This car is so fun to drive it's the funnest thing you can do with your clothes on.
Happy owner of a 2009 23i since 2018. Only had to replace the battery (+low voltage of the old one triggered a false warning light for the handbrake which did not go away afterwards) and a worn out swing-arm in the front. The roof has been a little rattly since I bought it. Other than that it´s been a very pain-free ownership and a fun drive.
Ive owned a 2.0 from 2016 and driven 80k miles in it. Problems I came across with are cracked alloys ( poor UK roads ). Boot not closing. ( design issue with broken electrical wires. Easy to fix yourself). Oil leak. Top bit of the engine which is made from plastic replaced. That was the most expensive thing. No other problems at all.
I'm finally lucky enough to be in a position whereby I can afford a summer/GT car and the 2.5 litre version of the Z4 is catching my eye. This video was extremely helpful and I'll have it on repeat when I am going around and viewing them. Given the oil leaks with these cars which engine is worse for reliability? I've heard the 6 cyclinder is smoother than the 4 but not sure on reliability. Thanks again for the help

Got some new information from this video... did not know about the battery cable and cooling fan relay... Heres my experience with the Z4: I have owned a 09 z4 35i for almost 7 years. DCT oilpan is prone to minor leaking aswell... DCT service includes new gasket so usual DCT service fixed that.. and i was about due for dct service anyway... Front adaptive shocks dont seem to last long on these... maybe depending on how ruff the roads you drive on are... Adaptive shocks arent cheap... you can replace them or go with aftermarket suspension... i went with KW V3 suspension and dialed that in to my liking. I have replaced coilpacks aswell... and replaced boost solenoids and vacuum lines as preventative maintenance... Waterpump tends to go at some point.... mine did not stop working but developed cracks in its plastic housing and leaked coolant from there.... Trunklid softclose has some wires that break and its basically a design flaw... when they do they short and softclose either dont work or goes nuts cycling open/close nonstop... Fix is to resolder the wires... and if this happens on the one side be sure to check the other side aswell... i repaired wires on the left side and 2 months lates wires failed on the right side... so i had to take things apart twice... not a hard fix... you have to get the latching mechanism out from inside the bootlid and then just do some soldering work... Havent had any issues with the roof... still works fine.... on the roof system i have replaced 2 salmon relays in the boot and i do have to coupling microswitces on a shelf waiting for some free time to get installed as a preventative maintenance.... Old battery can cause some wierd issues... so replace your battery early and be sure to register it to the car so it knows that it has a new one in it... Before buying check that it has index 12 injectors on it... they are the newest iteration and most reliable.... earlier ones had issues... and upgrading all 6 injectors to index 12 costs thousands... fortunately mine came with index 12-s lready on it and i havent had any issues with them... Mine has also had Stage 1 tune on it for the most of my ownership... adds about 60hp... you can go crazy with mods on these n54-s but i like to keep it simple and relatively reliable... + its already fast enough... Thats about it... Great video btw...

Z4 sdrive 28i, Is it reliable? What are the common issues it can possibly has? What would be the best year for the Z4 28i, 2013 and up? Appreciate any feedback! 🙏🏻
I have a Z4 Sdrive 28i from 2014, it's a manual. The most common problem may be issues with the timing chain. The original plastic holder for the chain is weak as small pieces of plastic may break off and may go into the engine chamber resulting into complete engine failure. BMW has replaced the part with a revised one. It is a well-known problem with the BMW N20 engines. Check the service records if maintenance on the timing chain has been done, if not then consider doing preventive maintenance (maybe the complete set of parts). Had this done together with replacing the valve cover as it became brittle and the engine runs great ever since. Yes, it is expensive but it will avoid complete engine failure. Fortunately, the mechanic doesn't need to take out the engine completely as it is easily accessible... Hope this helps!
It's not a review. It's a garage listing faults. Garages only see scars with faults the vast majority of Z4 s have been fine. We don't know how many cars with each fault he has seen but I would wager it's very low
I’m interested in buying a 2013 z4. It’s had a reconditioned engine. Also the roof doesn’t work. Would this stop you from buying? The price is good, but the roof worries me. Would the fixes to the roof be costly?
Always stay clear of recon engines. They are typically rebored and will only give you another 25k miles at best. Usually a scam (unless you did it yourself and you know what you are doing!).
I have a Z4 and the passenger side Zenon light (outermost light) is dimmer than the driver’s side. Do you know what could cause this? I recently had the bumper replaced because someone backed into my car and was wondering if that could have caused it. I didn’t notice the light issue until someone looking at it from the outside mentioned it to me.
Zenon lights do not normally break suddenly, they lose intensity, they even change the color to pink. At least they are not terribly expensive like others, between 90€ and 140€ installed, here in Spain.

