incredible acting from carreras and norman. and of course the divine presence of abbado. mammoth chorus, enrapturing, like the cries of a stadium. truly the gift that keeps on giving
Absolutely. However let’s don’t diminish the real talent that’s out there, they are the ones who aren’t hyped up to be something that they clearly are not. Won’t mention any names but they’re obvious to anyone who knows what excellence in performance is all about. 😊
Sometimes I forget that Ms Norman was a world class mezzo first. I think she brilliantly navigated the development of her voice perfectly. ❤

Every time there was something new in the wonderful Verdi Requiem conducted by Claudio Abbado. This great conductor found out the best from every singer, every musician, no matter how good they were. These soloists and all members of the choir and orchestra were exceptional. Unforgettable.
From my perspective this has to be one of the greatest performances of the one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. The soloists are simply magnificent, the chorus can scare the living hell out of you, the orchestra is spectacular and Claudio Abbado handles the whole affair just beautifully. Take an hour and forty minutes of your life to listen and absorb as much of this music as possible. Do it more than once. You won't regret it.
My goodness, what a quartet! I don't think I've heard a more beautiful reading of the Offertory. No singer trying to out sing the other. I've never been a huge fan of Carreras but he's perfect here, like a young man praying to God in desperation. Price is golden, silky and utterly effortless while Norman's outrageously brilliant instrument allows her to sing the higher register like a lyric soprano whilst still having a smoky contralto that could shake the earth at her disposal. Raimondi is his usual humble and musical self. Able to support with such ease and oozing out of the texture at opportune moments. This is truly glorious. All while the sound of the whole ensemble bounces off the gilded walls of the Usher Hall. I doubt there will be another Requiem like this for some time, if ever. It is so sad these two goddesses are no longer with us. I still find my self looking for recordings of Jessye that I've not yet heard. As for Abbado, a genius. I had the pleasure of working with him before his death and I'll never forget it.
The blend is out of this world. These four voices are a gift from God to all mankind! The orchestra was WOW! The choir was masterfully conducted. One of the best version of the Verdi Requiem I've ever heard... and I've sang it many, many times with a superlative auditioned choir, (Symphony Chorus) conductor, and orchestra. This is a feat of excellence.
This is a breathtaking, glorious performance! Kudos to the guest soloists, orchestra, choir, & that amazing conductor... How FORTUNATE I am to listen & watch this many times on UA-cam here in the USA in 2023, while it was performed in the UK, in l982. Thank you to all!
Norman is truly outstanding soprano. No annoying "scoops" into the pitches... she pegs each note. Great feeling and a beautifully controlled voice, at all dynamics. Wow.
One of the best performances of anything anywhere! Maestro Abbado and all simply magnificent. Mrs Norman simply magnificent! Her voice and interpretation, stellar. Her power almost covered the orchestra! Stunning performance! Goosebumps and tears.
For me It simply doesn't get better than this. Absolutely electrifying, committed and heartfelt live musicmaking. I remember watching the original broadcast in my early teens. I have friends in the choir and audience. Some no longer with us which makes rewatching all the more poignant. It has and will stay with me forever
I almost cried at the Price's "Libera me" performance. I felt the abbyss from where souls implore their salvation and it felt my heart and my soul hoping God for His answer.
I have listened to her sing Leibestrod by Wagner and Mahler’s Misterioso from Symphony No. 3 “O Mensch! Gib Ach!” On repeat for the last two days- I can’t get over it. Her phrasing the lushness of her voice her interpretation- divine. Oh and her Delilah is sublime as is her Carmen and her Dido???? Sends me. What a gift
Will there ever be a more beautiful Verdi Agnus Dei than the one combining Margaret Price and Jessye Norman in a seamless and sensitive flow of tone here?
Margaret Price was NOT a light Soprano!!! She sang Aida, Amelia, she was a big voice, aat least full liric. But because her vouce was so clear and her singing so clean you could think she was a light voice.
I see the difference now from R.F. and how different the sound is. It's funny how she was criticized for being so extra in this piece and someone like Price who has such a bigger instrument is so simple here. It's style
Remarkable performance of everyone, bu Abbado, Price and Raimondi are spectacular! Raimondi in the very low "Requiem aeternam" is not for the faint of heart. Kudos!!!
I always found the Raimondi sound to be very special. I remember few basses blessed with such a profound depth of tone with such a remarkably clear tone. What a beautiful sound.
i was there... 2 verdi requiems within 4 days...in heaven 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 what perhaps nobody knows?...jessye sang sometimes the soprano role✨ and dame margaret once the mezzo role (also under abbado)

