Thanks to watching this, I successfully used this same approach (using bones to drive a deformer instead of directly driving geo) in Houdini. Thanks for your clear and concise explanation!
Oooohhh what!!!! I saw this drop a few days ago then disappeared?! So glad its back as this is just what i need post base camp!!!!! EJ is the man sweet. Mr Toas5 is far from simple- he has a complex personality of cheerfulness😂
i had an issue with the footage, like Will said, the edits were overlapping and it was a mess so reuploaded and added a couple more tips at the end to make it mo'betta! :)
Bob Ross of weight painting! LOLLOLOL! I love Bob Ross. After watching him, he will make you think you can do the same thing he's doing. But, it never worked for me. Great tutorial dude. I will probably watch this 2-3 times to let it sink in. I am so glad you showed me a traditional way to rig a character. I'm a little confused with skin tag and what it is used for.
oh yeah! BIG difference between watching and doing! we psychologically are more confident by watching videos but then when we actually do the thing our confidence crashes back to earth when you realize how hard it really is! haha so the skin tag is the deformer that allows the joints to act upon the FFD. think of it as a link between the joints and FFD. Hope that helps!
hi, this is awesome. can you make more animation and rigging tutorials? (for example: game chest modelling, and rigging and modelling animals, birds, etc.. because they are going from real world. and truck and wheel loader rigging, animation when vehicle is start, etc..)
@@eyedesyn Hey EJ, having the same problem here, don't see any option for nulls as joints in bind command. I've only got 2 options for selected points and allow null length
yes, I know it. but I do not know how to make sure that the black dots of the eyes do not go beyond the limits of the eyeballs, and it was precisely the movement of the black dots over the area of the eyeball that took place.
Nice Tutorial, as always! But redoing the rig, I was facing one problem: unfortunately the joints only work on the FFD when moving or rotating them. The nice bulging effect when scaling the controller/joints somehow doesn't work. Any ideas, what the issue could be (transform P,R and S in the consraint-tag are all checked)?
Hey EJ, great tutorial as always! Sorry to bother you, I was looking for one in particular where you did a pose morph spline lip sync setup and I can't seem to find it anywhere! Thanks!
Man I looked up how much this software cost and it made me want to cry 😭 it reminded me how expensive photoshop use to cost when I was a kid except it’s waaaaaaay more expensive. you would have to be Bill Gates rich to afford it!
It's $59/month now! and you dont have to be Bill Gates rich to afford this, everyone in the industry making money off of 3D can easily afford this tool. if money is an issue, Blender is free!
@@eyedesyn I also googled it and found nothing. That somehow makes the coincidence of both works appearing so often in each other's context even more hilarious.
You and Tim Clapham never oversimplify, but instead take the time to explain clearly. That's invaluable. Always look forward to your tuts. Thanks, EJ.
really appreciaet that! honored to be mentioned alongside Tim! thanks for watching!
Bought Rubber Hose today, excited to try it out and glad to support your work!
thank you so very much for your support! really means alot!!
EJ is the true MVP. This tutorial is amazing.
thanks for watching!

THIS WAS AMAZING!! I have never rigged in my life and you made this so easy! Learned so much and adapted and made my own lip rig. Thank you!
Nice, simple rig, EJ! Thanks for breaking it down!
Thanks for watching!
You never fail to have just practical, usable ideas and info! Fantastic again!!
appreciate that man! thanks for watching!
Thanks EJ, needed this for an idea I wanted to make
Awesome, happy to help!!!
Oh my god I never thought that one day i can rig a deformer ! totally shocked
GREAT! Thank you so much, this will push my workflow forwards!
glad to hear it! enjoy!
Thank you so much for the tutorial!!!! I was on the edge of a cliff and you saved me.
That toast must be stoned with all those joints. Nice one EJ
heyooooo!!!
EJ is amazing.
appreciate it!
ooooooo this is such a creative way to rig hell yeah
happy to open your eyes to this possibility! :)
Dude: your tuts are the best. You're great at explaining stuff. Hugely appreciated!
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching!

The original version had some visual ghosting going on (like two layered videos) for about 5 minutes which made keeping up a bit tricky.
i had an issue with the footage, like Will said, the edits were overlapping and it was a mess so reuploaded and added a couple more tips at the end to make it mo'betta! :)
Yep, rookie mistake! haha
such a cool workflow
Thanks!
Thank you for the excellent tutorials! You are awesome!

