    Great video! A few important things I would like to add for people who watch this:
    1. You can draw directly into Spirit Blade I by hitting R2 while your weapon is sheathed
    2. This is a big one, I saw you doing it in the video but you didn't actually mention how to do it. You can aim your Spirit Helm Breaker in the air by inputting Triangle while holding a direction. You can do this at any point before you actually perform the falling slash, so I would recommend waiting until the last moment to decide on the direction, in case the monster moves while you're in the air.
    3. I saw you doing this too, but just so people know, you can also aim the Foresight Slash by holding a direction while performing it. The direction you hold should be where you want to end up, the opposite of the direction you dodge towards. For example, I could hold right on the stick, which would make me dodge to the left, then spring back to my original position on the right.
    4. The "input delays" you mentioned are also very useful if you've just performed a Helm Breaker and you start your Spirit combo, but don't have enough gauge to finish it. The automatic gauge refill after the Helm Breaker means you can often delay each hit just enough that your meter will fill enough for the next hit, even if you start the combo with almost no charge at all.
    5. Many LS users fall into the trap of taking the Jump Master skill after getting tired of their Spirit Helm Breakers getting interrupted. It does NOT count as a jumping attack for the purposes of that skill. The best ways to not be interrupted are Rocksteady Mantle, or Earplugs for roars.
    6. You mentioned that Foresight Slash must be performed in the middle of a combo, but I'd like to clarify that the reason why you were pressing Circle instead of Triangle to set it up is because the thrust is significantly faster than the slash, making it the best way to set up a Foresight Slash from neutral (not in a combo).
    Edit: Added one more tip in the replies.

      One more thing I remembered!
      7. You can turn during your combos to adjust to the position of the monster and orient yourself towards weak spots. You actually have a lot of freedom in this. Between Spirit Blade I and the finisher, you can rotate almost 180 degrees! This is also really helpful for orienting yourself to make sure the Roundhouse Slash connects, because even though it has a very wide hitbox, it hits more on your left side than your right, with a large "blind spot" between your hunter's 3 o'clock and 7 o'clock, and your longest range being anything directly in front of you. So if the monster wanders out of the way and you're swinging at air, sometimes you can make the decision to still finish your combo and turn yourself enough to put them in range for the Roundhouse. I believe the controls during combos default to "tank controls" (your directional inputs must be based on the way your character is facing), but I think there's an option in the settings to change this to be based on the orientation of the camera instead.

      Not only can you aim the foresight slash's return strike in 360 degrees initially, but as your character is moving back toward the monster you have a cone where you can tilt the slash's direction a little right and left from the original input. Oh, and aerial spirit slashes will fill the spirit gauge if it's under the amount required for one spirit combo step.

      You can also add an extra attack if you parried with Foresight Slash by pressing R2 just after the slash I believe.

    Some adjustment to your video. And not only adjustment, but adjustwoment and adjustchildrent too: When you perform the helm breaker, the gauge fills automatically for a short period of time. Depending on the level of the "sword", white yellow or red, it will perform diferent jumping r2 attack; you didn't show the attack with red level, that will perform 3 attack, than comboing with another 3 attack of the r2 combo, then the final slash. So each level of the sword is a mid-air slash. Also, the helm breaker attack can crit.

    If you have at least white gauge and a ledge next to you, you can roll off the ledge,
    push the analog stick back towards the ledge, and press R2 and you will attack and land back onto the ledge, you can infinitely repeat this.
    It also does mounting damage which means its almost a guaranteed mount if the monster is near a ledge and you land the hits.
    Btw, the sliding slash also works even if you have no spirit gauge charged up (no white), the way the sliding R2 works is that if you have spirit gauge, it will deplete it. However, if you have 0 gauge, the first hit will actually fill some of the gauge, allowing you to go straight into the roundslash regardless of gauge level (no gauge, white, yellow, red)

    So I actually started playing MH on Gen, and I remember watching your LS tutorial and learning this weapon as my first main. Since then I have put over 500 hrs into Gen and transitioned to MHW where I have about 100+ on LS. Its insane to think I got here just because of your vids, and am really as good as I am with the weapon because of that first tutorial. Great to see these coming back for MHW, and hope that others get as much out of them as I did! Thanks Gaijin!!

    Small correction: After you do the Spirit Helm Breaker, the Spirit gauge fills up by itself, you don't actually gain more with every attack.
    14:21 You can see it here, it fills up without you attacking.
    And you also did not mention that you can change the direction of the Spirit Helm Breaker during the jump by pressing an attack input.

