Thanks for being, Neil ✌️
Neil who? Armstrong? Neil Diamond??
Back then we criticized performers for product endorsements, now we have "influencers" that just do the endorsements with not talent.
That's true. Omg
Without talent.

MTV Video Music Award 1989: "Best Video of the Year".
In 1985 I worked at the then Garden State Arts Center in central New Jersey. Neil played with his International Harvesters band. My mom worked there as well doing backstage security.
Mike Love of The Beach Boys was there, my mom being a fan asked for an autograph. The only thing available was a venue program for the concert. My mom asked Neil for an autograph, he said that since Mike signed a Neil Young program he would only sign a Mike Love program. Several years later when Neil passed thru again my mom gave him a Beach Boys program to sign, which he did with a big smile
"Aint Singin' for Spotify" 😁
Oh never mind I'm back now 😂😂😂😂
Neil Young reminds me a lot of Joe Jackson, the fact that he can play anything he wants and he's not going to lose his identity. Plus, those two guys are two of the best songwriters around. They have almost nothing in common, and yet everything in common.
He almost lost it during his tenure on Geffen Records, in particular his two 1983 albums Trans and Everybody's Rockin', which were both cited as being "unrepresentative music." Although Geffen filed a $3.3 million suit against Young over these two albums, Young then shot back with a $21 million countersuit, insisting that he was promised free creative control; the two parties settled out of court in 1985 in favor of Young, who then released Old Ways. As released, Young described that country 'n western album in interviews as "Old Ways II" because he wanted to release the album in '83 as a country album, but that Geffen wanted it to sound more mainstream (hence Everybody's Rockin').
Young sold his music to BlackRock and shills for Big Pharma. He never had an identity to begin with.
This Notes for You, underrated album and tour.
Way underated song ! He capture that twangy garage sound from the 80's but with a soulful twist and bad ass horn accompaniment. Another example why the 80's we're just that awesome!
This song popped into my head today. Thanks Neil, keep it strong.
he's a putz.

I was in this Neil Young video in 1989. I have been a huge fan of Neil since Buffalo Springfield in the 60s and all of his solo work since, starting with After The Goldrush, so it was a thrill to work with him, he is such a gentleman. I have seen him in concert and he is an incredible guitarist......powerful and mind blowing! He has so much integrity and stands up for things that he believes in over money. I am the girl in the orange bikini as well as the girl on the swing. Fun, fun, fun!!!
Neil Young Born To Rock.
Very nice work. This is the only time in my life where I have wished that my face was a swing seat.
My 1st concert - I was 11, my brother Monte was 15, our friend Randy was 18 - He drove - Saturday November 29,1969 - We saw Santana open the show for CSN&Y at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix, Arizona - We paid $3.50 for the nosebleed seats but we walked down and were leaning against the stage
Row, you are a legend because you were part of this legendary video. MTV originally wouldn't show it, then it later won MTV's "Video of the Year"!
Bet you don't look like that now 😂😂
For all those bitching about the irony of having an ad before this vid you all realize NEIL YOUNG didn't put the ad up.
I remember when this came out on MTV. Loved it cause I was a fan of anything parody. Well, that and it's freaking Neil Young.
So you must be a member of the Weird Al fan club then....neato
@@Oh_I_Will Better be a fan of Weird Al too!
I'm not sure if I would classify this as parody as much as sarcasm and a shot at big business. Anything like that is definitely in the Neil Young vein.
I love how incredibly late 80s this is. It's so comfy.
This feels like something that would come on TV around midnight, when I'm lying on the couch half asleep with the lights off, while the rest of the family has already gone to bed. Super cozy.
@@exerciserelax8719 Ha yeah it does
The opening of the video, in particular, parodies a commercial Eric Clapton did for (I think it was) Michelob beer. Clapton had recorded a new version of "After Midnight" for his boxset that was coming out that year, and it was the soundtrack for the ad. This video parodies it perfectly.
To me, Neil will always have my respect for how he managed to piss off David Geffen.
Nowadays, today's singers don't see the reason why a singer like Neil, or a lot of musicians from the late-80's or early-90's, would refuse to be in a soft drink commercial. They'd most likely accept it with open arms with the attitude "who doesn't want to be # 1 in the fame game?"
This song became relevant again in 2022.
The sax intro is gut wrenching .. such a beautiful intro
Where can I find more music like it. Don’t say kenny g 😂
That IS a wonderful solo--for a long time, I wondered what song it came from. Then I heard "Bad News Comes to Town" on the "Bluenote Cafe" CD, and that exact solo really lifts that song!
This man is just so awesome ❤
R.I.P. Steve Lawrence, Rick "the Bassplayer" Rosas, and Ben Keith who contributed heavily to this album and tour.
Yes Rick the bass player as Joe Walsh always called him
Under the surface ,this song is deep and the video is the ultimate social satire
always loved this song for what it stood for. i know todays gen and their rappers would never understand this, but there was a time when if you sold out, you were scorned. today's world, you have rappers selling clothes, video games, and anything else you can think of. i old school....let your music stand on it's own merit.
That doesn't make any sense because Neil Young was pretty much alone in this in the 80s as all the biggest stars in the era were doing ads or had ad sponsored tours. Selling out hasn't been a thing since the 60s except in more niche genre circles like Punk, Grunge, Emo, Etc.
@@rickyhunt4075 Easy Mister eye of the tiger! He has a point. Neil was an
independent guy. Rob is not that far off the mark.
@@aburden8580 I agree about Neil but he's wrong about applying it to an entire generation whereas it was only a select few like Neil who believed so strongly in authenticity and letting their music stand on its own merits. People like Neil were always the exception there was no golden time where the majority of artists wouldn't sell out.

