I'M 71 I have seen and listened to all types of music groups and singers, but this simply is the best performance I have ever heard, considering it was made in a club with none of todays modern production methods it is sheer genius by an angel who flew away far to soon. RIP Eva.
I read these comments and people feeling sad about Eva leaving us at such a young age...don't be sad people..99.9% of people born on this planet will leave no visible sign that they were ever here except they have passed their DNA on to a new generation. Eva didn't pass her DNA on, but she did leave a legacy that will mesmerise people for generations to come.
Great way to look at it. We all would like to leave a mark, but most are quickly forgotten. 24 years later I am enjoying her music. Wish I had found her sooner when she was alive. Typical artist that is more famous after gone, and she was a real artist.
From an interview with Doug MacLeod, who wrote Nightbird. Interviewer: Your songs have been recorded by many artists, so which are your favorite interpretations? Doug: I have a couple of favorites. One was Eva Cassidy’s version of Nightbird. That song is about a prostitute, a prostitute that I used to live with who really watched out for me. I have no idea if Eva Cassidy knew what that song was about and I never heard it until my wife played it for me during a drive to Los Angeles from San Luis Obispo. I’m a huge baseball fan and my team, the Cardinals from St Louis, were playing the Dodgers and I wanted to listen to the game. My wife said “I got something for you to hear”, and I said, “But the Cardinals are on” and she said “This is more important than the Cardinals” and she put this CD on of Eva Cassidy. I tell you, it moved me so much, I pulled over to the side of the road and I was weeping. I have never done that song again. When people ask me to do Nightbird, I tell them that if they want to hear THE version, she is the one to listen to. And then of course she died before I got a chance to meet her to ask her how she interpreted it like that.
I read Elton John said she had one of the three known perfect voices in the world. Her purity of tones and emotion bring me to tears more often than not.
@@MarkJohnson-zy4fd and Ann Murray, not to mention Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin who surpass everyone, albeit in a somewhat different style. Just my 2 cents.

Aretha’s still the top of my singer’s totem pole, but Eva is on the same rung, no question. It is amazing to hear.
@@larrypower8659 Aretha is amazing but lacks the tenderness, and thus the chill-evoking quality, for me at least. The first time I heard Eva it summoned Robert Flack's The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, that pure, unadorned, ethereal delivery of a vocal. That song undoubted influenced Eva's development.
@larry nash. Eva’s “Rainbow” is the best version ever, imho. Brings tears to my eyes every time. In fact, I can’t watch it that often because I get too emotionally involved. Truly amazing.
@quarter_moon and_a_guitar. The difference may be, Aretha sang more with the verve and energy of her personality and outlook on life. I’ve always felt Eva did the same thing but with that said, Eva’s outlook and personality seemed to be quite different from Aretha’s. The Queen of Soul was brash, supremely talented, and she knew what she wanted. Eva didn’t seem to want much of anything from her music, much less her career. Her singing seemed to come from a place of melancholy. You can always hear that touch of sadness in everything. It’s really that blue feeling we all get but Eva seemed to have it in spades. In music, we all play or sing who we are; it’s one the eternal truths of Art. Both of these fantastic ladies sang and played WHO they were. In Aretha’s catalog there are many instances of downright sad- ness and vulnerability, but that is certainly not what she was known for, nor did she want to be portrayed as such. Aretha experienced the prejudice of racism and misogyny (hope I spelled that right). She fought to rise above it, which is revealed in her music. Eva, I think, just wanted to BE. She showed who she was through her music and that was enough for her. It’s really kind of existential, not that either of them considered themselves “existentialist.” Lau Tzu, the Chinese philosopher, wrote that, “The way to do is to be, and the way to be is to do.” We love both of these fantastic women of song. They WERE, and that’s all they needed to BE ... Stay safe and take good care, Mister 1/4 Moon.

I first heard her while I was sitting in a Starbucks, and Fields of Gold came on.I got chills, and asked the barista who was singing. She went and found out, then gave me the name of Eva Cassidy. I later found the CD Songbird in my dad's collection after he passed away, as well as a couple of her jazz CDs. I've listened to them all several times over. Never get tired of hearing her, and the music never gets old. Legendary talent, gone way too soon.
I found my home, my favorite songs sung by a voice so incredible it will make the angels sit down and weep. God must have wanted her in heaven for all our loved ones who passed to hear her as their reward.
This hit straight to my heart with enough tears to fill the Mississippi River perhaps it was 20 years over due. My last live performance on Beale Street at Silky O Sullivan's and then over to BB Kings. This is the song I last sang in 1995 I had lost my biggest fan my little 10 yr old son in a tragic accident and felt that was the day the night bird flew away and took my little boy to perhaps sit down and meet the man in the moon (yes every time I watch a movie with the little fishing off the moon I smile and think of my son). I walked away from singing that night after Beale Street and have never been back to visit the Blues on Beale until right now I have always been a fan of Eva Cassidy but never knew she sang this song until tonight it popped up my suggestions for music thank you UA-cam for the incredible moment you gave me.
Thank you Bryan McCulley for recording all these magical performances by Eva. I can't even imagine what privilege it was to actually be there in person, but if I close my eyes I feel like Eva is singing next to me for me and me alone.

