I think one thing to remember is that the cells have no real concept of the "outside". They vaguely understand that there is an outside world and that's where germs come from, but they know very little about what exists outside their personal roles. Of course they're worried about mass infection because that's what happens when there's a wound, and this is the largest wound they've ever seen. The scenes where the cells are confused but still doing their jobs, I think, is meant to point that out. That none of the cells have any understanding of the problem, they just know what they need to do.

In the next episode when they show the white blood cells still fighting to protect even as the body shuts down and the world ends around them I honestly got choked up. Even though it's just an abstraction of a bodily process it was still such a tragically noble image.
Patients and relatives/friends of the patient probably. Thing is with patients their shouting could be a side effect of the medication they're on causing them to behave out of character. Friends and relatives is a bit of a no brainer, they're in a place that has a highly charged emotional environment which can put people under a lot of stress. That said sometimes people are just entitled and bark orders.
Just FYI, the bacteria that the White Blood Cell was fighting at 4:30, while not specified in the anime, is specified in the manga. It is a Streptococcus mutans.

Nope, not just you. I went straight to the flu episode and re-watched to remember what amazing things our cells do and how we need to take care of them because they fight so hard for us. I especially think of Memory T cells and how they must be on overdrive right now. I also think that perhaps there really are more people that have it, but their immune system already took care of it with no problem because of the efforts all their cells had working together. So when officials say that its people with weakened immune systems are more at risk, it makes sense to me - and that's because of Cells at Work and Dr. Hope.
I love how the pacing was set by the drum beat which was the heart of the person in the 'process' of dying. I thought that was a pretty good way to symbolize time in the episode.
Man, this eppisode hit home with me because I had internal bleeding and almost went into shock, dockers were actually shocked (pun intended) that I didn't...they were actually prepping me for shock
@@Blackspidy619 Yep, internal bleeding is also bad. Our doctor here even described one case: Blood flowing into the cavity of the skull, putting pressure on the brain. It may not be as dangerous in other places, but it'll still result in complications. Even without those, blood loss itself becomes a serious problem just like our doctor explained through tennis.
Lol. I suppose technically you could interpret it that way. But I take it you've never had a candy apple? This is typically an apple coated in some kind of hard sugar candy which is usually red, and with a stick shoved into the bottom of it. When sold in bulk they tend to have plastic bags wrapped around them. In other words, a stand full of candy apples looks EXACTLY like what you see in that scene...

I was waiting for this review for so long! Hemorrhagic shock is such a good finale for a series where a red blood cell is the main character. Never know how important something is as when you lose it!
I don’t know why, this series always makes me so emotional. Maybe life outside of the body will be full of people who will let me down, but I know my cells will always be working their hardest.
I don't understand why some people ask for last episode reaction with such a demanding attitude. You know, there are ways to ask for things. Only a few comments says THANK YOU, and that's the real shame. Dr. Hope, I found your series yesterday, and I watched everything in one day LOL Although I want to see your reactions to the last episode and the OVA, I must say you really surprised me. I have seen other channels and I found reactions of two or three episodes, so I am impressed you have almost all chapters and you also reviewed the manga of Black version! I wanted to tell you I loved your videos, and the fact that you took time to draw your explanations. You are teacher material indeed. Also, when you explain these things, you look really excited, and that's cool because you can inspire other people to learn about medicine. I don't know if you will get to continue uploading videos for this series (kinda hard because of Covid nowadays), but I hope when/if you do it's because you feel confortable doing so. Thanks for a great video yet again! Can't wait for the conclusion to this one! Two translation notes: 1) the use of "shock" in "Sorry to shock you" is specific to the translation, as in Japanese she says (I believe) "Bikkuri sasete gomennasai" which doesn't relate in the same way to the Japanese medical term for shock which is just "shokku". 2) the same goes for the term" overpowering " as in Japanese he simply says "sugoi" meaning massive or impressive in this case.

