My orchid highlight this year is I found your channel to keep my daughters mini Phal alive. Then rescued a regular Phal. They are both still alive and I don’t think they would be without your wonderful guidance. Thank you! Happy new year!

My Orchid highlight for 2020 is that my switch to LECA and self watering is working so far! Three of them are in bloom right now! So fulfilling to try out something different and it works for the Orchid and me, too! 😁

Switched some of my collection to your new watering method, with bark and spagnum moss, And i LOVE it, it saves time, it saves water, it saves fertilizer, and i no longer spread deceases among my orchids, thanks for making these videos.

Thanks for another year of great content!! I've learned so much because of you. This year I focused on not only really "listening" to my orchids, but I also finally felt comfortable expanding my collection & adding a few cattleyas, a dendrobium nobile & a denphal. So far so good, but we'll see 😅 can't wait to see what you do in 2021!

My highlight is getting a flower spike that currently is still in bud on a Phal. I rescued from a box store 2 years ago. It had already spent its bloomes. It was showing signs of dehydration. It was marked down from $15 to $3 (US). Every step of progress ended up with a step backwards, including my daughters cat knocking it out of the window twice. Each time damaging a leaf. It had been setback and mistreated so much I didnt not expect anything from it. I am very excited to see what her flowers will look like when she blooms in a few weeks.

I really liked your new set up with the bark and moss. I live in Florida so I know about long summers and I found that your new set up worked well here in this hot and humid climate. I bought a couple of new to me orchids this year and I've learned a lot about them and how to care for them thanks to you. Happy New Year!

miss Orchid Girl. I had a beautiful little white Orchid that my daughter had gave me for Mother’s Day it was in a clay pot that had open slits on the sides i had it for about 10 years until i had to move long story short unless they knew how to take care of an Orchid it will die my love for plants is the reason for my Orchid to serve as long as It did I can tell when a plant needs water and when it does not , not all plant’s like the same amount of water my Orchid showed me that it only wanted to be watered about every 7days but it bloomed because I didn’t know enough about Orchids to do what It needed to help it bloom but your experience is now helping me to do the thing for my orchids , a month or two before Christmas I got a little white orchid and was a lot more of them still there so some time in December I was at the same Giant foot store and they still had some left so I got them they were not looking so good so for Two dollars and something, I took them home gave them a little water and put them right next to the one that I had got before I cannot remember if it was the first day or the next day after I looked at them I had them all in a row and right next to each other , and they there leafs were all straight up as if say I miss you , and they were all from the same batch of orchids . and there leafs stayed up until i moved again and they need to be repotted and i lost one of the two that I had last gotten but my the first one i got and the last one I got are still living I just repotted them and so far they are doing fine it’s been like 3 days and I gave them some water and they are doing just fine. I have all ways watered them from the top because like you said the clay pots will mold that’s y I didn’t soak them from the bottom

Two thoughts while watching this video. One, if you live near a port where cruise lines dock, you might want to be a tourist stop/destination for people who love orchids and want orchid advice. You might make some money and be able to open a bigger location for growing orchids. You have a collection of orchids that are the envy of the outdoor orchid gardens I visited in Florida, USA and the Caribbean. Your knowledge and experience with orchids rivals and most likely surpasses that of most university botany professors.
Two, the highlight for me this year is the non-stop blooming of my 3 Phals, 2 of which were "rescue" orchids. I am getting 1 to 2 secondary flower spikes coming of the main flower spike. Also, new primary spikes are forming while the secondary spikes are starting to bloom. I use a mixture of Orchid Focus and Miracle Grow fertilizers. The Miracle Grow upped the NPK level which Orchid Focus was too low in(something you mentioned in a previous video). The Orchid Focus provided the other nutrients that were totally absent in Miracle Grow. I use the water from the orchids to water my tropical plants which I grow in my basement from late September to early June. My dwarf lemon and lime trees are now flowering due to this water that I used for my orchids. In the basement, they grow near 2 windows and a sliding glass door. I don't have any artificial light there. I am eating the fruit from these lemon and trees which also flowered last summer.
I hope someday to have a keiki grow from my orchids.
    PS.....thanks for all your advice.

