    It's a strange world we live in when you can get a brand new AR-15 for cheaper than a SKS. I need to get another SKS before I can't get one anymore. Fun rifle.

    • @Shane-Singleton
      @Shane-Singleton 5 років тому +29

      @@katana258 I think that's some pretty dumb shit you just rattled off. Something doesn't have to be well made to be desirable. Value can be put on aesthetics, historical significance, Its rarity or lack of attainability, etc. I think the SKS is cool. I think my 57 BelAir 4 door is cool although a lot of people don't like 4 doors. I've got newer and better rifles and I have newer and better vehicles but I want the old stuff just because I want it. That's ultimately the only real reason that lots of people buy most things. And value is based on what people are willing to pay to have one. There likely won't be any more SKS's imported. AR's are still rolling off of the assembly lines at a furious pace. Supply versus demand = market price.

      Depends on where you live and AR-15 in CT is going to cost you 600+. It sucks but as soon as they were legal to purchase again I didn't hesitate even though prices dropped about a month later. I didn't buy an AR-15 pre-ban and I always regretted it. But of course now I regret selling my Yugo Mauser even if it wasn't a shining example of the rifle.

    • @Shane-Singleton

      @@Osprey1994 True I forgot about all of the ban states. I picked up an AR-15 last year. I'd had a crappy Olympic one about 10 years ago but traded it for an M1 Garand (best trade I ever made). I bought a DPMS AR last year because they've gotten so cheap there was no excuse not to have one. Thankfully i've been able to find both a Yugo and Chinese SKS's since I made my earlier comment.

      $69.99 for mint M-44 fresh from the crate with cosmoline still filling the barrel, $49.99 per 440 spam can of 54R - shipped, $69.99/1000 rounds of 7.62x39 shipped to my door. Back in the late 90's, shooting this stuff was cheap and fun! Granted, you really don't want to shoot much more than a couple dozen rounds through an M44 in a day... fun, huge fireballs, loud enough to wake the dead and brutal recoil.

    • @ghostuscoyote

      I had to get mine for $350. Great price for today since it was in practically new condition. I have been to gun shows and seen ratty ones for $400. That's just the collector's market these days, there is no "surplus" market anymore.

    • @thegearhead
      @thegearhead 5 років тому +2

      @@ghostuscoyote while much more than they originally were when imported, I think they're now getting to a realistic $ value for the quality and durability they represent. Originally, when they came in, they were an insane bargain. I'm thinking that they're going nowhere but up from here on out... not easy to handle mentally, but we were spoiled by the cheap prices when they originally got here. Sadly, those days are now gone for good.

    Enfields are super easy to reload as you NEVER want to full-length resize the brass (just neck size and occasionally bump the shoulder back and go), so I'm never hamstrung on ammo price.
    K31 is easy to reload for too (.308 bullets).
    M48 Mauser is just as good as the K98's while being a fraction of the price and rarely as well-used
    Got 2 SKS's (Norinco Paratrooper and Yugo 59/66) and glad I got them when they were cheap. The Norinco is my handy little brush gun (threw a red dot on it and it's a SWEET little package) whereas the Yugo had never been fired except for at the factory as far as I could tell. LOVE that cheap ammo!
    AND got my Mosin for $79 a few years ago and glad for it, because now places are asking STUPID prices for them. Yes the cheap surplus ammo is pretty much gone, but it uses the same .311 bullets as my Enfield so that certainly simplifies reloading.
    Surplus rifles: more predictable than the stock market-they always go up!