Those two episodes are some of my favourite in recent years. I tear up every time I watch them because of how attached to the characters I've become and the new appreciation to our bodies they give.
Got to LOVE cliffhangers! Also the moment you said, "Of course, an ad break!" an ad totally started playing! Massively enjoying watching you watch this series. Really happy that this anime is actually teaching, but in a way that us simply people can understand a bit better, while also making it fun and interesting! The tension on this 2 part finale was really well done. Made me realize how much of a shitstorm losing a lot of blood is better than any film I've ever seen.
I have been looking forward to when you were going to react to the last two episodes, Dr. Hope. :) I love these last two Cells at Work episodes so much despite the fact that they make me very emotional because of what's happening. Those last heart pounds at the end of the episode makes the cliffhanger really brutal and I was glad that the entire season had aired otherwise the suspense might have killed me. However these episodes hit close to home in a way for me. I work at a small hospital so we don't normally get these types of major traumas. Still it's always nerve racking as a laboratory scientist whenever a doctor calls the Blood Bank phone requesting emergency release for O Neg units because a patient is bleeding badly or a Stage 1 Maternal Hemorrhage where we potentially have a mother in our OB wing at risk of bleeding out trying to give birth to her child. Also what you said about the "Quiet" word is absolutely true. XD It's just asking for trouble when everything is going right. Plus combining "Quiet" with a full moon can sometimes foreshadow either a weird night in the hospital lab I work in (aka we get specimens we don't normally see on a daily basis) or an extremely busy night in the ER and the tubes containing STAT specimens are dropping non-stop.

This episode and the one coming after it were what I had been waiting for since the start of this review series. Easily the two best episodes of the season. That last shot in this episode, with the usually crowded hallways completely deserted and the heart pounding in our ears...
An educational show that's also entertaining? Beautiful. A doctor who can help us understand the little things in said entertaining educational show? Brilliant.
Hearing Dr. Hope relate the daily struggles of anthropomorphized anime corpuscles to his own past experiences as a medical student is always entertaining.
So I just yesterday started watching this show (even watched it in my mother tongue which is rare for me, since my english vocabulary is just not sufficient for such specialized medical terms) and, despite how well this show explains things, I still didn't quite get the workings between the cells, so I found this channel and got into the habit of following up each episode with the corresponding reaction which helped A LOT and contributed very much to my enjoyment of the show. Long story short, I'm looking forward to you uploading the reaction to the next episode and reacting to season 2 as well, and I WILL be watching! :D
Man, this episode and your commentary hit home for me. The last person who screamed at me at work was because I couldn't get an IV on my hemorrhagic shock patient :/ (it was the patient's daughter who yelled at me) And as you said, it's near impossible to get any IV access on someone who is peripherally shut down. Thankfully, we managed to get the patient to ICU juuuuuust in time to be properly managed and resuscitated, and the patient lived. Whew!

I thought the blood pressure thing at 7:35 was in reference to how when the injury first happens the body senses a drop in blood pressure in the area (bc the blood is flowing out of the body), so it sends more there to compensate. This just ends up causing more loss of blood. In a minor wound it's good, as the blood will help flush the wound from the inside, pushing out bacteria or whatever, but in a major wound it can kill you. At least that was what I learned in 11th grade biology 😅

