I think the hotel sets look smaller on purpose. It gives it that sense of revisiting a place as an adult that you were at as a child. When we are children everything seems so big and vast, and once we are grown we are able to see them proportionally. I think that was a genius touch.
To be fair, I would say that parasite is more about the codependent parasitical relationship between classes and not so much a commentary on just how one class looks at the other. Which is good, because we already have enough movies that boil down to rich people evil and poor people good.
@@Y-two-K Sort of... the prevalent depiction Hollywood has is rich people don’t do crimes, whereas the ultra-rich are either driven to ultra-violent crimes or sometimes being crime-fighting vigilantes. This is all unrealistic, and usually lazy as they are rehashing old characters. Personally, I loved Parasite for the soundtrack most of all. Luckily I got to see it in theaters just before the lockdown.
@@justsomeguywithsunglasses8418not totally about that. There are many different themes and motifs in Joker but one is rich looking down at the poor or less fortunate. Literal climax is when he realizes that the Waynes are looking down on his mom and him. That triggers something in him.
Bong Joon Ho's class politics have always been clear across all his films. Parasite does a great job of pointing out class structure and by avoiding painting the poor people as noble and morally good and the rich as evil, moustache twirling villains the criticism stays leveled at the system. The class structure ends up producing that ending and those people, not some internal moral failings. Good film.
Yeah, while I really enjoyed the grift that was being pulled on the rich folks, at no point was I ever thinking they were anything more than just.... not entirely present? That's kind of the extent of their contribution to the conflicts of the movie, they don't think or care about anything outside their bubble, not in a mean way, but just in the same way I don't care about stuff that rolled under my couch. They are just kind of a group of harmless dinguses.

31:00 HOW THE OSCARS ACTUALLY WORK: A bunch of retired people from the industry (mostly actors), get free dvds in the mail and trade them like Pokemon. This isn't an exaggeration, and explains why films about older characters and holocaust documentaries always make the list...as well as why Best Cinematography always goes to "best natural vistas" and Best Editing goes to "most obvious editing". Even more amazing that Parasite won, honestly
They're not just retirees. It's active people, too. Everybody gets to vote for Best Picture. Only Screenwriters Guild members vote for Best Screenplay, only Cinematographers Guild members vote for Best Cinematography, etc. You have to be an active guild member to be in the Academy and get to vote.
@@7superdaimajin Sort of. Editors and cinematographers are the only ones who can nominate in their respective category, but any academy member can vote for the oscar, regardless of category. And proportionally, voting actors outnumber every other field. And my experience working with a producer trying to come out of retirement (and lunching with all his friends of the same age for a year) was very illuminating about just how large the retiree voting body is. Just sayin'
Parasite had an escalation of awfulness, which i hear is kind of a thing in korean cinema, where it started as a somewhat goofy comedy about a family of scammers " parasiting" on a richer but clueless family, ending into a tragedy with an hard hitting social commentary. The scene where the part of town in which the poor family lived gets flooded is one of the better metaphors i've seen in movies in years. It makes you think but it's also a great scene. Almost a perfect movie, imho. It has some issues, but it's the only movie i've seen in theatres in the last 10 years that made me think about it for weeks. The cinematography is great too, the actors are great, just a good movie all around. Is it the best movie ever made? No. Is it leagues better than most of the horrible movies that come out every year? Heck yeah
Ronin Dave not generally. It might be the case for blockbuster/popular movies because those are sociological events, but people aren’t always the mindless sheep that most reactionaries frame them to be. Sure, it’s easy to control masses, but individually, films like parasite and of lesser popularity weren’t made with the intention of creating drones. It got popular mostly due to its merits. I’d argue that Joker was intended as a strict change in the moral and philosophical landscape, although it is more likely a depiction of such. Besides, no one really takes the Oscars that seriously after a few days it passes. Anyone remembers Moonlight, a so-called woke film (a great one at that)? Any impact it had on the culture of America?
Art-ificial Blon-die Liberals and conservatives are both obsessed with controlling politics through culture, but it doesn’t work that way. A Marxist would tell you that Parasite is a pretty great film, and a product of the world we live in, and not much more than that.
@Emperor lol . It's less direct and people act normal????? Are you serious???? Do you even think sometimes for yourself ? Parasite is ridiculous pile of crap .
Parasite is a film that is elevated by going into it blind and having no idea what its about. Because of all the hype I'm worried people are going to be so informed and have seen so many clips that it might not hit as hard for some.
Yeah. American audiences will be turned off when they find out it's a scathing criticism of wealth inequality and capitalism that says only violence is the answer. We love the taste of boots here in the US.

