  • Next up on the medical drama review series is Code Black. Funny story about this show. For some reason, the UA-cam algorithm labeled your comments recommending Code Black as spam. So when I went into my comments review section I saw hundreds of comments pushing to make a code black reaction video.
    This is not as popular of a hospital drama show in ratings compared to monsters like House or Grey's anatomy but it still has a large fanbase and does well on CBS. After watching the show I was pleasantly surprised at not only how accurate code black is but also how much I enjoyed it. It really felt as if a doctor wrote the script and then it was fluffed up instead of the other way around. If you like this show please let me know in the comments so that I can watch and react to more episodes (suggestions welcome).
    Anyway, I hope you enjoy this episode of Real Doctor Watches Code Black / Real Doctor Reacts to Code Black. If you want me to continue making this medical drama review series please like the video and leave me a comment on which tv drama or show you'd like for me to review next. Love you all!

      Well TV shows are entertainment first, so a lot of shows aim for drama or comedy and put that at a higher priority than medical accuracy. Doctors (and other people with medical knowledge) aren't the majority of the audience, so it's hard for shows to impress people by their educational value over their entertainment value. And sometimes it just takes a while for a show to develop an audience. Still, I appreciate the effort to make it as reasonably accurate as possible.

      Wasn't there a ghost or angel at some point? Edit: Don't get me wrong, I liked the show, too. And I'm just reading now that there was a thing about how some of the staff of the hospital they based it on believing there were ghosts in the old building that weren't in a new building they moved to, and that they needed the ghosts. So maybe that's accurate, too. I'm not saying people can't and don't believe in ghosts/angels, I just thought it was weird that the show seemed to be depicting them actually being there.

      I remember watching this and it felt like it went off the rails after the first season. At least that was my thought at the time. I remember thinking it got increasingly fantastical and unbelievable.
      They had a child on a flying plane build a makeshift defibrillator because the mother was unresponsive for christs sake.
      There is only so much I can suspend my disbelief. Something changed over the course of the show and whatever it was, it lost its charme with it imho.

    What got me about Code Black was how much emphasis it put on platonic relationships between the staff. Like they love each other so much and are like family to each other, but there's no relationship drama. Also how well the patients' stories were integrated into each episode. They held weight and felt important. When medical dramas focus too much on the interpersonal (sexual) relationships between its doctors and hospital staff, I lose interest quickly because it feels like a cop out.
    Your show is set in a hospital, a place of life and death and despair and hope. There's your drama. That's all you need!

      I remember that they started some romantic stuff, like Angus having a crush and Savetti banging a surgical resident, but it was dropped pretty quickly, especially in the later seasons (Dr Ethan does have one later, but it was done quite well IMO).
      It was genuinely quite refreshing to have a no-nonsense medical show, since most of them are romantic dramas first, medical show second.

    • @BattleBladeWarrior

      Totally agree. Too many shows these days get lost in the surface level relationship drama, that they miss out on the more contextual drama (I.E, medical emergencies, patient issues, etc)
      I completely avoided missed out on this show because I had assumed it would be just like those. I had no idea it was so medically accurate, and actually focused on the doctors as a family for a change. That is really cool. Too bad it was cancelled, but I'm definitely interested in watching what's there.

    Hi Dr. Mike so I actually got the pleasure of meeting the writers/producers of this show and you were absolutely correct! These writers/producers WERE doctors in this specific hospital, and because their ER was so small and in such a high traffic part of LA, they had to call code black more often than normal. That explains why this show is so incredibly medically accurate and also why there seems to be little to no "fraternization" between the residents 😂.