    Love them Brit. Enfields! The example SMLE shown is interesting. It appears to be a WWII Indian Ishapore rebuilt because of the late late WWII forearm-you can barely detect the reinforcing screw. A couple of features jumped out at me as I am an Enfield collector. The fore sling band appears to be brass. Australia is the only country that produced the brass forearm band and the holes in the front sight protector. Milling out the holes in the front sight protector allows for moving the front blade without having to remove the entire front end piece of the gun. I wish our narrator had pointed out when and where this example was made. The gun could be an Aussie Lithgow or a British made example. As with US rebuilds, the armorers cared little (zip) for matching up exact makes of parts. Note: the sling is mounted incorrectly. The brass stubs should be on the outside. I would add that if your interest is historical, ignore the post WWII .308 caliber Indian rifles. The mystique of the Enfield comes from its connection with two World Wars. If however, you care squat about the history and want a shooter that costs less to feed then buy the .308 version - groan.
    K31 Swiss rifles are slick as in S-M-O-O-T-H! and they are all, like Swedish Mausers, in such good condition because they were not in a war. Hitler considered invading Switzerland but thought better of it because the Swiss were well armed and a neutral Switzerland provided the Nazis with a convenient place to liquidate their stolen loot.
    As for the M48 Yugo Mauser, I was surprised to find that the firing pin of a K98 would not fit a M48. The M48 is built on the shorter Mauser action! You know what Gomer Pyle used to say? Makes me wonder why the Wehrmacht did not go with the shorter action. Note: the handguard fully covers the barrel like that of a Czech VZ-24. Here again there is no real war history unless you are into the sad wars of the Yugo disintegration of more recent times.
    When old killer war guns were allowed to be imported again, decades after the 1968 ban, I felt like I had a second chance in life. I jumped right in. I built my Enfield collection from those that came from Century Arms; Enfield from $20, Nagants from $20, SKSs $80, etc. "Ah, the old days are gone forever, when whiskey was 50 cents a gallon." - Sgt. Quicannon from SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON.

    I would say the K31 will be the first of these to hit the $1000 price tag years down the road. They still come in from time to time, Classic just had a few the last couple days. Once they completely stop coming in and more people realize the insane quality and accuracy in the rifles, they will climb quicker. The SKS will also get up there pretty quick since it's a semi auto, and people will realize that it will be a semi auto that can be loaded fairly quickly and usually is excused from "assault weapon" type bans.
    I wish I had gotten into C&R collecting earlier, but I am thankful that I did start in 2012 when there were still a lot of good deals to be had. $89.00 Steyr M95 carbines and Mosins for example...
    The prices going up and primary market drying out does suck, but I am glad so many people are interested in these guns. It will ensure that they survive and are taken care of, and it brings more people to the community to stand up for gun rights.
    Thanks for the vid!

    Hmmmm We (Dad, my brother, and myself) bought 2 cases of Enfields (24) back in 1962 for $120.00. Most of them were really good condition and some were truly excellent. All were built in the US by Savage. They are all gone now and my rifles are different. I have a "Husky" Mauser 6.5x55 SE and an old Marlin 336 30-30. My other rifles are AR15s. One will soon become a 300 HAM'R and the other is a 22 lr. The 300 HAM'R is currently a .223 Wylde so that upper will remain intact and the HAM'R upper will be new. Both center fire uppers are gas piston driven. I don't shoot calibers that have stiff recoil any longer. I highly recommend the Swedish Gustav 1896 6.5x55 SE Mauser if you can't find a Husqvarna. You can hunt almost anything with the 6.5mm Swedish Mauser. Excellent ballistic coefficient and sectional density. I will eventually only have my ARs. The 22lr and the 300 HAM'R. I will keep the .223 Wylde upper just in case the SHTF and need to find ammo. In the mean time I will stock up on 300 HAM'R brass, lots of primers, powders, and bullets.

    The crazy deals are gone but you can still find good deals if you are patient and willing to do the searching. Hit the gun shows. Get to every one you can. This year (2018) I got a 1932 Tula Hex Mosin for $150 and a Carcano for $125. A guy was wanting to thin out his collection. Take a look at South American Mausers. They were made in Germany or Czechoslovakia. They're good rifles and I got two at just $300 each. You will not find a killer deal at every show but go to enough of them and you will. The advantage of gun shows vs online is that you can look at it and see what you are getting. Also, going to gun shows is just pure fun.

    If you go for a Nagant, look at the barrel mark at the top in front of the action and look into it to find out EXACTLY what you're looking at. Someone over the last 90 years butchered a very rare Finnish M-28 ski-trooper model [with the original stock] that would have otherwise been worth thousands if not 10s of thousands of dollars. In the case of the M-18s, the serial numbers are on the left side and are sequential. The ski-trooper models took up the first 6,000 of the first 10,000 rifles, after the first 6k, they stopped using the ski-trooper stock and as they got damaged or refurbished, would no longer have the second sling mount in the rear of the stock which makes the ones that still have the original stock very rare and valuable finds.

