Just, wow. To sing the ways she's singing and play the changes she was playing on guitar at the same time, that was just incredible. What an unfathomable loss to the music world.
Eva, mark my words. Your music will take the world by storm just like you have taken me. How can anyone deny your amazing abilities that you graced us with. Thank you to your family for letting the world hear and see your many talents. Now i can't imagine life without your song. I love you,Babygirl!
Eva and her guitar are together as ONE in this amazing performance!!! Not only does she sing flawlessly while strumming a barrage of complicated Blues/Jazz chords, but she also nonchalantly controls the volume of her guitar and vocals in multiple ways to blend the two together. Notice how she uses seven different strumming techniques while playing the guitar. She lowers the string's volume by using the fleshy part of her thumb and fingertips when she's singing at a low or normal volume (0:20) (0:43), but when she needs emphasis, guitar string brightness or volume to match her vocal prowess, she strums with her fingernails (2:25). Several times, as if she's holding a pick between her thumb and index finger, she uses just her index finger's fingernail as the pick to provide control and volume (2:35). Plus, she fingerpicks individual and multiple strings with her thumb and all her fingers (1:06) (1:46). And lastly, she muffles or quickly deadens the strings with her fingers and palm for emphasis and to reduce the guitar's interference with her vocals (1:04). She also uses similar volume control techniques with her voice, such as feathering the lyrics with her breathing or with a falsetto. Plus, she's constantly changing her distance and angle to the microphone to balance the volume. Without a doubt, when you add her vocal skills to her guitar skills, she's the greatest singer/guitar player I've ever heard, but between the two, it's her unimaginable, Heaven-Sent voice and singing ability that touches my soul like no other artist ever has!!!
I started singing in church before I can remember. In bands for most of my adult life. I can't listen to Eva much - she makes me cry, & people think I'm nuts. I sing this with her - a few octaves difference, but hey... - now for note. If I could just find someone to play it...
@@AlanCheek Hat's off to ya, Alan!!! You're one fine singer, and I'm right there with you on that tearing-up part when listening to Eva. Can you imagine Eva singing this in Church? ua-cam.com/video/Af8GtuhXlSw/v-deo.html
@@twisterwiper Thanks, Twisterwiper! Been playing the guitar on and off for three decades and singing for about two years. I love seeing and hearing a master at either one. Stick with Eva Cassidy. She's the Holy Grail of Vocalists/Musicians!
Amazing! oh my, the phrasing, the subtleties... she was pure genius. Such a joy to hear this rarity. I wish someone would have captured every single note she ever sang in her too-short lifetime. Timeless...
Agree 100%. Many of us would pay large sums of money to hear her practice and demo tapes. I played behind dozens of super talented singers onstage and in the studio, but Eva is on another level from every other singer who ever lived. Maybe two or three levels above. It's absolutey insane how talented she was. A genius, really, who never knew it.
If you want a slice of Heaven while on this Earth, let this infuse your soul…it is literally a piece of musical perfection , the extraordinary vocals and very challenging and superbly played guitar ! Eva at her very very best! God given pure talent !
From the most touching and sensitive interpretation and arrangement of 'Over the Rainbow' and 'Autumn Leaves' to this and then 'You Take my Breath Away' is justa breath-taking display of her range and versatility. I have become totally obsessed with Eva Cassidy to the point that I listen to her, literally, day and night.
I just discovered her today, 4th of July, 2016 while I was looking for a good version of "How Can I Keep From Singing." Hers is the most soulful by far!
I've been obsessed since 2001 my friends and colleagues refer to me as "Eva Cassidy" and I'm a guy. Also there was a time Laura Bligh's website has a quiz to test fans of knowledge and she has broken it down to light, medium and difficult for the highly fanatic fans. I swear this, I told my office colleague to ask me the difficult set of questions on the spot without knowing what the questions were to test if I'm that obsessed. It has 10 questions and I answered 8 of them correctly.
This almost brings tears to my eyes. It's such a pleasure to see her so completely relaxed and lost in the music and to give such a humble thank you at the end. What a beautiful person she must have been.
Have only recently "discovered" Eva, and am so saddened that she died 20 years ago. Tremendous talent. I"m completely mesmerized by her vocals and guitar playing. Awesome talent that is so sorely missed. RIP Lovely Lady!
Truly, thank them for her, period. ♡ it was love at first sight for me I have adored he voice since the early 90s. What a lovely gift she gave, the spirit & soul that she so generously conveyed blessed my heart immeasurably. What a joy to hear her & feel that genuine love. I So wish she was still here
Just when you think you have heard Eva sing it all something new is released and you sit in utter amazement at the raw, polished talent that dripped from the lady. Rest in eternal peace Eva
The most beautiful singing voice ever. Nobody could convey emotion like she does in a song and that pureness you just can't buy it . She was an angel this one !
She took a song I love, turned it a whole different way, and made it better. You don't just listen to Eva Cassidy's music, you experience it and life is better.
Just write down the lyrics and read them as she interprets them. One thinks. She is telling a story, and whatever the story , you know exactly how the character is feeling. Everything comes from the heart.