This year may have been terrible but i think if i didnt have all this time to spend watching youtube and learning about orchids i wouldnt be able to say that every one of my phals (8) have flower spikes! So i must find positives in this year of covid and lockdowns and not having my family with me during any celebrations this year. May 2021 bring us all happiness and gratitude for alot of things. Best potting for me is ...
    Bottom _ fired clay

This method will increase air flow while holding moisture around rots
Fertilizer _ fish/worm tea rain water

Hi Danny! I also experimented with cool and cold growers this year with amazing results! I have a very similar climate to you, we have hot hot summers that last forever, and winters that are short and very mild. One difference; we have extremely high humidity. I kept my masdevallias in clay pots in just moss, and placed them in large plastic drainage trays made for larger houseplants. I would keep my ceiling fan on 24/7 in the room (my bedroom). I would fill the tray with water when I noticed the moss drying, and they would absorb the water. Yes my orchids were sharing the same water reserve, but I had no problems thankfully. It was a risk I was willing to take. My orchids grew like weeds and bloomed well. I had a rootless masdevallia that came in the mail from a shop, and it rooted well and even bloomed from new growths. But thank you for making that initial video as it inspired me.

Thank you and yes this is a very helpful (and validating) video. I’m one of your subscribers that went and did what you warned not to do: I converted the majority of my orchids to leca and none of them liked it, similar to your experience. Slightly different from your approach however, I converted each orchid differently depending on how the orchid’s root system ‘behaved’. One mini phalaenopsis needed more hydration and is thriving in a sphagnum moss & bark mix. One regular sized phalaenopsis orchid wanted even more hydration so I had to move it to all sphagnum moss and it is doing very well. But the rest of my phalaenopsis (one mini and two regulars) are doing very well in a white river rock medium layered on top of a thin layer of vermiculite which is layered on charcoal at the bottom of the pot. The five other dendrobiums (den-phals and nobile-types) I have are still adjusting to the river rock mix (same mix as I mentioned above) which I have in a tall glass vase filled halfway with diluted 20-20-20 orchid fertilizer/tiny drop of calmag/kelp fertilizer .. and it is now winter here so I’m still monitoring how they are adjusting to this setup as we approach spring/summer. So my question to you is : did you consider trying another inorganic medium for some of your orchids that didn’t like the leca.. like the white river rock (it’s really pretty!)? Happy Holidays Dani 💝

I’m fairly new to orchids. Last night I stayed up late watching your videos and decided I liked the idea of leca, so today I went out and bought a few bags, came home and repotted six of my ten phals. Now I found this video from a year ago and see that you don’t do semi hydro any more! I’m not sure what I should do. I don’t have a ph meter, so I will just have to see how they do.

Thanks Dani, and wishing you a Happy 2021! I learned a lot from you. Highlights? Hmm... got a mini-cymbid to bloom (awaiting the others to get going); and got a Hawaaian "Bamboo Orchid" going from a cutting. Oh yes -- and an intensely overgrown unknown catt was subdivided two years ago, and some have started re-blooming; lovely pink and white, with yellow center, and very heavy scent like cinnamon. I love it! Then lost my sense of taste and smell for a few weeks (mild Covid? who knows). It's back, and the bloom is still scented. Be well,

Hi I live in the UK. I have converted all my orchids to Lechuza Self watering pots. All of them I have used Westland Hydroleca. I recently test the ph and the
difference 0.02 higher with the Leca. I did get some slight salt bloom. I overcome the salt problem by top layering with inert gravel. I believe my cooler conditions in the UK is the reason the system works for me. It really is very low maintenance. Love your channel and your willingness to try new equipment and media and most of all that you do not dismiss systems that do not work in your environment, but are happy to say they may work in other people's places. Keep up the good work. Regards

    Highlights 2020

    2) A quick chat with MOG on Discord

I had very good luck with an orchid terrarium this year with a huge variety of miniature species, almost no maintenance and non stop blooms. There were a few decisions that I made in the set up that ended up contributing to the success. Happy to share them with you, should you want to approach yours again. I’ll have a look at your terrarium video and see what you weren’t happy with beyond the mushrooms.

