGHT THOSE WERE HER FEET AT 15:12 I WAS SO CONCERNED
This is the winter solstice. On the down is the shortest daylight hours of the year. On the up, Spring is on the way, sun light will be appearing earlier, days longer and soon roots will be popping again. GET READY !!! ✨
