Did you have any trouble getting the heat bolts off? Did you have to heat the bolt heads? Thanks for your reply in advance. Matt in Iowa. (proud new owner of a '50 Merc) @@aarondominguez4533
It's called a "head bolt heater." They were used in the northern tier states and Canada in the wintertime to aid in cold-weather starting. Ultimately replaced in the early sixties by the tank heater which circulated hot water through the entire cooling system, resulting in instant starting and instant cabin heat upon starting. Try to preserve that heater. It's an historic item. Nice motor, btw.
Had a 51 Ford 2 door in high school in 1961 . . . it had two in head heaters, when it was plugged in overnite in Winnipeg the gage was off the bottom when you started the thing. I had dual heaters inside which worked so good you could drive around in shirtsleeves at -30.
What you most probably have here is an engine from a Monarch-the Canadian market version of a Mercury. Built with mix and match parts from both Ford and Mercury otherwise identical models, same year, same market, would have different engine configurations depending on what was supplied by the parent factory at any one time. I had one of the early sedans and working on it was a nightmare.
I'll bet it's a thrill to find something like that 🤔🔧🤔🔧👍,, rebuilding automatic transmissions 44 years and if I find a perfect C-4 OR C-6 TO RE DO I'M HAPPY 🔧🔧🔧
So in comparison of this video with the next....you stated you had the shop mag Flux it...then in the next vid the intake and head surface areas are really cleaned up...did the shop dress it up or did you. If you... How did you surface it? Thanks

Hi Raju, modern engines have the valve train in the heads, The old "Flathead" head is basically a flat plate with water passages in it, the valves are in the engine block.
It's a very clean and also very complete engine. The guy who had it before was taking care of it for sure.
Hi Martin, yes, it was stored in a barn under a bench.

Hi @@mdogg1604 , no, that motor came apart pretty easily. It had been stored inside and out of the weather.
Thanks! Same situation here. I'm feeling more confident now about removing the head bolts.@@aarondominguez4533

@@dalew801 In Winnipeg, you surely want that!
@@xminusone1 Still gets cold in Winnipeg today . . . but I left in 69 & have lived on the West Coast near White Rock since the 70s.
@@dalew801 My 53 has one of those head bolt heaters and here in Brandon it still heats the motor up nicely in the dead of winter
Don't know much about flat head Fords but,,, I'll bet this is a honey of the hive
Yes, I was very happy when I opened it up and it looked good.
IT must have been fun back when you could rebuild a flat head and know that it's probably going to be a good running engine 💪
Thanks, I really needed that water pump tip.
Cool man, glad it helped.
Best Video I have ever seen on this Engine, You really know what you are doing 💯👍😀😀😀
Thanks Donald
Sweet little flattie. Really clean inside. Might be low mileage. Thanks for sharing
Hi Ron, I'm thinking the same thing.

I enjoy your videos working on flathead
Thanks Richard
Nice engine, really clean on the inside.
Hi Joe, ya, I really think they removed this motor not to long after the last rebuild.
Hola Aaron. Felicitaciones desde Argentina. ¿Sabrías cuantas libras tiene ese motor. Sin agua y sin lubricante?
Hola Fabi, Lo siento, no lo hago.

It's always a gamble buying an old flathead motor, when you find you have a good one it is a nice feeling.

How did you surface it? Thanks
Hi Boxcar, I used a fine wire wheel on my battery drill to clean all the surfaces up.
Amazing motor for it's time
Yep😀
@@aarondominguez4533 уважаемый сколько в этом моторе сил?
What all did you have the machine shop do?
Hi Sammy, just magnaflux the block.
@@aarondominguez4533 Awesome, thank you. I assume the valve seats and all other wear items check out good?

Are '49 up insert bearings or did any of them use babbit bearings? I'm just getting into flatheads from Chevy 235s so I'm not too familiar with them
They are regular modern type bearings.
Looks like you really got lucky on this engine as long as you do not find cracks later. I'd die to know what you paid for it! 🤔
Getting ready to build a go-kart i guess.
Ya, not a lot of horsepower, but the perfect motor for a traditional hot rod.
Why is it called 'flathead'?

Hi Freddy, Flatheads changed throughout the years. 8BA’s are 1949 to 1953.
nice
Thanks nicholas
Maybe Truck from Canada
Maybe.
sounds like you better yank that intake and re-adjust those noisy ass lifters
Hi Dennis, you must be talking about a different video, the motor doesn't run in this video.
You sound like geddy Lee
Thanks man, I wish I could sing like him!