Maybe you can help me out, I have a 2011 Z4 and my parking light indicator on my gearbox next to P always stays lit everyday for the past year that I have had the car it always stays on It's a little amber light next to park, is this normal? How do I fix this?
I have 2010 Z4 since 12 years and extensive BMW owner experience. I do not understand what he is talking about. The only problems were trunk auto close (trunk lock) and AC compressor . cheers
What you think about this? Now there is a recall action for models with n52 engine 2009-2012 because the following issue: The bolts connecting the variable camshaft timing unit to the engine may break. This may activate the limp home mode safety feature and potentially cause the engine warning light to illuminate and the vehicle to lose motive power. I have a 2011 z4 23i with n52b25 with only 27.000 km. And so a “new” engine i dont want to open, i think once is open, after will be never “factory” engine anymore. What do you think? Is this a valid problem? If yes, why did bmw wait so much time with the recall? Thanks for your answer!
I have 2011 z4 e89 2.3i sdrive and have miss fire problem. Every time I accelerate a little bit harder than normal it will miss fire then the engine check light comes on. After turning the car off engine check light clear and the runs back to normal. Would that be the coil packs and spark plug that causing the problem?
We had almost the same issue. BMW Z4 3.0L 35i N54 (380BHP). BMW Origimal work shop swapped everything they thought was defect. Mostly electric parts as plugs, coils, cables and so on. Typical spare part swappers, but they make her run like a goddess. Price: Approx € 6 500.00 😥 Then dampers start leaking so we also swapped the feathers. Original! Price: Approx € 4 500.00 😣 Then she started leaking motor oil into the cooling water. BMW Original Price: Approx € 1 300.00 Our BMW Z4 is a very fun car to drive, but so expensive! 😭
@@ZAPPERAZZI I hope you get your baby back into her glory. I still have the problem and yes very expensive to get it fix. At the moment I just don't use my z4 until I have enough money to get it fix. I think either spark plug or coil packs that is causing the misse fire. I can't think of anything that would cause it.
Yes. But, it really is a great car. The engine is excellent. If maintained like any other car you can expect it to last forever. Please note he said at the end of the video that it s not really a bad car. It s a very good car, but all cars can have some issues. Check out some of the cars that really got serious issues and you ll know what I mean. Like Audi A5s for example. Or God forbid you buy a Mini Cooper 😅
@@oscareriksen2240 Mini is owned by BMW! And the British police have stopped buying BMWs because the engines keep failing and I’m sure they are well maintained. I actually drive a BMW myself.
@96 Same here. I know BMW owns the Minis btw. I could say Land Rover instead. Or older Alfa Romeo. I m just saying it all depends which German car you buy. Even Toyota has a couple of models which is far from perfect. I know. In general they are probably the best, but still. Not all Toyota owners are happy. I own a Z4. 2004 model. The straight six is one of the best engines BMW has ever made. And I don t think this is clear when you watch the video. It appears as if the Z4s got lots of issues which is a false impression. In general Z4 owners are very happy with the car. Feel free to check if you wish. Of course you got to maintain it regularly. The repairs are mostly filters and other cheap parts. 95 % is basic wear and tear. He speaks about older cars and mine is 20 years old. Apart from that the engine can last forever. Sound is great, handling is amazing. Plus it s still a beauty.. I m a big fan of classic cars. I was considering buying a Mini Cooper though. Like many others I m charmed by the looks and the driving expedience of especially the S models. But, I looked at the feedback from owners and at forums. It s just too much of a risk. I prefer to drive a car not only repair it 😅

I think this video is just a list of the most common issues they come across as a workshop when people do have a problem with the car and bring it in.. That doesn't mean all these issues are common to *all* E89 Z4's.. I've also driven a 2010 E89 Z4 30i without any issues for over 5 years, and now drive a 2014 E89 Z4 35is, also still without any issues..
These cars are so nice but I just don't want a money pit. I'm probably going to be looking at a 370 roadster, they're not as classy but much more reliable.
Only problems I had was the roof the pump replaced plus sensors etc on a 2011 plate 2.3i auto BMW want a fortune for that found other pump makers all done for £500 total BMW wanted £3000 🤦♂️
I was thinking exactly the same however many youngsters modify these turbo era cars and they then start to go wrong, ironically I own 35is last model and have never had one issue…..and it drives very nicely……over 4 years of ownership.
"You don't buy one of these because it looks good! You buy it because it's a convertible"...... Really! I'm buying one of these(Sdrive 30i with manual box) because they are a drivers car...