    This was the weapon I chose to start with way back in Monster Hunter Freedom 2 on the PSP. This version of the weapon is so different than the one I was using back then. We had to use the circle button in our combo, and our gauge didn't have different glowing colors around it. Also there was no counters or cool looking anime finishers. I've played every Monster Hunter game since MHF2 but I never did go back to Longsword after trying out different weapons. But this move set looks so cool I want to go back to longsword after around a decade of not using it.

    Love the vids! I scrolled through comments and noticed no one pointing out that you can enter the slide animation much more quickly by rolling and holding the sprint button while on most slanted surfaces. Not sure if it's common knowledge or not, but it's really helpful for getting all manner of slide attacks off and as a dual blade user, it's incredibly handy for spamming the aerial spin attack. Hope this is helpful :)

    @gaijin hunter One thing I'd like to share with everyone who watch gaijin's channel that wasn't mentioned here about LS is that you can cancel the foresight slash animation instantly into the spirit helm breaker (without finishing the foresight slash swing). This is useful when you successfully use the foresight slash to counter an attack with the dodging animation, but you're already at red gauge and had an opening for a more damaging spirit helm breaker.
    Credits to Quizzle, one of a really great LS speedrunner on youtube.
    P.S. Don't worry, gaijin, you're still my #1 channel when it comes to MH contents ;)

  • @Metallian2112
    @Metallian2112 6 років тому +1

    Tip: Your circle attack is faster than your triangle so if you're looking for a foresight slash opportunity, use that. Also, instead of the 4x triangle combo, you can triangle, circle, triangle. Situational, though.

  • @Tikayy
    @Tikayy 4 роки тому

    1. Instead of 4 x Triangle > 4 x R2, you can do 3 x Triangle > 1x Triangle+Circle > 3 x R2.
    This way you gain gaige with the Triangle+Circle, but it also counts as the first R2, meaning you can go through it all by doing 7 attacks instead of 8.
    2. The invulnerability framing, it does use up the gaige, though you get full gaige back when the attack hits the target. If you R2 after it, you gain a stage (white > yellow > red), meaning it's a really quick way to get to the next too if needed.
    Invulnerability > hit (get full gaige) > R2 (get next stage)

    I'd also like to add , you can help aim and transition from a foresight slash to a spirit thrust by doing a spirit thrust as you jump back for the foresight slash , getting spirit armor and transitioning into a spirit thrust. It's worth noting that using this will drain your spirit gauge after the jump back.

    1) The spirit meter depletes over time. Slowly, but it does.
    2) You can draw attack with Spirit Attack 1 with R2. From there you can go into the full combo if you have the meter.
    3) If you do the Spirit Attack 1 without the necessary meter energy it will not count as a Spirit Attack and actually give you some meter energy. This also applies to the sliding attack, so if it's the beginning of a hunt or you happen to be empty you can slide into a monster and go right into the round slash.
    4) The red gauge adds a third hit to the jumping attack but doesn't skip Spirit Attack 3 for some reason.
    5) The flashing meter energy means it's refilling automatically, not that it's going to build up faster. Though the latter is a side effect of the former.
    6) While it may be tempting to try and go right for the Spirit Helm Breaker as much as possible, you should try to do it only when you have the opening to ensure the monster doesn't move out of the way. You can use regular attacks in the meantime which will still do good damage with the red gauge.

    A couple thing: Foresight slash ONLY let’s you go into the R2 slash that lets you level up your spirit gauge IF you hit with the counter when you would have taken a hit. It doesn’t work if you miss with the counter slash or just perform the attack without countering anything. Second thing after the arial attack that is performed by sacrificing a level of spirit gauge and hitting R2+Triangle together, your spirit gauge will continuously refill afterwards as long as you landed the air hit. It isn’t actually boosting the amount of spirit gauge you get when you land hits, it is refilling even if you are standing around! (Would like a time period on that but I haven’t sat around and counted, and BOY do I feel stupid typing this out when I don’t actually know the names of the moves xD). Anyhow, a couple of key clarifications! I hope this helped!
    PS: my wife calls this the broken sword because she argues that you wouldn’t be able to sheathe the sword xD (She likes to heckle me while I play lol)

    One item I felt that that left out was actually in regards to the Spirit Helm Breaker.
    It would help to point out that after doing the attack, you are locked in the landing animation until you're back to normal. With one exception, you can go right into the counter attack (R2 + O) and immediately start moving again. This works in tandem with the regeneration of the Spirit Gauge from the Helm Breaker.
    A useful combo that I use a lot is the Helm Breaker in red, counter attack to skip the animation lock, fade Slash and spirit combo. If you time everything right, then there will be a slight animation delay, but you can get back to Red level in one nonstop combo after the Helm Breaker.