Inolvidable por siempre.
incredible acting from carreras and norman. and of course the divine presence of abbado. mammoth chorus, enrapturing, like the cries of a stadium. truly the gift that keeps on giving
My husband was in the front row of the tenors!
Oh, the glory days where real seasoned singers and conductors handled the repertoire. Thankful for video.

Today is the 10th death anniversary of great Maestro Claudio Abbado.
R.I.P.🕯🎶🥀
OH MY - how the time flies.... I remember his last performances, especially of Mahler's 9th Symphony, we were fortunate to have him among us. ♥
May he rest in peace. 🙏🙏🙏

Don't forget that in1982 Carreras was about to leave for Seattle and be treated for his leukemia ! It certainly wasn't at his best !
Wow - what a comment 🙏🏽🙌🏽🥹💗
I was in the audience and my friend in the chorus. Fabulous!!!
A stellar quartet of singers and Abbado and the Edinburgh Festival chorus too! It’s magnificent . 51:08
Lucky you

Similar situation here Tanya. Had the honor of performing at Kennedy Center. This is by far the best recording I've every heard as well!
@@stephenstewart3774 Right? You understand what I mean.
Margaret Price😍😍😍😍
This is pure gold! Thank you for this!

Should I go to Fleming for 3 or 4 scoops or Baskin Robbins or CARVEL?
True that
Price is living the final words "Libera me domine" as if she HERSELF was asking God for mercy. OUTSTANDING.
Norman , what a voice …. She feels what she is singing …. How powerful , magnificent singing …… bravissima
Her voice reminds me of the Mexican contralto Oralia Dominguez.
A GODDES❤
One of the best performances of anything anywhere!
Maestro Abbado and all simply magnificent.
Mrs Norman simply magnificent! Her voice and interpretation, stellar.
Her power almost covered the orchestra!
Stunning performance!
Goosebumps and tears.
Грандиозно, торжественно и великолепно!
Jessye's powerful LOW D in her first aria, Liber scriptus,... gave me shivers!
What. A. Performance. Jessye Norman is out of this world.
Jesse Norman, with her big, voluptuous, golden bronze voice, just punches you in the gut. Brava!
What a great performance. The death of Abbado leave us without a great conductor
What a stupid thing to say.

In her prime Jessye Norman was untouchable.
One of my professors always called her Just Enormous. 😆 He also referred to Elizabeth Schwarzkopf as Betty Blackhead.
@@13blackcatzzz, your professor must’ve been an idiot.
Quelle merveille
@@13blackcatzzzand that was very rude and disrespectful of him...
May her memory be a blessing.
Потрясающе гениальная музыка. Слов нет..
I almost cried at the Price's "Libera me" performance. I felt the abbyss from where souls implore their salvation and it felt my heart and my soul hoping God for His answer.
BRAVO…Mr. Carreras! The other solo artists are no less than absolutely exceptional.
Jesse Norman is a miracle! She makes me whole every time I hear her.
I have listened to her sing Leibestrod by Wagner and Mahler’s Misterioso from Symphony No. 3 “O Mensch! Gib Ach!” On repeat for the last two days- I can’t get over it. Her phrasing the lushness of her voice her interpretation- divine.

