What blows my mind is the fact that this was recorded LIVE, while she had a cold and was sick with cancer, which she died from just a few months later. Truly one of the greatest singers and arrangers of our time.
So sad. I play her CDs all the time. I love her version of Fields Of Gold, but her cover Christine McVie's Songbird from Rumours gets me everytime. Gone too soon!
I lived a mile from Blues Alley. One of my colleagues, a fellow teacher, moonlighted there as a bartender. Every day she would tell me, "You have to come by and hear this extraordinary woman; she has the most amazing voice I've ever heard. Please come!" Busy year. Busy woman. To my lasting chagrin, I did not. That extraordinary singer was, of course, Eva and she died that year from cancer. So when I hear her sing, I ache with the loss of her and the lost opportunities I squandered. I tell my students this story and urge them to never turn down an invitation to hear a writer, singer, or artist share their work. Time is fleeting and we get only a few such golden opportunities. I'm playing this for them today.
runninginsept It's not a matter of owing anybody anything. At a certain point, you have to ask, if he's real and he allows people to go through this crap and worse, why ARE you following him?
askaflamininja If God is as all-knowing and omniscient as we make him out to be, what makes you think he OWES you anything - much less a "good" or "decent" life? Get your head out of your ass. Unlike you, god is responsible for the world. If he thought all suffering was unfair and needless, life will not exist, and he would not be all-knowing. This song and Eva’s performance is incredible, I listen every night and I know it will break me up reason my wife passed away just before Christmas 2022 she was in hospital for eleven weeks on a real rollercoaster of ups and downs i was with her everyday during the illness 10/12 hours a day fortunately as some people didn’t have that option during covid ,every night she would say go now you must be tired then add move the curtains so I can see the clock and don’t be late tomorrow we would kiss good night and I would leave her lying in that hospital bed, it wasn’t until 48 hours before she passed away she whispered don’t leave me tonight,I stayed by her side until the very end which was very surreal and peaceful that moment was the end of our 57 years together, I miss her so much life is too short but beautiful.

This is one of the rarest times when the cover is just better than the original. Cindy Lauper was great but this song was clearly made for Eva Cassidy...one of the purest vocals I've ever heard. R.I.P, girl.
Hedon No need to compare to the original. This is a fucking amazing piece of art. Eva's music has changed my life. She was taken from us too soon. She deserved better.
Hedon She has a better voice than Cyndi Lauper (though not as original), but don't try to say a song was made for someone that didn't write it. It's Cyndi's song. The end.
Jenny Starr who said it isn't Cyndy's song? I did admitted that. All i said was since Eva sang the song way better than Cyndy, it means the song is better suited for Eva's voice and she owned it.
Hedon Odds are someone will always be able to sing the song better, lots of people have amazing voices, fewer can write amazing songs. I prefer Eva's version, but saying it was made for her is doing a disservice to Cyndi. Personally just wouldn't bother comparing, it's all down to personal preference.
she really puts TV talent show contestants in their place... no theatre, no production, no stupid dance routines, she just gon stage and sang the song, and that's all she needed to do

James T Me, too. We kept her music and legacy going in the music rooms of paltalk. She must surely be in GODS HOLY CHOIR now. She brings me to tears every time I hear her.
Her voice is so pure, strong, and beautiful. And it comes right out of the core of her being. Listen to any of the songs she performed, and you will find yourself in tears. Eva, you are sorely missed.
One of the most painful aspects of life is being ALIVE when amazing people you care about die. That grief cannot be described or talked about in any way that gives justice to the depth of the experience. But music helps, especially when it's performed by someone as amazing Eva Cassidy was.
I went to Walmart today, and looked for her cd,and could not find it. when I heard her voice I knew she was the most talented female vocalist I have ever heard. such a shame. she will always be my supper star.
@@robinhosleftfoot Thats a matter of perspective, Im here listening because what she did is so beautiful, every song she touches is incredible, but all her best bits are other peoples songs. I love Eva but the untrained, slightly gritty version by the writer Cindy Lauper, is equally as good, and depending on my mood, sometimes better, there is more than a beautiful voice.
@@jimallen9442 I find it absolutely absurd that one has to have written a song for a performance to be judge in the top echelon. Such a sad misguided arbitrary qualification.
There's Aretha and this woman...everyone else get in line behind. I've been a musician for 47 years....the last 30 in Nashville as a picker and recording engineer. I've recorded dozens of the best singers music has to offer...this woman was so far out in front of the pack it's almost unfathomable. Her mastery of her vocal instrument was amazing.