The shadowy fill on the red and white blood cell isn't always love. It can, as I think it foes in this case, signify a fond appreciation. Those are the main characters and have been through a lot, so highlighting them individually just shows that respect.
I got introduced to Cells at Work because of this series and I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it nearly as much without your commentary. Keep up the great work!
It wasn't so much that White Blood Cell was looking at her lovingly, it was more like he was proud of her; she's now able to guide a newbie around, and she's doing so much better. So he's happy to see her doing better.
It's not superstition if it's true. Seriously. Once, in college, I went to get breakfast at the student center only to find it locked for the weekend, realized I'd forgotten my key back into the dorm, and it was raining. The *instant* I asked myself if it could get worse, it rained *harder.*
Well, you don't lose anything by not tempting it. It doesn't restrict one's lifestyle like some other superstitions. I'd say tempting fate with no repercussions leaves less of an impression compared to those times Instant Karma™ activated. We tend to remember the stronger impressions for longer, so that may be a factor. In the end, I say there's nothing to gain by challenging "fate", because whether it exists or not, we can't win that fight.
I think Cells at Works takes an approach where, if the body hasn't experienced something before, it won't know about it much or at all. Hence the business looking people being more worried about infection than blood loss.
I'm SO glad you're back at this series! These episodes gut punched me on a narrative level, so I was mad interested in what you'd think of it on a medical level. Definitely looking forward to part 2!
Nice to have you back! As an aside, I'm curious the way you were describing, that the reaction to the injury would be priority to the wound rather than worrying about invasive entities. But in that case, are you looking at it from a Doctor's Perspective? Or how the 'BODY' itself would perceive things, especially from the 'short lived' timeframe that most of these things would actually live. But what I mean is almost everything up to now, they handled because the body has 'plans' in place for dealing with Certain Bacteria, Viruses, and minor injuries, it's the basic run of the day. However this is SEVERE Trauma, no real 'play book' of how the body 'usually' handles massive life threatening Trauma. Again we're seeing this over the course of the entire episode, but for the body from point of injury to where the episode ends would be what.... a few seconds? So your 'brain', 'immune system', or whatever that 'council' was supposed to represent is likely reacting to the 'injury' the same as it initially would to a minor wound, something it's seen time and again.... Until it realizes that this is DIFFERENT and the need to change tactics from 'prevention' to SURVIVAL.

@@Blackspidy619 Yep, internal bleeding is also bad. Our doctor here even described one case: Blood flowing into the cavity of the skull, putting pressure on the brain. It may not be as dangerous in other places, but it'll still result in complications. Even without those, blood loss itself becomes a serious problem just like our doctor explained through tennis.

This is typically an apple coated in some kind of hard sugar candy which is usually red, and with a stick shoved into the bottom of it.
When sold in bulk they tend to have plastic bags wrapped around them.
In other words, a stand full of candy apples looks EXACTLY like what you see in that scene...

I was waiting for this review for so long! Hemorrhagic shock is such a good finale for a series where a red blood cell is the main character. Never know how important something is as when you lose it!
I don’t know why, this series always makes me so emotional. Maybe life outside of the body will be full of people who will let me down, but I know my cells will always be working their hardest.

I have seen other channels and I found reactions of two or three episodes, so I am impressed you have almost all chapters and you also reviewed the manga of Black version!

Also, when you explain these things, you look really excited, and that's cool because you can inspire other people to learn about medicine. Two translation notes: 1) the use of "shock" in "Sorry to shock you" is specific to the translation, as in Japanese she says (I believe) "Bikkuri sasete gomennasai" which doesn't relate in the same way to the Japanese medical term for shock which is just "shokku". 2) the same goes for the term" overpowering " as in Japanese he simply says "sugoi" meaning massive or impressive in this case.

Those two episodes are some of my favourite in recent years. I tear up every time I watch them because of how attached to the characters I've become and the new appreciation to our bodies they give.

Really happy that this anime is actually teaching, but in a way that us simply people can understand a bit better, while also making it fun and interesting! The tension on this 2 part finale was really well done. Made me realize how much of a shitstorm losing a lot of blood is better than any film I've ever seen.

I have been looking forward to when you were going to react to the last two episodes, Dr. Hope. :) I love these last two Cells at Work episodes so much despite the fact that they make me very emotional because of what's happening. Those last heart pounds at the end of the episode makes the cliffhanger really brutal and I was glad that the entire season had aired otherwise the suspense might have killed me.
However these episodes hit close to home in a way for me. I work at a small hospital so we don't normally get these types of major traumas. Still it's always nerve racking as a laboratory scientist whenever a doctor calls the Blood Bank phone requesting emergency release for O Neg units because a patient is bleeding badly or a Stage 1 Maternal Hemorrhage where we potentially have a mother in our OB wing at risk of bleeding out trying to give birth to her child.
Also what you said about the "Quiet" word is absolutely true. XD It's just asking for trouble when everything is going right. Plus combining "Quiet" with a full moon can sometimes foreshadow either a weird night in the hospital lab I work in (aka we get specimens we don't normally see on a daily basis) or an extremely busy night in the ER and the tubes containing STAT specimens are dropping non-stop.
Dr. Hope, it's an anime. There needs to be SOME type of romance!