+Theo Lamp It just sucks that most music these days is either so overproduced or full of auto tune. I'm sorry but not even Adele can hold a candle to Eva plus all of her songs are depressing. At least Eva was so versatile in whatever she sang which was both a good and bad thing...bad in that record companies didn't know how to market her because she refused to be put in a box and good because she refused to give in even if it meant losing a record deal.
+peaceloveerin100 - As you said, most music. But, there are still great singers out there. We have pick & choose (as we have always had to do)those who fit within our musical taste. Here are a few from some of the talent shows: Dorota Osinska, Celia Pavey, & Janet Devlin - check out their 1st auditions. Also, Stacey Kent (check out her cover of landslide) & a band called Delta Rae (check out Bottom of the River or Dance in the Graveyards). I'm not saying any of them are the equal of Eva. But, they are all pretty good. Enjoy, Ted
+peaceloveerin100 Lots of very high quality singers out there today but very few if any in Eva's class IMO here are a few: Ruth Moody and the The Wailin' Jennys, Mary Fahl (former lead singer of October Project), Patty Griffin, Loreena McKennitt, Amanda Marshall.
. Nightbird lyrics by Doug MacLeod Some old hotel room in Memphis I see the city through the rain I'm just chasing me my time And rememberin' some pain You see, there once was a boy And on the street he'd surely die And the nightbird took him in And she taught him how to fly See the nightbird softly fly Why do she fly alone? Is the moonlight just a flame For her memory? Now she's gone Two bit bars and honky tonks Any pleasure can be found You can get just what you want If you lay your money down Loney sailors do their drinking My, my, my how the brave men do die And the nightbird sells her pleasures Bringing tears to my eyes See the nightbird softly fly Why do she fly alone Is the moonlight just a flame For her memory? Now she's gone…

Found myself with a tear slowly falling as I heard her sing. That's just plain ole God given talent pouring out of her soul.
I can plan to listen to a song or two of Eva's songs, and easily end up listening to more and more and hours have gone by. Breath taking, often find myself with welling tears not of grief but of awe and being touched by her heart filled songs.

Yes that exactly what happens when I listen to Eva, one angelic voice
RIP Angel
I'm so very happy I came across the wonderful woman with such a beautiful voice. She's most definitely one of my favorites.
AVE Eva Cassidy, love you so much, like never before.❣
Truly the songbird....
I listened to the two discs of Nightbird today. Greatest one night performance of any singer ever recorded.
So agree
props to the guitarman... very fine solo. Helluva band behind this great singer.
I was listening. First rate!
His name is Keith Grimes... damn fine playing
@@laylahofficial Agree 👍
For her memory now, she's gone. You are an angel, eva.
One of my favourites is "Nightbird" but everything she did was beautiful.
The Man who wrote this Never sang it again after he heard Eva doing it. THAT SAYS IT ALL! Never heard a Voice so touching and Never will do again. A pure Goddess. And Props to the Band aswell.
Even more, he wrote the song about his life. He was the young man taken in by the Nightbird. Yet, now, when asked to play it, he tells them that's Eva's song now.
Who is the man that wrote it? What a treat their paths crossed! A great heart can share with others.. ✨