Oh, that's a tough argument. I also have a musical background, lesser than you do. Mostly I was a local picker, songwriter and family music teacher but that doesn't matter other than to say I didn't just roll in off the street, I started playing in 1965. Back to Eva... So I would say you have to say a trained musician or self taught has to be a catagory of separation. As well as Eva wasn't her own songwriter. And then there is music business men, not woman ran things, decided fates. And men mostly were in the band, made decisions. For example, had times been different, Emmylou probably would have replaced Gram in the Byrds and not ended up Gram's "girl singer"? What I am trying to say is time and place and training are part of the equation. You definitely made a fine argument for future discussion. Eva is pure therapy for all hearts.
"Almost unfathomable." I think you summed it up right there. It wasn't mastery per se, but it was, but it wasn't. Eva's genius was in between the notes.
Well Blooze...I know you know it was her soul. She lived the songs from within...to the outside. She lived them. And died much too soon. Maybe, as a result. Maybe.
Found this song through Smallville of all things when I was a teenager. Still listening. Incredible performance, incredible lady. Taken before her time.
Finally, a cover that reduces it down to a pure version, so many people oversing or put in random dynamics, but she nails everything here and makes changes in places that are appropriate and tasteful. This is how you cover a song
This is literally what perfection sounds like. This live version is even better then the recorded version Eva did. It literally blows my mind that this woman never had her big time moment in life. She’s literally timeless as an entertainer and I always some how find myself coming back to listen to her time after time.
She had an amazing ability to create space through her genius timing. Listen to her use of vocally coming in on upbeats vs. downbeats, and drawing out space in between but always landing where it matters most. You can't teach that.
The ability to break your heart, simply by singing a song, is a rare genius. I remember listening and enjoying this song in the 90’s. Eva uplifts the song to a heartbreaking, unbelievable emotional level.
The lyrics from Cyndi Lauper and Rob Hyman are incredible, but it is Eva who takes us on a journey that Cyndi could not. This song makes you a participant and not a listener. Outstanding.
Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick and think of you Turning in circles confusion is nothing new Flashback to warm nights Almost left behind Suitcase of memories, Time after sometimes you picture me I'm walking too far ahead You're calling to me, I can't hear what you have said And you say go slow I've fallen behind The second hand unwinds If you're lost you can look and you will find me Time after time If you fall I will catch you I'll be waiting Time after time If you fall I will catch you I'll be waiting Time after time Time after time After your picture fades and darkness has turned to gray Watching through windows I'm wondering If you're okay And you say go slow I've fallen behind The drum beats out of time If you're lost you can look and you will find me Time after time If you fall I will catch you I'll be waiting Time after time If you fall I will catch you I'll be waiting Time after time Time after time Mmm, time after time Ooh, time after time Time after time
Every song I've heard her sing is as close to perfect as you can get. She always put her soul into it. This is no exception. I'm so glad she was with us even though she left too soon.
She's got one of the most beautiful and healing voices I've ever heard. She sits, plays her guitar and singing. SImple. No gimmicks. Just purely beautiful.
It’s 11/2023 and I’m listening to this and feeling goosebumps all over my arms and back. I don’t even know how I ended up here in UA-cam but it’s a wonderful end to a stressful day. She melts all the ugliness from war news, problems at work, and general negativity away. Thank you, Eva dear, rest in peace.
Just found her today cant believe I missed out on a talent like her till today. Her voice gives me goosebumps and brings a tear to my eye and I think I saw a comment say she's passed R.I.P. Eva you are so missed and I just found you🙁😞
It's astounding to me that she didn't become famous until after her death. I think maybe if she had lived, she would've made it big. Such a huge talent.
As we know, this was performed a bit less than a year before she passed away at a far too young 33. I first became aware of her in 1998. Just an incredible songstress. Her voice always made me think that, deep down inside, she knew she was not long for this earth. It’s that touch of melancholy you hear in everything she sings. It’s there. I do think she knew. God bless her for giving us what she did, and rest easy, Eva.
Russell Brown ~ She was not well at this point, at least as I remember it, but may not have been aware she had terminal cancer. At least, she had not been officially informed. But when you hear and watch her live “Over The Rainbow,” it’s impossible not to feel she was already on another trajectory and that she somehow knew that. It is so other worldly and beautiful, it’s as if she were tapping into that other layer of consciousness. But that’s just me ...
