This is the first time I've heard Eva Cassidy, and I'm so glad I've finally discovered her! She lives on through her music, and is still touching peoples lives. What an amazing musician and artist!
I’m sitting next to my sister who is dying of cancer, she is taking her last breaths, I’m playing this song to her as I hold her hand. Go softly beautiful sister❤
This was not recorded in a musically mastered sound studio. It was a raw performance with only her to accompany herself. And it’s pure heaven. It’s also unequaled.
Along with her stellar vocal performance, Eva played the guitar masterfully. Every breath, every nuance, every dynamic swell, is positively breathtaking. She OWNS this song, and just about every other song she covered. Amazing!!!
It’s now 2021, I am a an old man of 63 and this makes me cry every time I hear it. I pray that she knows how much people still love her music. Rest In Peace Eva.
When I first heard this it touched something deep inside of me. I was and still am mesmerized by her singing so checked her name out only to find that she passed away.. Such a loss, such a Beautiful soul !!!
I'm 60 in two weeks. It's march 2024. Quality never dies. I play guitar and piano and sing. I adore music. This voice is of an angel. Who couldn't listen to it. Don't ever care what people say about your taste in music. ❤️🎸🎹💋
I hope that you had a nice 60th birthday. I hope you got to enjoy either playing or listening to your favorite songs. That's really what it's all about in the end.
LOL!!! Eva Cassidy was a nobody who died a nobody. She will never be in Judy Garland's league. See, the song was written specifically for Garland, and one of the biggest reasons Garland's version, especially the original in "The Wizard of Oz," has such power is that we KNOW how Garland ended up. When she recorded the original at only 16, she had no idea how her life would turn out. We hear it nearly a century later, over 100 years after her birth, and we wish we could have been able to steer her clear from trouble. Cassidy's version is a dime-a-dozen version like all the other performers who have recorded a song that was written specifically for one person. It is a song that should never be recorded by anyone else than Garland. It is sacrilege.
Many singers have covered this song, and some have very beautiful renditions, but nobody sang this song more beautifully than Eva. When I listen to her singing, I think of all the beautiful songs we never got to hear her sing. She put meaning and feeling into the words with her powerful voice.
I graduated from high school with Eva and had the privilege of seeing her live before she died. So, so good. An amazing talent and also a very humble and sweet lady. A tragic loss....
I had a dear friend use this for her Celebration of Life . She, too, passed from cancer. They both shared their beautiful talents and left too soon to become stars 🌟 looking down over us. ❤
My classically trained piano teacher always said the most beautiful instrument is the natural human voice singing the most meaningful songs. And Eva Cassidy was a prime example.
I'm 70 years old. I don't cry. I was with both of my parents when they died. I never cried. Men don't cry, right? I cry every time I listen to this angel...
@@sherryherrick6567 So very sorry to hear of the loss of your husband; I too, serious losses In the last two years...my mom, brother and best friend...so very painful...we can just hope they are over that Rainbow. My deepest condolences!! 💔🙏🌷
I lost my bright and beautiful daughter Jessica Marie to cancer at age 25. The day of her memorial service was one of heavy rain and gusty winds. But then a hour or so after I was home the storm passed, the skies began to clear, and in the East there was a perfect unbroken rainbow, and in the West, a orange sunset. Yes, it may have been a coincidence, but I want to believe that it was a sign that after a difficult life my "little girl" had reached a safe harbor. My wish for Eva Cassidy is that she too did the same. RogerC 01/09/2015
Wow. I'm very impressed. Heh, she is one by far and always will be my favorite singers. She is bright and she is a star. That's very sad that she suffered of cancer. And it was very hard for her to go through cancer and she was a singer. I mean I don't know how hard that would be pushed to her being um; a singer and going on stage and then, not making it. People were counting on her. As well as my grandpa age: 73 tough going through dementia. So, I fell horrible. I'm sorry for your lost :).
It is the day after Thanksgiving, 2023 and I am 78 and still her singing brings so much joy to me - so glad we can enjoy her beautiful soulful voice - RIP Eva
Melon drops, where they, will find me.....us.....I'm struggling with just hidden illness....eupd mental health xx I'm here for others though, I'm homeless 48?? Crying on street....I'm a secretary...was but I'll survive for my five relatives xxxxx mummy 74, 🫂
It's February 2024. I listen to Eva often. A good friend introduced me to her in early 2000's. Her covers are simply amazing. This one is one of my favs❤
God Bless you Eva, I pray that you are now joyous, happy and free over the rainbow. I was diagnosed with cancer on May 1st, 2023. This song takes on a deeper meaning for me now. Eva, maybe we will meet over the rainbow, I'll bring my guitar. ❤
I pray things are going well for you. She was amazing and I totally understand your connection. I’d just like to tell you to check out the research of Thomas Seyfried, Ph.D. It may help. God speed!
Lost my 40 year old son to a sudden heart attack on January 2, 2021. Every time I hear Eva's version of this song (and I play it quite often), tears roll down my cheeks, thinking of Brad. A great, caring and loving kid who had so much more to give on his personal and professional journeys.
My husband of 50 years is dying of Parkinson's in a nursing home & I can't be with him because of strict COVID protocols. You may find this UA-cam video of comfort-Israel Kamakawiwo'ole 'Over The Rainbow'. Grief unites us, wherever we are. Greetings from Canada.
So sorry for your loss. What a shocking end to a young life. You created him, he is part of you so he can never be far from you. Talk to him. Crying is cathartic. He knows 💕
Back in about 2004 my Bostonian friend, whom was very familiar with her and her story, told me about her in a ridiculously late night transatlantic phone call, keeping this Londoner awake till almost 2am...a few days later a package of CDs arrived and I spent the next week walking around in almost constant tears from not only, the incredible sadness, but the almost, ethereal, beauty of her voice...