Mike's making fun of the typical, ignorant general moviegoer that can't stand watching a movie with subtitles, a Director's Cut or an artsy movie, like Jay would do.

A great example of a intelligent person not really thinking it through before giving his conclusion. And it's not even nitpicking or pointing out exceptions.
I actually think the fact that The Shining sets feel smaller now works great. Because if you view it from the point of view of Danny, the last time he saw this place was when he was a child. So now that he’s grown up it would seem smaller. Not saying this is the intention, but it does work really well narratively.

During it, he turned to Flanagan and said "I know why you need (the scene), but that's a little much, isn't it?" Flanagan agreed, and cut it down from the longer version which was even more intense. I think the hotel sets look smaller on purpose. It gives it that sense of revisiting a place as an adult that you were at as a child. When we are children everything seems so big and vast, and once we are grown we are able to see them proportionally. I think that was a genius touch.
Or the studio just cheaped out on the budget.
Your avatar with Communion visitor portrait is mirrored.
It may be based on the actual Stanley Hotel here in beautiful Estes Park, CO. It inspired King's Overlook and is much cozier than

That was the sense I got as well! That it felt smaller to us because it felt smaller to Danny.

"THE JOKER: A MOVIE ABOUT THE RICH LOOKING DOWN ON THE POOR"
damn, I wish a movie like that had won the Oscars
The joker was not about that lmfao
@@justsomeguywithsunglasses8418not totally about that. There are many different themes and motifs in Joker but one is rich looking down at the poor or less fortunate. Literal climax is when he realizes that the Waynes are looking down on his mom and him. That triggers something in him.

I thought they just forgot to feed Culkin.
Wasn't he the one yelling about Parasite?
They are reusing the same title cards. I recall someone explaining this type of errors.
Didn't he make another movie with similar themes? It was on a train, had the dude who played Captain America, lot of people dying, bunch of crazy shit happens it was great. (I'm drawing a blank on the name, if anyone can help I'd appreciate it)

Even more amazing that Parasite won, honestly
it's almost like the old testament followers are becoming cultured.
He probably payed them.
it's probably like moonlight. now they can say "look! we're progressive now" and go back to play golf or whatever
Just sayin'
I like that they didn't make the poor family out to be always depressed. There was joy and laughter in their lives
Birds of Prey was _truly_ astonishing.
Also how they didnt make them just outright "victims" or "pure". They were assholes too
Parasite had an escalation of awfulness, which i hear is kind of a thing in korean cinema, where it started as a somewhat goofy comedy about a family of scammers " parasiting" on a richer but clueless family, ending into a tragedy with an hard hitting social commentary. Heck yeah

Parasite is proof you can "teach or preach" without overdoing. I think it's because the director understands the film he was trying to make.
hollywood and many of the movie going audience needs stories with clear messages that tell people how they should feel and think
Parasite feels like the type of film Danny Boyle could have made (with Scottish characters) in the 90s.
Art-ificial Blon-die
Liberals and conservatives are both obsessed with controlling politics through culture, but it doesn’t work that way.
A Marxist would tell you that Parasite is a pretty great film, and a product of the world we live in, and not much more than that.

Finally, the Parasite review. I hope it didnt hit too close to home considering how long theyve been leeching off of Rich Evans.
Oh my god why haven't I made this connection yet
I got to meet Mike at a bar about a week ago. Great guy! He broke a beer bottle over my skull in a drunken rage then threatened to murder my family.
Parasite is a film that is elevated by going into it blind and having no idea what its about. Because of all the hype I'm worried people are going to be so informed and have seen so many clips that it might not hit as hard for some.
When I reccomend it I basically only say that a poor family tricks a rich family to get hired by them, and that complications arise.
Yeah. American audiences will be turned off when they find out it's a scathing criticism of wealth inequality and capitalism that says only violence is the answer.

