I found it so hilarious how John Krazinski has been getting hounded by MCU fans for years now to play Mr. Fantastic, and he kept saying he had no interest in doing it. So when he FINALLY gave in, they killed him after like not even 5 minutes of screen time. I literally burst out laughing in the theater.
From a comic book fan on UA-cam, it's a norm to kill off characters from alternate universes, due to them actually getting the chance to kill characters off and there's no way they'd be able to make stories out of them.
Agreed, absolute waste of the premise. We should have seen 20 different universes in detail, met alternative actors in as iconic characters (a universe with anthropological entities nominatively arranged, like Howard the duck, Rocket, cosmo, maybe wolverine playing Wolverine complete with yellow spandex) or just gender swaps or robots or Lego.
whilst i agree, this served the story better. plus ya know marvel ahs a plan, and that plan is we're gonna hold you back on some of your creative decisions because of continuity stuff.

My major gripe with the multiverse is that it makes everything disposable. "Here's a brand new version of something, or some fan service - now watch us kill it off almost instantly with no over arching consequences"
That's a big concern of mine, too, but they started on this path with Infinity War. The MCU's strength was having long-term consequences, an advantage over comic books. Now it's just like comic books, disposable continuities to be endlessly rehashed until people stop caring.
I've never liked multiverse or time travel stories tbh. Just the idea that anything that can be accomplished can be effortlessly undone is not very satisfying in a plot.

Hell I haven't watched a Marvel movie since the original Avengers movie but I have IMAX tickets to this cause it's Sam Raimi's visual aptitude on a gigantic screen. Informative... seems like total and utter BS to go from evidenced factoid that there WERE easter eggs in Rocky Horror, and then go to a whole different context of video games where one thing one time was CALLED "an easter egg hunt", like that's the first thing in history where that ever happened. OBVIOUSLY Rocky Horror was also CALLED an easter egg hunt if there WERE easter eggs. Sounds like some obtuse wikimedia "citation needed" standard being used, where an obvious fact isn't admitted because you couldn't name a guy who said the obviously true thing. The fun creative aspects from Raimi carried the movie a ton. Elizabeth also did a fantastic job with her slasher villain character. She stole the show for me. What the most grating aspect of the movie was marvels input. All the non stop exposition that was required, just so they fit into the larger puzzle.
Yeah anytime Raimi was just getting to do his thing and do wacky horror bullshit the enjoyment of the movie would spike significantly. And she definitely seemed to have fun playing those horror scenes.
I was hoping that half way through this review there'd be a "universe swap" where Mike and Jay were in different outfits and were reviewing Everything Everywhere All At Once.

I really enjoyed the musical notes fight. I always wanted the magic people to use their environment in their finger waggling & it’s always just orange beams & circles. The notes were great.
@@melonhead2477 that was the best part. they actually tried to explore a theme in the effects instead of just throwing a "music notes" skin on their standard magic missile spell. the reactive music was very fitting and the conclusion of the sequence actually followed very loose principles of acoustics. to me it was honestly the best scene in the movie.
The biggest problem I have with this movie is that there are no rules at all about what the protagonist and antagonist are capable of. Whenever a rule is established it’s promptly broken. There is no tension at all because either of them can just do some random unimaginable shit to pull themselves out of any situation whatsoever. Then, the one time, the only time in the whole movie where it seemed like something had consequences, when the book was destroyed, a new book is revealed 10 seconds later
No Way Home's spider dudes being really interested in the fact that Spider-Man went to space and fought Thanos was amazing I thought. No matter how self referencing.
Seeing Mike's joy over having enjoyed Spider-Man after Picard brings such a smile to my face. I felt so bad for him after his devastating conclusion to the last Picard review.

