Adapted by Maximianno Cobra, from Shakespeare's "Timon of Athens", the film exposes the timeless challenge of social hypocrisy, disillusion and annihilation against the poetics of friendship, love, and beauty.
@@luangouveia4715Verrett remains unsurpassed in the role. No one before or after her has displayed such a wonderful palette of colours as well as vocal strength and security throughout the whole tessitura. Just one of those prodigious interpretations that represents the yardstick against which all others must be measured.
For those unfamiliar with post-WWII Italian theater, the legendary stage director Giorgio Strehler (1921-97) was a powerful presence both in spoken theater and opera. The four Strehler productions that I saw "live" are imprinted forever in my mind: Goldoni's Servant of Two Masters, Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio, Shakespeare's The Tempest and Pirandello's The Mountain Giants. While of course I am thankful that there is a visual record of this wonderful production, no video can ever begin to do justice to Strehler's incredible use of light and silhouette. A true magician of the theater!
Che bel lavoro! Grazie con tutto il cuore. Edizione magnifica, opera meravigliosa. Grazie ancora.
3:17, inizio coro streghe 6:27, scena banco e Macbeth 16:47, lettera (voce di Strehler) 22:14, Or tutti sorgete, cabaletta ripetuta senza abbellimenti 27:31, O donna mia 31:01, Sappia la sposa mia
Verrett was a force of nature. This was perhaps the peak of her career and, in truth, she's incomparable in this role. I wouldn't even mention the name of ET in relation to SV, the latter being in a class of its own: stratospheric.
Macbeth is often cited as Verdi's finest early opera. It is much more than that. It is a masterpiece in it's own right. In fact we don't see and hear such great ensemble scenes until Don Carlos, Aida and Otello. The singing in this production is absolutely outstanding. But the production is too stylized. The Met production with James Levine at the helm . Especially at the glorious ending to act 1, is superior.

I adore this production! Thank you a lot for sharing. A special thanks for the upscaled video.
Quella sera c'ero. Mai spettacolo d'opera fu più coinvolgente. Verrett, Abbado, Strehler magici.

I’d have crawled over broken glass and molten lava to hear this LIVE at La Scala. Absolutely sensational as is Verrett.

Agree about the stylization . . . AND the photography is really murky . . . but the singing is first-rate.

Et Luchetti est sans doute supérieur à Domingo. Ce chef d'oeuvre est un vrai délice.
