I'll never forget Allondra. I spoke to her about 4 years ago when she was at another orchestral posting. Expressive and talented, the orchestra and audience were captivated by her. You are lucky to have her next in Europe.
I've always said that this is one of the hardest symphonies for a drummer to perform. Holding the same rhythm for 15 minutes straight is brutal if you asked me. I think I'd mentally collapse within a few minutes of doing the same 10-15 beats over and over again. This is a job for AIs, not for humans. Mad respect for the drummers that have to perform Bolero and still pull it perfectly!
I think the same! And do this with others playing at your side more and more strong, his level of concentration is insane!! Certainly Ravel hated drummers!!

See the one with Dudamel....that one was about 17-18 minutes. I praise them both (and all drummers having experienced this one) though. Such strong focus.

My Grandmother, the real musician in my family, introduced me to this stunning piece when I was just a little kid (75 years ago). For this performance... Bravo indeed!
Jesus Christ, what was that???? I've played with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra for a very long time, we've played the Bolero with almost every famous conductor. And now there's this version ... and it's new, fresh, incredibly great dance music, a new composition by Ravel unlike anything I've ever heard. Let's all praise Alondra de la Parra! She's beyond amazing, she created with the WDR Orchestra a new masterpiece!
She's brilliant I love her enthusiasm it's so genuine. I'm curious what she played next. Poor drummer hope she went slow and low😂. Incredible tempo 15 minutes 😮😮😮🎉

I am repeating the name of this conductor so I can relate this performance to friends. Bolero has been a hot jewel for me since 1965. De la Parra has done something unique and wonderful here. Soloist given latitude for extra sensitivity. The drum is clearly present where with Bernstein it's less defined. De la Parra. De la Parra. De la Parra.
AMAZING!!! The way she has them really getting into this piece and the look of enjoyment. She has commanded them and they give it all they have. But hats off to the drummer who kept PERFECT time and rhythm for the whole 15 minutes. BRAVO!!!!
This is an absolute feast for the eyes, a symphony for the ears, food for the soul and a gift for the heart. Thank you for this exquisite experience where "separation" disappears and the orchestra flows in harmony and unity under the magnificent baton of Maestra de la Parra.
Always a favorite. I was a percussionist and drummer. I switched to hand drums a few years ago. Always loved "Bolero" because of the featuring of the drummer straight from the top and then the progression they are given. I still love snare, and could hammer one in an age when you never saw a GIRL in the drum pit. Played it all. Never have performed "Bolero", but will always adore Torvill and Dean for giving it to the world. Thanks, for being there Ravel.
In Miami, during the sixties and seventies, there was a radio station playing classical music exclusively. Bolero would play every so often. When it did, I'd stop what I was doing and imagine the piece to be the perfect background music for love-making, start to finish. Then, in '84, Torvill and Dean stunned the world with their interpretation for the Olympic ice dancing final skate. It was then I realized dance was also another form of love making. Thanks for the reminder...
At the end of this piece she is not just conducting the orchestra it's as if she's actrually drawing the music out of the orchestra. Fantastic performance