Searched for "Time after Time" because I needed a lullaby before bed after a very long hard day. This song always resonated with me ever since I first heard it back in high school when it was first on the radio. Not a big Cindy Lauper fan but she wrote a gem and sang it well. But then I listened to this. Never heard of Eva Cassidy before. Wow. Sublime doesn't begin to describe this performance. This is so intimate, so powerful, so incredibly moving. There's nothing like a person singing alone with an acoustic guitar to reveal what's in their heart and soul...Eva's is absolutely bottomless. Such a tender and elegant touch on the guitar and a voice of pure gold. The emotion and expressiveness is absolutely off the charts. This is as good a performance as I've ever seen anywhere, hands down. I read a little about Eva today, what a tragic story. What a sweet gentle soul. Thank you Eva.
Back in the day I used to be a professional chess player and I would look at chess for hours on end with Rumours by Fleetwood Mac on repeat - it just really helped me to think and be creative. A couple of years ago I discovered Eva Cassidy and her version of Songbird - it just completely blew me away - what a hauntingly beautiful voice she has - there is nothing quite like it.
The fact that eva knew that she only had 10 months left on this earth in this video and she still managed to sing this song so flawlessly and effortlessly is beyond amazing
Absolutely blown away...So incredibly beautiful. Somehow I had missed this angel up until now. Her voice was legendary. This is one of my very favorite songs of all time, and to hear it done like this is an incredible treasure. What a treasure this lady was :(
I was melancholy for days after hearing her story but I then thought that I should feel joy for having the privilege of hearing that splendid voice. I'm working on it.
If you think Autumn Leaves is a tired old standard, listen Eva’s version. She will break your heart all over again. Eva elevated every song she touched. ❤
I had the privilege of seeing this angel at Blue Alley. Her voice is that of an Angel and I will never forget how she moved my soul. No one ever has sung any of these songs as beautifully as Eva does. She makes me smile, breaks my heart and soul, and fills my soul with love and hope. Eva, thank you for sharing your music, voice, and love with all of us. I will listen to you until my dying day.
How does God allow me to breathe and takes her? She gave us all her gift. Thank you Eva. You always made my Mother smile. I can only hope you are at peace. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
After ALL the years, I STILL LOVE HER and MISS HER TREMENDOUSLY! Eva was the most wonderful person I've ever known! Miss the days in Georgetown with you...
I'm 56... Always trying not to listen to this... I always cry like a little baby... The song is brilliant. I will also cry like a sobbing idiot when Cyndi Lauper does it. Both women are/were fantastic!
I'm 58.. So what?? If you don't shed a tear, or 3, when listening to Eva Cassidy, you have a Soul-problem!!! It is totally acceptable to cry to any Eva Cassidy song!!
I am almost 64. I discovered Eva Cassidy when I was 45. I return again and again. Webster's should put her picture in for the definition of: magnificent.
This is the best version of this song - no contest. She's so flawless. I never had the privilege of seeing her live, so I'm grateful she recorded her live sessions. Eva Cassidy is on my list of top 5 all time singers/songwriters .... in no particular order because I could never choose.
My gawd, this is still my favorite rendition of this song. I remember falling in love with it as a teenager in the 90s. She really pierces your soul with this song. Thank you, Eva! And thank you to the one who uploaded this video!
Eva transcends music, this speaks of eternal grace, the greatest musicians in the world would give anything to have this kind of expression. Beyond words, beyond thought, beautiful.
Sometimes, you wander through You Tube and there's a moment of grace . This is one of these .

Nino Romanazzi once or twice a week I bring Eva up on UA-cam. Always a tear and more will fall: “ time after time “.
Her singing makes me full of emotions.......
Kate Wolf also taken too early.
What happened to her??
@@lisahess1373 Eva died of cancer
Her voice is so pure, strong, and beautiful.
And it comes right out of the core of her being.
Listen to any of the songs she performed, and
you will find yourself in tears.
Eva, you are sorely missed.
Truly great singer...
So incredibly beautiful and emotionally powerful.
One of the most painful aspects of life is being ALIVE when amazing people you care about die. That grief cannot be described or talked about in any way that gives justice to the depth of the experience. But music helps, especially when it's performed by someone as amazing Eva Cassidy was.
sorry for your loss :(

I went to Walmart today, and looked for her
cd,and could not find it. when I heard her
voice I knew she was the most talented
female vocalist I have ever heard. such a shame. she will always be my supper
star.