    • @SpaghettiYOLOKingTTV
      @SpaghettiYOLOKingTTV Рік тому +3

      @Mortisha the shows do cost money to make. So if a show is just breaking even or not even breaking even, the business side is what determines its future. Things like what's costing the most money are looked at, are these things crucial to the quality of the show, can any of those things be cut, if not, what other things are potential reasons for the show not pulling in the ratings it needs to maintain quality while also justifying continuation, etc. Just because a show is exceptionally good doesn't always mean it will have success. There's a number of factors, especially when it comes to network television. Day and time slots are huge. Sometimes a great show will come along that can POSSIBLY do better on a different day in a specific time slot, but all the prime time slots on the network on all days feature shows that pull ratings that far outshine the ratings of the struggling show, therefore it becomes impossible to try and see if that show will do better. Sometimes they'll put the struggling show on hold and air it in the prime time slots when the big ratings shows are off season, which can be hard due to the long seasons some shows tend to have, which lead to smaller off seasons for those shows. It's a combination of things, not just money, although money is in every single one of those reasons. To think that networks aren't thinking of the quality of the show or aren't proud of having a high caliber show on their network is just incredibly pessimistic. Networks tend to have to be a bit more cutthroat due to their limited window of figuring out the best course of action to save the show and land it in an area where it will find its audience and as we know, sometimes that just doesn't happen. That's why you see many safe choices on network television with sitcoms and reality TV shows because those are cheaper to produce while yielding results that allow those shows to continue and draw in advertisers.
      I'm not saying that networks don't completely fumble a show's life, but there's definitely more going on behind the scenes, all of which lead to money or are influenced by it. But that's the influence behind ALL types of media. It's a business. And nobody continues a business that doesn't make money in the long run.

A few months after her passing, they sent her ashes back to us, along with a lovely letter listing all of the things various people were able to learn. This might actually surprise you, but medical people especially doctors don't usually insist in keeping their families alive when it's due. A CPR more than 30 mins is a sign. Some really old age we don't even allow them to even initiate. Sometimes the best end is a peaceful end. And we have seen a lot.

    The fact the act of “baby abduction” happens enough to elicit a specific name is slightly unsettling. I wonder how many baby’s have accidentally/purposely been switched at birth

    • @LaurenPaley95
      @LaurenPaley95 4 роки тому +163

      It actually doesn't happen that often . It has a code so that if it does happen they can lock down the hospital without spooking the abductor. It would (at least in most hospitals in the UK) be very difficult to abduct a baby

    • @sinandcyanide7505
      @sinandcyanide7505 4 роки тому +109

      Hospitals usually have ID bands on 2 of the baby's limbs immediately after birth, befor they can leave the delivery room, so they can match it to the bands on the parents to make sure everyone has the right baby. Some hospitals even have electronic trackers now that will automatically lick down a unit if the tracker is sensed in a place it shouldn't be or stops sending a signal where it should be. Even with these security measures, though, they need to have a code they can call so nobody in the hospital panics and so they can discreetly look for the baby without anyone knowing there's an emergency, including the person who took the baby. It's a rare occurrence but there has to be a plan in place in case it does happen. It's like how you would still wear your seat belt and have car insurance even if you've never been in an accident.

    • @XXemmz101XX

      JustGame I recently gave birth and before I did, the nurse went through all the precautions they have to avoid it. Such as the color of the name tags of the people working in the birthing unit (so another employee can’t pretend they work there and take the baby). They have the ankle bands to match with the parents. They also have a tracking device on the umbilical clamp that sounds an alarm if it goes near the exit doors or elevators. At least now they make it very difficult.

    I just want to say a huge and heartfelt thank you to those families who say yes to organ donation. My mother received a kidney transplant 26 years ago and she was lucky enough to have her own mum be a match. That transplant transformed my mum's life and I was born 2 years later because someone selflessly offered to donate a kidney to their own daughter. Whilst my mum was waiting for tests after first discovering she needed a transplant, she was on a ward with other people who were waiting for a new organ. She met many people who were in a desperate need for a fast transplant and new chance at life. Many died and many lived. Please do your part and, as long as it does not go against your religion, please become an organ donor and discuss it with your family

      The country I live in recently put in place an 'opt out' system, so unless you actively choose not to be an organ donor, for whatever reasons, then your organs are used for donation. Everything, including, eyes, skin etc. and I think its a really good idea. It means that many people who don't really care either way or don't bother with organ donation are still donors, so there isn't a shortage of donors, but everyone still has a choice and it is easy to opt out.

      Tøp Billion hi! it is true, the antidote to carbon monoxide poisoning is literally breathing 100% oxygen. You know how oxygen reaches your organs? It actually attaches to a part of your blood called the hemoglobin. However, oxygen wont be able to attach to your hemoglobin since carbon monoxide steals away the hemoglobin (like a love triangle where the other woman steals the hubby). Therefore there will be little to no oxygen that will reach your tissue organs. Sooo, in order to reverse that. You need a hella lot of oxygen!

It did have a bad habit of abandoning significant story-lines after only one episode even if they weren't properly wrapped up. I was very annoyed when they cancelled it in the middle of a significant character arc.

