Creating a character and a full rig in Maya was the most satisfying project that I ever did. A bi-pedal rig with finger controls as well as a full face control for eyes and mouth is an achievement. Very satisfying.
Yeah it is. I love rigging and animation. It's a great job to do in a production pipeline. Actually I started 3d using 3dsmax and Maya. And also did some shortfilms with Maya. :D
Bonus Tip: Dock the Selection Filter into your Layout and learn to love it, while animating. Set it to splines only, and you'll never select anything but a controller.
I tried following this to rig a hand mesh but it doesn't work. Some of the joints respect constraints, others totally freak out and wreck the default position as soon as I add the transformation constraint. And yes, I did the freeze all command about 500 times to make sure that wasn't the problem, doesn't help. This is why people hate rigging. There are a million ways to do it wrong and a million people telling you the "right way" to do it and all are saying completely different things. Waste of time, now I have to scrap and rebuild it with someone else's video. Thanks SoM, always underwhelming as usual.
Software does not do the work, the artist does....where it doesn't matter to me. Coming from 3ds Max and Maya, learning xsi, doing mostly C4D and even trying out blender and Houdini, I have deep respect for any Software package and it's developers. I try not to be a fan of any software. Be a fan of art in general and chose your soft where it makes sense to me. I can render in C4D, do muscles in Houdini or hair in Blender...but it would have to make sense to me. Hope this overcomplicated answer fits for you. :D
This was incredibly helpful. Has always been intimidated by rigs and breaking it down step by step like this made it much more approachable. Thank you!

REALLY N1!
I really wish SoM has some more in-depth series about Rigging & Character Animation inside C4D. Too hard to find resources on this topic.

Serious Pro tip!
PRO TIP!
Very informative,Thanks.
Amazing! Thank you!
Thank you for this nice lesson. I'm still learning. Just one simple question: Why when I open the Bee, its totally in black? Thanks
Nice one! What about the eyelids? Can you quickly describe the process?
The eyelids are in the project files. Just hidden. It's basically two hemispheres.
More like that plz
omg i was waiting so much for this tutorial! thanks a bunch!
Hope you enjoy it!

When will you switch to Blender?