I am still listening in 2024! This was my good friend Vickie's favorite song, and she passed in 2022 from pancreatic cancer. I miss her and this song brings her close to me. We listened to it together many, many times.
I have now entered a strange world, having "discovered" Eva Cassidy. And I cannot help but feel that, having heard her sing, I have been allowed to be initiated into a secret club. A club that has its meetings in a place where only real music plays. She is sadly gone from this world, but like so many others who have been touched by her musical purity, I will always be able to hear her in my heart. I will never hear music the same way again. Thank you Eva.
Me too. There is something (feeling-understanding) that opens up a bit more and we are more grateful because of Eva's club. I bought her, greatest hits album download, right away even though I am a member of a couple music sites. The next thing I did was to email my daughter and my sister with links to UA-cam of Eva. I find myself looking up to let her know that I love her and thank you.
My beloved wife passed away last November .We were together for 57 wonderful years. and Eve Cassidy so appropriately captured the emotions with her wistful rendition of Over the Rainbow. Margaret, please rest in peace my love. Dick
Bless you, Dick. I lost my first husband in a November. There is no explaining it to anyone who has never been through such an experience. May you have that peace that passes all understanding.
THIS is the version. THIS ONE. Yes Judy Garland started it, BUT, IMO, THIS is the gold standard version. Eva, we lost you too soon. A diamond from my hometown DC area. The greatest, IMO. I miss you. You live on in your music, but I miss you. RIP songbird.
perfection. How beautiful. My comments are invisible for some reason. However, my replies can be seen. And so, yes, This is so wonderful... She was a star.
I have a heart and I find this performance overwhelming. Perfection. I've also commented before and my comments appear to be invisible. UA-cam is a bit weird. I don/t trust it.
Karen Carpenter is my all time favorite singer, but I must say that noone comes even close to singing Over The Rainbow better than Eva Cassidy...NOONE!❤
I discovered Eva last year. It is December 2023, and the world seems to be imploding with so much hatred and distrust of humanity. Listening to this perfect, pure angelic voice truly is the anecdote to life these days. I hope to be able to hear her voice in heaven someday, but until then, thank you Eva for transforming our lives and transporting us to a place of love, kindness, and peace. We miss your presence but will listen to your voice for an eternity. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
And I have just discovered her today. This song brings so many memories back and makes me cry. I have listened to this over and over. Rest in Peace Eva. ❤️
Beautifully written. Two weeks later...it's January of 2024 and I just discovered Eva and her beautiful music.. such talent and expression of her amazing craft.. One of the songs I have loved my entire life but her version makes my goosebumps have goosebumps! I am sure she is singing with the blue birds way up high. Rest in eternal peace...you were taken too soon but know your music lives on in our hearts! ❤
The first time I heard this was around 2003 lying in my bed as I woke in the morning and the radio alarm clicked on at the exact moment the DJ put this track on.... I lay there in the still morning listening to the song totally mesmerised as I had never heard it or Eva Cassidy before. Then the DJ announced who it was and that Eva Cassidy had been lost to cancer. I think this is one of the most poignant moments of my life.... it just goes to show why we are here - to leave a mark, wow did she ever.
I was standing in the kitchen as my husband was noodling around UA-cam when this came up. Everything just stopped. Tears started streaming down my face. I have never heard anything so beautiful. I dropped everything and just listened. Tears of pure emotion, not sad or happy, just everything. That incredible moment was years ago, but it still breaks my heart every time I hear it. Sheer perfection.
I was at the hospital when I first heard this 'over the radio' :-) Like yourself everything stopped. I asked the nurse afterwards if she knew the artist, and thankfully she did.
Ditto! It's probably 20 years since I first heard Eva sing this song, and it still gives me a chill down my spine every time I hear her sing it. A lot of those UA-cam views are from me.
4 years ago today, 4 January 2019, my wonderful wife, SYLVIA,, passed away, after suffering a severe stroke in 2011. I nursed her and loved her right through until her last breath. I often played Eva’s “Over the Rainbow” to her, and she would always smile back at me with a squeeze of her hand. This was the final tune at her funeral and will always be remembered. I am sure that we will all Meet Again ………..at the “End of the Rainbow. 💔
she was a gift to us all ,and sadly missed this beautiful lady we had the pleasure of in our life .bless you and your family on the sad loss of your dear one
My condolences, David, what a loving husband you were and it sounds like you and Sylvia were really lucky to have found each other. My very best wishes to you.
You aught to read Søren Kierkegaards "Either/Or", specifically “The musical erotic”. (Well, read the whole thing, actually) I have the privilege of being able to read it in the original language, but the English translation is rather good.. In this essay Kierkegaard argues for why it doesn't make sense to discuss who's "the best", because some are in a league above everybody else. Is Mozart "better" than Beethoven? Is Eva "better" than Aretha?? They are ALL "The Best".
🙏🏼Oh Brian, I'm so very sorry. I pray that the Lord holds you until you are with your beloved again. You will be with her again. She's with you each day and night. I'm very sorry. God bless you. X
My mom loved this song. She always said this was her favorite version. She died 11 years ago today and I play this song every year to remember her. Here's to you Mom. ❤
@@NelliePeralta now that I’ve heard it, me too. I lost my sister 2 days ago and my Mominlaw 5 days earlier - my sister in law recommended this song. Perfection.