Eva's got my heart.
Cannot agree with you more. Beautifully said.
January 2020. Her interpretations of classics are classics in their own right. An angel's voice. Fleetwood called her pure. He was right.
Her versions are better interpretations of the song than the originals. Linda Ronstadt had the same ability to take a song to another level
You left us too soon, Eva... Thank you for your gift.
@@robinhosleftfoot
Thats a matter of perspective, Im here listening because what she did is so beautiful, every song she touches is incredible, but all her best bits are other peoples songs. I love Eva but the untrained, slightly gritty version by the writer Cindy Lauper, is equally as good, and depending on my mood, sometimes better, there is more than a beautiful voice.
@@jimallen9442 👍
@@jimallen9442 I find it absolutely absurd that one has to have written a song for a performance to be judge in the top echelon. Such a sad misguided arbitrary qualification.
There's Aretha and this woman...everyone else get in line behind. I've been a musician for 47 years....the last 30 in Nashville as a picker and recording engineer. I've recorded dozens of the best singers music has to offer...this woman was so far out in front of the pack it's almost unfathomable. Her mastery of her vocal instrument was amazing.
BloozeDaddy
Agreed!!!
@@melodyscamman244 SHE MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN A SONGWRITER.....BUT SHE MADE EVERY COVER TOTALLY HER OWN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well Blooze...I know you know it was her soul. She lived the songs from within...to the outside. She lived them. And died much too soon. Maybe, as a result. Maybe.
My baby girl was born two days ago to this song. Her name? Cassidy ❤❤
Beautiful
Strange how she is seldom mentioned as one of the greatest female vocalists.
Great she was...commercial she wasn't...money talks.
They couldn’t make money on her so they look elsewhere for 💰 !
Not by those who have heard her sing.
@@MrJOHNMICHAELVEGA I don't understand why not. She's incredibly talented.
When God blesses someone with talent at Eva's level, I pray they don't sell their soul just like Eva didn't.
Found this song through Smallville of all things when I was a teenager. Still listening. Incredible performance, incredible lady. Taken before her time.
So did I
Me too! Loving the soundtrack of Smallville ❤
the voice of an angel and singing with them GOD BLESS YOU EVA
Finally, a cover that reduces it down to a pure version, so many people oversing or put in random dynamics, but she nails everything here and makes changes in places that are appropriate and tasteful. This is how you cover a song
My goodness this is the most beautiful sound I’ve heard in a long long time. Crying
Beautiful cover
Hey dont cry my dear peace be with you always ✌🕊🙏
This is literally what perfection sounds like. This live version is even better then the recorded version Eva did. It literally blows my mind that this woman never had her big time moment in life. She’s literally timeless as an entertainer and I always some how find myself coming back to listen to her time after time.
I'm 71...it's 2024...just adore her voice ❤
In 2024...I'm here...in about 70 days I will be 70 years...
I am unlikely to see 2025, I'll pass on your lovely messages to Eva.
2024-I’m soon to be 71. What a gem!
She had an amazing ability to create space through her genius timing. Listen to her use of vocally coming in on upbeats vs. downbeats, and drawing out space in between but always landing where it matters most. You can't teach that.
Yes this perfectly encapsulates her sonic capabilities
Beautifully said!
This 👏
Well said. Memorably said.

67. Time after time also.
Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick and think of you
Turning in circles confusion is nothing new
Flashback to warm nights
Almost left behind
Suitcase of memories,
Time after sometimes you picture me
I'm walking too far ahead
You're calling to me, I can't hear what you have said
And you say go slow
I've fallen behind
The second hand unwinds
If you're lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you I'll be waiting
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you I'll be waiting
Time after time
Time after time
After your picture fades and darkness has turned to gray
Watching through windows I'm wondering
If you're okay
And you say go slow
I've fallen behind
The drum beats out of time
If you're lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you I'll be waiting
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you I'll be waiting
Time after time
Time after time
Mmm, time after time
Ooh, time after time
Time after time
After your picture fades and darkness hás turnesd tô Gray...help
Thanks a Lot!
Every song I've heard her sing is as close to perfect as you can get. She always put her soul into it. This is no exception. I'm so glad she was with us even though she left too soon.
Eva's voice seemed to sing for everyone.
2021 and she still brings tears. A voice that I will never forget..
I tear up every time I listen to her. Such an amazing individual. RIP. Voice of an angel
You are so right! She just gets to your heart and soul and brings those feelings out of you that you thought you had forgotten. Bittersweet.
u will but your descendants will hear it on your funeral making it live on
Not only does she have a beautiful voice with nice control, what she does with the guitar is brilliant too.
