  • From ‘CHANNELLING THE BEAT!’ book:
06-03-69 - ‘Top Of The Pops’ (UK): The First Of May (Robin Gibb didn’t hide his dislike of this song, and, as it featured Barry singing without harmonies and Robin didn’t play any instruments, he just sat there during this performance doing absolutely nothing. Sadly, Robin quit the band shortly after this, not reuniting with the others until 18 months later)_________________________________________________

This clip survives thanks to a member of The Lulu Fan Club as Lulu appeared on the same show singing 'Boom Bang-a-Lang'. I think this is only one of a very few editions of TOTP presented by Alan Freeman that still exist. Great song by The Bee Gees but you can clearly see why Robin Gibb hates the song. He must've felt like a spare part not doing anything whilst Barry and Maurice are performing the song.

There is a beautiful version of this song by Lulu and ex husband the late Maurice, which demonstrates away from his brothers Maurice was also a great singer.