    Hey GH, LS main here, great vid as always! You did miss two small details.
    1. The R2 jumping spirit combo upgrades to a fast 3 hit combo you are at red gauge, for a little bit of extra mounting damage.
    2. Being at red gauge for Spirit Helmbreaker not only increases the motion value of those hits, but also increases the length of the spirit gauge autofill afterwards.

    im not a super main long sword user but i notice something interesting with foresight slash you can actually input direction to it and use it to get a better position or counter charges. so if you want to move forward you input back, left you input right at the same time you pull the foresight slash.

  • @tailgrowth

    One random tip is that you can build up spirit energy and do the Spirit Blade combo on corpses and it will still work the same as a living target. Can be helpful at times when you want to get your meter up super easily.

  • @bladewolfvii6383
    @bladewolfvii6383 6 років тому

    By the way, I'm sure that many people allready figured it out, but If you have red gauge and no time to throw the Helmbreaker just yet, you can use an infinite spirit combo: Spirt blade I into normal attack into Spirit blade II into normal attack into Spirit blade III but now instead of normal attack you go into fade slash and from there you can rinse and repeat. Just remember to allways fadeslash after spirit blade III because otherwhise you stop the combo and just stand there.

    There's a ledge jumping technique that I saw GS speedrunner use, which can also be applied to LS. As you press A to jump off ledge, long press RT to do a jump back and slash, it takes a bit of practice but gives some serious damage output if use in conjunction with affinity booster and airborn.

  • @Tragodile

    13:49 The way you worded this seemed odd? What it does simply is regenerate gauge over time with different amounts depending on your gauge color before using the move, doesn't it? Ex. I do a spirit helm from red> yellow, but the monster moves away after I land the hit. While I'm trying to catch up, my spirit gauge regenerated enough for me to only need a step slash to do a full spirit combo after it. This is how it works and I'm not crazy from sleep deprivation right? lol

    You can actually go into a Spirit Thrust mid-Foresight Slash. If you hit R2+Triangle right as you draw back in the Foresight Slash, you’ll go into the Thrust.
    Also, you can input directions with your Foresight slash to change where you dodge and where you attack when coming back.

    You probably should let the viewers know that Spirit Helm Breaker does not count towards mounting damage even though it looks like it could.

    hi! im new to your videos and love them and you! thank you for making consistently great content! but i think for this video you missed some of the most important information: where to focus the monster in a team. LS should stay away from popular areas like the head and focus on the chest, back, or tail in order not to trip it's teammates. also i don't know of any support moves the LS has, but if it does i think you should have mentioned them. like for example the GS upswing launches teammates, giving them opportunity to mount.
    thank you and see you next video! :)

      Keep in mind that while tail is usually always a weak spot, as a LS user you have to attack a weak point to maximize you gauge gains. So chest isn't always an option.

      I think it will be better if he make guide how to play every weapon in a team instead of one. he can show people basic role of every weapon and how to hunt as a team.
      but then again there's too many variation. so far I only know that
      - hammer, HH and GS get the head in that order.
      - LS mainly focus on tail before other parts. GS, IG, SA and CB can also attack tail.
      - glaive for tripping and mount (once or twice).
      - lance is attacking wherever they won't get tripped.
      - sns can do well in stunning or mounting IF there's no one filling that role.
      - DB do well in tripping monster

    • @anubis24354
      @anubis24354 6 років тому

      Just FYI, you should only deliberately launch someone if you have coordinated it. It's only an opportunity to mount if the person actually wants to mount.

      The long sword doesn't vault players or teammates up. Most part ls players will stick to the tail and rear legs. If you don't want to be trip stay away from there. Just like if your not using great sword, hammer, hunting horn, stay away from the head.

    The Forsight Slash can change orientation too. Making positioning and counter attacking really feel like you saw that coming. Countering and positioning yourself behind a charging monster then hitting it from behind can sometimes lead to some cool looking tail cuts.
    Also there are no invi-frames during the slash animation part of the move. Only the back-step part.

