  • In this video I show examples of the US small arms of WWII used in the film "Saving Private Ryan". This will also serve as a summery of the firearms used by the Unites States in WWII. In this video I discuss the 1911A1, M1 Carbine, M1A1 Carbine, M1 Garand, 1903A4, M1A1 Thompson, 1918A2 BAR and 1919A4. Enjoy!

True story: My brother and I were out on my grandpa's private range with a recently acquired AR15, practicing hammer pairs and failure drills. My grandpa walks out with his M1 Garand and watches us for a while. When we note the quizzical expression on his face, he asks what we are doing. We explain the purpose of the failure drill and my grandpa shakes his head disapprovingly, expertly slaps an en bloc clip in his M1, takes two steps forward so he is on the line, mounts the rifle, and places a perfect center hit on the cardboard silhouette target, then looks back at us and says "if you shoot a China-man in the chest with a .30-06, you only have to shoot them once." He served in Korea and held the Garand in pretty high esteem. But he spoke even more fondly of the BAR. He said whenever he went out on patrol, he would trade his Garand in for his buddy's BAR, because the increased firepower was always welcome outside the wire. He didn't talk about the combat he saw very often, but he did recall a night time ambush a few times in which he made it very clear that without the BAR, he wouldn't be alive, and neither would we. We had fine weapons in WWII and Korea, but the reason we won was the quality of our troops. The men who fought those wars were truly exemplary, tough, tenacious men who wanted to do the right thing. They were our greatest generation. My grandpa left a piece of his soul on a mountain in Korea. He died of Alzheimer's a few years ago, but I inherited his Garand and cherish it as a piece of my family's history, and of my country's.

Back in 1984 or 1985, I went into a Woolworth's Store (they've been out of business for along time). And they had barrels of M-1 Carbines. They only cost $89-$109 each. And these rifles were surplus WWII. I purchased 4 of them that day and an AR7. I still have them to this day. I just graduated college and had the summer off, until I started medical school. Two of the M1's I got were either never used or fired less than 100 rounds. The other two I wanted for character so the stock had some digs and nicks in them. As well as, slight blue wearing. However, they were still in really good condition. Man those where the days for purchasing firearms. There was no background check. Just 4473 form, to show transfer of the rifles. Woolworth's didnt have any M1 Garand's. Just a boat load of M1's. The m1 carbine, FN-FNC and FAMAS are my top 3 favorites in my collection. When I bought the FAMAS, I wasn't really dig it per se (at that time). Tens years later, I discover very few were important. Now it's worth roughly $30K. Glad I never sold or traded it. I think I paid like $750 for the FAMAS....that was a lot of coin back in circa 1980's.

My father was a WW2 vet. He served in the 109th. Inf. Reg't., 28th Inf. Divi. as a squad leader in a 60mm mortar crew. My two brothers and I took my dad to the movies see the film. As you would guess he was a critical of some of that movie. He wants told us that he started out carrying a carbine. But shortly he switched to the Thompson. For a laugh he told us that he couldn't find a trailer to carry his ammo. So he switched to the Garand. But, he found it too heavy to carry since he was a small guy of only about 5'7". He was wounded in his right forearm buy an 88 while riding a Sherman. The blast through him and his crew off the tank. Killing his best friend. My uncle who also was in the 28th was a radio man in a different company? He was wounded in his left arm. My father took his carbine and left the. Garand. He went on to serve 20 years in the army and another twenty years in the Cybil Service. He passed away and 2016.

Revolutionary special effects in the way it depicted combat.
However, lots of technical problems with the story: Having a medic help assault a machine gun? Having a third person run back-and-forth for ammo (that's why the third person on a machine gun team was designated Ammo Bearer), etc? I can't believe any military advisors to the film let that stuff happen.

Yes, in particular the German 81mm mortar which could blow up only 2 meters from a Brad Pitt and yet he was able to outrun and dodge the splinters by running really fast.

International Harvester also made the M1 Garand. Also, on the M1 Carbine, you didn't mention that the early ones used a push button safety and later went to a flip safety because some troops would mistake it for the magazine release.

I was told that the BAR having a fast fire mode was for up close engagements. It gave the gunner the ability to lay down a fast suppression of fire for a shoot and scoot style of operation. Then when they engaged at range or wanted a more accurate fire they would switch to the slow fire mode.

As always a great video.with good looking samples of machine guns and regular firearms I would love to have. Please keep doing these types of videos along with the weekly gun review. I like I’m sure most people who like firearms just enjoy seeing and learning about firearms even if we can not own them ourselves.

Greatest gun sin of the entire movie (although my favorite war movie) is private Jackson taking 7 shots from his 1903 in the bell tower without reloading. Bugs me every time I watch it, since the first time I noticed it.

I was still using the 1911 .45 cal in 1971. It had real stopping power. Both the M1 and BAR fired .306 rounds. All three of those weapons had dramatic stopping power. When you got shot by one of those weapons you weren't getting up.

I’m not really a gun guy but growing up in Pennsylvania they were pretty ubiquitous. Years ago a friend had a M1 garande and they are damn good rifles. Some states guys use them for deer but in PA you can’t use anything semi-auto.

1911A1 was issued to officers and NCOs for discipline in the ranks. They were issued to troops who were in crew served weapons. MG crews, mortor crews, artillery. All airborne troops were authorized to have one. Armored crews and air crews as well.

There were actually 4 manufactures of the M1 Garand. Springfield and Winchester were the most common but Harrington&Richardson (H & R) as well as International Harvester (IHC) also produced the rifles.

Correct on two manufacturers in WW2, wrong on the 4 if you want to get nit-picky! Think: Beretta. they made M1 Garands for Europe.