As always, I love this tune so much. I found one new fact out of this performance. She's the most beautiful conductor I've ever seen. Her facial impressions and motion give me a very good feeling like she is truly enjoying her job!
No matter which orchestra plays this tune, I'm always gobsmacked by the focus of the initial drummer, who has to maintain that same phrase throughout the whole performance, like a metronome, only getting louder, as the tune develops. One tiny distraction and the whole performance could fall apart. Simply outstanding discipline.
@@anabellagonzalezgarcia9696 I have almost skipped the video. I was not sure she could handle the sharp crescendo part . As a French ,I grew up with this music. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
This has always been one of my favorite pieces of all time. The way each instrument has their own little part to play and shine, and the incredible talent of that drummer to maintain that rhythm for 15 mins straight is amazing. Alondra always such a good and charismatic conductor, the way she has so much energy is so entertaining to see!!! Amazing WDR Orchestra, this is definitely one of my favorite interpretations of this masterpiece.
I'm sure that's what's meant John, but don't forget, this is US spelling, language changes in foreign parts, just thinking of Aftrikaans is an (xtreme) example
Superb performance by all the musicians!! The Conductor was a delight to watch as her mood changed with the tempo and volume, and the fluidity and grace of her movements.
May I add my voice to the praise of the conductor and musicians. But don’t leave out the recording technicians. They too have performed a masterpiece of clarity, balance and immediacy. Over the years there have been probably wonderful performances of Bolero sadly reduced to fair-to-middling recordings, because of inadequate audio equipment (and perhaps non-musical technicians). Happily, times change, I don’t know if this technical crew belongs to WDR, or Kölner Philharmonie, or parttime workers from the docks. But don’t let them get away! They are priceless.
Much respect to Alondra de la Parra. Watching her communicate with the orchestra was amazing. She used her baton, her eyes, her smile, her body movements. It was amazing, and the orchestra responded. They were so into the piece, it was incredible. I have become a fan of her and her talents.
Tell you something else ... Listening to Maurice Ravel's Bolero you find yourself in the company of some of the most sophisticated soulmates on the planet and their appreciation of an aesthetic. Love you guys ❤
Wonderful Wonderbar ,I started school in 1950 in war torn Southern England. The only instruments my school had were the 'Triangle' and the ''Tamberine', by 1955 I had progressed to the 'Recorder', I'm still progressing and admire greatly these wonderful musicians, Big Thank You for all your wonderful music. Great Stuff! ...... Pat. COLLINS
I love this piece. The way individual instruments dominate until the background takes over. I believe Ravel called this an etude, a study, and was amazed that it became so popular.
I saw once a philarmonic drummer playing this in London. The orchestra played it jointly with musicians from the army. The other drummer lost the tempo during almost all the time, and the philarmonic drummer kept it perfectly all the time in spite of that. Amazing power of concentration.
The only who should only be recognized for this is the snare drummer. To play that long at a steady tempo takes slot of concentration. So Bravo to the snare drummer :)
Dude, I've played this piece and it is difficult for everyone! It's in 3/4 time, which can be very tricky when played at such a slow tempo. If you play one of the solos, you have to sit around for umpteen measures of rest and come in at the right time. If you mess up counting the rests before your entrance, you're up a creek without a paddle. Plus, the solo lines are very tricky, rhythm-wise. When I performed it, I played the soprano saxophone solo which comes after the tenor saxophone solo. Well, in my performance, the tenor saxophone player mis-played the final two measures of his solo and ended up finishing two beats too soon. If I had been just following him, I would have come in two beats too soon which would have ruined the piece. But thank goodness I was counting rests instead, and I came in at the right time.
This piece is hard for everyone, not just the drummer. Everybody comments how the snare drummer is so awesome (and yes, it is very hard to play the snare part), but I've also played this piece just like @jpsned and everyone should get a fair share of praise too. The horns play along with the snare during the middle of the piece, and it is incredibly hard to do that. The Bassoons do it too. In a lot of rehearsals, they could barely play since it was so hard, but they got it in the end thankfully. Also, the strings (cellos) start at the beginning of the song too and they play the same thing the whole song just like the drummer. I played the timpani part, which repeats a lot just like almost every other part. The snare drummer SHOULDN'T be the only person recognized for Bolero. There is so much hard work put into the piece by every instrument!
@@jpsned I'm a new convert to classical from old school rock and country. Just wondering if someone like me would even notice a mistake like that? This performance answered my question of does the conductor matter. She is perfection in my opinion.
@@Marvinfj32 You would most likely notice mistakes because anything deviating from 100% perfection will be noticeable, as the flow of the music will be interrupted. And yes, the conductor is absolutely necessary, especially in a piece like this. I have conducted and have found that when I'm conducting a slow, sensitive piece like this, my soul and the souls of my musicians become one.
Beautiful classic music at its very best the musicians deserve a lot of credit just image what a practice is before a real live concert you can do my job and I can't do your job love and appreciate you guys thanks you guys rock let's stop and honor this moment ! Joe
This is one of the most impressive performances of Bolero that I have seen and heard. Truly magnificent. The mood changes at around 7:30 when it seems that the whole orchestra has Ravel under control and they *know* they have it under control. You can see the relief and confidence that even the drummer, yes the drummer, is smiling. And he knows he has to keep the beat for another 7 minutes............ Alondra de la Parra is unbelievable. It is like getting a ballet dancer turned classical actress to conduct. Around the 12:00 mark, she is almost daring the musicians (they respond 13:20) and quite literally lets her hair down at 13:40. Her performance is subtle, elegant and calming. I suspect that she would be equally at ease with a group of completely uncoordinated 8th-grade kids. Around 8:45 and 13:00, even the harp looks impressive. This is the performance for which I would have wished to have VIP tickets that offered a behind-the-scene tour where you get to meet each of the performers and congratulate them.

