  • This video is a table top review and comparison of the Russian SVT40 and the American M1 Garand. We start by looking at the history of both rifles... It is interesting to note that both rifles share somewhat of a similar design path. Also, we will go through a point-by-point comparison of the two. Each has their own gas operating system, which we explore in detail. Thanks for watching!

As someone who owns both the svt is no where near as reliable as the M1 I’ve never had a malfunction out of my Garand but I get a malfunction with the SVT40 every magazine still a fun rifle but the rimmed cases cause problems and it’s just as fast to reload the Garand with enbloc clips as the SVT40 with mags with practice and most people issued SVT40’s were using stripper clips not spare magazines

The M-1 was originally designed for the .276 Pedersen round which was ballistically similar (slightly less powerful but in the same ballpark) to the modern 7mm-08 cartridge. Consequently, the original M-1 was a little lighter and sleeker and held 10 rounds rather than 8. Kind of at the last minute, the Army decided to go with the .30-06 round because it would allow the rifle and the Browning machine gun to use the same round and because the Army still had millions of rounds of .30-06 from WW1. The thicker chamber area of the larger cartridge necessitated putting a bend in the operating rod which made it susceptible to breakage. They mostly overcame this with a couple of small tricks but to this day, the operating rod is just about the only part on the M-1 that ever breaks.

@@johndaugherty4127 It's still a hell of a rifle. You can get parts to rebarrel one in 7mm-08 but because its parent case is .308 you don't gain any capacity and of course, the rifle is still the same size. Nevertheless, I may do it someday. I already built one in .308 and it's really sweet.

So, really, the Garand, as we know it should be called the M2 Garand, with the M1 Garand name going out of use when all further production changed to the gas port->cylinder->long-stroke piston arrangement, and all original gas-trap models being retrofitted to the same system. Effectively, it is a completely revised rifle, and should be a new model designation.