Bob, I am in complete agreement. Since hearing her "Autumn Leaves" two years ago, music has changed for me: music before Eva and music after. She was a pure voice and spirit, not to mention an accomplished guitarist. I truly love her, as she makes me a better person with every song. I am as big an enthusiast as can be for the one and only Eva.
Besides a beautiful voice, she could also really play the guitar, 6 and 12 string. I found this entertaining just to watch her playing the guitar in this song. What a beautiful, talented woman she was.
Agreed! She played guitar from an early age and it shows. Her voice is sweet, but can also be a little haunting when she wants it to be, a great talent. RIP Eva, we love you and miss you.
You have just watched the finest, most talented singer/guitar player ever in this world, and she made it look easy!!! If you think otherwise, I dare any singer/guitar player or singer/what-ever-instrument-player to sit down and match Eva Cassidy note for note OR out-match her in a variety of in-tune notes on this song and post it on UA-cam for comparison. But first, have a listen to a few versions of this song on UA-cam by some of those considered to be this century's most popular singers: McCartney, Clapton, Joplin, Peter Paul & Mary, etc. etc. Let the competition begin...
Every time I watch I'm more amazed at this performance. Effortless, flawless, soulful rendition of a challenging vocal and instrumental piece. Then she's so modest and sweet about it at the end after she absolutely nailed it--smiles and shyly says "thank you." She runs this classic song through the amazing "Eva filter" to create a totally unique interpretation. Rare combination of genuine humility and once-in-a-generation talent. She is really something.
Love that someone else caught the Lenny Williams comment about Eva's genius, and how her backup musicians would wait for her to put a tune through the Eva Filter to see what she would do with it. My gosh, she is my favorite interpreter ever, and it's not even close.
Eva sings so soulfully beautiful "San Francisco Bay Blues" with her fantastic guitar music playing! Eva was so talented with her God gifted lovely angel singing voice!💙🎸😍
Amazing, what an outstanding talent! Throw away the bad news every evening on television, show people like Eva and positive songs like "What a wonderful world!"
What a gift to be able to both watch and listen to Eva sing. It's overwhelming enough just to listen to her... and then to see her also. Deepest gratitude to everyone that has helped preserve and present her work.
PHEWWWIEEE! What beautiful chords and sounds!!! It would be one thing to be able to sing to this standard and another thing to play to this standard. To do both together shows a supreme talent.
Blessings be upon ye for posting this fantastic video of Eva! With mad skills on the guitar, and a voice for the ages, Eva always delivered master performances! This is a little slice of heaven!
Thanks for posting this never before seen footage of her!She was the most expressive singer with such an unique voice that touches me deeply , everytime again!A shame that she wasn't popular during her lifetime! However....Eva's voice is immortal!
Although she was glorious in whatever genre she tackled, I think the blues and jazz is where she shined the most. RIP to one the greatest voices of any generation, Eva Cassidy.
Donnie Darko Agreed. She's more able to let her creativity shine. But then again, she does it in every single song. I've never heard an artist be able to cover so many genres, and do it efforlessly.
I think she was equally good and expressive with ballads. Fields Of Gold, Autumn Leaves, Time After Time, Nightbird, Tall Trees in Georgia, Over The Rainbow. And those are just the ones from the double live Nightbird album. But then there's her incredible body of work with folk songs. She was great at EVERYTHING.
I was listening to Somewhere over the rainbow and someone said in a comment "Eva Cassidy", so I went to Eva Cassidy singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Never went back. I now own everything she recorded that I can get my hands on. What a gift she was. I collect vinyl but I couldn't get a copy of Method Actor before they recalled them back home. There was some great stuff there but Eva didn't like it. I can respect that, but it would have been nice. I did buy it on CD though.
I am now in the habit of looking for Eva singing stuff I don't particularly like, just to see what she can do with it. She never ceases to amaze me! She performs songs I could never listen to to the end when other people do them, and she makes them sound so glorious I have to play them over and over again. There was never before a talent like Eva's, and there probably never will be again.

Like Salt Rock Shakers so astutely explained below Eva was a master musician. Her guitar playing is impeccable and she has a golden voice. Her enunciation is crystal clear so the story in the song is told. Her solo performance of this song is a real "how to" study for solo performers. Play the guitar - don't bang it. Use dynamics in the song. Let the song breathe. Blend the guitar with the vocals and the vocals with the guitar. From the mother of pearl inlay on the headstock it looks like she's using a Guild. And from other information I found out she used a Guild Songbird. Guild guitars can have an almost piano like tone when they're played well and she knew how to play it.
Wow, she deserved much more than the meagre applause she received at the end of the song. She turned the original and every cover on its head, not that the original was bad, it was written to be played up tempo, but Eva changed the game on this rendition.

Some of the finest vibrato and high-low transitioning I have heard in a vocalist. She is never out of key. Spot on. Wow.
Just, wow. To sing the ways she's singing and play the changes she was playing on guitar at the same time, that was just incredible. What an unfathomable loss to the music world.
This videotape was recorded by Eva's friend Bryan McCulley in 1994. We all owe a debt of thanks to Bryan for the opportunity to see Eva perform.