Thanks for sharing! I found some of the same problems with leca as well. No media is one size fits all. I also noticed when repotting sometimes it is IMPOSSIBLE to break up the root ball in leca, and if theres dead roots inside the ball too bad, theres no getting in there. Also the algae/moss gets out of hand since repotting is much less frequent and can choke the roots.

Last year - 2019-I found 7 mystery grocery store orchids on sale. I swooped them up because of their structure on my search for beautifully scented orchids. They had no scent in the store. I fought off spider mites on some with your recipe and am fighting still on 2 of them but there is new growth finally. Otherwise that works great! Thanks! Hoorah! One bloomed a 2nd time and is a scented pastel green with a creamy white lip with tiny reddish spots. It smells exotic and unbelievable but not imposing! Happiness! I got 2 Nelly Eislers by mistake but no one can have enough of those! A year's supply would be good. My Tiny Twinkle in yellow is blooming next to a floweing Berry Oda in dark purplish pink. A Vanda I found abandoned with burnt leaves looks great after letting go of the past. 2 others didn't make it. After watching tons of videos to heal a Phallenopsis for a family member, all the other ones we have are happy. I finally got myself a soldering iron for Christmas. The hot nail, candle and wrench gets old as a method. Others have buds so 2021 will not be so lonely. They are taking their time for some reason no matter where they are placed. No chocolate orchid this year. I tried. No pandemic answer from some nurseries. Now the laptop is broken. Question:Have you ever used a homeopathic nourishing spray on your orchids and if so , what resulted afterwards? Merry Christmas and stay healthy! Thanks for all of the beautiful views of plants throughout the year. I love your birds! See you in 2021!

    My Orchid highlights:
    1. Finding a medium that works... Bark, lava stones, and charcoal seem to be best for my semi arid and cold environment.
    2. No more miltoniopsis... EVER!!!
    3. Saving a paph that my garden center was throwing out and nurturing it to the point of gaining a new fan growth.
    4. Jewel Orchids OMG they are amazing for my dark environment and I love the meadow like flowers.
    5. Getting a new job, so having to give away my collection. My father offered to take one. I was so excited to give him my denphal and make a care sheet for him it looks amazing in his townhome and I'm so excited for him to experience this amazing orchid journey!

What I also decided after watching your infuriating experience with online ordering , was that I’ll forego that temptation and shop my local shops to buy in person. What I recently discovered at a box store was a variety of healthy, carefully wrapped young orchids with detailed name tags in 4” pots. With all your tutorials , I feel pretty confident that I can raise my new Enanthleya and Encyclia to grow and bloom🤞

Oh dang! I had brought a bag of leca from Ikea, not for semi-hydro, but rather as an additive or for emergencies. Good thing I now know about the ph!
I do share the secret wish of using non-organic material, though. For over a decade, I was into cacti, and you can keep them in pure pumice or similar as long as you fertilize. Perfect!

Happy 2021, Dani, and I think about orchids a lot. I only have room for five phase ops is plants and I have five. Just when I thought one was going to kick the bucket, it busted out with a flower bud. This gives me time to determine what I will one day have. I have the IKEA clay pebbles which I use only for the trays under the pots. Otherwise I am a total sphagnum moss woman. I soak them under the faucet when they are dry. They are doing fine but I do want something else that likes to dry out and then be watered. I bought a new shelf which should allow me one more. I want something easy and I live in a northern climate. Have you a suggestion? Again, I have time. I enjoy your channel a lot and thanks for it.

Im currently trialing semi-hydro but using 100% pumice instead of LECA.
Im also trying a completely different transition method: instead of completely removing all the previous media, I just partially replace some of organic media with the pumice partially until all of it is pumice. The results have been very encouraging.