Interesting note about the scene in Doctor Sleep where the True Knot torture the kid: Mike Flanagan on the King Cast pod said that the version they filmed was actually even longer, and when they ran the movie by King, Stephen was basically silent apart from punching the air when he saw the kid's jersey was number 19 (one of many Dark Tower references), and the torture scene.
During it, he turned to Flanagan and said "I know why you need (the scene), but that's a little much, isn't it?" Flanagan agreed, and cut it down from the longer version which was even more intense.

It now strikes me as Oscar bait.
@@MegaMacReal Even if, I was enthralled
It was so meh
This show took 12 years to make!
I've heard this observation before, that the overlook hotel doesn't feel grand and large the way it does in The Shining. I actually appreciated this. In The Shining, Danny is a child. Everything would feel huge and expansive. When he returns as an adult, the hotel being scaled down reflects an adult perspective. He is a man now and the overlook is just a hotel. The ghosts are no longer tormenting a vulnerable child, but a powerful adult who has fully grasped his power. Whether these scaled down shots were intentional or not, I appreciated the affect. Besides we still got the epic reveal pulling up to the hotel with that iconic original shining score. I am satisfied.
They didn't, so I will...
.....so Mike, would recommend "Doctor Sleep?"
.... so Jay, would you recommend, "Parasite?"
Andrew Kosarko no and then yes
The best part about Dr Sleep is the fact that my local cinema showed the Shining as promotion for it
Not even mad about the Oscars, imagine getting so mad about a movie you clearly didn't even see...
To be fair he's not even pretending he saw it.
@@boheyo How is he supposed to watch it? They speak in subtitles!!!
Doctor Sleep proved that, yes, no one IS really gone.
And Parasite proved that not all modern movies are disasters.
well I mean, Parasite wasn't the only good movie this year
I agree! It was perhaps my favorite but many other fantastic films
Haunt Former agreed
My favorite movie last year was Playing With Fire, aka Rich Evans: The Early Years
DDCecil think I saw that at tums
Thats a deep RLM cut
You gotta be cool
The Wendy actress sounds EXACTLY like Duval, uncanny. Btw, it was Terminator: Dark Phoenix, to be exact
No it was Terminator: rise of the dork fighter day of salvatatioln of judgementation-genysis.
I love that Mike and Jay are talking more about stupid people being angry over Parasite winning Best Picture, rather than the movie itself. I love it!
The end of the "review" where they just lay into Joker, Phoenix and Hollywood in general was hilarious.
@@ListenToPumpkinMusic A typical Half in the Bag episode as always!
"I went in completely blind, which was the best way to see it."
Jay
They know how to treat a movie like this. Recommend it without giving anything away.
Why are people angry about it winning? I don't really follow any of that kind of stuff.
Though I am somewhat confused by how some random film I have never heard of had enough cash behind it to buy an oscar win (I mean we all know these kinds of awards are bought and sold).
Why are people angry about it winning? I don't really follow any of that kind of stuff.
I wish that skeleton would quit being so shy and just go in and discuss the movies with them.
Review The Lighthouse you hacks
Edit : 2019 Recap, thanks @Nick Carr
They did in their 2019 Re-cap.
Nick Carr Jay loved it
Waiting on the Uncut Gems review still
Doctor sleeps probably one of the better films I've seen in the last few years.... criminally underated
personally i hated it. felt like a bad movie wearing the skin of a good one.
"There are indeed injustices in the world, but hollywood celebrities feel none of them"
Print that one for the books!
I don't think Joaquin is a hypocrite though. He really is vegan. It's not the trivial brie Larson shit. He used his celebrity status for a good cause.
The hype around Parasite was authentic, which is really rare for a foreign film to accomplish
Now you need to watch Oldboy (the Korean one) if you haven't
Rare for then to get hype or for it to be authentic?
I do recall the organic hype around Amelie in the USA years ago, which was also a great movie. It is sadly rare...
Alternate title: Shinier. I'm here, Hollywood. Hire me.
Such originality why are you not in Hollywood?
What about "The Shining 2: Even Shinier"?
Little women 2: one size littler
"Shining 2: The Shinening"
The Shining 2: Shiny af, you gonna need sun glasses
Mike at 41:28 is savagely honest. The honesty from these guys is so refreshing and the reason I continue to watch.
41:15 too