    I had a hemiplegic migraine which caused me to be unable to say the words i wanted. For example, "brother" instead of "mother." The aphasia came in waves, i had great difficulty speaking. Fish eye lense vision. It felt like i was drunk. The attending dr at the er pretty much ignored me. I hope it was because of an emergency, but for real, she saw me once. Never did anything. It was strange.

      I love their relationship too. I have relationships like this with people at my work. You don't understand unless you work in these type of stressful situations in the medical field. I work in a very busy office, we see around 200 patients in 8 hours some times more. It can get pretty crazy. I had a patient ask me today how I could handle seeing all these sick, terrible looking people every day because it was sad. My answer was you build a tolerance to it. It becomes normal.

    I think a big reason for the show's medical accuracy is because its writer and director is an EM physician, Dr. Ryan McGarry. The show was filmed in the old LA County ED where Dr. McGarry trained. He also directed a documentary by the same name, which talks about the LA County ED and the experiences of providers there.

    Hi Dr. Mike! Huge fan! I am so proud to see this. I am a trauma OR nurse and this show is based and filmed in my hospital! I wished I could have been an extra when they were filming here. It's too bad the show wasn't as popular. There were a lot of things that were out of date, but keep in mind these were based on the ER docs that worked there like 10-15 years ago. Anyways, fun watching this one video. And yes, hugs are the best! BTW, if I am not mistaken, it was written by two of our ER docs recounting all of their past experiences.

    Honest question: are there really hospitals with such dim lighting? Most of those scenes looked like they were working by candle light, with only 2 or 3 candles in the room. I've never seen a hospital so dimly lit.

    • @troodon1096
      @troodon1096 5 років тому +152

      I'm sure it was done for aesthetic and dramatic license reasons. Realistically it would be a lot more brightly lit.

    • @renthehag
      @renthehag 5 років тому +65

      It’s probably a combination of how they lit the scene and the color grading in how they edited the film. They definitely have full lights from above but I think they have accent lighting from different angles to cast shadows for dramatic effect.

      Most aren't realistic like this, super accuracy doesn't mean everyone is going to watch it. Personally I don't like cop/Doctor/etc shows because they are so stylized while trying to come off as authentic it feels stupid and hypocritical. Scrubs I liked cause while it felt believable it was also suppose to have a surrel feel to it

    I agree with the needing physical touch in this profession. People forget they're around their coworkers sometimes more then their own families, it is impossible that not build a relationship with them, so why is it normal and understandable for cops to have that relationship, and have each other's backs but it's strange for two people who may be more understanding of you then your own family could. Doesn't make sense to me.

    When my husband passed away the doctor who pronounced him (it was around 4am) hugged my mother in law and me and he was very emotional too. Some of the nurses even came to the funeral to pay their respects, he had been under their care for two months, and we became very close. My husband was very friendly and was great with making people feel special and cared for, so he was very popular in the ward.
    There's nothing inappropriate about this, they were incredible caretakers during his time in the hospital, and were super profesional all the time, and in that moment they also grieved with us. We are all humans, and they comforted us and we comforted them, coz we all needed it. Best team of nurses and doctors I could've ever asked for, my family will always be incredibly thankful for their love and care.

  • @calicat1996

    Totally agree about the hugging thing! I'm a nurse, can't say I've ever hugged a doctor, but I have hugged fellow nurses when shit hits the fan with their patients and they get overwhelmed, and I have definitely hugged my patients before or even more common held their hand, nearly every shift it feels like. Sometimes just discharging a patient or sometimes if their really upset or struggling with something. I work on surgical but also worked tons at a retirement home and bonded with one resident really well and she'd tell me she loved me every time I dropped off her HS meds put her medicated cream on and tucked her in to bed ahah and I'd say it back, she became like a grandmother figure to me. Sadly she passed but I still think about her all the time. And Heck I've had more old men and women kiss my hand than I have by anyone even remotely close to me age. Fellow female nurses will totally know what I mean! Hahah

      I dont hug, I just fix people.
      I leave emotional stuff to less talented docs and nurses.
      Fixed someone, next one please.
      Mike would say I am one of those who knows it all...nope...just know what is actually out there. For example guy comes with Vitiligo. It is supposed to be shit you cant cure. For majority you can actually fix it so it stays totally under control and as long you do what I tell you, you are OK. Usual books are for example terrible in that issue. It is embarrassing.

    I love how he said "oh of course I am going to hug her" i know some people may become closed off after experiencing trauma and being around it a lot one can also get a thick skin to protect themself and may remove themself as a result. It is amazing to know there are doctors out there that have not allowed themselves to be closed off in that way.