I tried leca when you were in your very own leca phase because i thought it might work for me ... Which it did for while just like you and about 6 months ago i started transitioning back again🤣 because i did not have the time to monitor all the stuff and some plants didn't take well to the transition and finally now here i am with only one phalaenopsis left in leca. All the rest are back in cocopeat and coco chips. But since i did not know what to do with the left over leca , i started mixing it into the cocopeat mix for more aeration and so far so good. 😁😁
In a way you taught me the lesson "don't go around doing things in big scale when you don't know how to use it. Always try in a smaller scale and then work up". Here i sit with 30 litres of leca with nothing to do as i write this😅🤦‍♂️🤣

Happy Holidays! In your terrarium set-up shots, were those Haraella Odorata (aka retrocalla) by chance? I have 4. I actually started with those 😅 and two are great and two are JUST hanging on. Was just curious if you know much about them. There are only a couple of videos about them in English and they aren't instructional, only showing the plants.

If you ever tried growing Catasetinae orchids in semihydro, you can really experience the joy of watering everyday during the growing season. Mine can literally empty the reservoir in a single day! But sadly I might also have to switch back to the old bark and sphag, because I no longer have enough time to water everyday :(
Also your Ludisia remids me of my Goodyera hispida (maybe not the same, but similar) it was my favorite jewel orchid, until it was eaten by spider mites :( :( :(

Hi Dani, I'm from Toowoomba Australia & oh boy I was so excited to find a Jewel ludisia at my local bunnings store 2 days ago 😃 very expansive, now I'm scared to re-pot it lol. Our climate is probably cool to intermediate, I was thinking, after watching your video re-potting a jewel to use potting mix with fertiliser in it with quater being perlite? I would really love your opinion pretty please 😁
Your terrarium was my most interesting as I too was growing a mini ideogessii? Dendrobium in a terrarium which it loved until I broke it, but all is well it now lives on our deck outside & loves it!

So funny that you mention jewel orchids, I just found some on Facebook marketplace of all places! Very tempted, just not sure about shipping in USA winter. Seattle orchids calls the Macodes Petola a hot growing orchid, so I’m not sure how they’ll do in my climate (72F mostly year round). Can you give us more detail and an update on how yours are doing, Danny?

Hi Danny! Great that you are going to grow more Jewel orchids they are just sooo beautiful! I think you meant Orchidz.nl, I also try to contact them on other matters via instagram and sometimes they are fast in replying and sometimes indeed they just dont, in general I am happy with them but I also live in NL so it is easy for me to get orchids by post from these nurceries that are located near me. There are also a few growers in the NL, I get my Jewel orchids from orchids Wubben here in NL, but I pick them up myself and I think their webpage is not that user friendly, but maybe you can try to contact them and ask them to sell you some if they send to your region, they currently have some beautiful varieties. Good luck with the search and its always nice to hear about how new projects work or dont, having my orchids in semihydro also didnt work for me in my climate but yeah, we need to experiment to find what works according to each climate and lifestyle. Regards

May I suggest making your terrarium bioactive? The springtails and isopods will help keep mold down and help clean up your tank :D I'm planning on making a terrarium with jewel orchids and maybe a Paph. Still debating.

Because I am often away for 3-4 weeks at a time I have to find a semi hydro solution - but I am finding that ... you don't have to use LECA. I use it on the bottom but bark on top and ... all good.

I wonder if this "pot gravel" that's sold here would be an alternative for LECA. It says in the bag that it's neutral, without minerals etc bleeding out.

Hi Danny, most interesting because I am fighting an urge to bin my two vandas, they are too big, take up a lot of spaceI, don’t fit well on a shelf, I feel that they are not happy in a pot, let’s face it professional, commercial vandas growers never grow them in pots, surely for good reasons !

Hey! I live in Mallorca, so we are Mediterraneum neighbours, and I know a type of orchid you may be interested on that grows perfectly in this weather! Bee orchids! They are not as incredible as the tropical ones, but they are pretty small plants with small but beautiful flowers!

Why not pure hydroponics then? I found that my Neofinetia grow quite well with the bottom 1/3 of just a few roots dipped into my aquarium. It's actually ridiculously maintenance free above water. Only problem is that my aquarium doesn't like being fertilized that much, leading to algae bloom, and the orchids hanging above it makes maintenance difficult

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  2 роки тому

Hi, lava rock, pumice, perlite, leca etc. they are all aerators. Very good in a mix if you need more aeration. I don't need more aeration in my very warm climate, I always need more water retention, so it would not work out for me as it would for other people. It won't be a useful video :P