    Just like to point out that the flashing spirit gauge from the helm breaker isn't just increased spirit buildup, but AUTO spirit buildup. The gauge will refill on its own.

  • @PongzeLor
    @PongzeLor 6 років тому

    The glowing orange after the helm splitter also regens your spirit gauge.
    Also the poke attack can be combo’d after almost anything now.
    You can also attack -> side evade-> side fade slash -> side evade and repeat. Not really practical but if you need to keep facing one direction it’s pretty nice. Maybe you can do some box maneuvers with this.

    • @S34Mii
      @S34Mii 6 років тому +1

      Reap3r15 No. The helm breaker decreases your gauge by 1 level. So if it's red, it drops to yellow. If yellow, it drops to white, etc. But if it hits, your spirit gauge will start to refill on its own and you a can pretty much go right back into spirit slashes to level it up again. Let me know if you got more questions. Over 200 hrs strong with that Longsword!

    A small note people might be interested to keep in mind is that Foresight Slash shortcut to Spirit Roundslash doesn't present itself if Foresight itself doesn't hit anything. The Foresight consumes all of your spirit even if you timed accordingly for the "parry", the dashing attack part is where you gain about 60% of your spirit back which is more then enough for a Roundslash. You can input the opposite direction you want to "dodge back" through Foresight so you can control where your follow up slash will go.
    Similarly the Roundslash itself can be deladed and redirected through analog input, should the monster manage to slip the the area to your right the move doesn't cover, or especially if you have surrounding teammates..... don't give them reasons to hate us more then we already are... no need to go back in 4U days and get kicked on sight....be smart.

    Not only can you aim the foresight slash's returning strike in any direction initially, but as your character is moving back toward the monster you have a cone where you can tilt the slash's direction a little right and left from the original input.
    Also, aerial spirit slashes will fill the spirit gauge instead of depleting it if it's under the amount required for one spirit combo step.

  • @muhstello

    Just so it's known the flashing bar after helm breaker means that the bar is filling automatically on its own even if you don't hit anything. It's not filling the bar more per hit

  • @TheBuffon074
    @TheBuffon074 6 років тому

    Having Helm Breaker is a great addition, it deal a lot of damage and it also made LS to tripping people less often because the LS user doesn't need to relying on Spirit Slash to deal damage anymore. Expert LS user will use Spirit Slash even less because Foresight Slash is faster way to upgrade Spirit Gauge.

  • @HazmanFTW
    @HazmanFTW 6 років тому

    Ah cheers, I wondered why sometimes I did a multi hit attack with R with a jumping attack. You say sliding is the fastest way to get into a round slash, but the faint attack is actually faster, and doesn't require a slope. The flashing gauge means it automatically refills, rather than getting more per attack.

    Something you missed: You can go straight from the Foresight dodge into the Helmsplitter. I heard some people say there is an innate damage increase for Helmsplitter from this, but I'm not sure. Foresight dodge also gains the Evasion Mantle's damage buff. And you talked about this point but I think it's one of the most important things about LS that should be reinforced: using Fade Slash in place of the first R2 Spirit Combo attack is amazing. Not only does it skip the first hit so you avoid the Spirit Gauge cost, but the Fade Slash builds Spirit Gauge, so you need TWO less attack's worth of gauge to execute a full Combo compared to spamming R2; so using Fade Slash lets you finish a full Spirit Combo when starting it at like half gauge.

  • @Shadowolf1181
    @Shadowolf1181 6 років тому

    if at any point you run out of gauge(during your spirit combo) and your character just stops you can fade slash to skip the long animation of going back to standing.

  • @k1ll3rcombo25
    @k1ll3rcombo25 6 років тому

    I think it is important to mention that if you us helm breaker with no forward input at the time of contact you will do a simple vertical. Any forward input will send your character forward a considerable distance which may be good for jumping off say the back leg of a monster to the head, but will cause you to over shoot the tail from the back leg. Its not impossible to learn and predict but anyone new to the weapon may wonder why they are over stepping the monster with this powerful attack.

    You could have added one thing, after the helmbreaker Just go for a foresight (if you get "hit" just use roundslash and you are Red again, if not:) just do an evading slash and you have enough spirit bar to reach the roundslash, you will add damage and shorthen the lock of the hunter after the helmbreaker animation :3
