Dude, I've played this piece and it is difficult for everyone! It's in 3/4 time, which can be very tricky when played at such a slow tempo. If you play one of the solos, you have to sit around for umpteen measures of rest and come in at the right time. If you mess up counting the rests before your entrance, you're up a creek without a paddle. Plus, the solo lines are very tricky, rhythm-wise. When I performed it, I played the soprano saxophone solo which comes after the tenor saxophone solo. Well, in my performance, the tenor saxophone player mis-played the final two measures of his solo and ended up finishing two beats too soon. If I had been just following him, I would have come in two beats too soon which would have ruined the piece. But thank goodness I was counting rests instead, and I came in at the right time.
This piece is hard for everyone, not just the drummer. Everybody comments how the snare drummer is so awesome (and yes, it is very hard to play the snare part), but I've also played this piece just like @jpsned and everyone should get a fair share of praise too. The horns play along with the snare during the middle of the piece, and it is incredibly hard to do that. The Bassoons do it too. In a lot of rehearsals, they could barely play since it was so hard, but they got it in the end thankfully. Also, the strings (cellos) start at the beginning of the song too and they play the same thing the whole song just like the drummer. I played the timpani part, which repeats a lot just like almost every other part. The snare drummer SHOULDN'T be the only person recognized for Bolero. There is so much hard work put into the piece by every instrument!
@@jpsned I'm a new convert to classical from old school rock and country. Just wondering if someone like me would even notice a mistake like that? This performance answered my question of does the conductor matter. She is perfection in my opinion.
@@Marvinfj32 You would most likely notice mistakes because anything deviating from 100% perfection will be noticeable, as the flow of the music will be interrupted. And yes, the conductor is absolutely necessary, especially in a piece like this. I have seen performances of Bolero where both the orchestra and conductor seem totally bored with this piece that they have probably played more times than they care to remember. Not so here! They managed to bring new life to this old stand-by. You can see the energy between Alondra de la Parra and the orchestra... It is absolutely infectious. May I add my voice to the praise of the conductor and musicians. But don’t leave out the recording technicians. They too have performed a masterpiece of clarity, balance and immediacy. At the end of this piece she is not just conducting the orchestra it's as if she's actrually drawing the music out of the orchestra. Fantastic performance
Today we celebrate Father's Day in Brazil. My dad passed away in 2020 of covid disease. Ravel's Bolero was one of his favorites song. He introduced me to it when I was a child, around six or seven years old. I'm 45 now. This stunning orchestra made me cry today
And each musicians' performance seems richer for their "dancing," their "body language," expressed with their chosen instrument. Needless to say, Maestra Alonda de la Parra, performs wonderfully throughout!
This has always been one of my favorite pieces of all time. The way each instrument has their own little part to play and shine, and the incredible talent of that drummer to maintain that rhythm for 15 mins straight is amazing. Alondra always such a good and charismatic conductor, the way she has so much energy is so entertaining to see!!! Amazing WDR Orchestra, this is definitely one of my favorite interpretations of this masterpiece.
I'm sure that's what's meant John, but don't forget, this is US spelling, language changes in foreign parts, just thinking of Aftrikaans is an (xtreme) example
As always, I love this tune so much. I found one new fact out of this performance. She's the most beautiful conductor I've ever seen. Her facial impressions and motion give me a very good feeling like she is truly enjoying her job!
What energy, what energy, what energy. Best rendition of Bolero I have seen and heard so far. Simply the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On a lighter note - along with her baton, her hair was also superbly giving directions. Superb, altogether.
Always a favorite. I was a percussionist and drummer. I switched to hand drums a few years ago. Always loved "Bolero" because of the featuring of the drummer straight from the top and then the progression they are given. I still love snare, and could hammer one in an age when you never saw a GIRL in the drum pit. Played it all. Never have performed "Bolero", but will always adore Torvill and Dean for giving it to the world. Thanks, for being there Ravel.
In Miami, during the sixties and seventies, there was a radio station playing classical music exclusively. Bolero would play every so often. When it did, I'd stop what I was doing and imagine the piece to be the perfect background music for love-making, start to finish. Then, in '84, Torvill and Dean stunned the world with their interpretation for the Olympic ice dancing final skate. It was then I realized dance was also another form of love making. Thanks for the reminder...
This is one of the most impressive performances of Bolero that I have seen and heard. Truly magnificent. The mood changes at around 7:30 when it seems that the whole orchestra has Ravel under control and they *know* they have it under control. You can see the relief and confidence that even the drummer, yes the drummer, is smiling. And he knows he has to keep the beat for another 7 minutes............ Alondra de la Parra is unbelievable. It is like getting a ballet dancer turned classical actress to conduct. Around the 12:00 mark, she is almost daring the musicians (they respond 13:20) and quite literally lets her hair down at 13:40. Her performance is subtle, elegant and calming. I suspect that she would be equally at ease with a group of completely uncoordinated 8th-grade kids. Around 8:45 and 13:00, even the harp looks impressive. This is the performance for which I would have wished to have VIP tickets that offered a behind-the-scene tour where you get to meet each of the performers and congratulate them.