I watch hundreds of vocal performances on UA-cam, but I always come back to Eva. I read that she hated this recording: she had a cold and thought she sounded bad. If she could only know now how much of an impact she has had on so many people. How many people have played this version of the song at funerals for loved ones. I'd like to think that somewhere, over the rainbow, she does know and she is happy. 💜💜💜
I played this for my wife Carmen's funeral service... Eva's beautiful voice and the words of this song and knowing my Wife Carmen like I do, this song and this version was my choice - because it's so beautiful....💔🙏
When I am sad and feel like no one knows how much I miss them I like to think if they could listen to Eva’s velvet touching heart felt rendition on anything she sang , they would know how I feel about each and everyone of them could feel the how much I miss them.
God, to have a cold and sing like this 🙌 So beautiful. And it allows us to express the longing for a less stressful and peaceful life, together again with all of those who've left us 🥲
This beautiful woman isn't just a singer. She's also a song interpreter. She makes you listen to all of her covers in a whole new light with deeper meaning. What a shame she was taken from us so soon. It seems she had so much more to share and accomplish. THANK YOU Eva for sharing your incredible gift with us.
Eva Cassidy is probably still one of the five best female singers in the world. Her father taught her how to play the guitar. And she wrote her own version of this song which is absolutely priceless. I have shared this song with so many people for them to achieve whatever they want to achieve. God bless your spirit in heaven. -.
I could not agree with you more! I’m still telling friends that don’t know about her. Then they wonder how could they have neverrrr known about this angel voice ❤
One microphone, one guitar, on one stage, with one stool and one incredibly talented performer! They will never be another Eva Cassidy. Rest with the angels Eva. You are one of them!
I'm a 72 yr old retired Air Force instructor pilot. I used to whack my students who make mistakes inside the aircraft. Here I am whacked by a pretty Lady who has such a pretty voice. Humbled !
I came here because I lost my brother suddenly on May 18, 2020. I saw a complete rainbow over the sky a week later. I'm sure it was a sign from heaven.
You should watch some of Judy Garland’s later live performances. There’s a deep melancholy that it’s impossible to not be moved to tears. In her case, her career had long been on the decline after her immense success, like an inverse of Eva who had her peak in popularity after she died. Eva sang of what could have been had she lived. Judy sang of what could have been if she’d made better choices during her life. Both were incredible talents with two very different, yet both beautiful, renditions of this song that is a signature song for both of them. Both are so heartbreaking to see them perform it..
I lost my 14 year old after a heart transplant and this bring tears to my eyes every time I listen to this. My son is my guardian angel after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019.
In some ways, you can't compare to Judy Garland's version. Judy sang it as a child, Eva sang it as an adult. But in a blind comparison, Eva wins. There are no songs that Eva couldn't make her own.
+Bob Crunch. Judy's version I feel is quite different in tone and feeling. I don't agree that Judy was a child when she sang it in Oz as she was actually 17 playing a much younger girl, although her version does have a maturity about it which belies her age. It wasn't a song I really liked until I heard Eva sing it with such feeling.
I don't know what is bringing my tears more...this gorgeous rendition or the bittersweet comments here. Life is so hard. What would we do without music to get us through? 🥺❤️🙏❤️
That’s very true. Eva was such an amazing singer. I covered ‘my heart will go on’ on my UA-cam channel. It is a very raw cover recorded on my phone. I would really appreciate if you viewed it. 🙏💫
She died 11 months after this recording…there is something soo deep going on here, much bigger than the song or the moment…a knowing that resonates to almost every human soul with an antenna to hear it. It is the beautiful call home…the exit from this painful place we call Earth…that sad release of life …the return and reunion to the Light…it’s oozing out of her and reminds us all someday we will do the same.
Sitting here listening, with tears streaming down my face. It’s rare to experience a song that reaches into your soul and touches your heart deeply, and this is one. Thank you Eva, there can be no greater legacy than the eternal gift of beautiful music. ❤️
@@user-pq3fn6ev3l just a few yrs ago, maybe 2-3? I still go to UA-cam to see the videos especially. Have purchased all cds of her music I can find, and hope they keep putting them out. Most that hear her, love it ad as touched forever. And I do get teary still with many of her songs.
I am so grateful her boyfriend thought it wise to capture and preserve her gift for eternity. Eva Cassidy doesn't just sing, she embodies emotion in sound.
We are lucky some one recorder her. From what I've read, she didn't think she was that good. She only played because she wanted to. I believe she worked in landscaping.
@@theresaloos1485 Could be. I just assumed she at one time had a relationship with her long time male friend that recorded her. Of course, " it doesn't matter anymore". Quite a remake of the Paul Anka tune wouldn't you say? Buddy Holly sings it like it's about transient puppy love. Eva Cassidy's version sounds more like the death of a long marriage.
I lost my mother recently, and Eva Cassidy was one of my mother’s favourite artists; her voice will forever bring memories and chills down my spine.. her voice is amazing.. I love you Mom! Until we meet again😢😢 ❤❤
So sorry for the loss of your mom 💔 This is exactly why I listen to Eva cassidy,, I lost my mom nearly 8 years ago and the tears still roll when I play songbird album, was my mom's favourite.. She always wanted a granddaughter and sadly she didn't get to meet my daughter, over the rainbow is her bedtime song ❤️
No complex riffs and runs, no super-high belting, no 30-second notes, no whistle tones, no fingers wiggling in the air, no head banging, no hair flipping, no swimming suits or Halloween costumes--just pure singing. Eva Cassidy--truly one of the greats.