This episode and the one coming after it were what I had been waiting for since the start of this review series. Easily the two best episodes of the season. That last shot in this episode, with the usually crowded hallways completely deserted and the heart pounding in our ears...

So I just yesterday started watching this show (even watched it in my mother tongue which is rare for me, since my english vocabulary is just not sufficient for such specialized medical terms) and, despite how well this show explains things, I still didn't quite get the workings between the cells, so I found this channel and got into the habit of following up each episode with the corresponding reaction which helped A LOT and contributed very much to my enjoyment of the show.
Long story short, I'm looking forward to you uploading the reaction to the next episode and reacting to season 2 as well, and I WILL be watching! :D

Man, this episode and your commentary hit home for me. The last person who screamed at me at work was because I couldn't get an IV on my hemorrhagic shock patient :/ (it was the patient's daughter who yelled at me) And as you said, it's near impossible to get any IV access on someone who is peripherally shut down. Thankfully, we managed to get the patient to ICU juuuuuust in time to be properly managed and resuscitated, and the patient lived. Whew!

I thought the blood pressure thing at 7:35 was in reference to how when the injury first happens the body senses a drop in blood pressure in the area (bc the blood is flowing out of the body), so it sends more there to compensate. This just ends up causing more loss of blood. In a minor wound it's good, as the blood will help flush the wound from the inside, pushing out bacteria or whatever, but in a major wound it can kill you.
At least that was what I learned in 11th grade biology 😅

The shadowy fill on the red and white blood cell isn't always love. It can, as I think it foes in this case, signify a fond appreciation. Those are the main characters and have been through a lot, so highlighting them individually just shows that respect.

It wasn't so much that White Blood Cell was looking at her lovingly, it was more like he was proud of her; she's now able to guide a newbie around, and she's doing so much better. So he's happy to see her doing better.

Seriously. Once, in college, I went to get breakfast at the student center only to find it locked for the weekend, realized I'd forgotten my key back into the dorm, and it was raining. The *instant* I asked myself if it could get worse, it rained *harder.*
Well, you don't lose anything by not tempting it. It doesn't restrict one's lifestyle like some other superstitions.
I'd say tempting fate with no repercussions leaves less of an impression compared to those times Instant Karma™ activated.
We tend to remember the stronger impressions for longer, so that may be a factor.
In the end, I say there's nothing to gain by challenging "fate", because whether it exists or not, we can't win that fight.

I think Cells at Works takes an approach where, if the body hasn't experienced something before, it won't know about it much or at all. Hence the business looking people being more worried about infection than blood loss.

Nice to have you back! As an aside, I'm curious the way you were describing, that the reaction to the injury would be priority to the wound rather than worrying about invasive entities. But in that case, are you looking at it from a Doctor's Perspective? Or how the 'BODY' itself would perceive things, especially from the 'short lived' timeframe that most of these things would actually live. But what I mean is almost everything up to now, they handled because the body has 'plans' in place for dealing with Certain Bacteria, Viruses, and minor injuries, it's the basic run of the day. However this is SEVERE Trauma, no real 'play book' of how the body 'usually' handles massive life threatening Trauma.
Again we're seeing this over the course of the entire episode, but for the body from point of injury to where the episode ends would be what.... a few seconds? So your 'brain', 'immune system', or whatever that 'council' was supposed to represent is likely reacting to the 'injury' the same as it initially would to a minor wound, something it's seen time and again.... Until it realizes that this is DIFFERENT and the need to change tactics from 'prevention' to SURVIVAL.