The conductor is an absolute joy to watch.
she's so into it she's almost intoxicating to watch! amazing indeed
That perfomance certainly made my neck hairs stand to attention, one happy conductor.
@robertmccarthy3731, yes absolutely, and he is female 😉
DEI ?
As always, I love this tune so much. I found one new fact out of this performance. She's the most beautiful conductor I've ever seen. Her facial impressions and motion give me a very good feeling like she is truly enjoying her job!
Wish they could have let the video run longer after the end, to see the audience, orchestra , and her.
Dem stimme ich aus vollem Herzen zu!
Vielen Dank! 🥰

Beatiful. And I am not going to lie, the conductor is astonishing.
"DIRECTORA"
Magnificent treatment of the one-of-a-kind “Bolero.” Nice to hear it played so expertly.
The conductor is a mighty queen, leading her royal army into a great battle!
Ella es nuestro orgullo mexicano. ❤🇲🇽
Lol😂😂
And very nice looking! From USA Ohio
Thank you very much! ❤
It is nice to hear that you like our interpretation.
I would build a robot to play that drum part. 15 miinutes of the same thing would be too much to bear. Of course it is played so beautifully here.
How about that flute keeping rhythm with the drummer, yikes. Brutal. So beautiful.
Did you mean FAVOURITE?
I'm sure that's what's meant John, but don't forget, this is US spelling, language changes in foreign parts, just thinking of Aftrikaans is an (xtreme) example
Ich könnte das stundenlang hören, einfach fantastisch.
Eine wunderbare Dirigentin mit Charisma!
Vielen Dank!
Freut uns, dass es Ihnen gefällt 😊
Die Dirigentin ist aus México.
Viva 🇲🇽 lindo y querido. ❤️
❤❤❤
Muhteşemsiniz❤
Eu tbm ouvindo me sinto flutuando é esplêndido
Gern geschehen! 🤗
Hätte es gerne auf LP. @@WDRKlassik
Correction: This is mostly likely the very best rendition of Ravel's Bolero yet to hear.
Thank you 💕
Superb performance by all the musicians!!
Thank you very much for your nice feedback!
The recording crew was indeed a team from the WDR.
Wish we could have heard more of the applause and recognition of the orchestra (and the snare drummer!).
How I agree !!!
Every chime, and boom is as clear as a bell !!
She adds some passion to an already passionate song. Beautiful maestra
Extraordinaria ! Alondra de la Parra ! Exquisita Directora ! Felicidades ....😊😃
Much respect to Alondra de la Parra. Watching her communicate with the orchestra was amazing. She used her baton, her eyes, her smile, her body movements. It was amazing, and the orchestra responded. They were so into the piece, it was incredible. I have become a fan of her and her talents.
Thank you very much! ❤
Concuerdo al 100% !!!
Tell you something else ... Listening to Maurice Ravel's Bolero you find yourself in the company of some of the most sophisticated soulmates on the planet and their appreciation of an aesthetic. Love you guys ❤
Thank you! 🤗
I loved every note, every beat, every direction, every moment! ❤🎶
Thank you very much! 🤗
Great Stuff! ...... Pat. COLLINS
Our pleasure!
We are happy that you like it.
Absolutely wonderful!!!! I love this piece, but this performance is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. I got goosebumps!!
Thanks so much!
Very beautiful tenor sax solo
Thank you, we're glad you like it😊.
Wonderful! Conductor is excerlent. Of course beautiful.Visual.
Cannot overspeak about my admiration for Alondra!! Brillant / talented and super capable!! Shall be up there with all the greats with time!!
I love this piece. The way individual instruments dominate until the background takes over. I believe Ravel called this an etude, a study, and was amazed that it became so popular.
We're glad that you enjoy this piece 🤗

Une des plus belles interprétations du Boléro !
Vraiment remarquable ! Bravissimo !
Merci!
Beautiful classic music at its very best the musicians deserve a lot of credit just image what a practice is before a real live concert you can do my job and I can't do your job love and appreciate you guys thanks you guys rock let's stop and honor this moment ! Joe
Impecable y poderosa.

❤ INSANELY BEAUTIFUL ❤
❤ MASTERPIECE ❤
❤ SKIN-DEEP EMOTION ❤
Thank you! ❤
Thank you so much for your nice feedback ❤
It is very nice to hear that you enjoyed our performance so much!
This is one of the most impressive comments that i have seen on UA-cam.
You know your stuff. Respect.

The conductor kept it all together! With magnificent results!!!! Absolutely fantastic
Does it get any better than this? A classic beauty! My heart doth rejoice! Thank you so much!
Thank you for your compliment! 🥰
Just magnifique! A pleasure to listen and watch from beginning to end. ❤
Thank you! 🥰
I am in tears! This is the best example of this world's achievements. The music of a genius played by the phenomenal orchestra! I am at awe with the drummers who hold the whole music structure for 15 minutes! Bravo!
Thank you very much 🤗
Faantaastic. It is one of the most sensual pieces of music ever written. Wonderful orchestra and conductor.
Thank you very much! 🤗
BRAVO! ❤️

And what an orchestra and what a conductor! All of them are doing very well. Thank you.

Absolutely agree with your comments. A really very fine performance indeed !
One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. Beautifully played by the orchestra. I loved watching the conductor throughout the performance. She seemed to be loving her role. 🥰
Thank you! :)