Why do you felt the need to shade Mariah? Absolutely unnecessary! The two are amazing singers with their own uniqueness. Stop putting women against each other!
No disrespect BUT to me , Voices are like fruits ... each has its own flavor, scent and uniqueness, Your comment of being the "best" is sad.... in that you haven't "tasted" the other flavors. How does one compared an Apple to a lime? I sincerely respect your opinion though.
Truly amazing beautiful voice best rendition ever. No singer has touched my soul the way Eva did and still does.. I listen to her songs daily as much as I can.
I don’t get why people like this so much, it took a cheerful song from a classic movie and turned it into just another “wOw DeEp” song by holding every note for an eternity and playing it on acoustic guitar, it feels like a zombie, something uncannily similar to something good, but so so far from it, this person mangled a song into something only 14 year olds who want to sound deep and people grieving actually listen to
It’s now 2023, I am a man of 35 and this makes me cry every time I hear it. I pray that she knows how much people still love her music. Rest In Peace Eva. [See the top comment.]
Well said , I'm a 51 Yr old male and whether it's Eva's or Israel ( from Hawaii) version and it starts playing and I'm in company I have to take myself off for a moment to the bathroom.or anywhere private and just let the tears flow. I can't control it and I've no idea why as its the only song except Nick Drakes "Riverman," that has such an emotional effect on me.
@@3dlabs99 I wish I had been aware of her in my youth. Then again, I was not aware of lots of stuff. She was obviously not a novice when it comes to the guitar. Her control of both, her instrument and her voice, is stunning. And also displayed with such class and eloquence. There are many covers of this song, and so far this is my favorite.
It's totally amazing, and that she sings flawlessly while playing a difficult song flawlessly and seemingly effortlessly is ... it's simply ecstasy, a spiritual experience.
Holy shit…. This is way way up there in the top shelf’s of the best performances a ever recorded… period. It’s like God said… “this gets recorded for everyone to hear”. She is absolutely amazing… so damn effortless!!!! Unbelievable guitarist, AND vocal control like I’ve never heard. Anyone who listens to this will be touched by it… Amazing..
A classic… an old soul full of grace… She was an inspiration anytime she sang…. Gone to soon…💔 Leaving us with a really pure voice… No diva… It’s no wonder she refused Sony… Enjoy Blessings
You said that right. I was trying to explain to my boyfriend her range, but couldn't say it the way you just did. She was absolutely the best female vocalist I have ever heard. So sad we lost such a treasure.
When it’s my time to go, and the aches and pains of this life, can’t affect me anymore, I want this played for me. This truly remarkable piece of art cuts to the core and touches my soul. Thank you EC for sharing your gift with us. You are greatly missed! 💙
It's 2023. Over the Rainbow has been my favourite since I was a child. I think Eva Cassidy's version of this is so beautiful. I keep coming back to it. ⭐
Eva's rendition of Over The Rainbow makes me think of Heaven and how much I miss my husband 😢 and other loved ones! I know I'll be going Home soon! And I'm anxious to be there too! 🔥✝️🕊
Me too I remember watching the Wizard of Oz every year with my mum When she passed away in 2018, this was my tribute to her at the graveside. I am crying now Xx
Some people are just meant to be here for a short while but make a massive impact...to raise the vibration of humanity...this woman was no exception....To whoever needs to hear this...there is no need for fear...there is only love and an eternity to share it
I only 'discovered' her a few years ago. I cannot get enough of this version of this iconic song. We all thought Judy's version was the bomb, and it was for all this time. Now, anytime I get into a conversation about music I always try to slip in, do you know Eva Cassidy? and then send them this video. There are a few other big videos (an hour plus) about her that tell more of her story that are good watching. She truly has the voice of an Angel. Try and keep a dry eye after watching / listening to this.
She's a combination of total uninhibited soul with absolute technical mastery. She covers the emotional landscape of this song like no one ever has. It's stunning... She is stunning!
Eva was such an amazing singer. I covered ‘my heart will go on’ on my UA-cam channel. It is a very raw cover recorded on my phone. I would really appreciate if you viewed it. 🙏💫
I made mention of it, I think it’s because her singing is so incredible The majority of people will miss the technique and mastery of her guitar playing. She hits the noted so perfectly, and with a technique that just amazes me…. And I’ve been playing guitar for over 45 years. I don’t know why it is but it seems like so many of the great ones die young but they leave behind their incredible music for us to listen to over and over. ❤️
I hear her perform this song and I am astounded. To me, there are two voices singing in harmony and accompanying each other. She is not just playing the guitar and singing over it; her voice and the guitar improvise with each other. There are times when she could sing but waits while the guitar finishes its phrase before continuing. This is just masterful and music at it finest.
Eva was a master at harmonizing. She had lots of experience as a backup singer in some bands she was in. I think that's why she was able to put her voice and her Songbird guitar together and create such a beautiful rendition of this and her many other cover songs.
Thank you for your insightful comments, which help me understand why I catch myself holding my breath, waiting for what comes next. She was beautiful, magical....
It's a great observation. Her phrasing is unbelievable and she took so much liberty with the melody in her singing that she practically crafted a new song. Of course, it doesn't start without a strong foundation in place, but her rendition is simply brilliant - especially where she takes her breaths (and they're in audible) and the ability to sing just above a whisper. I can't get over just how good she is.