"If you're lost, you can look and you will find me.. Time after time"
This is so true about your music, Eva. Rest in Peace. What a phenomenal talent.
I first became
aware of her in 1998. Just an incredible songstress. Her voice always made me think that, deep down inside, she
knew she was not long for this earth. It’s that touch of melancholy you hear in everything she sings. It’s there. I do
think she knew. God bless her for giving us what she did, and rest easy, Eva.
You have expressed perfectly what I have often felt about Eva.
Did she know she was “Terminal” during this performance?
Russell Brown ~ She was not well at this point, at least as I remember it, but may not have been aware she had terminal cancer. At least, she had not been
officially informed. But when you hear and watch her live “Over The Rainbow,” it’s impossible not to feel she was already on another trajectory and that
she somehow knew that. It is so other worldly and beautiful, it’s as if she were tapping into that other layer of consciousness. But that’s just me ...
Larry Power Well said. I was just curious.
One of the single purest voices I have ever heard. Gone way too soon.
Agreed
@ Ken: Agree!
Singing with the angels now!
"Those who are loved by the Gods are taken early".
@Mike RL watch yankee arnold 4 minute yt vid on being saved - you'll see eva again if you do
Searched for "Time after Time" because I needed a lullaby before bed after a very long hard day.
Have you heard her versions of Songbird and Fields of Gold?
Back in the day I used to be a professional chess player and I would look at chess for hours on end with Rumours by Fleetwood Mac on repeat - it just really helped me to think and be creative. A couple of years ago I discovered Eva Cassidy and her version of Songbird - it just completely blew me away - what a hauntingly beautiful voice she has - there is nothing quite like it.
As a parent.. I want this song to be played at my funeral for the comfort of my children.
I feel like she is really saying this to me
I keep thinking I've heard the best Eva Cassidy song.
Then i hear another.

Truly the voice of an angel.
The fact that eva knew that she only had 10 months left on this earth in this video and she still managed to sing this song so flawlessly and effortlessly is beyond amazing
I just found this channel, I didn’t realize this was back in the 90’s…My heart breaks but glad to have heard her.
Every day…. 🙂✌️❤️🌎😎
THAT MIGHT BE THE EXACT REASON WHY SHE DID IT SO WELL, SHE WANTED TO LAST IT FOREVER!
She didn't know she was sick during this performance
Indeed a soul full of grace…
Blessing all who really…… hear her voice…
Gone to soon….💔
2022! In love with this version! Sounds like angel's performing...
Fantastic
Are you kidding me? Absolutely brilliant!! Thankfully we have her recordings. What a talent.
Absolutely blown away...So incredibly beautiful. Somehow I had missed this angel up until now. Her voice was legendary. This is one of my very favorite songs of all time, and to hear it done like this is an incredible treasure. What a treasure this lady was :(
Gee...thanks Sean ...it's beautiful, really...but I wanna cry now :(

I was melancholy for days after hearing her story but I then thought that I should feel joy for having the privilege of hearing that splendid voice. I'm working on it.
I was very sad too but I later realised that she will live forever and her voice will never leave heart. once you hear it, you will never let it go.
Amazing...
Surfing UA-cam and this is where my search ended...oh, my, this came to me like a ray of light on a dark day.
been in quarantine for almost 2wks. somehow i feel “ lucky” bc i nvr would’ve found this song or your genuinely kind comment . plz stay safe
No one ever has
sung any of these songs as beautifully as Eva does. She makes me smile, breaks my heart and soul, and fills my soul with love and hope. Eva, thank you for sharing your music, voice, and love with all of us. I will listen to you until my dying day.
What a blessing you got to hear Eva in person. ❤️
I’m here in 2024, sinking into this beautiful voice 💕
Of course her singing is entirely awesome, but her guitar work is magnificent as well.
So much beauty comes effortlessly from her. Sleep well, beautiful lady, we're still appreciating you down here.
Valion brilliant guitar work, brilliant everything.
I think of all the practice she must have put in. It's one thing to sing like that but to also play so competently is just outstanding.
Definitely. The timing, picking, and intricacies in every song are astounding.
Kudos to you for noticing that. It's flawless.
How does God allow me to breathe and takes her? She gave us all her gift. Thank you Eva. You always made my Mother smile. I can only hope you are at peace. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