My personal favorite is the Yugo (w/grenade launcher) Thow, do keep your eyes out for some that have a chrome lined barrel (some chineese models) A sks can be fired, disrespected allday everyday, & still function time after time! GREAT RIFLE WHICH COULD BE HAD FOR WELL UNDER $99.00 TWELVE YEARS AGO!

    I purchased a select K-31 Swiss a couple years ago, along with a case of ammo . . . took it to the range and couldn't believe the accuracy. I took three shots at 100 yards with open sights and you could cover all three with a quarter. The neat thing is there is an adapter for a scope that you don't have to modify the rifle to mount. But why bother? The only other rifle that compares to the K-31 is the Swedish Mauser M-98 . . . the Swiss know how to build rifles. You cannot go wrong. And hunting ammo is inexpensive and very much available.

    I'm with you with most of your picks. However, in terms of affordability, it seems like the Type 38 or Type 99 Arisaka should have made the list. I've bought around 6 Type 38's for less than $200 each and a couple 99's for less than $200 as well over the last 3-5 years. They shoot very nicely, you just have to reload for them. Also, one can get sporterized Enflields for less than $200 and either have fun with that or restore them. Word of warning; lots of Enfields are out of spec in terms of head-spacing. That usually isn't a dangerous thing as much as it means your brass gets abused and you'll get more case ruptures, meaning you might only get one or two reloads out of your brass. It can be fixed, but I'll let a more qualified person talk about that. My advice if you want an Enfield is buy a go/no go gauge to test the head-spacing on the fly.

Now to hear it could go for $500 pretty soon....whoo. Going to be tempted to sell it maybe lol. I have some other gun projects that could use funding that can be just as fun and cheap to use as the Mosin without the headache of upkeep whenever I use surplus. Maybe I should get around to cleaning up the stock and touching up the blue and see what I can get for it.

    A run of the mill MN91/30s are going for around $400 in my area... (early 2019) no bayonet or cleaning kit that they used to come with. I feel your pain on the hex, I didn't buy one at $250 because I thought that it was just too much for a Mosin about 5 years ago. (I so passed on an Enfield at one time for about 400 because I couldn't find ammo and didn't have space to collect something I couldn't shoot. I'm kind of frustrated about that now...)
    I think the spam can of 7.62x54R that I have has doubled in value also... so I genrally use Tulammo at about $11.50/box of 20 or Monarch (from Academy - I think it's made by PPU) for about $0.50/round. non corrosive. the monarch is 180 grain and has slightly more punch... but the 91/30 goes on every range trip that allows FMJ ammo.

    Milsurp collecting will continue, but cost is making it harder to get a nice collection together. As we get farther from WW2 almost all surplus has dried up. I'm guessing the 50's and 60's were the hayday for milsurp! Now we are kind of reaching $$$ that you can buy something new for the same price as a milsurp! Wish I started sooner, as the last few rifles purchased were somewhat higher than I planned on spending. Pawn shops and private sellers still have a deal or two to be had you just need to keep an eye out! The days of the crate rifles are long gone.

    just my thought on some of the folks that blame some of the gun sites for the massive price increases and the difficulty finding some of the milsurps which were once easy to find. If anything I think some of these guys just brought more attention to the quality of these guns. Also it is a simple matter of supply and demand. Some countries just are not importing the same numbers they once did. The swiss K31 is a very good example of this. These are high quality rifles and the price has exploded at least up here in the Great White North. Another example is the Russian version of the SKS. We get them up here for an average price of about 250. That is a good quality rifle for a good price. Compare the SKS to a modern day rifle of similar price and caliber. I know they have also become more popular as a whole due to the fact modern day guns are not made with the same quality and do not last nearly as long as the milsurps. I know many people and so called friends of mine laugh at my love of the milsurps but they all still function good and I can hunt or use for self defense. In closing the Russian SKS is way cheaper up here than in the USA. I have family and friends in the states that are very jealous of the price difference. A product that was made 75 to over 100 years old that still works great. What can you compare that to? I mean anything produced in today's market. And if the gun sites were the cause of the prices of milsurps going up send them a thank you for helping to increase the value of your milsurp collection. Have a great day and God bless!! I would like to thank Hickok, Irag vetran and many others for the videos and helping to educate me in the milsurp market.