Ya I'm surprised he didn't mention it either since Raimi loves to have his Bruce Campbell cameos in his movies. The cameo was quite funny in this one too.
Yeah the fact that the zombie character with souls for a cloak turned out to not be a bad guy, but rather the protagonist possessing an alternate self's dead body was a pretty neat subversion of expectation. And it's Sam Raimi, of course he recognizes how goofy the effect looks, he's banking on you laughing at the close ups and the zombie speaking normally while not having lips. Campbell cameo was great of course. I dunno if it's a spoiler really but the "end" of his cameo was excellent. Also another Raimi easter egg was a floating '73 Oldsmobile in the destroyed universe.
There was an age when movie special effects were so limited the title and poster could conjure up far more amazing in the mind's eye than the movie ever could. Today with seamless special effects and talented creators with amazing ideas, this still holds true today.
The special effects these days are exhausting to look at. It's just so much visual noise. To paraphrase the Bard, 'a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing'.

Completely agree. It feels like there is a much better movie here rather than something that felt rushed especially after seeing the recent superior multiverse film. I also think they are completely right that they needed to show Wanda descent in the film and exploring the multiverse as Wanda/Strange try to train America (hate that name). It would have been better if it was a Scarlet Witch from another universe, but then Wanda turns into the Scarlet Witch in order to protect her family across the multiverse.
I imagine a bunch of Disney/Marvel executives being like "Aw man, audiences are gonna lose it over our multiverse movie, there's gonna be nothing else like it this year" and then EEAAO came out and everyone loved it and all those execs were just like ".....Fuck."

Mike's failure re: Easter Eggs is particularly surprising, considering that he not only talked for like 3 hours about the movie "Ready Player One", which literally, visually breaks down the Easter Egg origin story, but he ALSO stated that he read the associated book, which goes into even MORE literal and [excruciatingly] detailed discussion. Steve Wright's story is centerfold and pretty much the whole point of both the movie and book. Senility is a bitch!
That book was awful and forgettable. Its the rantings of a basement dwelling man child. Like he spends the entire story explaining how escapism and nostalgia have left the world crippled and full of idiots who'd rather play in 1980's themed nostalgia, than fix the world's problems. And how people can't let go of obsession, and even other characters criticize protagonist boy for being a huge nerd, and too obsessed. And when it comes time to land the metaphorical plane, the author is like "So with that all in mind, we force everyone to log out one day a week, but otherwise isn't it great that now we ca continue to delve into hedonistic nostalgia without corporate greed to force us back into the real world? Yay, all of our obsessions are validated!" It's an absolute popcorn fart of literature. I read the book, watched the movie, and my brain STILL refuses to memorize protagonist boy's name. It's like Artemis Pendragon Percval or something a YA novel would doodle in the margins lol.
Maybe Wanda wasn't really redeemed in WandsVision. She never really faces the consequences for her actions and in the post credits was using the Darkhold.....
If that was true Westview would still be enslaved by her. Once she became the Scarlet Witch she was powerful enough to stop anyone else coming in and stopping her.

I think a lot of people didn't see the end credits scene of Wandavision. It sets up this entire movie as Wanda having moved on from creating a fake town to be with her fictional family to actually finding her fictional family using the Dark Hold. If it weren't for Harkness she might have eventually been "redeemed" properly.

This is the arguement about do you need to watch the Disney+ series for the movie MCU. They could have done more backstory, but that's what Wandavision showed. Watching the series we know how she got to where it picks up in the movie. Loki is the establishment of the multiverse. The next Captain America movie will be Sam as CA, and that series shows how that evolved.
@@Crusader2012 I wouldn't disagree. It showed she was mourning the death of Vision. But it also introduced the boys, and the darkhold. Then at the end she was looking for her boys in the multiverse using the darkhold. If her character comes back, her behavior will be 100% blamed on the darkhold.
Despite having seen this movie only a few months ago, I've forgotten 80% of it. Although I haven't seen the original Doctor Strange for a few years, I still remember 80% of it. The Marvel movies are simply an assembly line of cookie cutter product now and have been for years.