One of the best ever performances. 4 superb soloists, choir and orchestra. Under arguably the greatest conductor of Verdi.
Wow what a line-up. Those were the days!
Will there ever be a more beautiful Verdi Agnus Dei than the one combining Margaret Price and Jessye Norman in a seamless and sensitive flow of tone here?
Qué bella versión. Jessye Norman, maravillosa. El coro, excelente.
Jessye Norman wow 🤩
Jessye, Margaret, and Jose. Whew!
outstanding performance
Splendida direzione, splendida esecuzione, splendidi i cantanti
Price had such a beautiful voice
what a wonderful Libera Me, impressive low notes for a such light and lyric soprano. Price🙏
Margaret Price was NOT a light Soprano!!! She sang Aida, Amelia, she was a big voice, aat least full liric. But because her vouce was so clear and her singing so clean you could think she was a light voice.
A "light and lyric soprano" who sang Isolde.
It was a compliment of mine …but ok U know it better for sure
man I love Margaret Price
beautiful Margret Price ! Tasteful singing by a radiant voice . This is how it should be.
I see the difference now from R.F. and how different the sound is. It's funny how she was criticized for being so extra in this piece and someone like Price who has such a bigger instrument is so simple here. It's style
@@smurf902 very nice said. This is the difference between a mediocre voice and a real sound based of a very good technic, we dont hear anymore.
I love Dame Margaret Price!!❤
This is just glorious. The quartet is inspired. Thank heaven it was recorded. 😇🙏❤️
The most beautiful Requiem in the history of music, together with Mozart's.
Paradisiaco! Celeste, sublime jessye Norman,Abbado Carreras
…incredibly in tune…beautifully phrased…
All 4 stars of lyric, operatic world, and the much regretted Abbado !
Jessye in the contralto rep sounds amazing too... This Liber Scriptus is great!
Magnificent Chorus...What a power !
This recording does no justice to such legendary and immortal voices. And Maestro Abbado…we are not worthy 🙏♥️ Just soooooo good.
The great trumpeter Maurice Murphy (1937-2010), with the goatee. He can be heard on all the Star Wars soundtracks
Also the flutist Peter Lloyd is also on the Star Wars soundtrack.
@@jayp2904It's the LSO in 1982 - surely most of them were on the soundtrack?
Grandiosa Insuperabile grazie Abbado , riposa in pace con gli angeli ❤Sergio

Sublime! This ranks alongside the 1964 Guilini London performance.
Breathtaking! Brilliant! ❤

Margaret Price, Jessye Norman etc.
PURA MARAVILLA DE VOCES
Jesse Norman’s voice reminds me somewhat of Oralia Dominguez contralto voice. The voice is powerful, dark, luscious and beautiful.
Que c'est beau!
Maravilloso.
The vocal stamina
Superbe cast !

Ruggero Raimondi as well
The Mastro is gone these 10 years. This is him at his best.

Welcome Opéra 😉
Il Sublime elevato al Divino.
Jessye Norman is God ❤
No, and specially here she is not.
Oh the hate! She is as close to God as I have heard- esp her Leider 🥹 sublime
It's exasperating to have the voices of Norman and Price suddenly interrupted by some stupid ad.
Same here! Hate those stupid adds
Pay for UA-cam premium it's worth it
How awful that we lost her
Благодарю
This doesn't have any rights to be this good vocally
Damn that legato in the Dies Irae! Damn! Legendary legato! Goodness gracious this is good playing...the singing is rife with intonation issues.
💚🙏😍
Norman barely looks at the score. It’s so completely embedded in her.
Great performance. Too bad the sound is so compressed. BTW, Margaret Price should precede Jessye Norman in the roster.
Some of the closeup shots of Leontyne Price at the end seem lipsynched. They may have been filmed afterwards and spliced in at a later time.
it's Margaret Price, and it was live! for me the greatest of all time performance!
Margaret Price, not Leontyne Price - though that would have been fabulous also!!!
Raimondi everywhere? Why?