@@aburden8580 He has lived for years in the US and became an American Citizen a few years back don't see a contradiction there lots of people move to America and still love their homeland.
To my knowledge Neil hasn't done commercials or anything like that So I'm not saying he has ever sold out or anything just pointing out he was a rarity.
As for the Body positivity or Obese debate it's interesting because they're people who are obese yet are in Great shape and don't have many health issues look at sports I mean there's tons of obese guys who are great athletes NFL has plenty of Linemen, Boxing and MMA have had Champions that were fat and samd goes for Rugby and Obviously Sumo. That debate is a lot more complex than it seems.
The Jenner thing was ridiculous I mean if you're going to come out as Trans and push for more acceptance of the Trans community maybe you shouldn't back politicians who are hostile to them that was a dumb decision. There needs to be some sort of middle ground reached there.
People are full of contradictions it's a part of human nature life itself is a bit of a contradiction. There have been musicians that haven't sold out from every generation but they're always the exception not the rule. It's also far easier to refuse to take money for an endorsement or something if you already have plenty of money. Neil is from a time when people had to buy music which meant record labels and artists made a lot of money therefore labels often let the artists have more creative freedom and there was less incentive to do commericals, endorsements, etc. I remember a few years ago Neil said something like he didn't have a issue with people downloading music online and not paying for it and the band Cracker criticized him because he made all his money back then and didn't have to stuggle to pay the bills because of the huge losses of revenue for labels and artists because of piracy. It's easier to stand by your principles when you are rich and successful.
I love the 80s so much. Lived them from start to finish and never Get tired of my decade of youth. The Music and the movies.
Best video of the year for 1989

Neil Young is one of a kind, never sold out to further his career like so many other artists did and do. He did things his way only, doesn"t care if you like it or not. by the way MTV pulled the plug on this video only to give him Video of the year. LONG MAY YOU RUN NEIL

Neil Young is for sure someone who doesn't compromise when it comes to his music. That's what caused the lawsuit with Geffen Records. Neil was sued for making music unrepresentative of himself.
"...making music unrepresentative of himself." What the hell does that mean?
@@HansDelbruck53 Geffen wanted stuff like on the Harvest album, Neil was into different things then, and then actually went way out just to spite Geffen and did a rockabilly album, lol
That album was Everybody's Rockin'. I still have the CD version. One of the favorites in my Neil Young collection. My objection was to the phraseology - everything Neil Young did was "representative of himself", being somewhat the maverick that he was (and is).@@blindriv3r

Well said!
Michael Jackson hair on fire and somebody pulls off Whitney Houston's wig. Pure jealousy. A white man doing blues, a black form of expression but features the biggest black entertainers being scalped. Think about it. Both images had their hair ruined or removed. I remember this video from my childhood. Same old low key racism that went on in the 80s before we caught on to their game.
Mashano Malbrough I wonder why no one called it out?
@@mashanomalbrough62 Jealousy? You surely don't know Neil. He never wanted to be a big pop star. He sabotaged the record companies' attempts to make him a pop star every time. And why would he be jealous of two people who's music is strictly commercial pop pablum? How many Neil albums do you own man? Do you even grok what Neil has been standing for all of his life?
The last refuge of a scoundrel these days is to accuse a serious artistic or sociopolitical statement or artist as being "racist" when the statement has merit. Just because some of the biggest, highest profile, sell-out, crass commercialized acts at the point in time when Neil wrote the song were black doesn't make his statement racist. You probably think that Jackson and Houston should be exempt from criticism just because of their skin color. Well, that game of yours is getting old and won't cut it here man. The fact is that Jackson did a Pepsi commercial and Houston did a Coke commercial when they were already multi-millionaires. They were doing commercials for products that have been largely responsible for the explosion in diabetes, especially in the black community as well as products containing Donald Rumsfeld's artificial sweetener, aspartame. Neil (like many other common people were) was calling them out on it while other artists didn't have the balls to do it. Music/art and corporate capitalist commercialism don't mix.
I find that your making excuses for corporate popstar posers, just because of their skin color, and then attacking Neil, to be at the least, racialist.
That is a complete disservice to the real black musicians who are not sell-outs and are producing real art.