Oh, my. The absolute precision and perfection demonstrated here by each performer under the baton of Maestra de la Parra (hope I got that right) is beyond words to describe. Each solo was a grand performance all its own complemented by the orchestra. Then, the entire orchestra rose to define absolute enchantment. Thank you to the camera crew for letting us see each member shine so beautifully and for all who brought us this incredible performance. How fortunate are so many of us around the world to be able to behold such a glorious work of art.
"Glorieuse" , je ne crois pas mais fascinante, envoûtante, certainement. Le côté glorieux chez Ravel, on le trouve dans son orchestration des Tableaux d'une exposition de Moussorski : la Grande Porte de Kiev où là, pour être glorieux, c'est glorieux ! 😉
A mesmerizing performance, truly wonderful. Also, kudos to the recording engineers and sound people. This is one of the best recordings of an orchestra I've ever heard. Every instrument sounded fully alive, and you could hear the distinctive individual voice of each musician during their solo. Fantastic job.
Only Ravel is to be credited for that. Every thing is written in his scores with such clarity and detailed explanations that no proper interpretation differs from any other. As a matter of fact, the conductor is not even useful in this piece : the drummer does the job. Except for dynamics, of course.
@Mission linguistique Francophone What you say may be true, but I was referencing the actual recording of the performance itself. Doesn't matter how good the interpretation is if it is recorded poorly. This sounds so good I thought it deserved mention.

Ich mag es auch sehr
Alondra de la Parra is beyond belief! I heart this with Karajan and his substitutes. Best ever

One of the most amazing pieces of music of all time
We're glad that you like it 😊
Exactly the oppposte
At the end of this piece she is not just conducting the orchestra it's as if she's actrually drawing the music out of the orchestra. Fantastic performance
Today we celebrate Father's Day in Brazil. My dad passed away in 2020 of covid disease. Ravel's Bolero was one of his favorites song. He introduced me to it when I was a child, around six or seven years old. I'm 45 now. This stunning orchestra made me cry today
Best wishes 🖤
I love the way the conductor show movement and expression. You know they love what they are doing. 🎼🎹

@@WDRKlassik😂😂😂😂
Interesting to contrast her style with Barenboim's 2014 BBC Proms performance, where he essentially does nothing for the first 4-5 minutes.
Merveilleux!
De acuerdo con todos los comentarios.Inpactante
Pretty stunning performance. I've watched this multiple times and am still amazed.
Thank you! 🤗
What impresses is me is the fact that every single member of the orchestra is absolutely focused and enjoying it at the same time
And each musicians' performance seems richer for their "dancing," their "body language," expressed with their chosen instrument.
Thank you very much! ❤
It is nice to hear that you like our interpretation.
I would build a robot to play that drum part. 15 miinutes of the same thing would be too much to bear. Of course it is played so beautifully here.
How about that flute keeping rhythm with the drummer, yikes. Brutal. So beautiful.
Did you mean FAVOURITE?
I'm sure that's what's meant John, but don't forget, this is US spelling, language changes in foreign parts, just thinking of Aftrikaans is an (xtreme) example
As always, I love this tune so much. I found one new fact out of this performance. She's the most beautiful conductor I've ever seen. Her facial impressions and motion give me a very good feeling like she is truly enjoying her job!
Wish they could have let the video run longer after the end, to see the audience, orchestra , and her.
Dem stimme ich aus vollem Herzen zu!
What energy, what energy, what energy. Best rendition of Bolero I have seen and heard so far. Simply the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On a lighter note - along with her baton, her hair was also superbly giving directions. Superb, altogether.
Thank you! ❤
Nice to hear that you enjoyed it.
The best example of what a conductor means to an orchestra.
Bravo Alondra de la Parra.
👏👏
Ich könnte das stundenlang hören, einfach fantastisch.
Eine wunderbare Dirigentin mit Charisma!

always nice to hear again, and again.
Thank you! 😊
Thank you so much for your nice feedback ❤
It is very nice to hear that you enjoyed our performance so much!
This is one of the most impressive comments that i have seen on UA-cam.

Warum gibt es eigentlich so wenige Dirigentinnen ? Diese Dirigentin ist große Klasse.
Another brilliant Mexican musician. Hope Alondra is named the next conductor for OSN. We want her, here, where she belongs. Viva México, cab...

Sublime, elegant. A beautiful, perfect rendition. Loving every second of it!

Ravel - Great Master of orchestration.
Even the conductor gives her full energy playing ravel bolero.
My Grandmother, the real musician in my family, introduced me to this stunning piece when I was just a little kid (75 years ago). For this performance... Bravo indeed!

Merveilleux. Merveilleuse musique
Thanks a lot! We are happy that you enjoyed it so much. 😃
❤😊
In agreement..I thank you for your thoughts.
"Glorieuse" , je ne crois pas mais fascinante, envoûtante, certainement.
Le côté glorieux chez Ravel, on le trouve dans son orchestration des Tableaux d'une exposition de Moussorski : la Grande Porte de Kiev où là, pour être glorieux, c'est glorieux ! 😉
Tremendous , the layer upon layer building to the crescendo at the end is just wonderful :)
Einer der most breathtaking compositions der Musikgeschichte.
Thanks for that!