I've been everywhere on UA-cam, and it would seem that nothing is sacred. Folks fighting in the comments, trolls everywhere. But when you go to any of Eva's songs the comments are filled with young and old, different cultures, different nationalities, singing of their praise and adoration for this amazing woman. We are all filled with a serene sense of sadness thinking of her early loss. We have all been moved to tears by her powerful voice dancing over these lyrics. And we are all brought together by this one amazing thing that we have in common. I can't help but think that's the way she would've wanted it. I wish you all happiness and peace, and hope that you will continue spreading her love through this music. : )
No matter how many times I listen to Eva's rendition of this song, I am in awe of her stunning vocals and guitar work. Never fails to bring a tear to the eye. Absolutely perfect.
Joan Blalock Look up Lucy Thomas version of over the rainbow and you will have a better happier version with the most skilled guitar player you ever heard !!! She is here on you tube !!!
@@wilburfinnigan2142 HI Wilbur, I never heard of Lucy Thomas until I read your post. She is fantastic and apparently so is her sister. I subscribed to her UA-cam channel. I thank you so much for sharing.
I agree 100% with you Joan....i've heard countless versions of this song and I still wholeheartedly love Eva's version the best. And considering she gave this live concert with a 103° temperature in stage four cancer....they had to help her walk on stage....and she still gave a such an exceptional performance regardless. I was a fan of hers before she passed away and 26 years later after her death...i am still a huge fan of hers are and i'm so excited about the new album with an orchestra .....a perfect combination. 😊❤ 🕊 Rest Peacefully Eva 🕊
Her amazing voice. Her incredible guitar work. But beyond all, how those amazing gifts combine with an interpretation that is so truly epic, so truly original. She seized this song, subdued it, made it her own, and gave it back as a gift to the world. So beautiful.
"She seized this song, subdued it, made it her own, and gave it back as a gift to the world." Magnificent description. It certainly is a gift to the world.
I am 56, and this song brings tears to my eyes, I think of all my family and great friends I have lost , parents, grand parents puppy dogs and Eva. Bless you for bringing us closer to our loved ones through your angelic voice
I was driving out of Washington DC many years ago listening to the radio and this song came on. I had not heard it before. I was so taken because it was sung so sweetly that for the first and only time in my life I pulled over, looked up the number of the station and called in. I asked who that was and the person I spoke to told me the story of Eva’s life and how we lost her so young. I was sad but also so glad I had found her music. I purchased everything I could find and today still look for this song to listen to and remember. Thanks to her parents for sharing her with all of us who love her music
My best friend Craig died when he was 33. He was the most innocent , untouched soul I had ever met. I honoured him by helping raise funds for his funeral. I had 3 children , I was pregnant with my youngest and I was basically homeless at the time. He taught my children kindness , innocence and love ❤️…through the masculine. We loved Eva Cassidy I chose one of her songs for his funeral. We joked that if we never found real love ❤️ we would just get married and have done with it 😂😂😂 I miss him , he looked like “ Harry Potter “ and was as magical. #Overtherainbow ❤️🦋✨
I don't get it. How can over 3000 people give this a thumbs down? Eva was one of the greats. It's too bad she died so young. Some people have no taste.
I’ve never in all my life seen/heard a more beautiful, more masterful , more emotionally powerful performance of any song by anyone, ever. Pure magic. If I could watch and listen to only one performance of one song for the rest of my days, it would absolutely be this performance.
I am ashamed to admit the first time I listened to this years ago I was only interested in comparing it to Judy Garland's version since I am a big fan of hers. Well, when I put my shallowness aside and listened with my heart, the tears flowed and I was humbled by Eva's brilliance as both a vocalist and guitarist. I found a copy of a songbook of Eva's that has this in it. My goal is to learn it. Her version is now a favorite of mine and I never tire of listening to it because of the nuances in her vocals and how her guitarmanship complements and accentuates her vocals. When I read Eva's story I was bummed because I can only imagine the amazing art she would have continued to bring to us. Thank goodness someone recorded this concert she did. 🙏🌈h
Here after a diagnosis of Lupus.. this song soothes me as only music can. Our family isn’t close. So I haven’t shared the news. Most of the family members who care are waiting for me over that rainbow. I’ve lost use of my right hand so I cannot play my guitar anymore.. Eva will always make it better ❤🎶☮️❤️
My heart and prayers go out to you. I'm 66 and was diagnosed with Ehlers Danlose Syndrome last year. I had health issues my whole life, but never the correct diagnosis.
@@sophiatealdo9680 She didn't know till six months later. Then she was aggressively treated with chemo which failed and she died in November. So she lived another 10 months. This wasn't her last performance
As many others have commented, this song brings tears to my eyes. It gently touches my heart and makes my spirit soar. The feeling of her music transcends musical notes, singing on pitch, strumming the guitar - she blesses us with her essence every time we listen to her angelic gift. 🪽
It really shows her genius for varying dynamics. She goes from a full fortissimo to a whisper quiet pianissimo within one measure, on the last verse. I consider this her signature performance. Fields of Gold is beautiful, but this is a masterpiece of musical craftsmanship.
People who can hear will be listening to this forever!!!❤❤❤
She had the voice of an angel.. her songs make me cry every time
The MOST BEAUTIFUL version ever!RIP Eva
I completely agree.
This is the first time I've heard Eva Cassidy, and I'm so glad I've finally discovered her! She lives on through her music, and is still touching peoples lives. What an amazing musician and artist!
Cry every time I hear it 😔
Listen to her song "Songbird" as well.
Ok I will
She was amazingly talented.
And “Autumn Leaves” is beautiful too. 🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁

This was not recorded in a musically mastered sound studio. It was a raw performance with only her to accompany herself. And it’s pure heaven. It’s also unequaled.
❤❤❤
Along with her stellar vocal performance, Eva played the guitar masterfully. Every breath, every nuance, every dynamic swell, is positively breathtaking. She OWNS this song, and just about every other song she covered. Amazing!!!

Absolutely and that’s what makes it so beautifully pure💕

I’m 62 mate. Trust me, you’re not old. Live your life....
It makes me cry too. Everytime.

When I first heard this it touched something deep inside of me. I was and still am mesmerized by her singing so checked her name out only to find that she passed away.. Such a loss, such a Beautiful soul !!!
Beautiful 🙏🏿❤️
I'm 60 in two weeks. It's march 2024. Quality never dies. I play guitar and piano and sing. I adore music. This voice is of an angel. Who couldn't listen to it. Don't ever care what people say about your taste in music. ❤️🎸🎹💋
Angel voice very moving
Agree so much Dave✨🕊️
I hope that you had a nice 60th birthday. I hope you got to enjoy either playing or listening to your favorite songs. That's really what it's all about in the end.

I am 80. Best rendition I have ever heard. We lost this treasure way too early.
73 years young here. I feel exactly the same way you do.
I think so, too. Lotta' people have sung the song Judy made famous but this rendition, to me, is the best. Period.
I am much younger than you! I am 72! However, we ever had same star!
Baloney. The legions of Garland fans would disagree.
She died nearly 26 years ago and we are still here listening...a true artist.
Many singers have covered this song, and some have very beautiful renditions, but nobody sang this song more beautifully than Eva. When I listen to her singing, I think of all the beautiful songs we never got to hear her sing. She put meaning and feeling into the words with her powerful voice.
Every time I listen I still get something new. 26 years from now it'll still be the case.
She sings with her heart.
@@carolynmorris7303 I love your Carolyn and god love your more that me.