Thanks for tutorials ! It's very helpful and easy for understand ! Hello from Eastern Europe )))
thanks very much for the kind comment, glad you enjoyed it! :)
anyone else not able to bind the ffd and joints in r21?
same here. have you sorted it out somehow?
On 2024 and still the same problem.
Elegant technique
, i will use it! Thanks a lot EJ!)
happy to hear it! enjoy! :)
FFD square grid with control points with which you can change the shape of the object :))
exactly! :)
One word: A M A Z I N G T U T O R I A L ! ! ! (that was two, but still A M A Z I N G)
Thanks EJ, Excellent tutorial. another eyeopener by eyedesyn
nice pun! thanks for watching!
You're the best, thank you for these amazing tuts.
You're very welcome!
That's what I wanted!
Thank you.
definitely to give a test to this! thanks a lot EJ youre the best! :)

hi EJ, how to add Jiggle deform to this FFD rig? its seem doesnt work on me?
woooo good job eyedesyn
woop woop! thanks for watching!
Great tutorial as always!
thanks for watching!
You are a genius
thanks for watching!
very very cool tutorial!
thank you very much)
Hey EJ. Are you able to add a jiggle deformer to this setup? Can't figure it out.
You can if you put everything in a connect object and apply the jiggle to the connect - at least that’s my theory 😂
Wish I could try this. It keeps making the object I have shrink once grouped together.
I really love this tutorial. I am wondering how can you take that project and export the animation into an FBX file?
Since it’s not joints and weights like a traditional rig - unfortunately no! 😔
Really nice
thanks very much!
what if i want to rig sculpture part without separated objects, and if i have separated it it would be fake
Do you know what happened to add PSR constraint tag in r25? I cant find it anywhere
Thank you again!!
thanks YOU again!
Cool video...but I can't find psr constraint anymore in R25. Do you know how it is working with R25?
It's under the Constraint Tag! When in doubt use the Commander (SHIFT+C). In R25 the Constraint Tag is under the Rigging Tag and has a new icon

This is so cool ! congrats ! Juste one question, could you animate fingers with this tool ? thx so much
best to animate fingers the tradional methods!
thanks, you are the best!
. This is so usefull.
thank you for watching!
why you dont share also the lighitng part tutorial?
Do you think it would be possible to add mixamo mocap data to an FFD rig like this one?
you can apply ffd on top of a mixamo rig yes, i would also use the mixamo control rig to get more control over your mixamo rigs
Hey EJ! Thanks for making these awesome tutorials! I am intereseted in buying the Bendy Lim Rig plugin. Can I rig fingers with this plugin?
cant use this to rig fingers no, but we are going to add a prerigged hand to the product as an update!
Hi EJ, in Cinema 4D R21, when i set Character --> Bind, it doesn't work. Is there any different approach in Cinema 4D R21?
should work the same ,just need to ensure that nulls as joints is checked on in the bind command
@@eyedesyn Hey EJ, having the same problem here, don't see any option for nulls as joints in bind command. I've only got 2 options for selected points and allow null length
Please make a video of how to make his eyes watch null. You are the best and thank you very much for this extremely useful lesson! )
you can use a target tag for that :)
yes, I know it. but I do not know how to make sure that the black dots of the eyes do not go beyond the limits of the eyeballs, and it was precisely the movement of the black dots over the area of the eyeball that took place.

Wicked good

The bind seems to work only in 2 joints of my joint chain, not sure why. Using C4D 2024.1
Had the same problem, but as he explains at around 10:02 you can paint the joint point influence yourself
Can you show us how did you render it in octane render?
if you check out the project files link, that will have the project files and textures used if you're interested!

@eyedesyn EJ! I totally didn’t see your comment until yesterday and I have no idea why! But thank you! Haha
sooooooooo good
WOW!
hope you enjoy!
I don`t have the toast group, what I do?
Excelente, muito grato!
thanks very much for watching!
Is this the best practice to rig characters/objects in cinema 4d for use in Unreal Engine?
I dont think so as I believe rigs must be done using joints and only joint based deformations can be used in Unreal
do you guys know any Cinema 4D Rigging Plugins & Scripts that can help?
Wow
Loveit!
thanks for watching!
and can I rig and animate this character if its less than 50 polygons?
gibe it a go!

Look at all these points and joints

can you do this in Lite version of C4D?
sorry no! :(
I am sure this is easier but damn its still complicated. lol
bind not working in c4dr21