Now there is a recall action for models with n52 engine 2009-2012 because the following issue:
The bolts connecting the variable camshaft timing unit to the engine may break.
Leave all the "factory engine" bullshit alone and please change those bolts.
OMG was thinking of getting one but this has put me right off. Not that bad? Sounds like a nightmare car.
Hi we would recommend plugging in a diagnostic tool to read the engine ECU, based on what fault you get, you can then begin to make checks.
Price: Approx € 6 500.00
😥
Then dampers start leaking so we also swapped the feathers. Original!

Then she started leaking motor oil into the cooling water. BMW Original

Our BMW Z4 is a very fun car to drive, but so expensive!
So much for German engineering excellence!
I prefer to drive a car not only repair it 😅
@@kech9496 Apparently my response is deleted. What a weird thing to do. The channel can t handle just a tiny bit of criticism. Cancel culture rules. LOL. Well. Who cares. I won t watch videos from here again.
He is a BMW hater - I have Z4 E89. .(2009)- had for many years now - NO PROBLEMS!
Lol Thank you for watching
I think this video is just a list of the most common issues they come across as a workshop when people do have a problem with the car and bring it in.. That doesn't mean all these issues are common to *all* E89 Z4's.. I've also driven a 2010 E89 Z4 30i without any issues for over 5 years, and now drive a 2014 E89 Z4 35is, also still without any issues..
Lucky then, see my list of problems. My colleague sold her car after one year due to roof then finally park brake failed.
@@flybobbie1449 But still have my car 11 years now.
@@oliisakitty1965 And me also 11 years now.
What a looooong list🤦♂️ Sounds like us quitting ahead of time will save more than a few pennies. Thank you
Informative video but at the end when he sits on the bludy bonnet, especially in work overalls… really!? Glad that’s not my motor 😬
These cars are so nice but I just don't want a money pit. I'm probably going to be looking at a 370 roadster, they're not as classy but much more reliable.
Don't get me wrong, good video. But it should be titled, reasons not to buy a Z4 with a bit of self-promotion thrown in.
Only problems I had was the roof the pump replaced plus sensors etc on a 2011 plate 2.3i auto BMW want a fortune for that found other pump makers all done for £500 total BMW wanted £3000 🤦♂️
why buy such car that gives u so many issues and costly to fix?????
Ever driven one ?
Like why gave a hot high maintenance sexy GF ?
I was thinking exactly the same however many youngsters modify these turbo era cars and they then start to go wrong, ironically I own 35is last model and have never had one issue…..and it drives very nicely……over 4 years of ownership.
I’ve not had any real issues over 16 years. It all depends on how you treat them.
"You don't buy one of these because it looks good! You buy it because it's a convertible"...... Really! I'm buying one of these(Sdrive 30i with manual box) because they are a drivers car...
Just to a certain degree
A rwd with so much and intense understeer is disgusting
@@Krezo200 Thank you, any tips on how to tighten up the front end? Strut bar, full coilover swap or turn off traction control and learn how to drive....
@@thescergie i had a 23i with kw v3, it was awesome. Most grip i ever had in a car. But the standard settings are just gruesome. I wish these bmws were more playfull and tailhappy, like a corvette or mx5. But thats bmw, always aiming for grip. Only in this case they wanted to make sure everybody can drive it and nobody has to handle the rear, many people dont know what to do when the rear breaks out.
@@Krezo200 I'm 52 and grew up with old fords(UK Escort, Capri). Counter steer and Power... hold the sweet spot and have fun 😁😅🤣😂. Checked out the kw v3 coilovers and they will be a upgrade. Again thank you 😁
@@thescergie im happy i could help mate, enjoy your e89! its a great car, just drove mine this weekend. in the german forum are many ways to make the handling better, the kw v3 is the most expensive and best way. but there are things you can change for a couple of hundred euros or do it yourself if you are able to and it will change the car noticeably.

I had ABS fail, fitted second hand £30. Same part no. no coding.
BMW's convertible or not they all let water in
Might didn't till recent. Rear quarter window cocked over slightly, so reset it. First leak in 14 years.
Don't buy z4 !