I graduated from high school with Eva and had the privilege of seeing her live before she died. So, so good. An amazing talent and also a very humble and sweet lady. A tragic loss....
That is so cool, this will play when I go to heaven. Love rainbows and what God made. Gonna fly like a bluebird and troubles fly away.
She was the most amazing singing talent to ever perform.
How privileged you are to have known such amazing talent.
I had a dear friend use this for her Celebration of Life . She, too, passed from cancer. They both shared their beautiful talents and left too soon to become stars 🌟 looking down over us. ❤
How very lucky and blessed you were to know such a talented and beautiful woman who transformed so many genres. 🙏😥💔🦋💞💖💗🌟
I had this played at my husband's funeral and on the way to the church, a rainbow appeared.
My sister, at her funeral, just takes me there, every time I hear it. And a Judy Garland classic from our mum's era as well.
It means that your husband was there with you. There are no coincidences in life. The things that you see and feel are as real as the sun in the sky.
How beautiful! ♥
Perhaps it was a sign Eva was waiting to receive him, along with millions of other beautiful people no longer with us.

So very sorry to hear of the loss of your husband; I too, serious losses In the last two years...my mom, brother and best friend...so very painful...we can just hope they are over that Rainbow.

Lost my 40 year old son to a sudden heart attack on January 2, 2021. Every time I hear Eva's version of this song (and I play it quite often), tears roll down my cheeks, thinking of Brad. A great, caring and loving kid who had so much more to give on his personal and professional journeys.

She takes a familiar song, changes almost every note and phrase, and leaves you wondering how it ever could have been any other way.
So true. The first time I heard this version, I broke into tears. This is just so imaginative...and truly a classic version on it's own.
No one gets more out of a song than her.

Well, god bless you both. Peace be with you.
What a special voice.Remarkable

In this essay Kierkegaard argues for why it doesn't make sense to discuss who's "the best", because some are in a league above everybody else.

Is Eva "better" than Aretha??
They are ALL "The Best".

Welcome aboard. Eva is life changing!
She takes a classic that is generally considered a "happy" song and breaks your heart with it. Absolute brilliance.
Were you a fan of Eva?
Imagine her singing this knowing she only had a few months to live.
Well said my friend!

The most beautiful version of the most beautiful song.
R.I.P. Eva.
+Dara Quinn I agree. It's a heartbreaking version and heartbreaking that she's no longer here.
I still call 17 a young, rather immature voice, especially compared to her later on.
So true Dara, so so true! How much more beauty is there? I just cant see it through the tears! RIP Eva, you are loved by so many! See you there

She died 11 months after this recording…there is something soo deep going on here, much bigger than the song or the moment…a knowing that resonates to almost every human soul with an antenna to hear it. I can cry easily when listening to Eva. She just touches you so deeply with her pure voice and emotion. God, she was good.
@@victoriakirchner4371 when did you first listen to her song?
@@user-pq3fn6ev3l just a few yrs ago, maybe 2-3? I still go to UA-cam to see the videos especially. Have purchased all cds of her music I can find, and hope they keep putting them out. Most that hear her, love it ad as touched forever. And I do get teary still with many of her songs.
So true xxx
I am so grateful her boyfriend thought it wise to capture and preserve her gift for eternity. Eva Cassidy doesn't just sing, she embodies emotion in sound.
God bless whoever was cognizant enough to preserve her incredible talent. Just amazing..
Yes
We are lucky some one recorder her. From what I've read, she didn't think she was that good. She only played because she wanted to. I believe she worked in landscaping.
Eva had a girlfriend.
Until we meet again😢😢 ❤❤
i’m so sorry for your loss. may she rest in peace ❤️
So sorry for the loss of your mom 💔
This is exactly why I listen to Eva cassidy,, I lost my mom nearly 8 years ago and the tears still roll when I play songbird album, was my mom's favourite.. She always wanted a granddaughter and sadly she didn't get to meet my daughter, over the rainbow is her bedtime song ❤️
Eva isn't dead
She's over the raindbow 😩😩😩
She is the rainbow
@@jdrosborough yes. She is.
love that
Delightful remark.
m rayan She physically left us in 1996. Obviously she is still with us.
No complex riffs and runs, no super-high belting, no 30-second notes, no whistle tones, no fingers wiggling in the air, no head banging, no hair flipping, no swimming suits or Halloween costumes--just pure singing.
Eva Cassidy--truly one of the greats.
KusanagiRai couldn't agree more :)
Now that was well said, thank you.
Why do you felt the need to shade Mariah?
Absolutely unnecessary! The two are amazing singers with their own uniqueness. Stop putting women against each other!
I like everything you listed isn't in the song but agree completely
Klébio Monteiro exactly!
The best female voice I have ever heard.
No disrespect BUT to me , Voices are like fruits ... each has its own flavor, scent and uniqueness, Your comment of being the "best" is sad.... in that you haven't "tasted" the other flavors.
How does one compared an Apple to a lime?
I sincerely respect your opinion though.
Best version by anyone, anywhere, ever..
It's like the song was designed for her voice.
Truly amazing beautiful voice best rendition ever. No singer has touched my soul the way Eva did and still does.. I listen to her songs daily as much as I can.
Hands down 💛🌸When I hear her voice, I stop and think that is an angel singing. And its always Eva. Heaven likely gushed with joy as she entered.
This is song is so special. And the way she sings it so special.
Rest In Peace Eva.

