    I am so glad someone else said it. I grow lots of different plants - aside from orchids - in clear pots, A cover pot limits the algae and provides that darkness they like but I also get the benefit of seeing the root growth.
    I’m always very happy to have a little algae in my pots because of all the reasons you mention. I know my substrate/pot is healthy when there is algae present. In all the years I’ve been growing houseplants, I’ve never had the algae become a detrimental issue, most likely due to my climate. I see it as a welcome benefit. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge on algae. I feel more people should be less afraid of it 🌿💚

      HI Sharon 😍💐 yes!! Bring on the algae!! I have never had issues with algae either, and well... if people find it unsightly, then don't grow epiphytes is all I can say! It is all part and parcel of growing epiphytes and the older a root is the more algae it is going to get. Everyone loves orchids in their natural habitat... well... *cough have they looked at the roots? 😅 I just don't get the train of thought! Thank YOU for confirming your experience with algae presence, in your comment! People just need to get over it, or... don't grow epiphytes 😬 sorry! But I read your comment and I thought just how refreshing it was 👍🏼 hope you had yourself a fabulous day! Thank you for watching, Sharon 🌸

    Hate, hate, hate algae in my orchid containers ( I grow mainly s/h in leca ) and the algae grows so fast when using glass containers. But my orchids don’t mind it - it’s MY problem! I do slide the plant out and clean the glass because I just can’t stand it, but it doesn’t seem to affect the plant….. that’s the beauty of growing in leca! Thanks for this video - I do feel better about it!

      Rennee, hi 😍💐 welcome!! I have not seen you here before, so.. first of all, a warm warm welcome and thank you so much for being here 🙌🏼 I really appreciate it! I used to have issues with algae in my containers as well, until I understood what the benefits of it actually were, and seeing as our cases don't get extreme in repotting etc, I just accepted it for what it is. Love me leca 🙃 I have a weird relationship with leca 😂😂 thank YOU so much for watching this video, and for leaving me a comment with your thoughts and feedback 🤗 I hope you had a fabulous day and, once again, welcome! 🤗🌸

    🦒🙌💐 Very interesting approach 👌 I love the mosses but algae are not really appealling to me 😒. I don't like to see them in my water culture glass vases, especially those filamentous algae that turn the water green. However, I have another type of algae growing on the roots of one of my Phals, they look like moss but they aren't. So, it is good to know that algae actually can release oxygen and that they are not always detrimental as some older roots get inevitably green over time. I didn't know algae could grow on leaves too. Always learning from you. Wishing you a productive nice day, hoping you wake up to a sunny warm saturday 😍🤗😘

      FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good morning, meine liebe Freundin! 🤩 I used to hate the algae forming on the sphagnum moss, just because of the unsightliness, and how quickly the moss would become useless as the algae grew into all the tight areas, but when it comes to roots... once I understood what algae actually does for them, it was a light bulb moment for me. I kept thinking of my roots in Kenya, and they were pretty much camouflaged with algae etc and if it were not for new roots posing such a contrast, it would appear that the old roots and the tree had become one. After remembering that image, I was happy to see algae on my roots and have not fussed with it anymore. Algae is constantly in a state of oxygen flatulence 🤣 (with the exception of sphagnum moss in a pot, then, it will start to commit suicide because it itself is being suffocated out of oxygen. Still, by that time, the pot needs repotting anyway... 🤷🏼‍♀️ so, hakuna matata! Give the orchid high humidity, steamy conditions, and algae will settle on the leaves. It is amazing to see in nature, but a no no if we get an orchid from a nursery into our collection. Nature and culture are 2 different things, so... should you get one in at some point, remove the algae in stages, if it is a bad case. Really appreciate you watching and I am glad that this video had some information that was useful, amiga! Thank you so much for watching 🥰 hope your Saturday was fabulous and wish you a wonderful start to Sunday 🌸❤️

    YES! It's ultimately all about balance and harmony! Love it! Thanks for debunking the algae myths...I actually like the green look of the Vanda roots of my plants that grow outdoors under bamboo. It makes them look much more natural, closer to their native environments, and the orchids definitely benefit from the relationship with algae. I've never seen algae on the leaves of my orchids. Thanks again, Nina!