I'm surprised that you guys reviewed this one, but I love hearing from you. My take away was that Jennifer Garner couldn't be with Dr Strange, because he had control issues(he's always got to be the "one holding the knife"). And the movie was him being confronted by his infinite selves all of whom were control freaks and bringing ruin to every reality. This Strange finally learns to trust and support others by the end of the movie. How effective the movie was at building the story? I'm not sure, but that's my take on it.
I saw this the other day. The theatre cheered when Jim from The Office showed up. I was like "what?" The picard came out, no one made a sound. So i had to give a wooo solo
My theater and I did the same exact reaction. I know for me, seeing Jim was truly a shocking unexpected moment. But then right afterwards, we get Patrick and he kinda gets absorbed into the overall moment. I was excited for Patrick too, but I wasn't really finished being excited for Jim, if that makes sense. And Jim was more unexpected than Patrick.
The constant creativity with these gags, especially with most of it seeming improv, is so wonderful. The wrong bit had me laughing out loud. So did the ending “I told her p 9 f12”

I do think they have lost it. All the crypto currency and covid skits were unfunny and bad. They skip and don't review most movies. Even mock their viewers like with Dune lol. Mike seems barely awake and aware most of the time. Most of their jokes are on the "David Carradine? FUNNY SEX SUICIDE!" level with obnoxious self congratulations which stopped being funny or ironic years ago. That's ok though. Maybe it's just time to move on.

My major gripe with the multiverse is that it makes everything disposable. "Here's a brand new version of something, or some fan service - now watch us kill it off almost instantly with no over arching consequences"

That's a big concern of mine, too, but they started on this path with Infinity War. The MCU's strength was having long-term consequences, an advantage over comic books. Now it's just like comic books, disposable continuities to be endlessly rehashed until people stop caring.

Hell I haven't watched a Marvel movie since the original Avengers movie but I have IMAX tickets to this cause it's Sam Raimi's visual aptitude on a gigantic screen. Even through the prism of a very corporate IP that has to be worth a watch.

The final act being an explosive dumpster fire is just marvel being marvel.
He edited all of the “boring” talking scenes. The CGI battles were rendered three years ago.

My favourite part was when Black Bolt went to speak and Rich Evans voice saying "AAAIIIDS!" came out.
The fun creative aspects from Raimi carried the movie a ton. Elizabeth also did a fantastic job with her slasher villain character. She stole the show for me. What the most grating aspect of the movie was marvels input. All the non stop exposition that was required, just so they fit into the larger puzzle.
Yeah anytime Raimi was just getting to do his thing and do wacky horror bullshit the enjoyment of the movie would spike significantly. And she definitely seemed to have fun playing those horror scenes.
Shame they ruined her character who is supposed to be an Avenger.

@@melonhead2477 that was the best part. they actually tried to explore a theme in the effects instead of just throwing a "music notes" skin on their standard magic missile spell. the reactive music was very fitting and the conclusion of the sequence actually followed very loose principles of acoustics. to me it was honestly the best scene in the movie.

The biggest problem I have with this movie is that there are no rules at all about what the protagonist and antagonist are capable of. Whenever a rule is established it’s promptly broken. There is no tension at all because either of them can just do some random unimaginable shit to pull themselves out of any situation whatsoever.
Then, the one time, the only time in the whole movie where it seemed like something had consequences, when the book was destroyed, a new book is revealed 10 seconds later

Yeah the fact that the zombie character with souls for a cloak turned out to not be a bad guy, but rather the protagonist possessing an alternate self's dead body was a pretty neat subversion of expectation. And it's Sam Raimi, of course he recognizes how goofy the effect looks, he's banking on you laughing at the close ups and the zombie speaking normally while not having lips.
Campbell cameo was great of course. I dunno if it's a spoiler really but the "end" of his cameo was excellent. Also another Raimi easter egg was a floating '73 Oldsmobile in the destroyed universe.

There was an age when movie special effects were so limited the title and poster could conjure up far more amazing in the mind's eye than the movie ever could. Today with seamless special effects and talented creators with amazing ideas, this still holds true today.
The special effects these days are exhausting to look at. It's just so much visual noise. To paraphrase the Bard, 'a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing'.
I hope the "Wrong" stamp slowly coming in while Mike is fact-checked is a recurring bit. There's something hilariously tragic about it.