Doug MacLeod
...
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug_MacLeod_(musician)
Interview with the writer of the song, Doug Macleod:
Alan: Your songs have been recorded by many artists, so which are your favourite interpretations?
Doug: I have a couple of favourites. One was Eva Cassidy’s version of Nightbird. That song is about a prostitute, a prostitute that I used to live with who really watched out for me. I have no idea if Eva Cassidy knew what that song was about and I never heard it until my wife played it for me during a drive to Los Angeles from San Luis Opisbo.
The other song of mine that I think was a great version was Albert Collins doing Working Man Blues. It’s on his Cold Snap album and I think he just nailed it.
Here I am 5 years later still listening to Eva and will forever. Beautiful tragic loss. 'For her memory now she's gone' That nightbird and songbird still lives on through her music. Rest in peace beautiful talented Eva. You were a jewel.x
Who's listening right now? October 2019
I am but why is that information important to you? :/
Me, in Argentina!!
Rochester , NY
Amen! Albania.
Aye Matig-a we have been listening to this beauty for years...never gets old.
I lost my mom 2 months ago and she always listened to Eva Cassidy "People Get Ready"... Im always getting tears when i hear her beautiful voice!
Sorry to hear about your mum and your English is perfect
Erik Höggren
People who care to read, will understand each and every word. They read with the heart......
Sorry, never a good time to lose your mum.
Sorry for your loss. Your Mom must have been super special. She got to hear Eva while she was still with you. Now she gets to hear her All The Time. What a Blessing.🙏🏾🕊♥️
I’m sure this amazing talented beautiful soul is still singing up there with the angels. I can only think that God wanted her to come back home because he missed her so much. 🙏🏼🇬🇧
What an angel - so sad she's no longer with us - I could listen to her 24/7
I'm 61 now. I feel Eva Cassidy's music, every aspect of it, emotion, delivery, true essence of her notes, and certainly her sweetness will be part of my last decade or perhaps 2 Lord willing.
to have found this wonderful lady has helped me cope with ptsd.....in 2017 we have fires..floods...hurricanes .....people in authority who are morons puttin divisions in everyones life.....the only way to cope i have found is to be purified by the sweetest angelic voice i have ever heard and i do believe music does and can heal a weary soul........
we was havin' such a nice moment didja' really have to drag politics into this? R.I.P. Eva Cassidy
Brenda Jackson: I got you ... a nice christmas season and a Happy New Year as well as beautiful music along all the way to you.
AGREE!!!! EVA ANGEL WENT HOME! THANK YOU EVA.
wow! me too! and i actually got to sing song with her! we did WILD HORSES together one night but she just blew me away so just did harmony on higher regisiter! it was so cool! and she was just one of the guys always! it was amazing to me because i could see her genius but she was so humble grateful for what it was we had then--back then we could have Emily lou Harris or Bonnie Raitt for instance but Eva kicked them all out of the box--one night at the Childe Harold bar at DuPont Circle emily lou did her set and Springsteen was there and Eva just picked up the guitar and blew everyone away! what fun! but sad today cause shes gone
@@douglasfarrow8109 Was any of this recorded?
As amazing as Over the Rainbow and Fields of Gold are, I think this one is just as special and underrated
Yes, I think it's the best.
So do I! I love 💕 this song and Eva!!!
So do I...absolute class...
This is the BEST!!!
My #1
I first heard her while I was sitting in a Starbucks, and Fields of Gold came on.I got chills, and asked the barista who was singing.
I know her voice, but when she starts singing the beauty and feeling startles me every time.
I really can't believe this, just listen to the production, it is perfect, Eva Cassidy, it makes me want to cry, the pure genius, lost to us.
I found my home, my favorite songs sung by a voice so incredible it will make the angels sit down and weep. God must have wanted her in heaven for all our loved ones who passed to hear her as their reward.
Smiles, hello Diane 🌺
You were taken from us far too soon , I think you are in heaven now . God bless you
As she did for so many already wonderful songs, she "owns" this one and then gladly gives it to us for free so wonderfully. True talent.
Stunning
Condolences.🥺 Now our Songbird can sing to him All The Time.🕊
Thank you Bryan McCulley for recording all these magical performances by Eva. I can't even imagine what privilege it was to actually be there in person, but if I close my eyes I feel like Eva is singing next to me for me and me alone.
I just discovered Eva Cassidy a couple days ago. She is stunning. Her voice covers the full specter of music and the beauty of it... stunning.
Same here. First time to listen to her singing this song. Amazing
First time I heard the live album, she changed my life.... Too short a life.....
When Eva does a song, consider it done. Her flawless delivery has rarely been equalled and never surpassed. A true musical genius and a voice that will echo through the ages to come.
Une pure merveille
Merci Eva
Tu me berce tu as bercé mon chéri avant qu'il ne rejoigne son père céleste
J'espère qu'il te rencontre...
Comme j'espère aussi le faire au moment voulu
Pas de tristesse
Juste un excellent partage
Là où tu es
i just found Eva... didn't even know she flew away. now i'm sad. but i'm glad i found her. God, thank You, for Eva Cassidy and her beautiful voice and her music. may she be resting in Your Perpetual Light.
You can feel her voice!! What an incredible instrument she was!!
Corina Taylor nice way to describe Eva.It is unexplainable ,I have tried :)
Everytime she hits that high note, it sends chills down my body.
Not to take away from Eva but she had some of the most talented musicians and sound grew with her. This includes Eva. How I wish I had been in that room.
best voice ever
Amen
What a voice God gave her....she used His gift well!!!!🥰🙏♥️
One of my favourite songs by her . She is the best vocalist that ever lived.
I am certain she is in Heaven and no longer in pain from the terminal cancer that took her from us much too soon. She was also an artist; I'm sure you can find some of her work online. Multitalented.....beautiful soul!
@@mstyblu2 You probably know this by now; but a couple of DJ’s in the UK (she was Very popular there) and Australia convinced her family to let them respectfully market her music. I think there are about 12 albums. I think if you Subscribe on uTube, or Google, you’ll be able to get ahold of some, if not or all, of her albums. Enjoy!🕊♥️
I listen to her when I take my furbabies for a ride and they just are so relaxed. They fall asleep
Amen she is one of a kind!
the guitar solo is one of the most touching ones i'v ever heard, and her voice takes me to heaven
It never ends here listening to her voice. Just so a temple of tears
Words could not explane.
So effortless... So incredible! Eva you were amazing and I weep that you are no longer with us. I know you are in Heavens Choir and I know I will get to see you someday! A Lady for the Ages!
To sing with such felling and in a small club wished i was there Fantastic.
I’m 42 years old and have listened to a lot of music of all genres. How have I not heard this lady sing until now? 🤷🏻♂️
This LADY makes my heart bleed. Reminds me of my ex of 30 years ."MAW " .⚘💔
I still LOVE HER so much & miss her to no end. .💔🙏⚘❤
Will always love you marcia ann williams your locked in my heart ,.🙏⚘❤💔
Wow. Yet another song in which the voice of an angel manages to bring me to tears. Thank you Eva, thank you to the team involved and and especially thank you to the dude who plays some of the most beautiful guitar soloing ever. XXXX
He surely does know how to play for the song, instead of his ego...
Music has always moved me emotionally to some degree, but Eva Cassidy's unfathomed vocal abilities profoundly affect and mesmerize me like no other. I'm forever grateful for Eva Cassidy and those who have preserved Eva's music!!!
Man. What a talent. What a soulful talent. Never be another like her. Just such a gift to listen to anything she sings.
Smiles, hello Maureen 🌺 😊
A truly beautiful and rare sound -, what a voice!, Sadly missed today but living on in our hearts
more amazing than anything is this is an unretouched live performance. there is no artist living or dead that compares. eva cassidy should be required listening..
This cuts right to your soul.
Smiles, hello Tina 🌺 😊
Eva you gave us something we today cherish, sorry you didn't feel the way you have left us now. Thank You.
This is an angel forever in my heart such a songbird.
Smiles, hi Linda 🌺 😊
When your happy you enjoy the music. When your sad you understand the lyrics ❤
Well put.😉
True❤
Why aren't there more singers like her? If only she was still here.
+peaceloveerin100 - I still always feel that Eva is still here. Whenever I see a post of her music, I always see comments that are within a week or so. People are discovering her music every day. That is her legacy. That is her gift to us. Best wishes, Ted
Enjoy, Ted
+Theo Lamp My other favorite singer is Martina McBride...very different from Eva but they're both special singers to me in so many ways.
There are no words....
Una voz maravillosa. Es un placer y un honor escucharla. Que lástima que se fuera tan joven. Gracias Eva. Descanse en paz.
SUPERB !!! UNIQUE !!!...