shows you have a heart ❤
Well said , I'm a 51 Yr old male and whether it's Eva's or Israel ( from Hawaii) version and it starts playing and I'm in company I have to take myself off for a moment to the bathroom.or anywhere private and just let the tears flow. I can't control it and I've no idea why as its the only song except Nick Drakes "Riverman," that has such an emotional effect on me.
Everyone talks about her singing but her guitar work is something special as well.
Yeah its f*cking perfection
@@3dlabs99 I wish I had been aware of her in my youth. Then again, I was not aware of lots of stuff. She was obviously not a novice when it comes to the guitar. Her control of both, her instrument and her voice, is stunning. And also displayed with such class and eloquence. There are many covers of this song, and so far this is my favorite.
It's totally amazing, and that she sings flawlessly while playing a difficult song flawlessly and seemingly effortlessly is ... it's simply ecstasy, a spiritual experience.
imagine doing both at the same time..
believe me this is by no means "easy" to play, even without singing it. this is unbelievable
Her dynamic range I was nothing short of astounding… The pitch control she had from barely above a whisper to full tilt was otherworldly
A classic… an old soul full of grace…
She was an inspiration anytime she sang….
Gone to soon…💔
Leaving us with a really pure voice…
No diva…
It’s no wonder she refused Sony…
Enjoy
Blessings

You said that right. I was trying to explain to my boyfriend her range, but couldn't say it the way you just did. She was absolutely the best female vocalist I have ever heard. So sad we lost such a treasure.
My sister passed away aged 26.. this was her funeral song. I have not managed to listen to this for 11 years. But now I feel I can ❤❤❤ rip baby girl
Yes, I lost my little sister last year. This makes me think of her.
How in heaven's name can this have even a single thumbs down???? How is that even possible?

Awww bless you .this was played at my mum's funeral .it is a beautiful song but not very easy to listen to .
When it’s my time to go, and the aches and pains of this life, can’t affect me anymore, I want this played for me. This truly remarkable piece of art cuts to the core and touches my soul. Thank you EC for sharing your gift with us. You are greatly missed! 💙
So well said. I do too and will, just hopefully many years in the future. Thanks for your kind words.
Been listening to this for years and it's still just as breathtaking as the first time I heard it. My heart hurts for what could have been.

Love and Light, just what Eva expressed !
i so agree!
Amen. Incredible talent and a soul to match.
Best interpretation of this song ever recorded. Absolutely heartbreaking.
Yes it is!!! ♥♥♥
@@jenkslaura2392 hi 👋
I only 'discovered' her a few years ago. I cannot get enough of this version of this iconic song. We all thought Judy's version was the bomb, and it was for all this time. Now, anytime I get into a conversation about music I always try to slip in, do you know Eva Cassidy? and then send them this video. There are a few other big videos (an hour plus) about her that tell more of her story that are good watching. She truly has the voice of an Angel. Try and keep a dry eye after watching / listening to this.
No, I will not.
If the beaty of Eva Cassidys voice doesn't make your eyes wet, You have a SERIOUS Soul-problem!
She's such a master of singing that no one is even mentioning her top-tier guitar playing.
Thanks again to bring your fresh
And pure sound that the world needs and will forever.
A truth beautifully spoken.
Cant be taught
AMEN ! 😇 😇 😇
I can only humbly agree.xxxx

I agree 100% with you Joan....i've heard countless versions of this song and I still wholeheartedly love Eva's version the best.
And considering she gave this live concert with a 103° temperature in stage four cancer....they had to help her walk on stage....and she still gave a such an exceptional performance regardless.

Her amazing voice. Her incredible guitar work. But beyond all, how those amazing gifts combine with an interpretation that is so truly epic, so truly original. She seized this song, subdued it, made it her own, and gave it back as a gift to the world.

If this version doesn't bring tears, you'd better see a therapist.
you have a heart sir ❤
Beautiful
I don't get it. How can over 3000 people give this a thumbs down? Eva was one of the greats. It's too bad she died so young. Some people have no taste.
They must be Judy Garland fans! :)

I’ve never in all my life seen/heard a more beautiful, more masterful , more emotionally powerful performance of any song by anyone, ever. Pure magic. If I could watch and listen to only one performance of one song for the rest of my days, it would absolutely be this performance.
I completely agree. Well said.

What a lot of nonsense.

This is one of the most note perfect performances ever, both guitar and vocals are perfect
It really shows her genius for varying dynamics. She goes from a full fortissimo to a whisper quiet pianissimo within one measure, on the last verse. I consider this her signature performance. Fields of Gold is beautiful, but this is a masterpiece of musical craftsmanship.
There must be something beyond all this. I can't believe this lady isn't singing somewhere else now.