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 роки тому +7

      Hi Ann 😍💐 thank YOU so much for your comment and for watching, Ann 🤗 algae on leaves will come with orchids from nurseries that are high humidity and if they don't clean the leaves off, then you will get one in the mail with a layer of algae on it. I can think of Andy's Orchids in the US, because of how he has everything on a mount and high humidity environment, and Orchid Garden in Poland. Sometimes, their orchids arrive with algae on the leaves, because they don't clean the orchids on arrival from high humidity climates, like Malaysia and Thailand. It is nice that you have not had orchids sent to you with algae on leaves. Shows that nurseries can be bothered to go the extra mile. Hope your Saturday was fabulous 🤗🌸

      Hi Stephen 🥰💐 not hurting at all! Flushing etc... there is so much oxygen going on around the root system, it is just a matter of aesthetics... personally, I don't mind the algae on my roots and I hope that anyone who has issues with it, or is in doubt, will reconsider, because the benefits to the orchid outweigh our need for aesthetics. Thank you so much for watching, Stephen! Hope your Saturday was stellar 🌸😘

    Very interesting video. What about the algae being acidic, isn’t that bad for the roots? I repot my orchids every 2 year’s. Bark isn’t too bad but , spagnum moss gets algae very quickly. So my orchids growing in spagnum get repotted every year. You have stored my thinking, which is a good thing. Thanks Nina for doing this video. 🤗👏🌺

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 роки тому +7

      Hi Shirley 😍💐 algae will only get acidic in extreme cases... and usually, unless there is a major disruption to our repotting regime, something that impedes what we normally do, there is no time for algae to get to that point in our culture. sphagnum moss being the only media, where algae can pose a problem faster, because there is no way of flushing out dead algae seeing as the moss compacts, so, in that case, the repots are done more frequently. Your repot schedule is sufficient and any algae that forms in that time period is not a problem at all, it actually helps with the oxygen gases, especially.... in the sphagnum moss where airflow is not really a given. Thank YOU so much for, once again, watching my video and leaving a comment, Shirley! I hope that you had yourself a fabulous Saturday 🌸

      Pau, hi 🤩💐 welcome!! I have not seen you here before, so first of all, a warm warm welcome, and thank you so much for being here, I really appreciate it! Thank you also, for watching my videos 🤗 for your positive feedback 🤗 here is a link to the company where I bought my MSU from back in 2018. tezulaplants.com/products/msu-fertilizer-13-3-15-for-tap-water-ro-rain-water. I did not get this in Europe, I had to import it from the USA. So, yes, I understand your frustration with not being able to have it in Europe... also, I had to pay import fees of 21€ back in the day, but I bought 4 bags of it in one go, so that I would not have to go through the procedure year after year. I still have one bag left... which I will be saving, because, this year I am trying out RainMix for the first time, which is supposedly the equivalent to MSU. So far, it is too early for me to say if RainMix is just as good, but, everyone I know seems to have similar results with RainMix as I had with MSU, as long as the culture of the orchid is spot on, of course. Here is the link to RainMix www.akerne-orchids.com/en/12-rain-mix from Akerne Orchids in Belgium... they happen to have fantastic quality orchids as well 🤭😉😬 let me know if this was of any help to you, Pau! I am so glad that you found my channel and that we have the same climate! No need to interpret something based on different conditions 👍🏼 thank you so much for your support here on my channel, and once again, welcome 🙌🏼🌸

    OK. So this has absolutely nothing to do with the video (its a good topic but man there are a lot of people that equate algae with death, they should see my pots). I don't know why it just popped into my head, but how is the Paph gratixianum from Fernanda doing (the one you tied to the decorative coral fan)?
    I also found someone to do the backsplash. Half the price. Still more than I expected but it is fine. I don't have to do it, I've seen photos of their work, they'll do a good job.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 роки тому +7

      Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! The death of roots because of algae... well, I am going to be so bold to say that, if it gets to that point, then we need to find another adjective that escalates the word 'extreme'... and I would have to point the finger at the person who has root death because of algae... *cough, someone did not do their 'job' if it was the algae that killed the roots. 😬 ok, I will step down from my soap box now! 😅 the gratrixianum is doing fabulously 🦚 I will screenshot your comment, and do an update on it. For paph standards, it is growing like a weed and... 🥁🥁🥁 rooted in 💪🏼👍🏼 I am so happy to hear that you will be getting what you want, at a price that you consider acceptable, even if it is still a little pricey, but, ... this is great news, Michael!