Nightbird
lyrics by Doug MacLeod
Some old hotel room in Memphis
I see the city through the rain
I'm just chasing me my time
And rememberin' some pain
You see, there once was a boy
And on the street he'd surely die
And the nightbird took him in
And she taught him how to fly
See the nightbird softly fly
Why do she fly alone?
Is the moonlight just a flame
For her memory? Now she's gone
Two bit bars and honky tonks
Any pleasure can be found
You can get just what you want
If you lay your money down
Loney sailors do their drinking
My, my, my how the brave men do die
And the nightbird sells her pleasures
Bringing tears to my eyes
See the nightbird softly fly
Why do she fly alone
Is the moonlight just a flame
For her memory? Now she's gone…
Kiitos!
Thank you man
This song brings tears to my eyes , " MAW " SEEM
This song brings tears to my eyes ,has to be about my ex of 30 years "MAW " STILL LOVE HER TOO !God do i miss her .⚘❤💔🙏
People get ready JESUS THE CHRIST is coming soon, Please as you can read Acts 2:38
The soul in her singing. Wow.
Eva should be in the Hall of Fame where she is the ONLY member. She's in a class all by herself. Eva Cassidy, I was not aware of you when you were alive... and I will regret that for the rest of my life.
Sweet Eva...can't ever get enough of this angel.
The candle that burns brightest 🔥 only burns half as long... RIP Eva. ⚘❤💯
She was a perfect singer. There are no words to convey how she makes the listener feel, especially those who are singers themselves. She inspires me so very much.
Smiles, hi Tara 🌺 😊
The tone of Eva’s voice is so gorgeous.
Damn such a great song and an amazing voice
Gone to soon
