I think it's awesome that you recognize therapists are multifaceted people too, and I would guess that the type of therapist you're looking for would still be authentic to themselves in therapy! Not all therapy clients see things in this way. This seems to be an area where a lot of young people are diverging more and more from the traditional viewpoint. The people in power making the rules pressure therapists to be "professional" at all times, whereas more therapists and clients are starting to recognize that you cannot divorce who you are personally from who you are therapeutically. We're kind of in a liminal space where there is still the expectation of professionalism 24/7 but more people are starting to question what "professionalism" really entails. I think it kind of comes down to 2 things: 1. finding the right fit between therapist and client where both parties can agree on what is considered "professional" (e.g., if a client doesn't mind their therapist wearing sweatpants in therapy, then there's no problem with a therapist doing so) 2. making sure the therapist is congruent with themselves, meaning it wouldn't be shocking for a client to see how they behave outside of therapy
I really like #2! Really great advice. Thats why I try to be authentic when dealing with clients so incase they do happen to run into me outside of the office it won’t be too awkward

As an undergrad student that just started my first year in Ba psychology, this video has been really helpful to determine whether this is the right fit for me. Fortunately enough I think this video reinstates the idea that this is definitely something I want to pursue. Thank you for these helpful and thought provoking questions, I think regardless of what field of study anyone takes it's always important to ask yourself why you chose that particular pathway. Again thank you and keep up the wonderful work!
I am currently a grad student in psychology, and I absolutely loved your nuanced view of the reasons to become a professional in psychology. I don't think it should be viewed as an inherently wrong thing to be drawn to the field by some sort of mental problem you experienced yourself, but having the ability to realize whether you are doing it just because of that is the more important thing to remember. Thank you for being such an amazing influence for future professionals in the field!
I think to me the hardest thing would be, not to get too emotionally involved in my cases... im too empathetic and i feel too much, even when discussing traumatic events in a long distance situation(not in person, virtually for example). I would add the psychological downsides of being a therapist, in another video 🤭 cause there sure must be
I have a lot to think about. I thought I wanted to go into this field but…public speaking a huge no for me and I like my freedom. To say when and where I go on a trip and the ability to just up and leave if I want. Thank you.

I'm currently just an undergrad psych student, so i dont know much about how the field works, but i was curious about how you got to the spot you are. You completed your doctorate, and youre currently doing postdoctoral work. But you already have your own private practice??? And thats without having your clinical psychologist licensure (i assume you have a counselor license or equivalent)? And on top of that youre doing postdoc stuff and managing a large social media business/presence. You also mentioned that you got a PsyD (i think) which to my knowledge, is the most expensive option compared to a masters or a PhD because its unlikely to give out grants. So somehow you managed to figure out the financiala for that. Im just so impressed with what youve done (and im jealous bc it seems so out of reach for myself)
I have a temporary license and a supervisor, which is enough in the state of WA to open your own practice :) And yes, running a UA-cam channel helped support me through grad school, as well as doing work as a TA.
Ana, could you recommend any books on covert narcissism? One of my biggest issues is that my narcissism leads me to always want moral superiority over others that I suppose is me being "fake nice" or "selfish". I've been unable to find anything that can help me understand this phenomena and I think the most logical reason why I am like this is just because I'm stupid.
Unfortunately I don't personally know of any self-help books on narcissism since there's a much more lucrative business around demonizing the illness, but I would really recommend therapy for this, especially psychodynamic and/or DBT. It's not that you're stupid, it's just very challenging to change patterns that have been deeply engrained since childhood! Based on your comment, it seems like you have the most important pieces, which are self-awareness and a desire to change.
Genuine question, how do you make a living during grad school if most of the work is unpaid? Do most psych grad srudents get scholarships? If someone doesnt get a scholarship, wouldnt that mean they have to get another job that pays enough to make a living, and cover tuition costs?
Most Grad students I know work other jobs. It's definitely a struggle but doable if you decide to take a longer path. I know people my age (Early to mid 20s) who work full time and take classes on the side.

Learn how to work through it. Rebuild your confidence and continue to practice your speaking skills. Practice public speaking in front of the mirror at home and use flashcards to help you remember what you need to say during your presentations.
You have to do the work. Work on yourself and your anxiety. Read self-help books & learn how to meditate. And also try to rebuild your confidence and your self-esteem. You can't be a good therapist to your clients if they see that you are always anxious when speaking with them.