Really hoping they do a video on Everything Everywhere all at Once. That movie had all the creativity I wished this movie had.
Dr Strange took a major hit because I saw a far superior multiverse movie the night before: Everything Everywhere All At Once.
I think what made that story work (besides much better writing) is that Michelle Yeoh's character got to spend time in all those other universes.
Completely agree. It feels like there is a much better movie here rather than something that felt rushed especially after seeing the recent superior multiverse film.
I also think they are completely right that they needed to show Wanda descent in the film and exploring the multiverse as Wanda/Strange try to train America (hate that name). It would have been better if it was a Scarlet Witch from another universe, but then Wanda turns into the Scarlet Witch in order to protect her family across the multiverse.

It is sad, but slightly wholesome to see Jay ignoring Mike’s early onset dementia when Mike cannot remember who Rachel McAdams is.
In Mike's defense, these white ladies all do look alike.
This will sound like I’m being sarcastic, but I truly love watching an old man with dementia try to recall the details of a comic book multiverse movie.
Mike's failure re: Easter Eggs is particularly surprising, considering that he not only talked for like 3 hours about the movie "Ready Player One", which literally, visually breaks down the Easter Egg origin story, but he ALSO stated that he read the associated book, which goes into even MORE literal and [excruciatingly] detailed discussion. Steve Wright's story is centerfold and pretty much the whole point of both the movie and book.

Ready Player One is that forgettable
Eh, I think Ready Player One gets a little too much hate. It's forgettable, but it's a harmless bit of fun nonsense that has some cool moments.
I think he was a bit drunk in this episode, which would explain a lot. =)
That book was awful and forgettable. Its the rantings of a basement dwelling man child. Like he spends the entire story explaining how escapism and nostalgia have left the world crippled and full of idiots who'd rather play in 1980's themed nostalgia, than fix the world's problems. And how people can't let go of obsession, and even other characters criticize protagonist boy for being a huge nerd, and too obsessed. And when it comes time to land the metaphorical plane, the author is like "So with that all in mind, we force everyone to log out one day a week, but otherwise isn't it great that now we ca continue to delve into hedonistic nostalgia without corporate greed to force us back into the real world? Yay, all of our obsessions are validated!"
It's an absolute popcorn fart of literature. I read the book, watched the movie, and my brain STILL refuses to memorize protagonist boy's name. It's like Artemis Pendragon Percval or something a YA novel would doodle in the margins lol.

I think a lot of people didn't see the end credits scene of Wandavision. It sets up this entire movie as Wanda having moved on from creating a fake town to be with her fictional family to actually finding her fictional family using the Dark Hold. If it weren't for Harkness she might have eventually been "redeemed" properly.
I live for the edits where someone is proven wrong after being so confident before, this and the "tums festival" will live rent free in my head forever.

This is the arguement about do you need to watch the Disney+ series for the movie MCU. They could have done more backstory, but that's what Wandavision showed. Watching the series we know how she got to where it picks up in the movie. Loki is the establishment of the multiverse. The next Captain America movie will be Sam as CA, and that series shows how that evolved.

Despite having seen this movie only a few months ago, I've forgotten 80% of it. Although I haven't seen the original Doctor Strange for a few years, I still remember 80% of it. The Marvel movies are simply an assembly line of cookie cutter product now and have been for years.
Jay being the one to mention Star Trek first is some fun role-reversal.

My take away was that Jennifer Garner couldn't be with Dr Strange, because he had control issues(he's always got to be the "one holding the knife"). And the movie was him being confronted by his infinite selves all of whom were control freaks and bringing ruin to every reality. This Strange finally learns to trust and support others by the end of the movie. How effective the movie was at building the story? I'm not sure, but that's my take on it.
I love it when Jay pretends to know what he's talking about. Like not even a knock against him I genuinely love it.

I know for me, seeing Jim was truly a shocking unexpected moment. But then right afterwards, we get Patrick and he kinda gets absorbed into the overall moment.

I do think they have lost it. All the crypto currency and covid skits were unfunny and bad. They skip and don't review most movies. Even mock their viewers like with Dune lol. Mike seems barely awake and aware most of the time. Most of their jokes are on the "David Carradine? FUNNY SEX SUICIDE!" level with obnoxious self congratulations which stopped being funny or ironic years ago.
